WELCOME BACK! ———— THE AMBER ARMY ARE BACK AT THE ABBEY ———— WELCOME BACK TO THE ABBEY STADIUM UNITED FANS!
277 days since Cambridge United supporters last graced the steps of the Abbey to support the U’s in league action, tonight they shuffle through the turnstiles and mark their return. Back walking down Newmarket Road to see the Cambridge Aces. Oh it’s been too long U’s fans! And by the way, what a time to be back in the stands and on the terraces. Mark Bonner’s side have done a fine job in your absence and sit nicely in third position in the Sky Bet League Two table. The backing of the fans from afar throughout the challenges of this pandemic has been nothing short of phenomenal. Retro shirts sold out in hours, record replica shirt sales, season ticket deadlines smashed and iFollow revenue over £65,000 seeing the club in a slugfest with the big boys at the very top of the division. Incredible. And we’ll need that to continue
www.cambridge-united.co.uk
from both those back with us in body at the Abbey with their vocal support, and in spirit from those fans still watching on iFollow at home. We’re of course not out of the woods just yet. We politely ask supporters entering the stadium tonight to make sure they are fully aware of the guidance that has been published across club channels and within this very programme to ensure everyone’s safety remains the highest priority. And financially the difficulties continue for all Clubs in the lower leagues and below, so every supporter continuing to buy iFollow match passes to watch the action live at home, really is making a meaningful contribution to the cause. Thank you. For supporters returning tonight, enjoy every second of it and we hope that for the very many of those still waiting to be back with us, tonight marks the first step towards a full and buoyant Abbey. ■

MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ————
It’s great to see you back. For all those who are with us at the Abbey tonight, we are delighted you can be here to support the team. It’s been such a long time without supporters in stadiums and it will be a welcome return to have some noise surrounding us again. The lack of supporters across the country hasn’t been to the detriment of the standard. I’m sure many will agree that the standard on show has been good quality this season, throughout the league, and I’m really pleased with the intensity and atmosphere we’ve created on multiple occasions this season. We have to keep being that team. It’s a positive step to see supporters begin to return to stadiums and whilst it isn’t everyone or everywhere, it is a move in the right direction. Who knows how the rest of the season will play out in this regard but we should enjoy this while we have it and hope it remains and increases. I’m certain for those able to attend tonight there will be excitement about that journey to the stadium, the walk up and seeing the floodlights and that evening game buzz. After such a long time I know how much it means to you and how much you’ve missed it. www.cambridge-united.co.uk
BROUGHT TO YOU BY
After a hectic schedule, things have slowed of late but tonight is the beginning of another busy run of games. We need to get back to putting positive results and performances together. I hope that the rest and training we’ve been able to get on board will transfer into our performances in the coming weeks. Last week’s late goal at Cheltenham grabbed us a well-deserved late point. It was a tough game and saw two good teams fighting to the end. This is one of many characteristics I want this team to have and it was a good sign of progress last Tuesday. We welcome Nigel and his team tonight and off the back of a late winner in the FA Cup they will be in confident mood after an upturn on results since his arrival. Also, a warm welcome back to George Maris who left us in the summer, a talented player who put in some excellent performances during his time with us. Finally, we think tonight of all those who can’t be with us for whatever reason. Wherever you are, wherever you’re watching, we will keep working to create a team you’ll enjoy watching. Whenever we can all meet again, we dream of a day with a full Abbey Stadium packed full of noise and excitement. ■

Ian————Mather CEO ————
After the early hope at the start of the season was dashed, this is a day many thought would not come this year. A day when fans are allowed back in. This is another stepping stone to normality. We are missing well over half of the fans that I suspect we would have had at this game. We are missing the away fans and we are following Covid rules that, although now are familiar, still seem intrusive at times. But, for all that, it is a thrill that we can have the Amber Army back in The Abbey. We welcome Mansfield, hot off the heels of their progression to the third round of the FA Cup. In Nigel Clough they have an experienced leader and no doubt they will be tough opposition keen to spoil the homecoming party!
BROUGHT TO YOU BY
I have been fortunate to be able to go to all of the home games, and the odd away one, whilst we have been playing behind closed doors. In what has, undoubtedly, been a brilliant start to our season I have enjoyed watching many “moments” as our majority owner, Paul Barry refers to dramatic parts of a game. One such moment happened in the 96th minute against Cheltenham last Tuesday. A magical goal plucked out of the dying seconds of the game. It was fantastic but imagine what it would have been like with our fans there! At least very many (I suspect most) of you will have been watching on iFollow leading to a large explosion of noise across Cambridgeshire and reaching as far as the USA and Australia as Paul Mullin’s goal smashed into the net. You may have noticed that in the past week we have had quite a bit of media attention. There is genuine interest in understanding how fans can be brought back safely and what the implications are financially. The importance of the safety aspect cannot be underestimated, and, as you will see and hear, we take the issue very seriously. This cuts through many aspects of managing the game to get you all in and out again whilst minimising risk. Just like on the pitch this

is a team game: The key players deserve a mention - Andy Beattie (Covid 19 officer), Ian Darler (stadium preparation and red arrow artist), Gareth Daniels (ticketing), Tom Stewart (Communications) and many more, all of whom have taken responsibility for getting the Abbey ready to welcome you back. There is also another key player in the team – you. We all want to keep having fans into watch games but this relies on you as much as us. Please comply with the rules that have been set out on our website and on social media. Respond to direction from the stewards – we have lots - a ratio of nearly one steward for every 20 fans. This does not mean that you cannot make a noise – please make lots! Support your team and hopefully there will be many moments to enjoy – at this and in games to come. The press has also been interested in the finances of fans returning. When this was announced I heard some commentators say that this was a financial lifeline for clubs. I was grateful to the media to give me (and many other clubs) the opportunity to correct this error in economics. Because most fans at the game are season ticket holders they/ you have already paid for your place and we could not be more grateful www.cambridge-united.co.uk
for you doing so. This does though still mean that the only additional revenue we generate is from the tickets on general sale, which includes some from season ticket holders who have been helpful and told us they can’t come. This ticket revenue does not meet the cost of staging the game by a significant amount. There was never any doubt that we would do anything other than let fans in when allowed. This should though be a wakeup call to the Premier League that their long promised financial rescue deal is long overdue. Looking beyond tonight one way all fans can help with the finances is by coming to watch us in the Papa John’s Trophy game v Gillingham on Tuesday 8th December. I know this is not a popular tournament (to say the least) but it is an opportunity to see your side take on League 1 opposition and it is a game where every ticket we sell will generate extra revenue. Coming back to tonight, before kick-off we will be taking a minute to remember U’s fan Jack Merritt and also Saskia Jones who were tragically killed on London Bridge a year ago. Our thoughts will be with their family and friends as we join in a minute’s applause in their memory. So, it’s great to have you back, prepare for moments, enjoy the game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— MANSFIELD TOWN ———— It’s by no means been an easy watch for Stags fans so far this season, with a winless nine game run to start to the 2020/21 season meaning Mansfield will fight an uphill battle for the months ahead. Ahead of the season and following another highly active transfer window, nobody would have confidently predicted the Stags arriving at the Abbey this evening for the first game of December, occupying 22nd place in the division and just 11 points on the board. Ultimately that poor form cost Graham Coughlan his position at the helm in late October, with the Nottinghamshire side looking to shake things up quickly to get back on track.
Their form and performances have more than picked up since the arrival of Nigel Clough in early November too, with just one defeat in their last six games. So United should tonight still expect and prepare themselves to face the familiar tough Mansfield side they’ve become accustomed to in recent seasons.
THE FORM
The Stags only win of the season was on the road to Forest Green in November, with George Lapslie and Harry Charsley on the scoresheet in Clough’s first league game in charge. Since then it’s been a 1-1 draw at home to Colchester and a narrow 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Harrogate in Sky Bet League Two. CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V MANSFIELD TOWN F.C.
9 However, tonight’s visitors will look to carry forward the momentum of their 122nd minute extra time winner by Nicky Maynard, which secured their FA Cup progression on Sunday against Dagenham & Redbridge.
THE MANAGER – NIGEL CLOUGH
As a player, Clough made over 300 league appearances for Nottingham Forest, becoming the second highest scorer in Forest’s history, before moving to Liverpool in 1993. His playing days also saw him spend time with Manchester City and Burton Albion, as well as receiving international honours for England on 14 occasions. Following the footsteps of his legendary father, Brian, Clough junior too decided to step into the dugout once hanging up the boots. His managerial career started with nonleague Burton Albion in 1998, and after
www.cambridge-united.co.uk
steady progress in each of his first three seasons, the Brewers were crowned champions of the Northern Premier League in his fourth term at the helm. He departed Burton mid-2008/09 season, a year in which the Brewers went on to secure their Football League status, as Clough joined Championship side Derby County. Four years at the helm of the Rams followed before a move to Sheffield United for a two year stint, which saw Clough lead the Blades to the semi-finals of the FA Cup. He re-joined Burton in 2015, successfully guiding them to the Championship for the first time in their history before departing earlier this due to the financial impact of the Covid pandemic. ■

FROM THE SLO ———— DAVE MATTHEW-JONES ———— It is wonderful to see supporters and friends once again at the Abbey Stadium tonight. It has been a long time since we were able to watch a League match together. It is really important everyone follows the safety signs and measures put in place for your safety and also for your health. Everyone has agreed that football needs supporters at matches so let’s make it a success The side has changed so much since we were last together back in March and they have under Mark’s guidance become a team that we can once again be proud to support and follow. Let’s show them our support positively in the coming months and really get behind them. Our support is important and through working together we could achieve so much. In my programme notes for the Barrow match I introduced you to Leo Orobor the club’s chaplain. Today, I am introducing David Burkett the Supporters Mental Health Liaison Officer at Cambridge United. Both Leo and David are there to help supporters as part of the ‘You Are Never Alone’ project CLICK HERE for more details. I am pleased to report that the scheme is being taken on now by the Football Supporters Association. The FSA are looking to bring together all the good work that Supporters groups are involved with around the country. The health and welfare of supporters is a really important issue and it covers not only the current pandemic but also during normal times that will hopefully return for everyone in the New Year. Let’s start by telling you about David Burkett who is 54 years old and a Postman in his day job. He first watched the U’s during the Ron Atkinson era and has played football at various levels. He now coaches both male and female youth football. David uses his past experiences through life, both good and bad, to learn from and be in a position to assist others. He has been introduced to The EFL On Your Side Guide and has taken the 1st4Sport Mental Health Awareness Course. You can contact him www.cambridge-united.co.uk

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Evenin’, all. “A large number of people gathered together in a disorganised or unruly way.” Now that’s the OED definition of a “crowd”. Sounds a bit harsh? Anyway, welcome back, behave yourselves and follow the obligations. Welcome to the Stags this evening for this 24 hour-delayed fixture, nicely coinciding with the ending of lockdown. Mansfield are common opponents for us and we have met them 14 times since returning to normal duties in 2014, including a couple of cup ties. Fortunes are a bit mixed in truth in that time and overall the Stags have the upper hand since we first locked horns with them in the 1972/73 season. Us oldies of course remember how that season ended up and whom we beat to clinch promotion to the third division! “And the whole of Barnwell shook with the deafening roar”.
MANSFIELD ARE COMMON OPPONENTS FOR US AND WE HAVE MET THEM 14 TIMES SINCE RETURNING TO NORMAL DUTIES IN 2014 Wandering down Cut Throat Lane it seems that not an awful lot has transpired on this date in the past. With the promotion season of 1972/3 above in mind we are focusing on 2 December 1972 and a home fixture with the Gulls from Torquay. This ended in a rather turgid 0-0 draw in front of just 3,244 although we had suffered a preposterous 5-1 thrashing at Workington the previous week. Not promotion form, seemingly although remarkably after the Workington thrashing we were still third in the table. This week’s featured programme from the Torquay game shows us as well that at that point the Stags were heading the table after twenty www.cambridge-united.co.uk
games which if nothing else demonstrates a season is a marathon not a sprint. Note the programme price of 5p including the Football league insert (about a fiver in today’s money), manager Bill Leivers was due to collect the October manager of the month award that afternoon (sponsored by Bell’s Scotch Whisky of course) and for Christmas you could buy a Utd rosette for 15p! Enjoy that and of course your return to the Abbey. Finally, on this day in 1988 “Naked Gun”, based on TV’s Police Squad series, premiered in the US. Always worth a laugh. Bye for now.

When re-entering the stand, please once again use the red arrows on the floor to enter the stand in the right direction. LITTER The groundstaff have gone to extra lengths to put in place additional bins right across the stadium. Cambridge United kindly asks supporters to use the bins rather than dispose of litter on the floor. This limits the cleaning process and will allow the groundstaff to quickly move on to preparing the Abbey for Saturday. Cambridge United’s stewards will be there to help supporters, with any queries regarding the social distancing protocols in place for tonight’s fixture. ■

COMMUNITY TRUST ——— Anti-Bullying Week ———
TRUST DELIVER UNITED AGAINST BULLYING ASSEMBLIES TO ALMOST 4,000!
Anti-Bullying Week 2020 took place from Monday 16th - Friday 20th November and the theme this year was United Against Bullying. Cambridge United Community Trust delivered a virtual assembly to 22 schools live from the Abbey Stadium, engaging with 3,833 children. The key message was that by channelling our collective power, we can reduce bullying together. Our education projects all utilise the power of sport and the brand of the football club to teach key PSHE, English, Science and Maths content and these assemblies were no exception. Indeed after the assembly, we received the following message from the Head teacher at Spaldwick Primary: “I have just been on the playground and the children were all chatting about how much they enjoyed the assembly so it has had a great impact.” Likewise, the Inclusion lead at Ashwell Primary School said: “Thank you so much for the assembly - it was fantastic! Loved the footballing analogy and the idea of us all being ‘defenders’. I’ve had really good www.cambridge-united.co.uk
feedback from staff and pupils since.” Community Trust Manager Sam Gomarsall said “I’m lucky enough to see first-hand how passionate our education team (led by the amazing Ash Dyer) are about making schools more inclusive places for everyone. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to pivot to deliver these assemblies online in this difficult year and it’s great we can use the club’s platform to ensure we are United Against Bullying.” This year, more than ever, we’ve witnessed the positive power that society can have when we come together to tackle a common challenge. And bullying is no different. Our message to children was that we’re all a piece in the puzzle, and together, we can choose to be United against Bullying. ■

It may still be early days, but it’s clear they face a task of some magnitude in avoiding the prospect of double relegation. We now steer our attention to the FA Cup, where 9 of our members booked their place in the illustrious red velvet bag. They’ll be hoping to have secured a plum tie against one of the big boys in the Third Round. Tranmere Rovers avoided a cupset, eventually edging out National League North side Brackley Town 1-0 thanks to a Kaiyne Woolery strike. It took extra time for Morecambe to see off a dogged Solihull Moors outfit 4-2, confirming their place in Round Three for the first time in 18 years. Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— IT’S SURPRISING HOW MUCH MEMORY IS BUILT AROUND THINGS UNNOTICED AT THE TIME BARBARA KINGSOLVER
During my time in Nottingham, I often passed a white van with a big sign in the passenger window which simply said Haslam Out! I realised when I had seen it many times that Mansfield fans were not especially keen on the club’s owner, yet another man full of ego and promises that ultimately was never going to be delivered. I saw the same sign for many years long after Mr Haslam had bought a lot of land around Field Mill and left the club in some financial difficulty. Mansfield’s fortunes have fluctuated since then but at least their ambitions have looked up since John Radford took over, pouring a lot of money into a club that needed it. They have had their moments too and have come close to promotion a few times. Things looked good under ‘popular’ duo Steve Evans and Paul Raynor who ditched the Stags, having had what they considered a better offer. Odd behaviour for two such sporting icons. Mansfield’s fans are fanatical, even when there aren’t many of them when times are bad, as they were earlier this season. It is an intimidating place to go and a trip there is always a good test of how resilient our team are. I have a bit of a soft spot for the Stags, since they gave my son his first job as www.cambridge-united.co.uk
a journalist. Indeed, when he was working on their programme, it won a prestigious award. This despite being told not to put so many big words into his articles. Sadly, having just won the award, they made him redundant. Football can be cruel. Tonight is a momentous occasion for those of us lucky enough to be here. It has been enormously frustrating watching United play so well and successfully when iFollow has been our only way of doing so. Real fans want to share those moments of success with the team and with each other. It is what the game is. Like many, I have been here in spirit, and as a cardboard cut out but I relish being back on the North Habbin terrace with all the other cheery optimists. Nigel Clough, a man who once said that he wasn’t interested in the Cambridge job, will make this game hard for us. But I’m going to enjoy it. No matter what. Come on you U’s! ■

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION
Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.
COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)
The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.
Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
