MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ————
It was only a few weeks ago we navigated our way through a tough away day in Essex, returning with a hard-fought win in a real physical contest. That game shows us today is a tough task again and Southend will be encouraged by an excellent win midweek at Newport. Our own midweek game didn’t go as planned or as we hoped slipping to defeat at Salford. They’re a good team full of players that have played in the level above and are very open about their expectations and ambitions. Unfortunately we gave them a foot up with the goals in the first half and didn’t make them defend enough. We did however make some good opportunities ourselves and have a good share of possession, but made too many errors which they punished us for. This is uncharacteristic for us and hurts, but we will bounce back and find a better level again. It had been a long few days on the road and to come home with three points from the six is a return that keeps us on track with our targets for the month. We need a strong performance this afternoon on what will no doubt be a cold one having seen the weather throughout the week which has www.cambridge-united.co.uk

continued a challenging 2021 for us. We have some good challenges ahead of us and the league continues to be as tight as always. Our consistency in January has been great and we need more consecutive results to keep in and around the top seven for as long as possible. With 18 games remaining there will be many ups and downs to come, but we will keep ourselves focussed on ourselves and the next game. January’s form saw us rewarded with the Manager of the Month and Player of the Month trophies. Wes’ influence on the team is clear for all to see and his contribution to the team in January was superb, it is excellent recognition for him and so good to see the hunger, quality and humility he goes about his work with. We are all privileged to have him here, but I have to say I’m gutted for our supporters that they are unable to see him live. The Manager of the Month award comes our way for the second time this season and is received after a much busier month than last time. It’s without doubt been the toughest month of the season and the character, work ethic and resilience of everybody has delivered the results. Here’s hoping for a successful afternoon and to continue our solid form in the weeks ahead. ■

BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Welcome to Southend. In this most unusual of seasons it is only 25 days since we played each other at Roots Hall and, hot off the back of beating Newport on Tuesday, this promises to be a very competitive match. We didn’t have our best evening on the pitch against Salford but we did have another phenomenal effort from our supporters off it! We broke the 1,000 match pass milestone (1,163 to be exact) for the first time for a midweek fixture. Out of the 12 teams playing on Tuesday we had the second highest level of passes sold (only just second at that). To give some idea of scale, one team sold under 100. These sales really are a massive help so please keep up the support.
WE BROKE THE 1,000 MATCH PASS MILESTONE (1,163 TO BE EXACT) FOR THE FIRST TIME FOR A MIDWEEK FIXTURE For those who have tuned in this year, what a January we had! Taking 14 points from 18 was a fantastic return and, no wonder then that Mark Bonner was named as Sky Bet League Two Manager of the Month and Wes Hoolahan is League Two Player of the Month. They have both done a brilliant job and deserve every bit of praise that comes their way. Many have commented on Mark’s youth as a Head Coach (35) and the fact that Wes is 38 and playing great football. The take away – when it comes to high performance age doesn’t matter – it’s ability that counts. On the question of high levels of performance, the Abbey has a well-earned reputation for providing one of the best playing surfaces in the League. Our A team of Ian Darler, Mick Brown and many volunteers have built this reputation with lots of skill and hard work. Sadly, there are other ingredients that go to www.cambridge-united.co.uk
make a top pitch. Every year there is some repair and rejuvenation work needed over the summer months. Last year, due to Covid, it was simply not possible to do the very important work that was planned. We then moved into a crowded season with lots of games to be played followed by the wettest January for many years – it was also the coldest since 2010. Adding this all together it is a miracle we have any grass to play on at all! The fact that we have grass and a playable surface is down to our A team working miracles. We will get through to the end of the season with some mending on the way. The good news for next season is that we have planned to do some major refurbishment work over the summer so that when we kick off season 21/22 we will have a pitch to be proud of. So, buy your pass, fire up the laptop, connect with your HDMI cable and enjoy the game. ■

TODAY’S VISITORS ———— SOUTHEND UNITED ———— Few people support a team in the lower leagues for the glory - generally, there’s more heartache than joy, but fans of Southend could be forgiven for thinking their particular dose of hardship has been piled into the last two seasons. Having survived the League One drop by the skin of their teeth in 2019, they couldn’t avoid being pulled into the mire last term, eventually having the dreaded “R” confirmed when the campaign was curtailed - the Shrimpers were second bottom and 16 points adrift of safety at that point. Fast forward to this season and they are battling for survival once again with their EFL status in jeopardy this time. Off-field
matters haven’t helped, with a winding up order finally dismissed in October having been adjourned four times. Anyone who witnessed their first half display against the U’s in January, or Tuesday’s excellent win at Newport will know today’s visitors shouldn’t be taken lightly - but the campaign viewed in a wider context suggests there are still big battles ahead if they’re to avoid a second consecutive drop zone finish.

THE MANAGER – MARK MOLESLEY
Mark Molesley’s side embarked on a run of one defeat in eight games claiming crucial victories against Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Colchester and Barrow to ensure they started 2021 with hope. Reality set in soon afterwards, though, with the 5-1 reverse at Port Vale at the end of last month condemning Southend to a fourth straight defeat and sealing their place at the foot of the League Two table. They brought that losing sequence to an impressive end on Tuesday, beating Newport and lifting themselves off the bottom in the process. The victory in South Wales was only the Shrimpers’ second away from home in the

Molesley arrived at Southend in August having enjoyed a successful spell managing Weymouth in the non-league ranks. He took the Terras into the National League having secured back to back promotions before making the move to Essex. Molesley has also coached Bournemouth’s under 21’s – a job he combined with his fulltime role as Weymouth manager. The 39 year old featured previously as a player for the Cherries, making over 50 appearances, he also had spells at Cambridge City, Stevenage, Grays Athletic, Aldershot and Exeter. WES HOOLAHAN ———— PLAYER INTERVIEW ———— The Hoolahan mantelpiece has taken the strain of yet another accolade this week, with the Irishman’s magical form through January earning him League Two’s Player of the Month award. Two goals, yet more assists and some quite ridiculous individual displays from the 38year old aside, Hoolahan says credit for his latest honour should be laid at the feet of his teammates. He said: “It’s been a great month. We won so many games and went through January in the middle of that seven game unbeaten run, so it really has been a positive month. It’s certainly been nice to get the assists and a couple of goals to go with it. I’m delighted to win the award, but I couldn’t have done it without any of the other lads. “It’s been brilliant, I came here wanting to get the games, wanted to play and be competitive and for the team to be at the right end of the League. We’re obviously at that top end so it’s going well so far.” The fact Hoolahan hasn’t featured in any of United’s midweek fixtures, as part of the carefully thought through training programme to draw out his best performances, perhaps makes his Player of the Month award that bit more impressive. He says the way United’s staff have managed him has worked perfectly in helping to contribute his maximum towards the U’s push up League Two. “I’m buzzing to be playing week in and week out, getting 90 minutes each week, hopefully that can continue. “Credit to Bonz (Mark Bonner) for the way he’s managed me and my minutes. I’ve been kept off my feet during the early part of the week, and then through the middle stage I start to get going and at the later part of the week I’m prepared for the game on Saturday. I think over the last couple of months, it’s shown that has been working out really well.” And in terms how much more strain his mantelpiece can take, Hoolahan is www.cambridge-united.co.uk
absolutely dead certain there’s room for another promotion medal come May, and is determined to add another to his magnificent C.V. “I’m hoping we can continue this journey and pick up plenty more points along the way. We really just have to keep going as we are. It is a tough League, everybody is beating everybody this season, and there’s genuinely about 14 or 15 teams that have a chance of getting promotion. “We just need to keep our heads down, continue what we’ve been doing so well, and that will push you along to where you want to be, which is promotion.”■

MEMORIES DOWN ———— CUT THROAT LANE ———— Afternoon campers and welcome to our shrimp-catching rivals from Sarfend. They are having a tough season of it led by exCambridge City old boy, Mark Molseley. Looking at the records over the years, in 36 competitive fixtures the Shrimpers have won 18 of them with 10 draws, so maybe some optimism should abound. After all the efforts to get the Salford match on I must say I had a sense of foreboding as to the game itself and the result. And don’t you hate it when your instincts are proven to be right, in the wrong way! Still top of the league though. Time to meander down Cut Throat Lane again and you’ll forgive my indulgence for returning once more to our inaugural 1970/71 season. 13 February 1971 saw us entertain the Minstermen from York City. York were enjoying a good season and ultimately picked up the final promotion spot to division 3. Three years later they found themselves in division 2 for the first time, a long way away from all those seasons lolling in the Conference. In an ultimately disappointing season the U’s managed a creditable 1-1 draw against the men in maroon - why oh why did they change their colours to red and blue - with our goal coming from Ivan Hollett, our leading marksman that season with 11 deposits in the old onion bag. A decent crowd of 4,593 was in attendance. Flicking through that day’s programme, the York line up is interesting. Phil Boyer, remember him at Norwich and Southampton? He in fact left York that season to team up with his old teammate, Ted MacDougall at Bournemouth. The Cherries were promoted too, in second place to Notts County and Mr Mac managed a paltry 42 goals! He got another 35 the following season in division 3. Note also the name of Albert Johanneson, the first black player to appear in an FA Cup final, in 1965 with Leeds. He joined York in 1970 where he ended his career at the end of the 71/72 season. Johanneson passed away in 1995 at just 55. www.cambridge-united.co.uk
IN 36 COMPETITIVE FIXTURES THE SHRIMPERS HAVE WON 18 OF THEM WITH 10 DRAWS, SO MAYBE SOME OPTIMISM SHOULD ABOUND I end with a reminder that it’s Robbie Williams’ 47th birthday today. Let us hope that Bonz and the boys dish out some entertainment accordingly! Enjoy and stay safe. Bye for now. ■

COMMUNITY TRUST ——— KICK THE HABIT ——— CUCT LAUNCH ANTI-PROBLEM GAMBLING CAMPAIGN – KICK THE HABIT
Cambridge United Community Trust (CUCT) is keen to be a positive influence in the battle against gambling harms, and has linked up with gambling support charities GamCare and Young Gamers and Gamblers Education Trust (YGAM) to help tackle the issue in a new campaign called ‘Kick the Habit’. The collaboration will focus initially on two key tracks – awareness and prevention. The awareness strand of the work will see CUCT use social media channels to promote a series of articles, podcasts and interviews, exploring the consequences of gambling problems and educating on the issue. Cambridge United legend John Taylor is our lead ambassador in supporting this campaign and he says “Admitting you have a problem is the hardest part. The next steps to recovery are you talking to someone about your addiction and then having people there to listen to you”. GamCare provides the non-judgemental, listening ear that John is referring to 24 hours a day through the National Gambling Helpline (over the phone or via live chat) as well as connecting you with others in similar situations through their online group, chatrooms and Forum. GamCare and their partners also provide a range of support services across the country, including with charity Breakeven across Cambridgeshire. The prevention side of the work will be in
www.cambridge-united.co.uk
partnership with YGAM and involve delivering sessions in schools to educate young people on the dangers of problem gambling and gaming addiction. This will touch on the issues surrounding ‘loot boxes’, virtual treasure chests containing undisclosed items that are paid for with real money, which are now prevalent in many popular games including the FIFA series. Community Trust Wellbeing Manager Vicky Neal said about ‘Kick the Habit’ “We want to be able to support individuals that are affected by gambling, either themselves or someone they are close to, by signposting them to the support GamCare offers, as well as educate our younger generations on the topic of addiction & gambling with support from YGAM’. If the issues raised by our ‘Kick the Habit’ campaign affect you or someone close to you and think your story could be helpful in raising awareness about problem gambling, please get in touch with Vicky at CUCT via email vicky. neal@cambridge-united.co.uk. CFU CORNER ———— Ben Phillips ———— It has been another busy fortnight since the last home game at the Abbey and Cambridge Fans United (CFU) have been keeping proactive for fellow supporters in a number of ways. The organisation is now in its 21st year of being a supporter’s trust & has come a long way since being instrumental in ensuring that the club survived back in 2005. Now under new leadership, we are aiming to be the driving force to help work and support the football club in projects that will help protect and enhance the future of Cambridge United Football Club & aim to promote it within the local community. This lockdown has seen CFU Trust Board members working together, volunteering to support the Club’s Community Trust with some of the initiatives being run for the wider community. CFU board members have actively started to ring fellow fans, checking in with them for a chat and seeing if they are ok, while chatting all things United through the Forever U’s campaign. Last week Connor Rifo, Nigel Browne, Colin Proctor, Dave Matthew Jones & Ben Phillips gave up some time to work with the Community Trust to deliver footballs in the community on the ‘Call for a Ball’ scheme. With the extra volunteers the Community Trust was able to deliver 141 balls in one day, to children who may not have a football to help them boost their physical & mental wellbeing during the lockdown. Fans are dearly missed at the Abbey currently due to the pandemic & CFU is working behind the scenes on initiatives that could be put in place ready for when we are all united together back where we belong. CFU understands the importance of giving fans a say in their football club and we have introduced a new-style Trust membership scheme offer. The more members we have sign up to the Supporters Trust the more powerful a voice in the football club we www.cambridge-united.co.uk
will have. It will allow us to work together on more projects that will benefit the football club and the community. We want Cambridge United to be more diverse & for everyone to feel welcome. In particular, we want more youngsters aged (16-25) to become members of CFU, as they are the next generation of football fan and are underrepresented at CFU. We want to ensure that fans can have a say in the way the Club is run. That is why we are urging everyone to become members and to encourage friends and family to join too. Annual membership prices are from five pounds and a life membership is just 50 pounds. There are a host of membership benefits and exclusive offers for CFU Members. Signing up as a member will help us reach our goal of working with the football club as its critical friend, being a voice for the fans and ensuring there is a football club for generations to come. We can have the best community relations, transparent communication and social responsibility of any club in the league. It is wonderful to be top of the league, and deservedly so, but a club is not just successful on the field. It looks after its employees, its fans and its community. Cambridge United and CFU know that. We hope you do too. To find out how to sign up to become a CFU Member today visit www.cambridgefansunited.org

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— MENTALLY STRONG PEOPLE OVERCOME SETBACKS WITH CONFIDENCE BECAUSE ADVERSITY MAKES THEM BETTER AMY MORRIN
As I write, the Beast from the East, or Storm Darcy as it is fashionably named, is bringing snow and icy blasts all the way from the Urals. Icicles hang from rooves in Barton Bendish and yet the weather was not severe enough to postpone the game at Salford yet again. A pity, since I suspect that the difference was that they hadn’t played for three weeks and we have played a lot of games in a short time, travelling miles and playing on terrible pitches. However, I can accept that and the fact that key players were unfit. What I find hard to accept is the hail of criticism, sometimes aimed at individuals, all over social media, when people can’t deal rationally with their own disappointment. There is a young forward banging goals at Wimbledon now who might have stayed here had he not been subjected to unending and pointless criticism from so called fans. Sometimes standing on Habbin North is no more pleasant than enduring the Siberian weather, but fans pay their money… So much for fickleness or fickability or whatever its called nowadays. This feels like a promotion season and when we have our best team out, it looks like one too. Intriguingly, I was interviewed by the Irish Daily Mirror about Wes Hoolahan. They revere him in Dublin and they wanted to know what we thought. Every successful side has a player who, on their day, www.cambridge-united.co.uk
is better than everyone else, someone with more vision, time on the ball and skill than anyone else. Wes is that man. I remember Hereford coming here in the early seventies with ex England winger Terry Paine in their ranks. He was forty and did nothing but amble around. Oh, and he took every free kick and corner they had. He was wonderful. And Wes is more than that. He plays in front of the back four, gets into the box. He reads situations and displays real leadership skills. We have many other really gifted players but when Wes is missing we are not the same team. He is our Jimmy Anderson and we must keep him for as long as we can. At least people will stop saying that we only play well on iFollow. The sooner the crowds can come back, the better for us all. During these long unnatural months of the pandemic the success of our team has been wonderful because of the effect it has had on the City’s morale. Cambridge is so much more than a University, however wonderful, great architecture and tourism. There is another side to the City which deserves more attention and better provision. The Community Trust have done a fine job in supporting our community, perhaps in ways that only football clubs can. It is trying much harder to cater for diversity, disability, disadvantage and need in every way it can. At the end of this season I really hope to see that we are top of the league. As much as that I want to be associated with a club that has got its values right and makes its own contribution to making society better , fairer and more tolerant. I believe that Cambridge United is making great strides in this direction. Cambridge till I die. ■

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.

Everyone loses when you step on the track
Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION
Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.
COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)
The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.
Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
