MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ————

It’s great to see you back and enjoying the Saturday ritual of football at the Abbey. Our aim over the coming months is to give you some enjoyable afternoon’s here full of energy and attacking intent. Wednesday night was a tough match that could perhaps have gone either way. Mansfield’s goalkeeper made some good saves and on another day we may have taken something from the game. That said, we’ve increased expectations and our standards have risen to a point where we are disappointed with parts of our performance. We felt as if we surrendered possession a little too easily and made some poor decisions in attack, but that said there were moments of good quality too. Mansfield have had a real upturn of results since Nigel Clough has taken over and I think we will see over the course of the season that their current league position isn’t a true reflection of their squad. They played with a real www.cambridge-united.co.uk

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

competitive edge and swarmed us, defending resolutely when they had too. Our aim is to stay humble enough to understand that if we want to keep developing as a team, we have to find the endeavour and fight it takes to get on top of games, and the quality and composure with the ball to execute our play well enough. We are in the midst of another busy run now which gives us an opportunity to rebuild some momentum after a stop start fortnight. It’s our responsibility to react and work our way back to scoring points. Oldham have shown real form away from home collecting some big wins so we will need to defend with strength and pass the ball quickly and with quality. I’m looking forward to the challenging weeks ahead and am delighted that the club’s hard work over the past few months has seen you all able to join us again. All the best. ■

Ian————Mather CEO ———— Welcome to all today including our visitors from Oldham. Unfortunately, we cannot have away supporters in attendance – but we will get there at some point next year and, hopefully, Oldham will move from Tier 3 soon and will be able to have fans back at Boundary Park. It has been a busy and exciting week as we saw the return of fans on Wednesday and, on Thursday, finally, a financial deal was concluded between the Premier League and the EFL. I have done several media interviews commenting on both issues leading to one wit on Facebook suggesting I am on the telly more than Boris! I have been consistent in the message about fans and finance. We are delighted to have fans back in the Abbey. We are as sure as we can be that we have created a safe environment, and a key element of that safety is trusting our fans to follow the rules. As one of the clubs in the country leading the way on the return of fans we have a responsibility to football to get this right. There are many people who are sceptical about the decision to open our doors. If there is any hint that football crowds create “spreading events” we can expect the doors to be closed again. The feedback from the Chair of our Safety Advisory Group (SAG – who give us our licence to open the ground to fans) was that, from a Covid safety point of view, our game on Wednesday “went extremely well”. Thanks to all of you who were here for your help. One example of this was the way most people responded to our request not to drop litter. This then has to be picked up by someone which is an avoidable Covid risk. Please use the bins. I have also made the point in the media about the return of fans costing the club money. I am conscious that this may sound a bit unwelcoming. The message though was not aimed at fans – it was part of a wider drum beat to be heard by the Premier League and www.cambridge-united.co.uk

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

Government. We needed to get the message across that the limited return of fans was a “financial lifeline”. I heard this said by a number of commentators and journalists. It was a line that needed to be corrected. At last we now have the long talked about financial deal with the Premier League. This is very welcome and they and the EFL, particularly Chairman Rick Parry, should be given the credit for getting this done. Overall our view is that this is a reasonable settlement and, hopefully, will allow all clubs to get through this season. It is possible that some may not but, because of the deal, the number will be far fewer than otherwise. Back to the football. On Wednesday we lost on the pitch but getting fans back was a win for football. Hopefully today we can have a win both on and off the pitch! Enjoy the game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— OLDHAM ATHLETIC ———— The season so far has been a strange one for supporters of the Latics. There have been pockets of optimism and reasons to look ahead with promise, only for reality to set in with an ensuing bump back down to earth. Tipped for the drop by some bookmakers, an early run of five league games without a win seemed to back up those predictions. A first league success of the season away at Bolton and a home draw with Carlisle hinted at better things to come before that “bump” of two more losses in the next three. Recently though, the trajectory has been in the right direction and the likes of Cheltenham, Exeter and Barrow have all been the victims of Harry Kewell’s improving

side. They’ve emulated that form away from league action, too, beating Bradford in the Papa John’s Trophy before disposing of the Bantams again in the FA Cup last weekend - a performance the manager described as the best of the season so far. They may be sat in 17th place in the division, but there are signs that Kewell may just be beginning to get a tune out of his team.

THE FORM

Tuesday’s narrow defeat at home to Tranmere was only Oldham’s second reverse in the last eight games. They’ve won seven of their last ten in all competitions, with Danny Rowe proving to be a consistent threat - he scored CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V OLDHAM ATHLETIC AFC

9 in all three of their recent victories against Exeter, Barrow and Braford. Without doubt, Oldham prefer life on the road to home comforts. Four of their five league successes this season have been away from Boundary Park – in fact, only Cheltenham have won more away games in League Two so far this term.

THE MANAGER – HARRY KEWELL

Kewell, who took over following the departure of Dino Maamria in the summer had a glittering playing career. The Australian, who was capped 58 times for his country, started life in English football with Leeds United where he helped them to a Champions League Semi-Final, before moving on to Liverpool where he made 139

www.cambridge-united.co.uk

appearances and tasted European glory in the famous victory against AC Milan in 2005. Moves to Galatasary, Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart followed, before he retired from playing in 2014. Kewell started his managerial career at Crawley where he spent just over a year before Notts County came calling. He signed a three year deal at Meadow Lane, but his tenure was short lived as he departed after just ten weeks. He joined Oldham on August 1st 2020 and has won 11, drawn 2 and lost 9 of his competitive games in charge. ■

THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK ———— PAUL DIGBY ———— It’s been clear from the outset of his arrival at the Abbey that Paul “The Digger” Digby was made of different stuff! But even by the tough standards he’s already put in place as the warrior in United’s central midfield, to return from a facial fracture within a month is quite something. As is his superhero appearance in the protective mask he now wears when taking to the field for United, an accessory Digby says he’s found no issues in affecting his performance. He said: “It was a strange injury, but I’m back now and I feel great even with that mask on! “The mask helps. The whole right side of my face is numb and there are still a few fractures there. So with the mask on it feels like it’s all holding it all in place. It feel like it gives you that added bit of protection really. “Like I say it still feels a bit strange on one side of my face, hopefully when that feeling comes back and it’s healed properly I’ll be able to take the mask off. But for now I’m actually quite happy to be playing with it on. “I’ve noticed how often you get whacked on your face and around your nose, and it’s been a really good bit of protection for me.” Digby admits that the midweek defeat to Mansfield was one that stung, as United fell for the first time at the Abbey this season, however the midfielder also says the team haven’t dwelled on it too long to allow themselves to be in the right mindset to respond today. “We’ve looked at ourselves since Wednesday night and asked was that performance good enough to the standards we set ourselves. It’s been about finding a way to respond this week. “We were all disappointed with the result but we haven’t had long to feel sorry for ourselves, we have all known there’s another game round the corner and we have to ready for that. You www.cambridge-united.co.uk

haven’t got time to be down about it. “We have to be better and get a more positive result on Saturday against Oldham.” And on the return of fans and his first opportunity to play League matches in front of the Amber Army, Digby admits it’s been a refreshing lift for the team. “The support was fantastic. When you’re in the game, you don’t feel any added pressure with whoever is in the ground, but they can lift you in the right moments. To have an atmosphere when you’re warming up, makes a real difference. It’s brilliant to have them back.” ■

13

FROM THE SLO ———— DAVE MATTHEW-JONES ———— I would like to start off by thanking everyone involved in enabling the match against Mansfield to take place in front of supporters. The stewards, medics and ground staff did a wonderful job. The match also involved both the full-time ground staff and volunteers working together in the run up to the evening ensuring that everything inside the ground was ready in time for the gates opening. We cannot forget all the backroom team who go unseen most of the time on match day having to deal with all the reams of instructions, policies and changes to just reach a point where the match could go ahead. The club have over the years built a really good working relationship with the local Safety Advisory Group and by doing so it has allowed the SAG to trust the club would deal with the event professionally. When it was announced that matches would be allowed with 2000 people in attendance, it meant finding out who was being included in that figure. The number didn’t in the end mean 2000 supporters as it also included other groups, so in a very short timescale the ticket staff had to find a solution and allow as many supporters as possible to attend. Thank you to everyone for showing support, patience and understanding. The ticket office and shop are like everywhere in the club run hugely on volunteers working with Gareth and Lorraine who were also dealing with a Black Friday sale. However, most of all thank you to the supporters who attended. It was great to have you back at the Abbey. The result wasn’t what we all wanted but the evening was important for both football and society in taking the first steps back on the road to normality. It was great to see so many people again. Football is nothing without supporters. They are the life blood, heart and soul of any club. The support through the purchasing of season tickets was www.cambridge-united.co.uk

a huge leap of faith for everyone. I am really pleased you have been able to come back again. You must also be congratulated with the way you dealt with the changes on the evening so quickly. The club’s history group 100yearsofcoconuts have been busy during the past few weeks and were involved with the production of the ITV Anglia sports feature celebrating the clubs 50 years since being elected a Football League club. If you have not yet watched it go to the group’s website blog page. Club legends Roly Horrey and Brian Grant took part in the show and it was wonderful to see them again and listen to their stories and watch some early U’s footage. You will also be able to read about Paul Barry’s early days as a supporter following Cambridge United CLICK HERE to see the link. The group work hard to capture stories and ensure the club’s history is recorded, remembered and that artefacts are kept safe for future generations to read and enjoy. It was good to see that the Premier League and EFL have reached agreement concerning a rescue package. I understand that League Two clubs will receive a minimum payment of £250,000. I hope this will be the first step to realising that the monies in football should be more evenly spread across the the leagues and the realisation that football clubs can never return to the previous levels of spending. There’s a responsibility to all supporters not to risk what is a community asset and precious to many who follow clubs with passion and cost both emotionally & financially With Christmas approaching please don’t forget you are never alone. If you need to speak to someone please CLICK HERE. Up the U’s, take care and stay safe . ■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Hullo, again. Most readers will not know the ad slogan “I told ‘em Oldham” but it’s something I have always treasured as my old man always used to pipe up with it, particularly around games involving the Latics. It was a brand of car battery by the way. Many special games involving these guys over the years but most of all the groundbreaking FA Cup ties in January 1974 involving ‘free’ admission on a Sunday and two replays culminating in defeat for the U’s by 2-1 at the neutral City Ground in Nottingham on a dank Monday afternoon.

Remember we had already been trounced at Layer Road 5-0 in the first round of the League Cup just four days after our FL baptism against Lincoln. A week later in December we were due to meet them again but this time in the FA Cup second round which saw a pretty resounding 3-0 reverse. Less than two months later we were back at Layer Road for a D4 fixture which saw their U’s run out 2-1 winners. You may say the pointers for this home fixture on 5 December were not good but who said “football, bloody hell!”?* George Harris and Roly Horrey ensured we ran out 2-1 winners in front of a decent derby crowd of 5,183. COMMUNITY TRUST Jasmine continues her Frame ———

Football Journey

———

Our Frame Football session sees participants, the majority of whom have cerebral palsy, get the chance to take part in lots of fun, football-based activities. Jasmine has spastic diplegia, a form of cerebral palsy affecting her ability to move her legs. Our Every Player Counts Frame Football sessions are designed to improve children like Jasmine’s balance, co-ordination, agility and motor skills. The sessions have been going for almost 3 years now and have grown to create a group of 6: our own ‘Frame Football Amber Army!’ In her mum Sally’s words: “Jasmine has started frame football this season. She has absolutely loved it, as has Summer (her sister). It’s an amazing little team and an amazing coach. For anyone out there who is using a frame or walking aids, this is ideal.

19 Lots of socialising with others which is so very important. We’re so pleased we found it.” And since coming to the session, Jasmine has taken her first unaided steps. “It’s a place we were unsure we’d ever get to and hard to put into words,” Sally said. 4 years ago Sally, fundraised more than £60,000 in less than a year to pay for the selective dorsal rhizotomy operation to reduce the stiffness in Jasmine’s legs. But Jasmine didn’t stop there! Her confidence grew further and she became more willing to allow herself to wobble and even fall. Sally says: “She’s had great fun with her friend at the sessions who is starting to walk independently, they were falling and stepping together and laughing so much. Being around other children with a disability at Cambridge United’s Every Player Counts sessions, has made such a huge difference to her in more ways I could have thought.” As lockdown struck, Jasmine continued to take part in our lockdown Zoom sessions with Phil, our coach & continued to engage with the virtual challenges as well as meeting up with her friends! ■

RAINBOW LACES

Cambridge United are proud to come together in our support of LGBT inclusivity to raise awareness of Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign which includes our nominated matchday activity vs Oldham today. Rainbow Laces Day 2020 will be Wednesday 9 December. Though COVID-19 presents us with challenges, we are strongest when we come together. Following sport and taking part can give us community, energy and a sense of belonging. That’s why Rainbow Laces is as important as ever, and why we all need to play our part to make sport everyone’s game. This coming week, we are also highlighting the work we do within this area to continue to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment for all: sending out Rainbow Laces to the young people we work with, and engaging them in conversations around LGBT inclusivity. The EFL’s support for Rainbow Laces forms part of its wider LGBT work and anti-discrimination campaign, ‘Not Today or Any Day’ which continues to raise awareness of the issue and the zero-tolerance approach to discrimination and prejudiced behaviour.

Around the Division ———— LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP ———— OWEN MIZON TAKES HIS LATEST LOOK ACROSS LEAGUE TWO It’s been an enticing start to the 2020/21 season to say the least. Unpredictable results have been dished up by the week, culminating in an extremely competitive division. As we enter what’s bound to be a gruelling Christmas schedule, players will no doubt be galvanised by the return of their faithful home support. As ever, let’s digest the trials and tribulations of Sky Bet League Two. Jamille Matt came back to haunt his former club as his Forest Green Rovers side salvaged a 1-1 draw over early pacesetters Newport County. County retain their perch at the summit of the table, one point ahead of 2nd with a game in hand. Mark Cooper’s men are in 4th and just the solitary point outside of the automatic promotion spots. Cheltenham Town extended their unbeaten league run to four matches with an excellent come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Bradford City at Valley Parade. Experienced frontman Clayton Donaldson had originally put the Bantams ahead on 23, however they were pegged back on the stroke of half-time when Alfie May’s looped attempt nestled into the far corner. This rejuvenated the Robins, whose class was evident in the second period as sheer dominance paid off when substitute Chris Clements stabbed home the decider on 76 to ensure Michael Duff’s stay 2nd. It’s crunch time on the other hand for Stuart McCall’s men, who are 22nd and just a point from safety after three consecutive defeats. Exeter City compiled misery on Grimsby Town and moved their tally to 13 goals in just three games as they comprehensively overcome the Mariners 4-1 at Blundell Park. Ryan Bowman kick-started the scoring after 20 minutes, before Luke Hendrie equalised with a well-taken effort. The Grecians further underlined their promotion credentials as a quickfire Randell Williams brace before

the break put them in the driving seat. The three points were rubber-stamped on 68 when a clever Matt Jay back-heel made it four as Matt Taylor’s side cruised to 3rd. Ian Holloway’s team are 18th but boast two important games in hand. Carlisle United rewarded the returning 2000 home fans with a convincing 2-1 victory over Salford City on Wednesday night. Chris Beech’s side were roared into a two goal advantage courtesy of fine strikes from Lewis Alessandra and Rhys Bennett. Di’Shon Bernard converted a late consolation for the Ammies, but it was too little too late as the Cumbrians held firm to rise to 5th. It’s not all doom and gloom where Richie Wellens is concerned, City are in 9th and just two points from the coveted top seven with a game in their favour. Mansfield Town recorded their second win of the season with a resolute 0-1 away win at the Abbey Stadium against Cambridge United in front of a returning crowd. A neat finish from Jamie Reid, as well as goalkeeping heroics from Marek Stech, proved to be the difference as the U’s suffered their first home defeat of the campaign. Nonetheless, 6th in the rankings with a game in hand still makes for impressive reading. Now with just one loss in six games, Nigel Clough’s side have breathing space in 19th. Tranmere Rovers are on the cusp of breaking into the play-off positions after a 0-1 success over Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park. James Vaughan planted home his 11th of the season in all competitions on the 27th minute as Rovers ground out the three points to secure their fifth win in a row in League Two. With just one win at home all campaign, today’s opponents will be eager to build on their away form with a victory this afternoon CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V OLDHAM ATHLETIC AFC

25 which would increase their five-point gap from the relegation spots. Morecambe secured a first win in five as they overcome a dogged Barrow side 1-0 at the Globe Arena. Tricky attacker Carlos Mendes Gomes gave the Shrimps a 12th minute lead, before Bluebirds defender Sam Hird was sent off three minutes later for handball. Despite the setback, David Dunn’s remained valiant and made the hosts battle all the way to take the points. In spite of that, they are a lowly 21st and a point from safety. Whereas Derek Adams’ outfit are now two points from the top seven. Colchester United shared the spoils with Crawley Town following a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the JobServe Community Stadium. A speculative 30-yard strike from winger Callum Harriott opened the scoring for the

hosts, before Jordan Tunnicliffe slammed home an instant reply on the 20th minute. The U’s are now 12th, whereas John Yems’ side are 13th and without a victory in five. Scunthorpe United continued their upwards trajectory of form with a convincing 2-5 victory over Harrogate Town on Tuesday evening. The Sulphurites fall to 15th, whereas the Iron are 20th. Stevenage were cruelly denied consecutive victories and a break from the bottom two as a strike at the death from Walsall forced a 1-1 draw. A penalty from Aramide Oteh looked to be the match decider, that was until Josh Gordon climbed off the bench to rescue a point for the Saddlers via a penalty of his own. Walsall, who have drawn 60% of their games, are situated in 16th whereas Alex Revell’s men remain 23rd.■

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— THE BIRD THAT WOULD SOAR ABOVE THE LEVEL PLAIN OF TRADITION AND PREJUDICE MUST HAVE STRONG WINGS KATE CHOPIN

Providing the Lockdown rules haven’t changed again, 2,000 of us will be here cheering for a second home game within days. We will enjoy it whatever but desperately hope that a noisy, partisan set of long frustrated fans will make a real difference. It has been an odd, if virtual, season so far, with Villa smashing seven past Liverpool and Spurs winning 6-1 away at Old Trafford. Jose probably hopes that real crowds are never allowed back since unpredictable results are Tottenham’s best hope of silverware. Certainly, Marine will be hoping for some kind of uncertainty in their glamour tie against a money bags team eight divisions higher in the much vaunted FA Cup Third Round. Sadly our “reserve” side got soundly trounced at Portsmouth which is what happens when games pan out as they are supposed too. Fortunately football is sometimes not like that. Today’s opponents Oldham Athletic will be hoping for more Tales of the Unexpected when they take on Bournemouth in the next round. Form suggests that they should struggle against us but Harry Kewell has made them into a much more effective outfit after a fairly torrid start and we will need to be on our mettle. Apologies if I am beginning to sound a bit too much like our own Mark Johnson. In particular, we must keep a close eye on www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Danny Rowe, while they will need to keep a close eye on Paul Mullin, Harrison Dunk, Joe Ironside and Luke Hannant. One day soon Andy Dallas is going to score a few too. I am certain of that. Thank goodness we don’t have the distraction of VAR, which is currently sucking the spontaneity of games which are now more about money and celebrity. It was intended for use as a last resort when an obvious error had been committed. We can all see what’s happening, everyone except the game’s ruling bodies who don’t see how many fans are already losing interest in the only clubs that seem to matter. I hope that we never have to have it here, unless, of course, Trevor Kettle is in charge. Finally, I was very sad to hear that the Abbey Church, birthplace of our club and one of the few still existing reminders of Barnwell Priory, is in very real danger of falling down. Tradition is so important to any football club and to its community. We can’t just allow an impending disaster to happen. Does anyone happen to know a very wealthy benefactor?! Up the U’s! ■

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION

Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.

COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)

The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.

Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
