MARK BONNER ———— HEAD COACH ———— Last week’s victory at Morecambe was well deserved and the ruthless nature that we adopted was a really encouraging development that we need to make a core quality of our team. Some of the attacking play was very good and we maybe could’ve added further goals. The goals we did score were excellent and I hope we can continue to spread the goals throughout the team, showing players capable of making us a better attacking force from all over the pitch. In addition, Paul Mullin continued his fine start to the season with a brilliant hat trick that will be pleasing for him in getting started towards his own personal targets, within our team goals. The beginning of the season has been excellent for us to this point, but I don’t think we can judge how successful a start to a new season has been until we are ten games into the league programme. Over the coming weeks we need to continue our development as a team, so that we have the necessary fitness, flexibility and focus to stand us in good stead for the bulk of the season which lies ahead of us and show consistency to enable us to keep fighting to gain points.
We of course can take confidence from the games so far, and that the way in which we are working creates buy in from everybody. We are still very early in the stages of becoming a team and we are far from complete as you’d expect so early on in this team’s cycle. One of our values is to enjoy challenge and react well to any given situation. The current situation demands focus, motivation and a continued desire to improve. Adding Idris El-Mizouni to the squad this week gives us greater competition in the midfield and attacking areas. We are optimistic about the level he can bring us after spending a short period of time together last season. With the injury to Liam O’Neil sure to see him side lined for a large number of games, Idris’ introduction gives us greater depth in midfield and also the flexibility to play different shapes and systems. We are disappointed to lose Liam so early in the season but hopeful he can recover to re-join the squad in the months ahead and pick up where he left off. His performances throughout pre-season were amongst the best I’ve seen from him in his time at the Club. Without doubt we are a stronger CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V TRANMERE ROVERS

7 plans have been thwarted by a change in government guidelines. I accept that we are in a fast changing environment. I accept that the messaging might have been difficult for government to get right – allowing fans to watch games whilst tightening rules about groups mixing and encouraging home working. What we, and clubs up and down the country, need the government to see is the peril this creates for professional football. There are signs that this message is getting through – and it needs to get through quickly. There is no one solution to the financial situation created by Covid. There needs to be a mixture of measures from different sources. I believe these should include: 1. Some financial support from government along the lines of the £1.57Billion that has been provided to the Arts. 2. Some financial support from the Premier League – the PL rely on EFL clubs to develop talent and if that is to continue we need clubs to survive. 3. Some financial support from the Professional Footballers Association. TODAY’S VISITORS ———— Tranmere Rovers ———— The visitors arrive at the Abbey Stadium this afternoon looking to inject a bolt of energy into the start of their 2020/21 season, and quickly shake off the disappointing manner in which last year concluded for them. Whilst the last six months and the repercussions of the virus have been unpalatable for most Clubs, Rovers have a good case to be as frustrated as any, given the way their relegation was confirmed from League One. Since then, the manager who carried them out of the National League and League Two in consecutive seasons, Micky Mellon, has departed and Mike Jackson is the new man in the dugout at Prenton Park. The former Tranmere defender, has led a
reshuffle of the Rovers playing squad with 15 players leaving the Club, including Ismael Miller, Neil Danns, and Darren Potter. Nine have arrived in the summer, including the extended stay of highly rated striker James Vaughan, as they look for a fresh beginning in 2020/21.
FORM
The early results for Rovers suggest they are perhaps still finding their feet a little back in League Two, picking up just one draw from their first four fixtures this campaign. Both of their cup outings prior to the League start, saw Tranmere beaten in a penalty shoot-out, at the hands of Harrogate in the Carabao Cup CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V TRANMERE ROVERS
9 and Port Vale in the EFL Trophy. Whilst in the League, Jackson’s men will have been content with an opening day draw at Mansfield, but that was followed by a resounding 0-3 home defeat to Cheltenham last Saturday.
THE MANAGER
MIKE JACKSON Mike Jackson was appointed first-team manager of Tranmere Rovers in July 2020 following the departure of Micky Mellon. Prior to taking full responsibility of the side, Jackson worked as the Whites’ assistant manager from October 2016 up until his recent promotion. His previous managerial experience came at Shrewsbury Town, where he oversaw one match as caretaker boss in 2010 followed by a 19-game stint in 2014. Jackson was later made assistant to Mellon at Shrewsbury, where the pair achieved Sky Bet League One promotion in 2014/15 before making the move to Prenton Park together in October 2016. As a player, the Rovers’ boss operated as a defender and started out at Crewe Alexandra in 1992 before spending four years with Bury and seven with Preston North End. Jackson

spent a one-month loan spell at Tranmere in 2002/03 and signed for the club permanently in May 2004. A playing career spanning 18-years ended with Jackson winning the 2006/07 Sky Bet League One play-off final with Blackpool, in addition to a two-year stay with the Shrews.

Interview ———— LUKE HANNANT ———— “THERE ARE NO BAD EGGS” SAYS LUKE HANNANT, WHO FEELS THE U’S EARLY SEASON RESULTS ARE A GOOD INDICATION OF THE SQUAD’S RELENTLESS DETERMINATION TO BE UNITED IN HARD WORK The U’s midfielder is loving the energy within the U’s camp at the minute, and is sure the positive mindset and close nature of United’s first team squad is bearing fruit in their purple patch of form on the pitch. He said: “Taken into the consideration everything that has happened prior to the season starting, I think it’s been a conscious thing from the start to have a good camaraderie within the squad. The morale has been good, and everyone has shown a great determination to get through the tough times together. “The buzz around the training ground is really good. The new lads that have come into the Club over the summer have added such great
character to the team. “There are no bad eggs and everyone wants to come into work and train hard each day for each other. And the important thing is that you are seeing that out on the pitch. Every player is putting in 100% in every game, running until the 90th minute and the results are showing that. “That has to keep going now throughout the busy period that we have coming up.” With United winning back to back victories to begin a season for the first time since 2008, Hannant says it really has been the perfect way to kick off the campaign. However, he’s quick to point out the work ethic and dedication that has gone in to making it possible. CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V TRANMERE ROVERS
11 “I don’t think we could have asked for a better start than that (eight goals, none conceded, two wins) really. The boys have worked incredibly hard over the last few weeks and I think we have seen that in all of the performances so far. “We’ve gone away from home and got a good win against Morecambe, to back up a strong opening performance versus Carlisle. It’s something that the whole group really wants to keep going and that we’re looking forward to the hard work so we keep doing it. “The lads that have come in have all got great attributes, and all work hard for positions in the team. Not one individual player’s position in the team is guaranteed, everyone has to work as hard as they can to keep their shirt on a game day. “It’s great to have that competition, because you can feel the other players pushing you harder each day.” The 26-year old wasted very little time getting himself off the mark and on the goal scoring trial for 2020/21. Hannant opened his account 18 minutes into the U’s clash with Carlisle two weeks ago, and he is relishing the opportunity to play a more deadly role for United this season.
I’VE ALREADY EQUALLED MY GOAL TALLY FOR LAST SEASON! I’M PROUD OF THAT “I’ve already equalled my goal tally for last season! I’m proud of that. It has been something that I have been looking to do, add my more goals and assists to my game. “I think with the additions we’ve made into the team, people like Joe (Ironside) and Diggers (Paul Digby), Wes too, it allows me to get forward a lot more than I was doing last season. I’ve found myself in a number of better positions to be on the end of chances and create goal scoring opportunities for the players around me. “At the back we’re performing really well as well, but by scoring more goals that already takes the pressure off of our defensive work. There’s no doubt in my mind, with the players we’ve got in the team, we’ll keep getting in plenty of goal scoring opportunities in all of our games.”■

FROM THE SLO ———— DAVE MATTHEW-JONES ———— Following this week’s additional Government restrictions concerning plans for supporters returning to watch live matches in England being withdrawn, this means fans across the EFL will have to watch their sides via ifollow. We know, it will never be the same as watching from the terraces in person, but it is now even more important to all clubs that we are using all the possible technologies available to us. I use a laptop and it is possible to sign in, buy a match pass and even extend it to watch on your television using a HDMI lead. I am aware through other SLO’s that there have been instances across the EFL, where supporters are having difficulties accessing the platform. So below I have tried to put together as clear a guide as possible. LOGGING ON AND BUYING A MATCH PASS 1. Visit the club website via this link www.cambridge-united.co.uk 2. See the iFollow dropdown link on the main navigation bar, at the top of the page. 3. Hover over the iFollow dropdown link 4. Click on subscribe 5. From there, enter your payment details and click ‘Pay’. 9. You will now be ready to watch the match on iFollow. A link will appear on match day to watch the game. HOW TO REDEEM AN IFOLLOW SEASON TICKET HOLDER PROMO CODE: Season Ticket Holders will be sent their codes via email in the lead up to each home match. If season ticket holders have not received their codes, please first check your junk/spam folders. If the codes are not appearing there either, please contact the ticket office via Twitter @cufc_to or ring 01223 566 500. www.cambridge-united.co.uk
Don’t please leave it until matchday. Even if you have an ifollow code to watch the match free you will have to enter your card details. The cost will show as £10, but then when the voucher code is entered and you click “Apply” the cost will be taken off the transaction. Steps to redeeming your code: 1. IS THERE AN OPPOSITE TO A BOGEY TEAM? WELL HARTLEPOOL WERE ONE SUCH FOR US. WE WERE UNBEATEN FOR 14 GAMES FROM 1970, THE RUN COMING TO AN END AT THE VICTORIA GROUND(AS WAS) ON A VERY DANK JANUARY AFTERNOON IN 1986 Last time round we delved down Cut Throat Lane for historic fixtures on that day. 26th September is probably a bit more interesting and living memory records show we have played nine competitive fixtures going back to 1959 when we entertained Trowbridge Town in the Southern Football League. And yes it was 0-0. Bit of a mixed bag overall, a 1-0 win v Worcester in 1964, 2-1 v the Shaymen in 1987 and who could forget our first non-league encounter v Luton Town in 2009, although I have tried to. Today we are concentrating, again, on our inaugural season in the Football League in 1970/71. Hartlepool United were the visitors, managed by a certain John Simpson who the following year joined the U’s as trainer/physio and oversaw two promotions in 1973 and 1977. The programme that day www.cambridge-united.co.uk
is linked below for your indulgence. Oh and we won by the way, 2-0 with goals from John McKinven and Ron Howell in front of a very healthy 5,225, our fourth league victory of that campaign. Neither McKinven nor Howell scored again for the U’s and by 1971 had moved on to pastures new. Is there an opposite to a bogey team? Well Hartlepool were one such for us. We were unbeaten for 14 games from 1970, the run coming to an end at the Victoria Ground(as was) on a very dank January afternoon in 1986. Which probably felt a lot danker come 5pm. Bye for now.

25 The share of the spoils made it two unbeaten for both sides. Newport County manager Michael Flynn was full of praise for his side after they overcame a stern Barrow side, 2-1 at Rodney Parade. His side opened the scoring on 19, when Liam Shephard converted a neat lay-off. Barrow hit back nine minutes later through captain Lewis Hardcastle, but couldn’t weather the Welsh outfit’s storm as Ryan Taylor drilled in just after the break to hand his team all three points. Tranmere Rovers will be eager to bounce back at the Abbey Stadium this matchday after convincingly falling to a 0-3 defeat at home to Cheltenham Town. The game was all over by half-time as Charlie Raglan and Andy Williams struck, before Paul Lewis struck the ball into his own net. Mike Jackson’s team have the solitary point to their name, whereas Michael Duff
praised his side’s ruthlessness after gaining their first win of the season. There was relief at Brunton Park last weekend, as Carlisle United made up for an unsatisfactory start to the season with a 2-0 win over struggling Southend United. Goals from strike partners Omari Patrick and Josh Kayode confined their opponents to another disappointing loss. Mark Yates has yet to witness his Crawley Town outfit lose at the Broadfield Stadium since he took charge in early December last year. He felt his men thoroughly deserved the continuation of that run after sinking Scunthorpe United 1-0. Tom Nichols, summer signing from Bristol Rovers, converted the only goal of the match on 15 minutes. The Iron’s boss Neil Cox saw the positives post-match, affirming that a first win is approaching. ■

Hot———— offAndrewthe Habbin Stephen ———— “Things do not happen. They are made to happen.” John. F. Kennedy. How good it is to be writing these notes for the programme without desperately hoping for an improvement! This season has barely begun but, already, the combination of Wes Hoolahan and Kyle Knoyle on one flank and Harrison Dunk and Luke Hannant on the other, is looking very potent. Cundy, May, Digby and Mullin have also been outstanding and, as Mark Johnson would say, now we can add El Mizouni to the mix. To win anywhere five nil away from home is a real statement. Beating Carlisle three nil at home, despite all their possession shows that we have forwards to be feared. I’ve been waiting a long time to say that! Mark Bonner has got the team playing for each other and those who weren’t really interested last season are no longer here. Cambridge fans are very tolerant but they won’t forgive a player who doesn’t try. We deserve better and I am sure that we won’t have much reason to be disgruntled this season. On the face of it, Tranmere are wasting their time turning up today! They were easily beaten last week and haven’t started at all well. We www.cambridge-united.co.uk
all know that football is never predictable. Rovers will want to put things right and will put in maximum effort. They are a fine club with great traditions. They have very knowledgeable supporters who have always made us feel very welcome in the pubs around Prenton Park, even if it is always bitterly cold up in the distant North! The pandemic continues to wreak havoc and it will be another iFollow Saturday. The Club have done well to make it free to season ticket holders who won’t want to miss the entertainment in prospect. This horrible time will pass. I only hope that we don’t see more long established clubs collapsing. The government and governing bodies must find ways of helping clubs, starved of income, to survive. It is hard to calculate the value of a football club to the community it serves. Preserving morale is more important now than it has been for a long time. Football can be a symbol of the return to normality and we must have a worthwhile normality to return to. The appointment of two new investors is an encouraging sign. The future is full of promise and our glorious traditions will be added to. Call me an optimist.■

CAMBRIDGE UNITED ———— COMMUNITY TRUST ————
UNITED’S SUMMER ACTIVATE SESSIONS MAKING A REAL IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY! As summer comes to a close, so does Cambridge United Community Trust’s ACTIVATE sessions. The Trust held nine sessions a week from the end of July to the beginning of September, in a hope to promote the physical and mental well-being of young people from the city of Cambridge after lockdown restrictions eased. The ACTIVATE programme engaged young people in (school) years 1-9, where they could participate for free in safe and fun football/ multi-sport sessions and also have the option to receive a free takeaway lunch after sessions finished. This was all made possible through the support of the Premier League Charitable Foundation. In total, over 150 young people engaged with the programme and there were over 350 total hours of activity! One parent
told CUCT what they thought, “the sessions were fantastic, amazingly run and [we were] just so grateful we were able to come. It made a huge difference to all of our mental health to have an organised activity to do. Thank you so much.” Almost half the participants at the sessions receive free school meals and more than 350 free healthy lunches over the course of the summer were handed out. Two-thirds of parents strongly agreed/agreed that the lunches helped their household finances in these difficult times. With the COVID-19 pandemic still at large, the Trust put in place significant measures to ensure the safety of all the young people attending the sessions. Upon arrival, all participants had their temperature checked CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V TRANMERE ROVERS

digitally and were required to sanitise their hands. Sessions were planned to build the confidence and self-esteem of the participants, therefore if any of the young people felt uncomfortable adjusting to the new regulations where contact during sessions was allowed, they were able to join a separate socially-distanced non-contact game with others instead. Many of the parents/carers would stay and watch as the sessions took place, and it was evident that they recognised how their children benefited both physically and mentally from the sessions during such unprecedented times. For example, one parent said that, “after being shut at home for months, it was great to have an activity to go to where my daughter could safely interact with other children her age and also be active as her other activities had been closed for months.” Indeed 90% of parents/ carers either strongly agreed or agreed that the participant felt more inspired and engaged after attending the sessions and 80% felt their son or daughter’s mental health has improved since coming back to sessions. Sam Squire is the Premier League Kicks Officer at Cambridge United Community Trust, and has hosted all of the ACTIVATE sessions since they began in July. The ex-Cambridge United player explained what it has meant to him hosting the sessions and the effect they have had on the participants. “It’s been a privilege to have led all of the www.cambridge-united.co.uk
ACTIVATE sessions,” Squire said. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being able to witness the participants gain confidence in themselves and in the word around them as each week has gone by. Now looking back, it feels like a journey.” Squire also stated: “I think the greatest benefit for the young people who participated in the ACTIVATE sessions has been being able to communicate face-to-face with other participants. Over the 6 weeks participants have been able to see their existing friends and gain new ones, all from exercising at a social distance! From speaking to the participants parents/carers this has had an incredibly positive effect on their mental health after being unable to have this form of interaction for so long during lockdown.” Although the ACTIVATE sessions have come to an end, Cambridge United Community Trust are still striving to make Cambridge a safer, stronger, more inclusive place. To carry on our mission we will be re-launching our Premier League Kicks (PL Kicks) sessions again very soon. Everyone loses when you step on the track
Cambridge United want our fans, families and friends to stay safe, so we are supporting the You Vs Train campaign. We are sharing the message that young people need to stay off the tracks. 8 young people have died in the last two years after trespassing on the railway. PLEASE don’t be next. Visit youvstrain.co.uk for more information and help us keep our fans safe.

EVERYONE KNOWS THEIR CLUB COLOURS... DON’T THEY? NORMAL VISION
Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It’s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you’re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours, and how that would affect your enjoyment of watching the game – either live or on TV. There are three types of colour blindness – and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth.
COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA)
The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people – whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at TheFA.com/colourblindness And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness.
Together, let’s make sure football’s future is FOR ALL.
