v Rotherham UTD SAT DECEMBER 18 2021 Kick-Off: 3.00pm
Fan noticeboard WELCOME Firstly, I would like to wish all U’s fans a joyful festive season and a happy, healthy new year. It feels like the schedule over the festive season is less intense than usual, which can only be a bonus for our team and players. Indeed, this is the first week since mid-October that we haven’t had a midweek game. Today we face the league leaders and I suspect our boys will be heading into the game eager to cause an upset. Time and time again this team has proved they can compete with the best, as shown in our last match against the Millers where we came agonisingly close to pulling off a shock result. Much of the talk ahead of today’s match will be surrounding the COVID passport checks. We understand that this move splits opinion, however, it is the right thing for us to do at this moment in time to ensure we don’t go back to the dark days of lockdown and behind-closed-doors football. United in Endeavour.

In a period where we have played more games with fewer players than most teams in the league, we are giving a good account of ourselves. We were sung off the pitch by our 1700 away fans last weekend and that tells you everything you need to know about what they thought of the performance. The noise in the away end was outstanding and it looked as though everyone enjoyed both the day out and the game.
It is the biggest crowd we have played in-front of so far since our step up after a year of no fans last year and I thought we took the ball played under pressure really well. We had a counter attacking threat, but we used the ball intelligently throughout the game. I thought we played well and had a good threat throughout the game. The statistics say it was an even game, and maybe a draw would have been a fair result, but I certainly don’t think we deserved to go home defeated. I actually said to the players it might be one of our best performances in lots of areas this season, so I am really pleased with the progress that we are making. The intensity has gone up this year, in terms of the quality of the opposition, the speed of the game, the ball inplay time and the atmosphere in the stadiums, which all cost you physically and mentally. That is why we are glad of this midweek break. Hopefully those days off have given us a chance to recharge a little bit, but the players have done unbelievably well to get through in both cup competitions and to pick up some league points along the way. We are not halfway through the season yet, so we know we have got a long way to go, but we are pleased with the start and look forward now to freshening everybody up and getting ready for Rotherham and Wycombe. We know we are close, but when you have got the game and it is there for you to take, that is where you’ve got to take it. That’s just that clinical nature of the game. We certainly took nothing from the game in terms of points last week, but the small consolation is we are going toe-to-toe with big clubs, huge budgets, massive expectations, great atmospheres and we are getting better and improving all the time. Today’s challenge is a great one. Rotherham are the best team we have played so far this season and we look forward to testing ourselves against them again so soon. Finally, I would like to wish all our supporters a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Ian Mather CEO We went over 20 years without playing a league game against Rotherham and now we play them for the second time in five weeks! In any event, it is great to welcome all from South Yorkshire to the Abbey. Our fans enjoyed a great away day at the excellent New York Stadium. The Abbey is a bit different with a charm of its own. As we approach Christmas we all would have hoped that Covid risks would be much reduced from last year. That we would be free from restrictions and looking forward to a much more normal festive period and New Year. Sadly, this is not the case and Omicron seems determined to spoil the party. Following discussions with our Safety Advisory Group and Public Health on Wednesday this week we are going to adopt the Covid Passport system that applies to larger venues, on a voluntary basis. As set out on our website and social media channels the new restrictions include: *Covid Passports will be required for all attending the game. Random checks will be made. This voluntary use of the Covid Passport will be kept under review. *Face coverings will be required in all internal areas when not eating or drinking. They will not be required outside. Public Health explained that Cambridgeshire is a high area of infection and has been given Enhanced Response Area status vital to protect NHS and vital services Cambridgeshire County Council. We ask all those visiting, including our staff, to abide by these changes. We all have our role to play in containing the transmission of Covid. If we look back to last year we can see what might happen if we don’t: Measures could range from reduced access to bars/ hospitality areas to socially distanced crowds and a limit on our crowd of 2,000. We could have a ban on away travel – a horrible thought as we plan our trips up to Newcastle. Ultimately we could be playing behind closed doors. Personally, I think we have a good chance of avoiding these backward steps. To do so will
require a collective effort from everyone. Last year we were on a learning curve. We now know the script. Let’s stick to it. On a brighter note, it was great to see and hear our 1,700 fans at Charlton. Ok, we lost but all could see the team gave it everything. It could have been different. We saw an entertaining game and it was a great day out. This season our away support has been brilliant. Hopefully we will have an even bigger following at St James’. It is the FA Cup and anything could happen… This is our last game before Christmas and, on behalf of our club, I wish everyone a happy and safe time over the holiday period. For now, we face Rotherham. They are very good but we have shown we can be very good as well. Enjoy the game. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Today’s visitors ROTHERHAM Following the same script in which has seen the Millers yo-yo between the second and third tier for the last five seasons, Paul Warne’s side make the 248-mile round trip to the Abbey Stadium this afternoon sitting at the summit of League One, looking to extend on their impressive 20-game unbeaten run, a run that’s not bettered by anyone in the top four divisions of English Football. The Miller’s incredible run, which stretches back to the start of September and consist of 15 wins and five draws, has seen Paul Warne’s side move from 13th in League One to the top of the table. Wigan Athletic’s 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town at the weekend saw the Millers move into championship contention thanks to their 3-1 win over Burton Albion. Freddie Ladapo’s brace, coupled with Daniel Barlaser’s late free kick sealed the Millers’ seventh win in their
8

last eight outings in all competitions. Prior to last weekend’s victory over Burton Albion, Rotherham hit five for the fourth time this season, with Freddie Ladapo, Mickel Miller, Dan Barlaser and Chiedozie Ogbene all contributing as the Miller’s ran out comfortable 5-1 victors over Steve Evans’ Gills. Cambridge United will come as no stranger to Paul Warne’s side, who only played host to the U’s a month ago. Ben Wiles and Daniel Barlaser’s goals saw the Millers hold a 2-0 lead going into half time, before Sam Smith’s curling effort looked to set up a tense finish at the New York Stadium. However, after weathering a storm of Cambridge United attacks throughout the second half, Freddie Ladapo ensured the points would be staying in South Yorkshire with an 84th minute header.
The Millers were fortunate to keep hold of prized asset Michael Smith throughout the summer, after the winger bagged ten Championship goals in what was a disappointing season for Paul Warne’s side last campaign. The former Bury and Portsmouth man, now somewhat of an EFL veteran at the age of 30, has not let off this season, having already contributed to 17 goals (12G, 5A) in just 20 League One appearances. ■

From the SLO DAVE MATTHEW-JONES This afternoon we welcome the supporters, officials and players of Rotherham United to the Abbey Stadium. It is less than a month since the two sides met at the New York Stadium, however much has happened since then, both on and off the pitch. Cambridge United have advanced to the next rounds of both the Papa John’s Trophy and the FA Cup and the match at St James’ Park against Newcastle is certainly one to whet the appetite. Tickets are now on sale for the away coach, as is the Boxing Day match at Wycombe Wanderers. I have been involved in supporter matters with different organisations for more than 20 years and we seem to finally have a plan to take football forwards in England following the Fan Led Review. It is an opportunity that will bring about a fairer system, a fairer distribution of funds across the pyramid, a regulator who will oversee the game properly and the opportunity to get supporters more involved at their clubs. It cannot be allowed to fail. Supporters cannot just sit back and accept that the review will go through without some opposition, which there already is in some quarters. It is your responsibility to ensure the game is fit for the next generation, for our children and grandchildren. It is up to everyone wanting a fairer system to make sure these changes happen and help the organisations that are trying to help you. There may not be another chance in our lifetime to ensure fairness and openness. The FSA has campaigned for these changes on behalf of supporters and are asking supporters to help make sure the Government implement the changes in the review. They would like supporters and supporters’ groups to contact their MP’s urging them to back the proposals and get their support for the report by writing to Nadine Dorries the secretary of state for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). They believe most MPs will support the
review’s proposals, but want to ensure the Government hears from all the elected representatives from across the country. Please encourage everyone you know who is a football supporter to write. Following the debacle of the European Super League during the summer, many supporters of those clubs will also be concerned about their club’s future. Please encourage them to support the review. It is in their interest to do so. This needs everyone to be involved if it is to have real success Following the recent Government regulations concerning COVID-19, please be patient and ensure you follow the advice, requirements and rules as you did previously. Please have the relevant paperwork ready when you come on Matchdays. It will speed everything up when getting to the turnstiles. We know you will and thank you for doing so in advance. Stay safe, look after yourself and enjoy the upcoming festive period. You can contact me by emailing dave. matthew-jones@cambridge-united. co.uk. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Memories Down CUT THROAT LANE Afternoon and seasonal greetings from the old codgers at Coconuts. I hope those who travelled to the Valley by boat last week enjoyed themselves. I certainly did. Sunday was a very quiet affair. We are travelling back to 18th December 1999 for our bout of reminiscence on the programme front today, and a third tier encounter with the Latics from Oldham. This was our 21st competitive encounter since we entered the League in 1970 and to this day I still harbour bitter memories when I hear mere mention of their name. This goes back to the three epic cup ties in the first half of January in 1974 which ended in bitter disappointment at the City Ground in Nottingham. Even the Oldham manager admitted that the better team lost. Remarkably, my old man let me go with him and miss school for the day. He was stricter than a Methodist Minister with a bull whip but I suspect my old dear would have said he was a bit more selective when it came to the mighty U’s! Generally, the atmosphere around the club seemed quite positive. Whilst the previous game against Barnet had been postponed, we were still coming off knocking Crystal Palace out of the FA Cup Third Round. Redemption
for nearly ten years earlier, maybe. That game was on a Friday night so signs even then nearly a quarter of a century ago - that the FA Cup was being messed around with. Anybody remember why the Third Round was as early as December? Me neither. Leafing through the programme, I thought the sponsorship page was interesting. Whatever happened to ‘the Buglies’? Answers on a postcard please. There are some very familiar old faces on Graham Eales’ PR page - you know who you are. God bless Andrew Bennett. And lots of CUFC/Oldham connections highlighted, which we don’t see so much of these days in programmes. Anyway, the Latics beat us 3-2 that day and completed the double the following April with a 1-0 victory. Finally, on this day in 218 BC, Hannibal’s Carthaginian army commenced battle with the Romans in the second of the Punic Wars in the battle of the Trebia fought on Italian soil. By 23 December, Tiberius Sempronius Longus had been heavily defeated and it took until 202 BC for the Romans to finally tame the leader/warrior from North Africa. You are duly enriched. Enjoy yourselves. ■

Hot OffAndrew the Habbin Stephen
“Quality is everyone’s responsibility” W.E. Deeming They say that a week is a long time in politics. So it is in football. This last week should have persuaded even the most cynical of Habbinites that we are in League One by right and capable of competing with any of the so called giants who expect to dominate it. There is, quite rightly, huge excitement about our FA. Cup tie against newly wealthy, and historically great, Newcastle United. However, their defence looks frail and that is not good news when you are about to play a team like ours which knows how to break quickly. We have been underdogs all season and will be again at St James’ Park, but it is not beyond us to pull off an upset. I remain much more interested in league points and I am becoming more confident by the week that we are better than simply good enough to stay up. There was a strange atmosphere in Cheltenham last Tuesday, that was nothing to do with the storm which had been raging across the country. I was a little surprised to see an elderly home supporter gazing at me with ill disguised hatred before the match and after, the atmosphere was not really what I am used to in that lovely town. Sadly, one of the young lads who stands close to our drummer was assaulted, presumably
because we had the temerity to win 5-0 away from home. It is a real shame that some so called fans can’t accept defeat, as we all have to from time to time. That said, our second half performance was exhilarating. Cheltenham may have been slightly better than us last season but this time, quite frankly, we destroyed them. We were as good as we have been for many years and the support of the few hundred U’s fans was fantastic. It was a night to remember. A few days later, the away end at Charlton was much busier and the amber hordes gave the team deafening support throughout. The passion of our fans is second to none and we recognised that, despite the scoreline, we had played well enough to win. Many Charlton fans thought so too. It is a measure of how far we have come that 1,700 of us went home disappointed that we hadn’t won. And so, Rotherham. They are currently top and have come a long way since we had to walk through a scrapyard to get into their ground. I have vivid memories of losing 3-2 there and apparently blowing our chances of winning the league. The following weekend Southend imploded at home and we were champions after all. As I said, a week is a long time in football and in life. Whatever happens next week, Rotherham will know that they’ve been in a fight. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Latest News The Men’s and Women’s 2022 Varsity Matches between Cambridge University Association Football Club and Oxford University Association Football Club will be played at the Abbey Stadium... Taking place on Sunday 13 March 2022, the Abbey will play host to the oldest game in football for the first time since 2014/15. The Women’s match will get the action underway at 1:30pm before the Men take to the pitch at 4:30pm. CEO Ian Mather said, “We are delighted to see the Varsity Match return to The Abbey for the first time in seven years. We want this to be a fun day out for everyone in Cambridge. The men’s match has been played since the 1873/74 season and, sad to say, Cambridge have never won when the game has been played in Cambridge. That is some losing streak to overcome. “We will also be hosting the Women’s game on the same day and it would be great to
get lots of local support to cheer on both teams.” • Principal Partner sponsorship for the match is still available, with the following package up for grabs: • Branded a Principal Partner for the 2022 Varsity Match • Executive Lounge Premium Hospitality (x1 Table of 10) including three-course dining and wine • One Full Page advert within the Varsity Matchday Programme • Company Logo on the Varsity Sponsors graphic, promoted via Cambridge University, Oxford University and Cambridge United FC • Tannoy announcement before each of the two fixtures Tickets for both matches cost £10 for Adults, £8 for Students and are available now from cufctickets.com.

Around the Division LEAGUE ONE ROUND-UP Unbeaten in 20, Rotherham United are simply having a wonderful Christmas time after they dispatched Burton Albion 3-1 at the New York Stadium. Freddie Ladapo entered double figures for the campaign by striking either side of a Kane Hemmings goal before Dan Barlaser killed the game off to ensure the Millers retain pole position and consign the Brewers to 13th after successive defeats. Restored to the fold, James Norwood prevented a blue Christmas for Ipswich Town by hopping off the bench and rescuing a 1-1 draw against promotion-chasing Wigan Athletic. Despite surrendering the opportunity to remain joint-top, the Latics are six unbeaten. As for the East Anglian outfit, who parted ways with manager Paul Cook recently, they slip to 12th after the solitary win in six – ex-defender John McGreal is currently calling the shots. After travelling what must have felt like 2000 miles, Plymouth Argyle returned home from Sunderland with a 2-1 defeat as their winless run was extended to a concerning five matches. Taking command quickly, the Black Cats raced ahead thanks to early finishes from Dan Neil and Nathan Broadhead – his fourth goal in four. Dan Scarr conjured up a consolation, but it wasn’t to be as the Pilgrims, who saw manager Ryan Lowe venture to Preston North End in the week, dropped to 6th. Generating momentum, Lee Johnson’s men are rocking around the Christmas three and without defeat in six. A thriller at the death saw Wycombe Wanderers snatch a 2-2 draw at home to AFC Wimbledon. The visitors took the lead twice through Jack Rudoni, but Gareth Ainsworth’s side showed resilience to peg back their opponents via Adebayo Akinfenwa and the reliable Joe Jacobson. Last Christmas, the Chairboys were rooted
22
CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V ROTHERHAM UNITED F.C.
to the bottom of the Championship. A year on, they’re the last of three all boasting 42 points. Steadying the ship, the Dons occupy 17th. Oxford United extended their unbeaten run to nine games with a 1-2 comeback victory over MK Dons. Hiram Boateng drew first blood for the hosts, before Matty Taylor and Mark Sykes sealed maximum points. Going under the radar and quietly climbing the ladder, the U’s step into Christmas in 5th – whereas Liam Manning’s side falter to 9th. Goal difference separates firing Sheffield Wednesday from the play-offs after Darren Moore’s team secured a 0-2 win at Crewe Alexandra. Goals from Barry Bannan and Lee Gregory helped ease the Owls to a 12th game unbeaten – the aim now is to turn draws into wins. On the contrary, it’ll be lonely this Christmas for the Railwaymen – four from safety, they’re situated at the basement. Marcus Harness and Connor Ogilvie converted at key times to wrap up a 2-0 victory against Morecambe at Fratton Park. Peace on earth, can it be? Pompey soar to 8th, five wins in six under Danny Cowley. Entering the relegation zone for the first time this season, the Shrimps are 21st and have won once in their last eleven. Tommy Leigh scored the only goal of the encounter as Accrington Stanley broke into 10th position with a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers. Their third win in four, it’s the most wonderful form of the year for John Coleman. Six away defeats on the bounce, without scoring in any, the Trotters slip to 15th. A brace from Conor Washington helped climb Charlton Athletic to the top half of the table after they dispatched a spirited Cambridge United 2-0 at the Valley. Before
Johnnie Jackson, the Addicks earned nine points from 13. Under his tutelage, they’ve got 20 points from 9 and are cemented in 11th. As for the U’s, they’re driving home for Christmas in a healthy 16th despite one success in six. Cheltenham Town and Lincoln City played out an absorbing 2-2 draw at Whaddon Road. After capitalising on Alfie May’s opener, Teddy Bishop’s brace looked destined to end the visitors’ five-game winless run. However, that was snatched from them deep into stoppage time when, in dulci jubilo, Matty Blair headed home to share the spoils. A consistent start of 7 wins, draws and losses puts the Robins in 14th and drops the uninspiring Imps to 18th. Fleetwood Town recorded successive wins and secured a two-point gap over the drop
after they creeped past fellow strugglers Gillingham 2-1 at Highbury. Harrison Biggins and Tom Clarke found the back of the net to ensure a comfortable advantage, despite a nervy conclusion which saw Robbie McKenzie reduce the deficit. Winless in eight with their last five resulting in defeats, the Gills are 22nd – thank God it’s Christmas. Joseph Olowu headed in a late winner as Doncaster Rovers picked up an invaluable 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town. A missed opportunity to steer well away from danger, the Shrews float above the bottom four after picking up maximum points in the solitary match in six. Despite a first success in eight for Rovers, who relieved Richie Wellens of his duties last week, they will stay another day in the relegation zone. ■ Owen Mizon

Cambridge United fell to a 2-0 defeat against Charlton on Saturday in a hotly-contested clash at the Valley. Played with nearly 25,000 supporters in attendance - the biggest league crowd that the U’s have played in-front of since May 1993 – chances went begging for United throughout the match, which the home side punished as a brace from Conor Washington sealed the victory for the Addicks.

Another Saturday and another mouth-watering fixture at the Abbey - this time in high flyers Rotherham. On behalf of everyone connected to the Women’s team, we wish Mark and the team the best of luck for today. The last couple of weeks have not seen the Women’s team perform at the level we saw earlier in the season. That has been in part due to players not being available, none more so than influential winger Emma Jenkins who has been out for almost 2 months now with an ankle ligament injury. This has meant a chance for others to step up and stake a claim for a place and we have recently seen four players who are just 16 years
old make the first team squad. This shows how bright the future is with our Development team providing a steady stream of talented players who are making first team appearances at such an early stage of their careers. Last Sunday we travelled to London Seaward who had recorded a 2-0 win in our meeting just a couple of weeks before. With a pitch badly affected by the heavy rain, the surface was not the best for playing good football but as always it is a challenge that both teams must overcome. The game turned out to be a thriller, although I am not sure I want to be going through a
game like that too often! The hosts took the lead, but shortly after a smart turn and left foot strike from top scorer Ruth Fox found the bottom corner to equalise. London Seaward then scored a second goal just before half time to take a 2-1 lead. However, the one thing we all know is the U’s will keep battling and the equaliser came quickly into the second half when Abbi Griffin capitalised on a defensive error. With us now getting on top, it seemed like we might go on to get the winner, but a wonder strike from 20 yards out found the top of the net to give the hosts a 3-2 lead with 15 minutes to go. Our Women never stopped giving their all and we were rewarded in the 92nd minute when Ruth Fox added her second goal and the third equaliser of the game from a corner to take a point back home. There is still plenty to work on, but with players due to soon return from injury, young players coming through and a new signing to join in January, there is lots to look forward to in the New Year. That just leaves me to say a very Merry Christmas to you all on behalf of the Women’s team. Let’s get behind the boys today as we look for an early present of another three points! Up The U’s! ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

A BIG SEASON IN STORE VISIT THE NEW CAMBRIDGE UNITED STORE AT GRAND ARCADE
CAMBRIDGE CITY CENTRE, CB2 3BJ | GRANDARCADE.CO.UK |
View from the Press Box Doug Shulman It has been a roller coaster few weeks for the U’s, with cup wins, even bigger cup draws, goals aplenty and long-standing records broken. It’s why we love the game so much, thanks to its habit of producing a head-turning moment when you least expect it! The last time we gathered at the Abbey two weeks ago, most people in the ground would have wagered, with two minutes left on the clock, that the U’s would be travelling to Exeter for an unwanted FA Cup replay. Then, up pops Harvey Knibbs in the 88th minute cue pandemonium - to secure a 2-1 win, the accompanying prize money and a place in the third round draw. Two days later, with said draw nearing its end, Newcastle are given a home draw and everyone holds their breath, to then see ball number 53 pulled from the bag and, hey presto, the U’s are off to St James Park. The trip to the North-East is guaranteed to be a fantastic day out for supporters, a superb occasion for Mark Bonner’s men and, importantly, a welcome injection of unexpected, (there’s that word again…) income for club finances. The day will also be a special one for me personally, with my Wife being from Newcastle and a big Toon fan and plenty of our family residing on the black and white side of the Tyne. We have been regular visitors to St James’ over the years and it is always a special atmosphere so, for those U’s supporters travelling up on January 8th that have perhaps not been to Newcastle before, you are set for a memorable day, hopefully amongst a capacity 50,000 plus crowd. Just 24 hours after the draw, the U’s travelled to Cheltenham and, after a four-game winless league run, most thought this might be a very tough night against a side who, under Michael Duff, are usually defensively strong and concede very few goals. We need not have worried. I thought the way Mark Bonner’s
men managed the blustery conditions, both with and without the wind at their backs, was excellent and, with every player on top of their game, the scoreline in no way flattered the U’s. Joe Ironside bagged his first hatrick for the club and could have scored more, with the U’s racking up their biggest win in the English third tier since walloping Rotherham 6-1 in September 2000. Talking of records, last Saturday’s sojourn to Charlton proved the biggest league gate the side have played in front of for many years. The 24,886 in attendance, who created a superb noise, surpassed the 27,339 who squeezed into Upton Park in May 1993 when the U’s visited West Ham. No doubt that will be beaten before the season is over! ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

Academy Update After forcing a thrilling 2-2 draw, Cambridge United’s youngsters held their nerves from the spot to dispatch Oxford United and advance from the Third Round of the FA Youth Cup at the Abbey Stadium. In a frantic second-half, a Saleem Akanbi barnstormer was cancelled out by strikes from Gatlin O’Donker and Adam Smith. Just when the visitors looked destined to secure their passage into the next stage, Kai Yearn coolly slotted home on the cusp of full-time. Galvanised, the U’s remained composed from 12 yards to secure a 4-2 shootout victory and earn a home tie against Category One outfit Leeds United in their first appearance in the Fourth Round since 2016/17. Both sides had to show real character when navigating their path to tonight’s clash. Cambridge edged out Southend United and cruised to victory over Corinthian-Casuals, whereas Oxford dispatched Sutton Common Rovers and overcame Reading City. In their respective divisions, the hosts were 2nd and flying - falling to the solitary defeat in their opening 11 games. The visitors were situated 5th and eager to generate momentum after a run of one win in seven. In a physical start to proceedings, with plenty of battles in the air contested, the visitors started the brightest and tested the U’s

backline in the 6th minute. Ben Watts’ jinking run into the penalty area caused havoc, pulling the trigger from close-range but was denied by a strong block from captain Harvey Beckett. Yearn stamped some authority six minutes later – after being played in, the England U17 lashed an attempt towards the bottom right corner which Eddie Brearey clawed out for a corner. The boys in amber had the ball in the back of the net on the 14th minute when an excellent looping header from 10 yards by Dan Barton was met by a racing Brandon Njoku who poked home. However, the striker’s finish was disallowed for offside. With their tails up, Jimmy Unwin’s side proved menacing in every attack. First Year scholar Barton’s pace and trickery cut open Oxford down the right before he whipped in a teasing cross for Saleem Akanbi who fired a header goal bounds but Brearey darted back to catch the attempt. It was the visitors’ turn to bulge the onion bag on the 40th minute when Smith rounded off a nice passage of play, but the opponents’ wellworked play was chalked off. The last opportunity of the half was carved out by last season’s top scorer Glenn McConnell, who did well to twist and turn inside the box on 42 before firing an attempt from 12 yards
which looked destined to trickle in before a body on the line prevented the shot. It concluded an evenly-matched first period – with the hosts in the ascendency in terms of attempts after conjuring up well-worked spells in the final third. Perhaps rueing their opportunities from the first half, the U’s more than made up for it on the 47th minute when Akanbi picked his spot from just under 30 yards and fired a sublime strike into the top left corner to break deadlock and hand his side the perfect start. The lead was short-lived, nonetheless, as Oxford equalised ten minutes later. A fumbled shot from Josh Anifowose was on a plate for O’Donker who pounced to place home with power to level the sides. Both sides were doing a good job of cancelling each other out as the half progressed. With one eye keen to grab the advantage, the other was focused on remaining assuring defensively. The next scare came on the 69th minute when Anifowose’s deep cross from the right was met by Tom Finch who dived and punched the danger away – before bouncing off Smith and flying inches wide of the crossbar. A United free-kick from the far right on 77 was cleared by goalkeeper Brearey, but fell to Beckett who after composing himself couldn’t convert from the six-yard box as the attempt fizzed wide. This kickstarted a dominant period for Oxford - who rampantly turned on the gas. First, Josh Johnson scampered forwards from an angle and scampered forwards from an angle and cut into the middle but leaned back and couldn’t generate enough curl as it went well wide of Finch’s left post on 81. O’Donker came close
to grabbing a brace moments later after he couldn’t connect with Smith’s teasing cross. The barrage of pressure from the South West outfit paid off on the 85th minute when Smith picked the ball up on the corner of the box, turning and applaudingly drilling the ball into the bottom left corner past a helpless Finch. In need of a rapid reaction to the setback, the hosts found a new lease of life at a critical moment when, deep into added time, a moment of magic from United’s youngest-ever senior goalscorer Yearn helped level matters as he exquisitely slotted into the bottom corner to spark delirium and galvanise the boys. Extra-time was a real indication that both sides were showing fatigue after a draining 90 minutes packed with grit and determination. With no clear-cut chances, the game remained very much in balance whilst it creeped towards a penalty shoot-out to help determine the sides. The U’s were hoping experience of their First Round success from the spot at Roots Hall would put them in good stead as they stepped up. That proved evident as McConnell, Yearn, Braithwaite and Winterbone all dispatched their penalties before Finch sealed success by saving Mac Masters’ decisive penalty as the young U’s ensured the cup run continued. Unwin’s side will face Leeds United in the next round with a date still to be confirmed. Make sure you get down to the Abbey for what will be an amazing spectacle! ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk
