MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ———— As we enter the Easter fixtures we look forward to two exciting games with teams enjoying strong seasons and looking to build on our good form. The challenge of these two fixtures is one we want to enjoy, attack and relish, whilst being very clear that we face sides who are performing to a high level consistently and are in exceptional form. Derek Adams and his side have shown throughout the season what a strong squad they are and through some excellent performances and results, have displayed a real consistency to enable them to be in the upper echelons of the league during the ‘run-in’. Much like ourselves, the expectation externally before the season would not have been where we both currently sit. However, that serves as motivation and we know what a tough test this will be this afternoon. This week has seen some normality return, as we slowly begin to recognise regular routines coming back and we are beginning to see signs of optimism and ‘life’. Our Academy are back training and after months of creative content, online engagement and excellent work from the Academy staff, everyone is thrilled to be back training, coaching and enjoying being together again. The news of Kai Yearn’s call up to an England training camp is superb for Kai and his family, and a reflection of the excellent work that goes on throughout the Academy. Tom (Pell) and all of the staff should be proud of this achievement but also of the work and commitment everyone has displayed over a challenging few months. We have also seen the return of the Development Programme for girls, boys and goalkeepers, as well as half term camps around Cambridge and the surrounding areas. Hundreds of young people engaged in the club, physically active again, socialising and enjoying the activity. You will have seen the Cambridge United Community Trust documentary ‘United for www.cambridge-united.co.uk
BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Cambridge’ during the week highlighting the ongoing fabulous work of the Trust and of the impact CUCT have had throughout the pandemic in the past year. All of this activity and engagement with our Club, further displays the fundamental fact that we are more than just a football team. More than just Saturday 3pm. And for this we should be proud. All that’s missing is a stadium filling up with supporters, anticipating all the drama of a match day. No doubt, our recent games would have created some highlights and memories at the Abbey Stadium and on the road. Instead, we find other ways to enjoy and endure the match day experience. We appreciate the support we have and continue to feel this despite your absence. We set out to re-connect and inspire. I’m pleased we have made such progress on this front, but we haven’t finished. Whilst we look forward to a day in future when you can be here again, we strive to keep improving and giving you a team to be proud of. ■

Ian————Mather CEO ———— Welcome to the few who have been allowed to travel from Morecambe today and to the many more who are viewing this on iFollow from the Lancashire coast. Your team and ours have become known as the party poopers this year. At the start of the season most pundits and bookmakers wrote us off as no hopers for promotion. How wrong they were. As we approach the end of the season both sides have a very credible chance of starting in League 1 on August 7. We are in for a hard fought game. Our teams also share an interesting statistic that was made public this week in compliance with FIFA regulations on the payments made to agents. Out of the 24 clubs in L2 we came in at a thrifty 21st position with Morecambe at 23rd. It goes to show that money is not everything when it comes to finding the right players. Credit for us goes to our Head of Football, Ben Strang who, working alongside Mark Bonner, has done an excellent job on our recruitment. As Covid restrictions start to ease in the UK thoughts in football inevitably start to refocus on the idea of fans coming back into watch games. The clear guidance we have been given is that there is no prospect of this happening before May 17. There is the possibility of play-off semi-finals being moved beyond that date to allow some fans to attend. From 17 April there will be 10 pilot events to test getting crowds into venues. There will be a small number of sports events and an even smaller number in football. Those events will be monitored carefully to see if infection rates rise as a result. After the pilots the next key date is 14 June, seven days before lockdown is planned to end. On the 14th we can expect further guidance as to what, exactly, will be allowed after 21 June. This may well not be an immediate return to life as we knew it pre Covid. The strong desire amongst EFL clubs is that we can have fans back without the restriction of social distancing. To achieve this, it is possible that www.cambridge-united.co.uk

we may have to live with some controls such as the so called “vaccine passports.” There has been a lot of resistance to such measures but if it is the way back to being much closer to normal it is a price worth paying. And finally, my thanks to our South Stand sponsors, Mead Plant and Grab for providing a bit of light hearted fun in giving up their naming rights of the stand for the rest of the season in favour of Paul Mullin. Not only that, they have pledged £100 to be paid to our Community Trust for every goal scored at that end of the Abbey for the remainder of this season but there is £200 if Paul scores the goal. What more incentive could be needed! Enjoy the game! ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— Morecambe F.C ———— Many League Two observers would have predicted another season of relegation threatened woe for Morecambe, but today’s opponents have confounded the doubters in some style. The Shrimps have shaken off their label of perennial strugglers and are well and truly in the hunt for promotion after an excellent campaign to date. Morecambe have spent their recent past looking downwards with trepidation rather than upwards in anticipation – a third from bottom finish last term was a backward step in
terms of league position after ending the 18/19 campaign in 18th place (three spots above the U’s). The brush with the dreaded drop was even closer prior to that – only a superior goal difference preserved their football league status in 2018 with a final day draw at Coventry keeping their heads above water. Manager Derek Adams has transformed the North West outfit this season, with his team recovering from an inauspicious opening month. A 7-0 cup defeat to Newcastle was followed by a 5-0 reverse by the U’s, prompting some to sharpen the knives, but the story since CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V MORECAMBE FC
9 has been one of an upward trajectory with Adams’ team now firmly anchored in the playoff positions.
THE FORM
The home victory against high flying Cheltenham last time out made it back to back wins for the Shrimps, with a second clean sheet on the spin thrown in for good measure. It’s now just one defeat in the last six matches, with other wins coming against Crawley, Carlisle and Harrogate, a solid draw at Forest Green was followed by a 3-1 reverse to Newport. Morecambe have hit the back of the net 52 times this season with only Exeter, Oldham and the U’s outscoring them. Carlos Mendes Gomes is their leading marksman with 12 goals On the road, they’ve taken four points from their last two matches with their overall away record this season reading: Played 19, Won 8, Drawn 4, Lost 7.
THE MANAGER – DEREK ADAMS

the border plying his trade for Clubs such as Ross County and Motherwell. His first taste of management came at Ross County where he took over as player manager in 2007, winning the Scottish second division in his first season before taking them to the Scottish Cup Final two years later. His second spell at Ross after a stint at Hibernian yielded promotion to the top flight and a manager of the year award. Adams made the move to Plymouth in 2015 where he took the Pilgrims to a play-off final (which they lost to AFC Wimbledon) before securing automatic promotion to League One the following year. He joined Morecambe in November 2019 with his competitive record with the Shrimps reading: Played 68, Won 27, Drawn 16, Lost 25 ■

DAVID CROWN ———— EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW ———— DAVID CROWN STAT FILE With U’s: 1985-87 League Appearances: 116 Goals Scored: 45 Joined from: Reading Departed to: Southend United
Former Cambridge United forward David Crown speaks to the match day programme, as he passes over his 35-year league goals in a season club record, surpassed last weekend by Paul Mullin against Carlisle United. Many U’s fans will remember fondly a prolific two and a half year spell at the Abbey from Crown, who shone brightly despite a run of lowly to mid-table finishes from the U’s sides he spearheaded. In fact despite a miserable 22nd place finish for United in his first season in amber and black, it was that campaign in particular he has been able to remember most vividly with the forward finding the back of the net at such regularity, that it has taken over
www.cambridge-united.co.uk
three and a half decades for another individual wearing United threads to go past 24 league goals in a single season. Messrs Dublin, Taylor, Corazzin, Benjamin and Kitson all came and went as a notable list of former U’s frontmen who have dazzled United fans with their goalscoring prowess in their days at the Abbey, since Crown strutted his stuff. And boy would he strut, often in an attempt to wind up opposing centre halves or anyone that would take the bait to gain an advantage! However, none were able to go beyond his tally in a single season, until Paul Mullin’s exploits this season. His final tally in all competitions in 1985-86 stood at 27, the exact number Mullin too currently sits on. And whilst that record too looks highly likely to be surpassed, Crown still feels proud to have written his name into the Club’s history books and encourages his successor to raise the bar as high as it can go in the remaining eight games of the season. ■

DAVE———MATTHEW-JONES FANS ELECTED DIRECTOR ———
After nearly nine months of planning and waiting for them to be installed, having been delayed due to recent Covid restrictions, it was great to see the new Scoreboards installed and operating in time for the match against Forest Green Rovers. It was the first time in nearly thirty years that the Abbey Stadium had had a working scoreboard. Not just one working scoreboard, but this time two - at either end of the ground. One above the disabled stand at the North End and one on the face of the Control Box, adjacent to the South Stand. It was very much a learning exercise for our newly installed scoreboard operators. When the installers left having fitted them, the boards were still in test mode and we didn’t receive the operating instructions until the Friday afternoon before the match. This meant everything had to be re-programmed and re-designed to get them working. It was a magnificent achievement by everyone involved to get them ready in time for kick off. However, during the past few weeks a lot more programming has been completed. We have been trying to get the correct fonts and backgrounds ready for today’s match along with organising adverts and visuals to fit the screens. It may take a little while to get everything working 100 per cent to our satisfaction but with each match, we will see our knowledge grow and improvements and additions will www.cambridge-united.co.uk
be made as we go along. One thing we have been told is that in future the clock is not allowed to show more than forty-five minutes for each half. It is probably a good idea because I was a nervous wreck waiting for the final whistle to be blown. The Scoreboards were organised and paid for by the CUFCLottery. We need to also to thank A R Aspinall & Son for paying for the clocks on them. This has been one of several projects undertaken by the group over the past year during the pandemic. The purchase of the tractor used by the ground team on non-matchdays to prepare the pitch, the provision of the grass seed and the additional hand driers which will be available for use when crowds return. The CUFCLottery is helping to improve the supporters’ experience and there are still many projects that still require to be done. Join the CUFCLottery and help us complete them. MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Afternoon, all. Top of the league going in to the Easter weekend. When was the last time that happened, d’you think? 1999 my trusted sources tell me, prior to playing Cardiff on the Good Friday. We still have some doubters out there on social media - “still be lucky to make the playoffs” was one I clocked this week. Have U’s fans always been so hard to please, I wonder. You could say the previous what 15 seasons going back to 2005, with a couple of exceptions, have been ultimately less than satisfactory but for some those experiences don’t necessarily seem to have raised the appreciation levels of this campaign. Perhaps it’s an emotional safety net? We can all compare notes on 8 May.
WE STILL HAVE SOME DOUBTERS OUT THERE ON SOCIAL MEDIA “STILL BE LUCKY TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS” WAS ONE I CLOCKED THIS WEEK. HAVE U’S FANS ALWAYS BEEN SO HARD TO PLEASE, I WONDER. Anyway let’s journey back to Tuesday 2 April 1991, the day after Easter Monday and a date with some Trotters tended by ex Kop legend, Phil Neal. I remember two things from that night. The wind which pretty much led to their ‘keeper’s flappy punch in the second half and Taylor back-headed it in to go two up. Lee Philpott had given us the lead in the first half. Tony Philliskirk pulled one back late on and International Johnny Vaughan then pulled off a wonder save with minutes to go to preserve the win, which I don’t remember! I do remember Phil Neal choking on his double portion of www.cambridge-united.co.uk
sour grapes afterwards, the usual stuff, who’d pay to watch that every week, blah, blah. Crowd of 7,763 of mainly Cambridge admission-paying folk. Enjoy today’s programme reminiscence, not forgetting that on this day in 1982 Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands (a clue there for today’s quiz?!), which a lot of us at the time thought was some feat assuming they were somewhere near the Outer Hebrides. Since 1912 - United in Endeavour! Bye for now. ■

Around the Division ———— LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP ———— OWEN MIZON TAKES HIS LATEST LOOK ACROSS LEAGUE TWO Cambridge United embark on the Easter period as leaders of the pack in Sky Bet League Two after late drama secured a 1-2 win over Carlisle United at Brunton Park. Lewis Alessandra looked to have secured a share of the spoils when he cancelled out Paul Mullin’s record-breaking 25th league goal of the campaign, but the travellers once again possessed their never-say-die attitude and confirmed a third consecutive win when Adam May slotted home on the brink of added time to hand Mark Bonner’s men a twopoint advantage at the summit. The Cumbrians’ promotion bid looks curtailed now after just one win in 13 and seven points from the top 7. Nonetheless, they did have the opportunity to return to winning ways and rise when they hosted Crawley on Tuesday evening. Morecambe continue to defy the odds as a Liam McAlinden strike helped overcome promotion rivals Cheltenham Town 1-0 at the Mazuma Stadium. Averaging just under two points a game in their last 10, the Shrimps are a solitary point from the automatic promotion spots, setting up a decisive afternoon here at the Abbey this afternoon. Sliding to 2nd, the Robins will be eager to break out of their win/lose cycle and extend the two-point cushion from 4th. A sweet Stephen Quinn volley denied Tranmere Rovers a precious three points as they were held 1-1 by Mansfield Town. Winger Kaiyne Woolery struck the opener on the brink of half-time, but the setback meant the Merseyside outfit, who have lost one in ten, are now allocated in 3rd via goal difference. It’s four draws in a row for the Stags, who are 19th. A rampant Bolton Wanderers grabbed their 10th win in 11 with a 0-1 success over stuttering Forest Green Rovers. Eoin Doyle’s first half strike, his 16th of the season, was enough to separate the sides and move the Trotters to 4th, a place and point ahead of Mark Cooper’s side who have won one in five.
Matt Jay’s sublime goalscoring season continued as his decider handed Exeter City a 1-0 win over Salford City at St James Park, banishing a run of three consecutive defeats in the process. The crucial victory ensures the Grecians remain on the cusp of the play-offs, looming a point behind in 8th. Whereas for the Ammies, who replaced Richie Wellens with former Bradford City boss Gary Bowyer earlier in the week, they slip to 10th and are winless in five. Leyton Orient collected a third straight win and progress to 9th with a 2-1 victory against Keith Curle’s Oldham Athletic. Conor Wilkinson and Dan Kemp capitalised on defensive mishaps to send the O’s two goals clear, with an Alfie McCalmont attempt on the hour mark proving a consolation for the Latics, who are 17th. Port Vale also made it three on the bounce with an assuring 1-3 triumph over Crawley Town. Tom Conlon’s early strike was cancelled out by Ashley Nadesan for the hosts, but an inspired second half from the Valiants concluded in the win thanks to quickfire goals from Nathan Smith and David Worrall. Sitting in 18th and nine points adrift, the job looks all but done for Darrell Clarke. For John Yems, his side are 11th and need to make up six points if they want to make a late surge into the play-offs. Their midweek result would have proved make or break. Colchester United were plunged deeper into relegation trouble as Bradford City returned to winning ways with a 1-2 win at the JobServe Community Stadium. Kian Scales drew first blood early on for the Bantams, before a Frank Nouble downward header levelled matters moments before the break. The travellers regained their lead on the 58thminute through Andy Cook, before holding firm to wrap up a first victory in six as they enter 12th position. One win in 22 makes woeful reading for the U’s, CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V MORECAMBE FC
25 who are 21st and just four points from danger. Stevenage extended their unbeaten run to 10 matches and climbed to a creditable 13th with a late 2-1 conquest over relegationbattling Barrow. After substitute Calvin Andrew cancelled out Elliott List in the 78th minute, the Bluebirds looked destined to earn a vital draw. That was until Boro striker Luke Norris converted 10 minutes later to decide the tie. Remarkably, Alex Revell’s backline have only conceded 33 goals all season, the second least in the division to Salford with 30. With their relegation rivals picking up points, Barrow’s advantage in 22nd is reduced to three points but they do have invaluable games in hand. An Ashley Nathaniel-George strike midway through the second half secured a vital 0-1 win for Southend United over Harrogate Town. Bulging the onion bag just 23 times in their
38 games, the Shrimpers had a stern defence to thank as they made it four unbeaten and earned a third clean sheet in that time. Languishing in 23rd, and essentially four points from safety due to a hefty negative goal difference, the great escape is still plausible. Three defeats in a row for the Sulphurites sees them in 15th. The task is even greater for Grimsby Town, who failed to make up more ground at the bottom as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Walsall at Blundell Park. James Hanson gave the hosts an early lead, but Caolan Lavery pegged them back for the Saddlers on the eve of the break, who themselves are 20th and now 12 without victory. Perhaps a consolation for the Mariners is that they are six unbeaten, but in five of those the points have been shared. ■

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— IF YOU WANT TO GO FAST, GO ALONE. IF YOU WANT TO GO FAR, GO TOGETHER The first time I went to a game in Morecambe, in 2007, I confess that I was much more interested in the town’s fortunate connection with Eric Morecambe and with its superbly restored Art Deco seafront hotel. It seemed to be full of derelict buildings, vague memories of a prosperous past and a very impressive and seriously underused railway station. Since then, Morecambe has undergone a bit of a revival, the club has moved to a new ground and has become established in the Football League. Several years under long serving former centre half Jim Bentley made them notoriously hard to beat, if not much fun to watch. We have come a long way too, since Charles Ademeno and Courtney Pitt terrorised defences in the Conference. Sadly, we weren’t able to be there to enjoy our 5 nil win at Morecambe earlier this season, a result which looks even more impressive, given Morecambe’s excellent results since then. They are challenging for promotion like us and, like us, must be looking forward to the season’s climax. It’s a shame that Kevin Ellison has moved on, although he clearly enjoyed scoring against Morecambe a few weeks ago. He is a real character and had some hilarious banter with Habbin North over the years. Two years ago the impressively bald Ellison told us that he was desperate for a haircut. “And plastic surgery”, some unkind Habbinite shouted back. Football needs characters like him but there aren’t so many about. We can anticipate a much tougher game at home. No doubt the Shrimps will have worked out that record goalscorer Paul www.cambridge-united.co.uk
Mullin and midfield wizard Wes Hoolahan are a threat to any defence. Kyle Knoyle, Jack Iredale and Hiram Boateng are in wonderful form. Who isn’t?! United produced some scintillating football in the first half at Carlisle and we could have been 3 up by the interval. We have a side which never gives up, as scoring right at the end of each half clearly shows. We are top of the league on merit. It is no fluke. No opponents will be taken for granted but, at the top of our game, we are more than a match for any team, however much money they have spent. We haven’t seen Harrison on the rampage for a while. I suspect this Friday will be his day.■

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.

Everyone loses when you step on the track
Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION
Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.
COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)
The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.
Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
