Fan noticeboard WELCOME Happy New Year to all our supporters. It has been some time since our last game, following recent postponements, so I am sure that players, staff and fans alike are eager to get back to it this afternoon. It’s an uncertain time with COVID at the moment, so I wish good health to everyone and hope that we can continue to enjoy football here at the Abbey Stadium. Today should be a cracking occasion with the travelling Portsmouth fans no doubt going to bring plenty of numbers and noise, so bring your best and let’s make it a triumphant return to the Abbey. Finally, please bring your spare change to today’s game and donate to Ian Darler’s collection for mental health charity, Shout 85258. Ian has raised over £8,500 of his £10,000 target as part of his Million Steps Challenge and we would love to get him over the line this afternoon. Small changes can help mental health so please support the cause if you can. United in Endeavour.

I should start by wishing you all a very Happy New Year. 2021 was a special and memorable year for our football club, one which is written in to the history books given the achievements of everybody. But it didn’t pass without its obvious challenges for many as life continued to look and feel very different. Such changes showed their hands in so many ways throughout the year and the past few weeks have given us a stark reminder on the impact that COVID can still have on our lives and our workplace. The latest variant certainly seems to have spreader wider and faster than at any time we have known here and it put paid to two exciting games in the festive calendar. Boxing Day football is many peoples favourite as it gets us out of the house enjoying all the emotions that supporting a football team brings. I know many took the chance to watch their local non-league club or take in the Cambridge City vs Histon derby game to make
sure their football fix was satisfied. Our own schedule was very different and seeing teams in our league playing but not being involved ourselves did seem unusual. Today we face a team in fine form who are rich in support and tradition. They are led by Danny and Nicky Cowley who are top coaches and leaders in the division. We had a fantastic result earlier in the season at Fratton Park - a day I know was a favourite of many supporters. We performed really well on the day and rode our luck at times, but showed all the resilience you need in-order to earn points in League One. We are under no illusions how big the challenge is today and what impact the enforced break will have on any teams and players affected from the past three weeks. Our training schedule has ticked along and enabled us to keep working with the healthy players. Those who have been ill and in isolation have dropped back in at the appropriate times as they have to follow the protocols of returning to games and full training. The attitude of the players has been first class, as often is the case, and I am pleased with how they are coping with all the changes that in truth, make the training ground the opposite environment to what we want it to be. But, we crack on. 2022 promises to provide us with a whole host of new challenges on and off the pitch. But for the team, we wish them good health, togetherness and continued desire to improve and embrace those challenges. Our team starts with the three core values of Resilience, Respect and Responsibility. Everything we do will be underpinned by these 3 R’s. It is with those in mind that we will keep trying to perform at a level that makes us feel connected to you and that keep providing you with the emotion, entertainment and enjoyment that the past 12 months have given us. Thank you for your continued support. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and wish you all the very best for the year ahead. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Ian Mather CEO
Welcome to all of the Pompey fans who have made the trip up from the South Coast. Our away trip earlier in the season was enjoyed by many U’s fans who soaked up the great atmosphere in Fratton Park. Our Abbey may be smaller but it is just as welcoming, though we don’t have a man with a big bell – thankfully! This is our first game in 2022. Looking back, Covid aside, 2021 was a great year for the U’s. We achieved automatic promotion, against all of the odds - literally given all bookmakers thought we would be lucky not to get relegated. What stood out last season, apart from the record tally of goals from Paul Mullin, was the team spirit. There was a really determined edge to the side. One that would battle even if we went behind in a game (which we did a few times). That spirit has continued through to this season. We come to this game having had some really tough matches against very strong teams. The results have not gone our way but the drive and effort is there for all to see. The word is resilience. That has been called for, in large doses, for all of us to get through another 12 months of stop start life inflicted by Covid. At the end of last season, all games were played Behind Closed Doors (BCD). We
started again in August with fans back and what a difference that made. We may have thought at one point Covid was done with but then we had Delta which gave way to Omicron and we are facing another wave of infection. But, a year on, we have vaccines. It is up to all of us to have a jab (or three). If we all do that the chance of serious illness is much less. It is the key to living with Covid – which we will have to do. We have had to postpone our last two games due to the pandemic. We were not alone with 60% of League 1 games off for the same reason on Boxing day. Who knows whether the Government will impose any restrictions like those imposed in Scotland and Wales where, once again, football is BCD. Let us all work hard on minimising the risk of that, and of other restrictions. We have a great day out coming on 8 January at St James’ Park in Newcastle. Hopefully we will all be allowed to go and join in a crowd of up to 52,000. Finally, in this programme we pay tribute and say farewell to a number of our fans who have passed away in the last year. For those of us in the Abbey, make an extra loud noise for them. Enjoy the game. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Today’s visitors PORTSMOUTH The fascinating story of Portsmouth Football Club continues this season, with the 2007/08 FA Cup winners making the 300-mile-roundtrip to the Abbey Stadium this afternoon looking to continue their mid-season resurgence, and in turn forcing their way into the League One play-offs. A run of six wins in nine League One games prior to Pompey’s clash with fellow promotion chasers Plymouth Argyle last week saw Portsmouth rise from 17th – where the South Coast side sat following a 4-0 defeat to Ipswich Town mid-way through October – to 9th and just three points shy of the play-offs. Marcus Harness and Connor Ogilvie’s goals sealed all three points against Morecambe in the second week of December before COVID-19 halted Pompey’s lead-up to Christmas, with games against AFC Wimbledon and Exeter City all being

postponed before the Blues’ Boxing Day clash against Oxford United also fell to the same feat. A midweek clash against Plymouth Argyle saw Danny Cowley’s side return to action for the first time in almost three weeks. Memories of Cambridge United’s 2-1 victory over this afternoon’s visitors may (or may not in Portsmouth fans’ opinions) be fresh in the minds ahead of today’s clash, as Joe Ironside and Liam O’Neil’s goals either side of the half-time whistle secured the U’s first ever win over Portsmouth at a sunny Fratton Park in September. However, with Danny Cowley’s side then enduring an eight-game run without a win, the U’s will certainly be in for a tougher test at the Abbey Stadium this afternoon. Despite defeat in in the last meeting, history will certainly be on Portsmouth’s side, with
Mark Bonner’s side ending an incredible 43year winless run over Portsmouth in September, with Cambridge United’s one and only other victory coming back in 1978, as Steve Fallon’s volley proved to be enough for the three points in front of 5,869 spectators at The Abbey. Since then, Pompey have won 14 of 17 encounters against The U’s. Before September’s Fratton Park clash, the most recent encounter between the two sides came in 2017, with Luke Berry’s late strike only proving to be a consolation as Portsmouth ran out 2-1 winners in front of 18,165 at Fratton Park en route to their eventual promotion as champions out of League Two. ■

In Remembrance U’s we lost in 2021
Mary Meehan
Mum unfortunately lost her battle against Cancer on 30th September. She would always take me to home games and always keep me updated on results when I had to work. She was a loving mother to my Dad Oliver and my three sisters Susan, Aisling and Clare. She is missed by us all.
Jon Rogers
Jon was a family man and an avid Cambridge United supporter, often taking his children to matches. His ill health prevented him taking the grandchildren in later years. He spent 50+ years, many as a season ticket holder, standing in the Habbin watching the highs and lows. Jon went to many away and cup matches over the years. He will be sadly missed for his wit by those who stood around him.
Gail Pearson
Gail attended her first match in 1991, witnessing Cambridge win the league and gain successive promotions. From then on she declared herself a Cambridge fan, the only one in her Hertfordshire school, proudly wearing her Cambridge scarf which was confiscated regularly. Gail had a Season Ticket in the Habbin with her family. After travelling and university, she moved to Cambridge, renewing her season ticket. Weekends were spent following the U’s around the country with Matt, clocking up an impressive number of grounds. Gail died in January of pneumonia. We miss her.

Ian Kirk
Richard North
Along with being a loyal Cambridge United Supporter, Richard was a husband, father and a true gentleman with a fantastic sense of humour. Living in Over and watching the games when he could, he also become a keen member of the Cambridge United Supporters page and will always be remembered by us all as a fellow ‘U’ that was taken far too early.
Sarah Thacker
In memory of my wife Sarah who passed in October. Missing you greatly. Our memories will live on in my heart. Loved by all.
Brian Smith
Brian Smith, a lifelong U’s fan and long term season ticket holder, sadly died suddenly on 11th October 2021. He will be greatly missed by all his friends and family. His passion for Cambridge United will live on through his daughter and grandson.
Ian was taken suddenly during the COVID pandemic and lived in Newmarket as a passionate U’s fan and Season Ticket Holder. He was respected and loved by everyone who knew him and is very sadly missed.
Andrew Shoesmith
Andrew passed away on 10th December 2021 after fighting a year’s long epic battle with cancer. Andrew was known as Shoey to family and close friends. He followed Cambridge United since he was a young lad and continued to follow them all over the world while serving in the armed forces. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Barry Moore
Barry grew up just the other side of Coldham Common and supported the U’s from a fairly early age, and so by the time of his demise, he had followed them for around 70 years, for about the last 50 of which, he had been a season ticket holder. The Club meant so much to him that he became a shareholder and followed everything with great interest. Barry was a warm, friendly outgoing character and on match days, he always left home early and normally, before entering the ground, he would pay a visit to the CFU caravan and chat to all and home and visiting fans alike. He is sorely missed by both his loving family and all his many friends.

Reg Adcock
Reg passed away on 25th November 2021. Former D Block season ticket holder who had followed United since the 1950s. Dad, grandad & great grandad to three generations of U’s fans. Forever in our hearts and thoughts.
Derek Edward James Twinn
We lost Dad on the 12th September this year at the good old age of 94. He was a regular at the Abbey from about 1960 and then a season ticket holder from 1978, until advancing years stopped him attending after 2018. The majority of those years were spent in the Habbin, only changing to the main stand for the last year. He introduced me to CUFC when I was around 8 years old and of course, I still attend. Attached is a photo of him in typical pose after a U’s victory.
Priscila Gullick
Reg Stokes
Even though he is gone, my dad will always be my hero and if I can turn out to be a little bit like him I know he would be proud. We all lost a great one but heaven gained a special angel that day.
Jay Goddard
This month marked 4 years since we lost our beloved Jay. He would have been celebrating our promotion and attending games in league one this season alongside family and friends. So once again we will raise a glass to you, and hope the mighty U’s pick up 3 points for you up high! We love you dearly Jay, One Step Beyond.
Priscila was born in Digos City, Philippines on January 26th, 1970. She met her husband Paul on a dating website. Six months after getting to know each other, they went over to meet in-person and got engaged. Three months later, they married on May 2nd, 2012. In 2015, they made a new start in Ireland but in October 2021, after being in Hospital for 6 weeks, Priscila sadly died of Breast Cancer. Priscila had an infectious smile that drew people towards her. May she rest in peace.

From the SLO DAVE MATTHEW-JONES Today, we welcome the supporters, officials and players of Portsmouth to the Abbey Stadium. I have a lot of respect for supporters like Ashley Brown and Simon Colebrook. I have spoken to them many times over the years. Ashley has been and continues to be a really important figure in his roles with both Supporters Direct and the Football Supporters Association (FSA). He is one of those go-to people who is the fount of all knowledge and has so much experience. Simon and myself have been working together on a project for the past 18 months, so we have shared many zoom calls and hours during that time. What the Pompey Supporters Trust and their board achieved at Portsmouth was nothing less than remarkable. Just before Christmas we received the Family Excellence Award scores following their assessors first visit to the Abbey Stadium earlier in the season. The scores are based on a visit by a mystery shopper. Although, the marks were promising and were an improvement on previous ones, we still have a way to go on the journey. There is always more to do and more to learn. Once one bar is reached then its target needs to be raised. The EFL’s Family Excellence Scheme was launched to reward clubs in their efforts to deliver an outstanding Matchday family experience. The scheme revolves around a ‘mystery fan’ visiting each season, with assessors and family groups reporting back on their experiences across a range of touchpoints. These being First Impressions, Social Media, Travel, Stadium Vicinity, Retail, Refreshments, Inside the Stadium, People, Friendliness and Feeling Valued. The assessments and feedback produced help to focus on the areas required to ensure improvements can be made. The visits, and the positive changes made as a result, go towards determining whether Clubs are awarded Family Excellence status each season. There will be a second visit made by an assessor at some point from February onwards. We need
to be ready for when they come back. During November, the CUFC Lottery purchased a new off-road wheelchair for the club. The existing one was broken and needed replacing. Since its arrival it has already been used twice to help the medical team to assist supporters at matches. To join the lottery, see www.cufclottery.co.uk. In other news, 100yearsofcoconuts have recently ordered a re-print of the Andrew Bennett’s Celery & Coconuts series of books. The collection can be posted to you or collected on matchdays. The books are an excellent read and documentation of the club’s history. They can be ordered by visiting the Cambridge Fans United Online Store. Following the recent Government regulations concerning covid please be patient and ensure you follow the advice, requirements and rules as you did previously. We know you will and thank you for doing so. Finally, if you are travelling to Newcastle this weekend have a safe journey and hopefully, we can look forward to a fantastic away day for everyone connected to the Club. You can contact me via dave.matthewjones@cambridge-united.co.uk or by sending me a tweet at SLO@ CambridgeUTD. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Memories Down CUT THROAT LANE Afternoon, all. Hope you enjoyed your football-free break. At least for you cricket fans out there - and there are many I know the England team will return victorious from Australia shortly. Welcome to Pompey this afternoon. Did you see that Fratton Park ranked at no 20 in FourFourTwo’s 100 Best Football stadiums in the UK survey? We’re at 81. We are going back to our first fixture of 1983 for our stroll back down Cut Throat Lane way today. A home game in division two against Blackburn Rovers who were sitting ninth in the table at the time whilst we were struggling in the bottom four. In truth our second division days were starting to run out. We managed miraculously to stay up that season and actually finished a very creditable 12th, one spot below the Rovers. Looking at some of the crowds in the first
half of that 1982/3 season it is clear to see that the Cambridge public were becoming disenchanted with second division life too. The 1983/4 season though was a disaster from the start and we finished rock bottom, 24 points from safety. Finally for today, a chance to celebrate the birthday on this day in 1892 of John Ronald Ruel (JRR) Tolkien. Tolkien was English but actually born in Orange Free State in South Africa. Works such as The Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion propelled his status and he became the Father of High Fantasy. Tolkien died in Hampshire in 1973 having been made a CBE just the previous year. In 2002, a poll conducted by the BBC voted him the “92nd greatest Briton”. Praise indeed. Enjoy the game. ■

Given the unwelcome intervention of Covid, we’ve missed out temporarily on the fixtures against Wycombe and Doncaster. We have reached the stage of the season where return fixtures give us a good indication of the progress we have made during the season. Most of us think that our recent points return doesn’t really reflect how we have finally arrived in this division and are holding our own
with all the big clubs which were going to terrorise us. Portsmouth are one such and our win at Fratton Park set down a marker for our season and showed that we are not to be underestimated. Our fans were loud and passionate as they have been all season and helped the team to put in a defiant performance which shocked the hosts and their fans who had been insisting that this was our cup final. Not so. They wont underestimate us this time and no doubt their vast following, restrictions permitting, will be expecting better from Pompey. They are a grand old side with fine traditions, but, as I have said before, history doesn’t win matches. Inspiration and honest endeavour does that. No doubt we will see this in abundance at Newcastle too, if we are allowed to go there. The Bookies will fancy the home side but that doesn’t affect much either. We are nobody’s fall guys these days. These big games and big days are what we savour. Bring them on! ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Around the Division LEAGUE ONE ROUND-UP As we close the curtains on a strenuously challenging 2021, let’s dissect the year in general for our Sky Bet League One members, analyse their performances on the pitch and grade their endeavours. ROTHERHAM UNITED - The most potent attack and the sternest defence - with an unbeaten run surpassing 20 games to add further gloss - the tier three experts are showing no signs of a relegation hangover. AWIGAN ATHLETIC - Full credit to Leam Richardson. The 42-year-old inspired the Tics to safety last campaign - a four-match winning run in April proved instrumental as they survived by the solitary point. Continuing with the accumulated momentum, they are very much title-chasers. A SUNDERLAND - The Black Cats have shown promising signs of progression from their play-off heartbreak. An applaudable Carabao Cup run has added unity and spirit to this side. The feel-good factor looks to be returning. B WYCOMBE WANDERERS - The Chairboys earned a plethora of plaudits after going excruciatingly close to recording the great escape courtesy of five wins in their final eight. Stubborn defensively, they’re making a great case in their quest to return. B+ PLYMOUTH ARGYLE - A barnstorming start has petered out of late. They should improve on last campaign’s 18th position nonetheless– but can Steven Schumacher fill the void of Ryan Lowe and fight for the play-offs? B+ OXFORD UNITED - Quietly going about their business, Karl Robinson will be ecstatic with his men’s perseverance. Consistently sound, a third successive year situated in the top six is the aim for the steady U’s. B SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY - Shrugging off financial struggles and steadying the ship under Darren Moore, the Owls are tricky to beat - with their form at Hillsborough simply
22
CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V PORTSMOUTH
instrumental. There’s a real correlation of positivity. B PORTSMOUTH - Ever since shipping four in consecutive October clashes, Pompey look galvanised and ready to compete for the coveted play-offs under the settled Cowley’s. January will prove make or break. C MK DONS - A streaky end to 2020/21 handed the Buckinghamshire outfit underdog aspirations. Possessing some of the EFL’s finest youth talent, they’re living up to that tag. C+ ACCRINGTON STANLEY – Responded from a tricky March schedule well and are surpassing pre-season expectations. It’s been another unswerving year for John Coleman and his men. BIPSWICH TOWN – Despite a squad revamp which included several coups, the Tractor Boys couldn’t capitalise on this by stamping their authority as one of the title favourites. A new era awaits under Kieran McKenna, can they find the required performance levels? CCHARLTON ATHLETIC - Permanently under the reins of Johnnie Jackson, the Addicks come out of 2021 in similar fashion to how they started it – rampantly. Attendance figures have doubled since shaking off a calamitous winless September. C BURTON ALBION – Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink returned in the New Year instantly rejuvenating the Brewers as they comfortably avoided relegation. They continue to defy odds and improve. B+ CHELTENHAM TOWN – The League Two title winners are well constructed under Michael Duff’s tutelage, who’s assembled a no-nonsense backline despite losing captain Ben Tozer. A BOLTON WANDERERS – Blazed to promotion in devastating manner, but perhaps may feel disappointed after shying away from their sizzling early-season form. B+
CAMBRIDGE UNITED - Despite being unfancied beforehand, the U’s soared to promotion and ensured a first appearance in this level since 2002. Holding their own, it’s certainly been an enthralling year. AAFC WIMBLEDON – A sweltering April saw the Dons steer away from relegation. With the goals being shared around their promising XI, they’re a trickier side to face nowadays. C+ FLEETWOOD TOWN – A streaky season thus far has seen the Cod Army drift in and out the drop zone. Their tight-knit defence, who regularly pop up with goals and assists, will determine how they fare. D+ LINCOLN CITY - Wembley wretchedness was a bitter pill that the Imps have well and truly swallowed. A talented core is unfortunately underperforming. D SHREWSBURY TOWN – A below-par conclusion to last season wasn’t ideal – nor has their recent form which sees them
flirting with the relegation pack. Under Steve Cotterill, however, they’ll be ready to fight. CMORECAMBE – Play-off success ensured League One football for the first time in their history. The transfer window was a hectic one, but Cole Stockton’s slotted into this division seamlessly as they enter a dogfight. AGILLINGHAM – From top six outsiders to one of the relegation favourites, an ominous winless run to the year means Steve Evans has a substantial task on his hands. DDONCASTER ROVERS - A dire run of two wins in 16 at the back end of last season was a sign of things to come. Winless on the road - picking up just the solitary point – form at the Keepmoat will be invaluable. E CREWE ALEXANDRA - Matching the heady heights of 11th was always going to be a challenging feat. Losing key players in the summer was a hefty blow. The Railwaymen have time, they can’t let it run out. E ■ Owen Mizon

CFUBenCorner Phillips We would like to start by saying that we hope all our members and fellow fans had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We hope you all had a wonderful time with your families. It was a real pleasure to recently see a founding member of CFU, Dave Matthew-Jones, elected to the Cambridge United Hall of fame. Dave has been the driving force behind the Club’s Supporters Trust since its creation in the late 90s and continues to work on several key projects as the current Fans Elected Director and SLO for the Club. Everything he does has the fans best interests at heart. It was also great to see another Committee member and lifelong volunteer being inducted in Colin Proctor. Colin’s support for the club over the years has been remarkable and people like him and Dave as volunteers are always needed at clubs like ours. They are an inspiration to younger committee members like myself. Football has come a long way since the 90s but Supporters Trusts still play a pivotal role at football clubs, offering fanbases a say on the game we all love at club level. As well as this, they can have a say nationally through the Football Supporters Association. The recent Fan Led Review will have a significant impact on fans by allowing them to have their say, and will give football supporters more opportunities for representation and to question things in the game. Hopefully it will also protect struggling clubs such as Bury and Macclesfield. CFU has recognised that it needs to be more diverse and inclusive as a committee. For a long time, it has been made up of middle-aged people and we would like to breath new life into the committee and expand by bringing in younger and more dynamic members to help represent the whole of the fan base. This opportunity would suit someone who would love to develop new skills and help us to support fellow fans and ensure there is a future for the football club for generations to come. We would particularly love to hear from U’s
fans in the age ranges of 18-35 and anyone who has experience of working with websites and social media. If you would like to get involved, please make yourself known at the CFU Caravan next to the Club Shop on Matchdays. You can always also chat with us. Andy Stephens - Current Chair of the Trust can be found in the Habbin. I, as Vice Chair, can be found pitchside armed with a camera and there is also Dave Matthew-Jones, current Fans Elected Director & Supporters Liaison Officer. He can be called on 07703 274044 or emailed via dave.matthewjones@cambridgeunited.co.uk. Lastly with everything going on in the world at present we should take nothing for granted. Your health, your mental wellbeing, your family, your friends, your possessions, your job and even your football team. Nothing in life is guaranteed, so make the most of these things now. Let’s continue to attend games together safely while we can and continue to get behind Mark Bonner and the team and give them the support they deserve. Stay safe. A BIG SEASON IN STORE VISIT THE NEW CAMBRIDGE UNITED STORE AT GRAND ARCADE
CAMBRIDGE CITY CENTRE, CB2 3BJ | GRANDARCADE.CO.UK |
View from the Press Box Doug Shulman It seems impossible to avoid the Covid issues which have dominated our news for close to 22 months now, with football experiencing its fair share of the suffering. In my programme piece for the opening day of the campaign against Oxford, I said how much of a relief it was that the worst of the problems appeared to be behind us and, after a full season of covering games in empty stadiums, crowds would be back with us to crank up the atmosphere. The emergence of the Omicron has now taken hold, though, and at the time of writing, 25 of the 44 scheduled Boxing Day fixtures in our top four divisions had been called off as a result of positive cases at countless clubs. The rules being, that a club can trigger a postponement if less than 14 players, (including a goalkeeper) are available from their registered squad list, with under-21 players not detailed on that list, with at least one league appearance, count towards that 14. As well as EFL clubs and their playing staff now working under tighter day-to-day guidelines, both Wales and Scotland have now reintroduced restrictions that see football predominantly being played behind closed doors again for an initial three-week period from Boxing Day, with the latter nation allowing only 500 people to attend outdoor sporting events. Who knows, by the time Portsmouth visit the Abbey today, those restrictions could also be in place for games played in the Premier League and EFL. The frustration of course, is that there appears to be no alternative to these temporary rulings, or potentially a circuit breaker halt to the season altogether, if we want to see a reduction in the number of cases. A sad statement to make, of course, but let us hope that if the English Leagues do opt for these restrictions, it is very much a short-term action, whilst the booster jab programme catches up with the virus. As much as nobody wishes to see measures
imposed - especially with the U’s big FA Cup tie at Newcastle just a few days away - the sad truth is that this may be needed to protect fans, matchday staff, players and everyone else attending games, whilst helping slow transmissions. I thought the decision made by Cambridge United ahead of the recent home game with Rotherham, to carry out random Covid Passport checks, was an astute one and very well implemented. As with many attending, I was checked when entering the ground and this took just a matter of seconds. To have such a momentary delay in your arrival, in return for a good level of reassurance that the club are doing all they can to protect supporters, is no hardship and, ultimately, may go some way in helping protect an NHS already under great strain. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

Academy Update
With the calendar year of 2021 now at a close and the U18s FA Youth Cup Fourth Round tie with Leeds United on the horizon, we take a look back at the Academy’s year… From First Team debuts and England call-ups to educational milestones being reached from the Club’s scholars, the Academy has made the most of a year that was full of challenges to overcome. Academy Manager Tom Pell said, “We feel we have made a lot of progress this year across the board, which is really pleasing after an extremely difficult 2020.

CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V PORTSMOUTH
“One of the highlights has to be the outstanding performances of our U18s, who have had an average age of only 16 year and 11 months. Given that clubs are eligible to play three U19s, we see the fact that we have only lost once in the league and made it to the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup as a really positive achievement. “We have had a full schoolboy programme up and running this year which in comparison to last season is so pleasing. There have been so many activities for the players to participate in, such as training sessions, games, festivals, physical testing, tournaments and being able to watch the First Team at the Abbey. “The Academic progress of our scholars has also been superb. We have never had so many players undertaking A Levels, in addition to their BTEC and SEP. The hard work, dedication and quality of work from the boys has been exceptional and we have very grateful to our Education Staff at the Club, as well as our partners at Cambridge Regional College.” A quick glance at many team sheets for Mark Bonner’s team this season will reveal a number of Academy names as the Club’s production line continues to contribute
towards the First Team squad. The Club’s youngsters have made a particularly impressive impact in the Papa John’s Trophy, where the team have made it to the last 16 of the competition thanks to a heavily influenced Academy team. The likes of Liam Bennett, Lewis Simper, Ben Worman and Kai Yearn have all played a major part in the team’s run so far. Ben Worman has enjoyed a breakthrough season across all competitions, making 12 in total and scoring his first senior goal for the club, an outstanding effort to help secure a league win at Morecambe. 16-year-old Kai Yearn has also been the subject of many headlines as he has made his first team debut, become the club’s youngest ever goalscorer and received an England U17s call-up. “The opportunities for our players in the Academy and who have recently graduated has been brilliant. You only have to look at our bench against Rotherham on Saturday to see five Academy products on it,” Pell said. “Not having to cement ourselves in group bubbles has meant that there have been many more First Team training opportunities for our younger players than ever before, which is a great experience for them and can only help in their future development.” “Ben and Kai have had superb seasons so far with Ben cementing his place as a regular part of the First Team squad and Kai’s excellent form for the U18s being recognised by an England call-up. “It goes to show that you don’t have to be part of a Category 1 Academy to get International recognition and we hope that Kai’s achievement can offer inspiration to our
younger Academy players in that you can achieve anything, should you put the work in. “We feel that we are improving all the time as an Academy but we are humble enough to know we have a long way to go to get to the level we want to.” With the January date now set for the FA Youth Cup match against Leeds United, the match provides the perfect opportunity for the Academy to get 2022 off to the best start possible. The U18s have reached the Fourth Round for the first time 2016/17 following wins against Southend United, Corinthian Casuals and Oxford United. Pell said, “It will be a fantastic occasion and a test for our boys. We would love to see as many U’s supporters as possible support the team to create a really special atmosphere and experience that will stay with the players for a very long time. “I remember the last time Leeds United visited the Abbey Stadium in the FA Youth Cup - our very own Barry Corr scored for the Premier League side in front of over 2,000 fans. If we could get anything near that kind of support, that would be brilliant.” “In the meantime, on behalf of all Academy staff, I would like to wish all of our players, parents and supporters a very happy festive period and would like to thank them for helping create such a great environment at our Club.” The FA Youth Cup Fourth Round match against Leeds United U18s takes place at 7pm on Wednesday 19th January at the Abbey Stadium. Tickets are available for £3 Adults and £1 U18s from www.cufctickets.com. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk
