MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ———— Tonight’s test against Port Vale is one we are really looking forward to. John Askey has built a strong squad that’s been together a while now, who will no doubt be challenging at the top end of the table come the end of this season. That stability and consistency has allowed their team to develop a style and strong relationships throughout the side. Whilst we are very early on in the cycle of this team, we have some relationships developing well and are constantly evolving as a team. We are working hard to develop our style and identity, and part of this is to create different ways to win games, using a variety of systems and players. Take the past two victories, both excellent wins and both achieved in a different style. We want to work to be able to stamp our authority on games but are humble and pragmatic enough to understand that we will need to change in order to compete sometimes, and that without complete commitment to each individual game, we won’t give ourselves a chance if we don’t find those intensity levels game after game. Our reaction since the defeat at Exeter has been outstanding, and Saturday’s performance www.cambridge-united.co.uk
was dominant and ruthless. We are of course delighted with our goal return but equally with the clean sheets we have kept. Port Vale currently have the best defensive record in the league so we will have to work hard and find real quality to threaten their goal whilst fighting to defend our own record. In a busy run of games it’s easy to think ahead and try to plan for multiple games at once, but the most important game is the one in front our face. Tonight, we need to be at a top level to compete with another promotion contender as Newport were. In the coming weeks we play a number of teams in this category and we are motivated by that challenge, excited to give our best and try to come out on top. Thank you for your magnificent support with purchasing the limited edition kit we wore last week. Thank you for the number of you purchasing game passes on iFollow, and thank you for engaging with us as you always do at such a strange time for football supporters. We wish you were here, and will fight to keep our good start going. We will continue working towards our ambition of building a team that United supporters all over the city are desperate to watch once allowed and proud to call their team. ■

Ian Mather ———— From the CEO ———— We welcome Port Vale to another empty Abbey stadium but if we did have a crowd I would ask you to applaud their Chairman, Carol Shanahan, for her selfless approach to the way last season ended. I was on the League 2 call in June when we had to decide how the season was to end. When we stopped playing in March, Port Vale were hot contenders for promotion but the proposal to end the season on Points Per Game would mean that they would miss out. Carol voted for the common good and supported the proposal. It is the sort of principled position that deserves recognition and if we had more people like Carol running the game perhaps we might not be in the very difficult situation that football finds itself in at the moment. I wish Port Vale all the best for the season and hopefully they will be promoted at the end of it, even without three points at the Abbey! I am sure we have all enjoyed the success we have had on the pitch this season. Credit is rightly due to Mark Bonner for his careful planning and leadership. He is the first person
to point out that this is a team game and there are many team members off the pitch who are making a huge contribution to our great start. One of those, has to be Ben Strang. He really has shown the value he brings to the Club with all of our signings. Away from the Abbey the week just gone has seen a tumultuous turn of events which, just maybe, will lead to the reorganisation of football governance and finance in this country that seems to me to be long overdue. Last week started with the news of discussions involving Rick Parry, Chairman of EFL, and Manchester United and Liverpool. The so called “Project Big Picture”. At the heart of this was an attempt by the richest teams in the Premier League to take control of the running of the PL and other aspects of the game. The proposal has been widely criticised but there were elements in it that were good. It would have produced more funding for EFL clubs. The exact level has been contested – but however you do the maths the deal would have added significantly to the income of all CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V PORT VALE

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— PORT VALE ———— Tonight’s clash pits the League’s best attack against the best defence, with the Valiants proving in their first six games just how tough a nut they are to crack. John Askey’s side have conceded just two goals so far this campaign, one better than United on three, with former U Leon Legge at the heart of Vale’s defensive resolve. No team has scored more than one goal in a game against the Vale, but goals overall have been at a premium at both ends of the pitch for this evening’s visitors, who have kept all games tight. They currently sit in eighth position, which is exactly where they ended up at the curtailed conclusion of the 2019/20 season. However,
Vale have largely kept together the majority of the playing personnel from the last term, and will be hoping their experience will help to at a minimum push them inside the top seven come May.
THE FORM
Like the U’s, the Valiants head into this evening’s fixture on the back of a win on Saturday, inflicting a first defeat of the season for Salford City 1-0 at Vale Park with a late Cristian Montano strike. Vale began their first four games unbeaten, picking up wins against Crawley Town and Exeter City followed by a draw with Harrogate Town in September, before Morecambe beat the CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. NO TEAM HAS SCORED MORE THAN ONE GOAL IN A GAME AGAINST THE VALE, BUT GOALS OVERALL HAVE BEEN AT A PREMIUM AT BOTH ENDS OF THE PITCH FOR THIS EVENING’S VISITORS Valiants 1-0 at the beginning of this month. Carlisle United are the only team to win at Vale Park in 20/21 so far.
THE MANAGER
JOHN ASKEY Askey was actually on the books as a Vale player at youth level, following in the footsteps of his father, Colin Askey, who progressed through the club's system to become a key player during one of the most memorable periods at Vale Park.
www.cambridge-united.co.uk
Unable to make a first team appearance, he left to join Macclesfield Town in 1984. He then appeared over 500 times for the Silkmen during a 19-year spell at Moss Rose, scoring over a century of goals. Following his retirement, he transitioned into management and took the reins at Macclesfield for a period in the 2003/04 season, followed by a second spell in the hot seat at Moss Rose. Askey eventually guided the Silkmen to a remarkable promotion into the Football League in 2018. Following a short spell at League One Shrewsbury Town, the 54-year-old joined the Valiants in February 2019 and successfully steered the club clear of relegation. Last season saw continued progress up the League Two table. ■

Interview ———— JOE IRONSIDE ———— “THE TEAM COMES FIRST” SAYS BIG JOE It’s delivering in his role for the team first, and keeping check on his personal tally of goals second, in the priorities list for Joe Ironside. The U’s centre forward produced another of his typically robust, hard-working and destructive displays in black and amber up at Glanford Park on Saturday, and was rewarded for his endeavour with a birthday brace to increase his tally for the season to three. The 27-year old says he will always look to do what is needed for the collective effort as a team before his own individual targets come into play. He said: “The team comes first always, but as a striker it’s obviously always nice to get on the scoresheet, and goals are what you get judged on. So it was nice to get the two goals. Overall it was a really enjoyable game to be a part of (at Scunthorpe), and I felt we controlled the game throughout. “I like to give everything I’ve got and make it hard for people, and that’s what the team needs as well and brings our other attacking players into the game. I was pleased to do that at Scunthorpe, and hopefully I can carry on doing it. “It’s also important as a striker, that if you find you’re not scoring, you still find yourself in the right positions to give yourself and the team the best chance of doing so. Luckily they did go in for me at Scunthorpe, so that was happy days!” Ironside has forged a formidable partnership with fellow striker Paul Mullin since the pair arrived permanently at the Abbey in the summer, and Joe explains how they feed off each other’s success on the pitch. “Me and Mulls have got such a great relationship. We work as a two all game. Mulls has obviously been banging them in left, right and centre and I’m genuinely delighted for him, because we’re working so hard as a two together, for each other. “Whatever we can do to help the team in our www.cambridge-united.co.uk
partnership, then that has to be our priority. “We’re good pals away from the pitch, and that goes for Knibbsy and all us strikers too, we’re all close because we all know that we have to work together when we’re on that pitch together. You can only be as good as the striker you’re playing in a front two alongside, so you have to get those relationships going.” Finally, the striker reveals the aspects of his performances, aside from just scoring goals, that he uses to build up his confidence. “Goals obviously provide you with a massive confidence boost, and that’s exactly how I feel. But I get that same feeling from knowing I’ve done my job for the team as well. “If that’s being unselfish, laying other people in, that’s how we work because we’re all a team and we’ve got a fantastic unit so we need to keep pushing in the right direction.” ■

FROM THE SLO ———— DAVE MATTHEW-JONES ————
I start off by congratulating Ian Darler who was recently awarded the BEM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. He recently completed his 40th year working at Cambridge United and throughout his time at the club he has allowed volunteers to assist him around the Abbey Stadium This has provided the opportunity for those retired to come together. It helps build friendship, camaraderie within the group and a purpose to continue using their skills and time with purpose. Ian has also provided opportunities to those doing work experience from local schools and colleges to work at the club and give them a start in life. On a professional level he has carried out his work with skill and dedication often having to go beyond the expected. He has acted as mentor and trainer for many young groundsmen who are preparing pitches around www.cambridge-united.co.uk
the county and also nationally in addition to offering support and advice when asked. Lately, he has assisted with increasing awareness of mental care using his own experiences to provide a platform for others to speak to him personally or privately to their friends and family. The flags put up in the NRE in recent weeks provide real colour and fill an otherwise empty area. The finding of the Passion and Pride and the newly purchased CUSP - United in Endeavour flags provide real club identity on match days. Well done to everyone involved in donating, loaning, buying and installing them. If you still have any flags that could be used please contact Gareth Daniels. He has done a wonderful job of organising this project. Gareth and the volunteers who help are often unseen but have been carrying on throughout the summer. Everyone agrees that football needs supporters. It is fans who provides the passion, pride & atmosphere at grounds during matches. You can show your support by having a, Face in the Crowd, cut out which is displayed in the Mead Stand. It takes only a few minutes to complete an order. CLICK HERE to order one Let’s try to fill as many seats as possible! Project Big Picture was rejected last week, however it has provided the opportunity to discuss how football is financed and governed in the long term. When these discussions are concluded it has to ensure monies are more evenly and fairly spread across all clubs, that the voice of every club matters and not just a few big ones. Most importantly football is about those who watch it in rain or sun, in good and bad times at home or away. It has to ensure that football supporters, who matter most are at the heart of any decision made Those running football should remember that they are the custodian’s / caretakers of the game. They are morally responsible for all clubs and not just their own.■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Evening, Happy Harry here. Port Vale then. A curious bunch of opponents in a way in that we have only met 20 times since 1970. And in the future what may the statisticians make of us only meeting once in the 2019/20 season, eh,lest we forget. Personally I have always been a little dubious of sides wearing white and black but that might be a Cambridge City thing going back to the 1960s. A mate did tell me that Vale’s third colour is amber so not all bad. 20 October is actually worth mining down Cut Throat Lane for. In terms of our league history we first saw action in 1971, our second season in Division 4. If you come away from the north west wilds of Borough Park and Workington then a 1-0 victory would have always seemed the sweeter. We have been in home action eight times on this day, the most recent being against the Hatters back in 2012, not a happy day. With local derbies in mind we’re concentrating on 1972 and another set of U’s who were disposed of comfortably 3-0. A Bobby Noble own goal set us on our way and John Collins and Bobby Ross finished things off in front of 4,465. Given the trauma inflicted upon us by Col U in our early days of Division 4 life. then a welcome about turn. The matchday programme is here today for your indulgence. Finally, fancy a bit of trainspotting some time? Well be grateful for Danny Boyle. He’s 64 on the 20th. Raise a flag! Bye for now.

IAN DARLER ———— Interview ———— INTERVIEW WITH LONG-SERVING U’S GROUNDSMAN Cambridge United Stadium Manager Ian Darler speaks exclusively to the Match Programme following the news that he will receive a British Empire Medal for his 40+ year service to the Football Club and his charity work. Darler was recently named on the Queen’s Birthday Honours list and he explains how he genuinely felt he was the butt of a prank when being told the news. The long-standing U’s Groundsman looks back on his time so far at the Club, and discusses how it led to him first getting involved with his charity work, Cambridge Charity Fundraisers, which has seen him raise thousands of pounds for a host of local charities including Tom’s Trust, Arthur Rank Hospice and East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices.

Darler has also played a leading role in Cambridge United’s work to become the first mentally healthy Football Club in the country, and he chats about how well the environment at the Abbey has adapted to losing the stigma around talking about mental health. Finally, he pays credit to the hard-working team of ground staff around him and reveals he has no plans to hang up the wellies just yet! ■

LIVING SPORT AWARDS ———— COMMUNITY TRUST ———— VOTE FOR IAN DARLER & THE COMMUNITY TRUST IN LIVING SPORT AWARDS Cambridge United are delighted to announce that Stadium Manager Ian Darler and the Community Trust have been nominated for the Living Sport Virtual Sports Awards 2020. Click on the link below to vote for them. Ian has been nominated for “Services to Sport” and the Community Trust have been nominated for “the Matthew Warn Power of Sport” award. As many will know, Ian Darler was awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list 2020. The honour was given for his services to Cambridge United Football Club and his charity work, with the Cambridge Charity Fundraisers. Ian, the U’s groundsman for 42 years, told Mark Taylor of the Cambridge Independent about the British Empire Medal: “I’m blown away. I feel really honoured, especially even more so in the current circumstances.” “Having so many friends who work within the NHS and understand what they’re going through at the present time, I think they are the sort of people you feel should be getting these awards.
“I think it has made it even more valuable to me to receive something like this during the current situation - I’m staggered.” CLICK HERE to read the full article. The Community Trust have been recognised for the fantastic work supporting the community throughout 2020 and the coronavirus pandemic. From making over 1,200 calls to seniors; cooking and delivering almost 2000 meals; engaging young people in free physical activity over the summer holidays and so much more, the Trust truly were “Here For U’s.” The Community Trust Manager, Sam Gomarsall, said of the nomination: “I’m delighted that the team’s hard work over lockdown has been recognised in this nomination. However, it’s not solely the team of Trust staff which this nomination recognises, because we were overwhelmed by requests from the Cambridge United fanbase. This nomination highlights the way football clubs can be at the heart of their communities.” Cambridge United Women’s Manager, Ben Yeomans, goes up against CUSP Member David Burkett too in the “Coach of the Year” nomination.

Around the Division ———— LEAGUE TWO ROUND-UP ———— OWEN MIZON TAKES HIS LATEST LOOK ACROSS LEAGUE TWO Cambridge United’s rampant start continued as Mark Bonner’s men won back their seat at the perch of the Sky Bet League Two table after a swashbuckling 5-0 away victory over Scunthorpe United. It’s been a gruelling spell for Scunthorpe, who have conceded 11 goals in three and sit in a lowly 21st with just the solitary win. Newport County returned to winning ways with a deserved 1-0 win over 10-man Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, firing them up to 2nd in the process. A first Football League goal for Saikou Janneh mid-way through the first half was enough to give the Exiles maximum points. A difficult afternoon for Mike Jackson’s men, their below-par performance consigning them to 16th. Cheltenham Town surged back to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 win at a depleted Southend United, who remain winless. Liam Sercombe raced the Robins ahead after 10 minutes from the penalty spot, they continued to threaten and eventually doubled their lead through George Lloyd after the break. It’s contrasting emotions for Mark Molesley’s side, who are itching to get off the mark and exit the foot of the table sooner rather than later. Forest Green Rovers’ creditable start to the campaign continued with a 1-0 success over Stevenage. A first-half thunderbolt from Jake Young, his first senior goal, maintained their unbeaten start to the season as they moved up to 4th with 12 points to their name. Stevenage, on the other hand, have fired blanks in their last three league games and are situated in 17th. Despite being pegged back from a two-goal lead, Carlisle United stayed composed and wrapped up a thrilling 3-2 win over Colchester United at Brunton Park. Strikes from Lewis Alessandra and the in-form Jon Mellish appeared to set Carlisle on their way. A Luke Norris brace got the travellers back in the game, stinging the hosts. That was until the 80th
minute, when defender Aaron Hayden guided his header home to earn a third win in a row for the Cumbrians to send them 5th. Back to the drawing board for Colchester, who are 14th. Crawley Town extended their unbeaten home league run to 12 games with a 4-0 demolition job of a shaky Morecambe. In the space of 25 second-half minutes, George Francomb, Tyler Frost and a quickfire Max Watters debut brace wrapped up a convincing win for John Yems’ side, who rise to 9th. Despite shipping 13 goals already this campaign, the Shrimps are 6th thanks to four previous wins. A fourth goal of the campaign for striker Jack Muldoon was enough to earn his Harrogate Town a 1-0 victory over Barrow in their first game back at the EnviroVent stadium. After the game, Simon Weaver stated: “We were not at our best, but it was just a case of grinding out a win,” as the Sulphurites enter the play-off picture. Barrow, whose last Football League victory came in April 1972, slip to 22nd. This evening’s opponents Port Vale arrive at the Abbey on the back of an impressive 1-0 success over Paul Scholes’ Salford City. Christian Montano struck late on to take all three points, after home goalkeeper Scott Brown had saved Ian Henderson’s penalty. It proved an end to the Ammies unbeaten start, they are now situated in 11th. The Valiants, on the other hand, remain stubborn in defence and have conceded just two goals in their six league games, they’re in a steady 8th. Walsall extended the country’s longest undefeated league run to 11 games with a drab 0-0 draw at home to Exeter City. Similar to Crewe Alexandra’s exploits of last season, Darrell Clarke’s side have brought last season’s late form into this one and accompany 10th after a share of the spoils. Described as a “slugfest, with two good teams going at it” by Grecians boss Matt Taylor, four games CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V PORT VALE
25 unbeaten and situated in 12th means they’re enjoying steady progress. Bradford City prolonged Mansfield Town’s miserable winless start with a dominant 3-1 away win. A Marek Stech own goal, a Connor wood strike and a stab home from Clayton Donaldson ensured that Andy Cook’s late strike was nothing but a consolation. The Bantams are now 13th with a game in hand. A disastrous campaign for Graham Coughlan’s men thus far, they’re 23rd despite spending big in the summer. Ian Holloway was left thrilled after his Grimsby Town recorded a dramatic 3-2 victory at Leyton Orient. Conor Wilkinson had given the O’s a fast start early on, but goals from Luke Waterfall and George Williams changed the complexity of the game. A solo effort from Jordan Maguire-
Drew on 75 brought the hosts back on level terms. With a draw beckoning, late drama ensued as Montel Gibson clinched the points for the Mariners via a spot-kick. It was enough to send them 15th, whereas the hosts fall to 18th. Ian Evatt blasted his Bolton Wanderers side as they fell to another disappointing 2-1 defeat at fellow strugglers Oldham Athletic. Preseason favourites for many, the Trotters fell behind before the half hour mark when Ben Garrity slid in the opener. Nathan Delfouneso levelled matters minutes later with a left footed attempt from close range. Just when a draw looked guaranteed, substitute Zak Dearnley converted a stoppage-time winner to earn a first league win for Harry Kewell since taking charge at Boundary Park. His Latics rise to 19th, a place above their opponents. ■

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— “Power is not a means. It is an end” George Orwell It’s hard to get excited about a football match when you’re not allowed in the ground and when it’s not quite clear whether the powers that be are prepared to allow smaller, and, by inference, less important, clubs to die. Having been encouraged to begin the season and stage matches with strictly limited numbers of spectators, the policy of playing behind closed doors is bound to push many clubs closer to ruin. Ian Mather has already said that the lower leagues must reject Manchester City’s proposal to admit B teams to the league. This would destroy any pretence of genuine competition, which is the lifeblood of the game. Reaching the top should be the legitimate aspiration of every football club in the land. Why are the big six so afraid of this prospect?
THE RESCUE PLAN FOR THE LOWER LEAGUES, ON WHICH THE PREMIER LEAGUE RELIES FOR FRESH TALENT, SHOULD BE PROVIDED WITHOUT CONDITION OR PENALTY Manchester United and Liverpool, in my opinion, have made a quite blatant grab for power by taking advantage of an increasingly dire economic situation. The rescue plan for the lower leagues, on which the Premier League relies for fresh talent, should be provided without condition or penalty. I applaud the other Premier League clubs for voting against a plan which would have made the gulf between the haves and the have nots even wider. Given the immense wealth of the top clubs, saving the rest of football would be an act of will, based on common sense and hardly likely to make much www.cambridge-united.co.uk
difference to them. It would not be an act of charity or doing us a favour. It is fundamental to the future of the game and long overdue. We, Port Vale, and all the other small clubs are in desperate straits but we have a profound duty to stand up for the many rather than the few and resist all attempts to abuse power and advantage. I hope that we have another great game and another assured performance from United. I wish Port Vale and all of us good luck for now and for the future. It is hard to accept that no deal at all would be better than a deal which effectively destroys the long term future of the game but there it is. We will never defeat this dreadful pandemic by allowing greed and the consolidation of purely selfish power. Now, more than ever, we must be United in Endeavour. ■ (My thanks to Paul Stephen for his assistance with this article)

Everyone loses when you step on the track
Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION
Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.
COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)
The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.
Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
