Fan noticeboard WELCOME What a fantastic week we have got ahead of us. Tonight we face a high-flying Wigan side who will be eager to continue their good form and march towards promotion, then on Saturday we host an equally ambitious Sunderland, for the first time since 2002. Our recent fixtures have seen the team play seven games from the past nine away from home. I’m not sure many teams across the EFL will face such a gruelling schedule across the course of the season but the way in which the team have handled the run has been mightily impressive. The last time we faced two big sides at the Abbey within a week was of course when we played Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday, and what great occasions they were. A point was gained back then, when arguably more was deserved, so I am sure you will see the best of the U’s over the course of these next two games. When the Abbey is full and fervent, there are few better atmospheres in the division so give it your all and the team will do the same. Tonight we welcome 8-year-old twins William and Oliver, who featured on The One Show to talk about their CUP26 Planet Super League heroics after a remarkable contribution to the club’s victory Make sure to give them a rousing reception when they are presented with the trophy! United in Endeavour.

MarkHeadBonner coach

Having played seven of our last nine games away from the Abbey Stadium, it feels good to not have to board the team coach to tonight’s game having clocked up some serious miles and time on the road over the past five weeks. To those of you who have travelled to the games, thank you for your super support in what will have taken a lot of time and cost a lot of money. We all appreciate that support greatly. Now though we return for a bumper crowds week with two of the title favourites in quick succession. The fixture throws up some strange patterns having faced Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday within a week in October. Both of those games were brilliant contests and great atmospheres. Here’s hoping for more of the same on and off the pitch. We know Wigan have started the season as expected. After some turbulent times, it appears they are now on a stable footing, well backed and have built a strong and experienced squad full of quality for this level and the one above. It is these games that create great challenges for us and they have to be embraced. We have delivered some excellent performances this season against some of the top teams and it is a challenge to keep repeating that - finding the consistency required to do so and having the ability and ruthlessness to take points from

games when we are in them. I thought the game at Rotherham on Saturday was a brilliant one. They did everything we knew they would and at times made it hard for us to deal with. Throughout though, we were always in the game, defended with real commitment and carried a constant threat with the ball. There were some excellent performances and on another day we would have made more of those attacks and opportunities to take something from the game. I spent some good time with Paul Warne and Ritchie Barker afterwards and enjoyed the conversation. There are some strange parallels between us and I was particularly interested discussing the challenges they faced last year having stepped up to the Championship and playing teams who dwarfed them in size, quality and resource. After this week’s league fixtures we have a week of Cup football to look forward to. Despite the number of games we are playing, we are ambitious and play to win. To be playing these additional games is a positive thing and we will do everything we can to keep progressing in both competitions. As the seasons are turning and temperatures dropping, these nights at the Abbey have the potential to be exciting occasions. I hope we can deliver a competitive and point scoring performance for us all tonight. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Ian Mather CEO Welcome to everyone who has made the journey from Wigan this evening. It’s 20 years since the teams last played each other at the Abbey, in the old Division 2. Fortunes have taken the clubs in different directions in the years since. The fact we are back playing each other again is testament to the strength of the unique pyramid of clubs in the UK. This pyramid will be in the spotlight this week with the publication of the Tracy Crouch Fan Led Review into football governance. For all supporters of all teams this review really matters. Make no mistake, this has the potential to revolutionise the way football is organised in this country and such a revolution is long overdue. The central issue to be addressed is how to make clubs sustainable in the long term. This calls for a fairer distribution of money that the game generates. You may have picked up the consistent calls from EFL Chairman, Rick Parry, for the abolition of parachute payments for teams relegated from the Premier League. I can do no better than offer you some quotes from Rick’s letter last week to Tracy Crouch: “We believe the introduction of a 75/25 split of pooled broadcasting revenues…in order to halve the existing gap between the top two divisions, will help stimulate rational financial behaviour in the Championship. As a result, there will be no need for parachute payments; no one ever needed a parachute to fall off a step!” “Parachute payments have risen from £30 million in 2010/11 (when they represented 5% of the aggregate turnover of EFL clubs) to £265 million in 2018/19, by which time they constituted 25% of our [EFL] income. An unacceptable cuckoo in the EFL nest.” This increase has led to reckless behaviour with many clubs spending more in player wages than their income. Alongside a fairer distribution of money there must be controls on clubs in what they can spend, in particular on player pay. So, watch out for the report and the political

reaction to it. It seems likely that this will carry a number of detailed proposals. These will need government to make them happen. In other news: Our staff have had some training from Alan Arber from The Offside Trust. It was a powerful talk about the need for vigilance in the way we safeguard young people. The Trust does great work in this area and we will be looking for ways we can support them. Sadly, in Rotherham, some of our fans were racially abused. It is desperately sad that such behaviour happens and I know Rotherham are conducting an investigation. It should go without saying that racist behaviour is not acceptable – anywhere – any time. If you witness any such behaviour at the Abbey, please report this to a steward ASAP. Back to the game – Wigan are promotion contenders. It will be a test – but that’s what we want. Do your part and be loud in your support. Enjoy the game. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Today’s visitors Wigan Athletic Nine years ago this week, Roberto Martinez’ Wigan side bounced back from a 3-0 defeat at Anfield, as to a trio of goals from Jordi Gomez sealed all three points over fellow relegation strugglers Reading in the Premier League. The Latics now prepare for a League One clash at the Abbey Stadium, having endured a decade of relegations, promotions and a European tour following FA Cup success against all odds in 2013. Despite recent woes, in which saw the Lancashire based side finish just a point clear of League One relegation last season, a newfound optimism has returned to the DW Stadium, following the successful takeover of UK-based company Phoenix 2021 Ltd. over the summer. There will certainly be an aim for new owners and fans alike at Wigan to one day compete with English football elite once more, but the

8

CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V WIGAN ATHLETIC

challenge of getting out of League One awaits first. The Latics, who saw their game at the weekend cancelled due to a Covid outbreak in the Oxford camp, head to the Abbey off the back of FA Cup First Round success, having eventually overcome a valiant Solihull Moors side after extra-time. Callum Lang’s 104th minute goal secured the victory after the two teams couldn’t be separated after the first two ties. 11 wins in their opening 16 League One games this season see Wigan sit just two points shy of top spot, and a win at the Abbey tonight could see them leapfrog Plymouth into first. The Latics’ at times unbreakable defence under Leam Richardson’s stewardship has been key as his side hunt for promotion to the Championship. At the other end, an

attacking arsenal that includes last season’s League One golden boot winner Charlie Wyke, as well as Will Keane, James McClean and academy graduate Callum Lang will strike fear into many League One defences this season. Max Power, who returned to the DW Stadium in the summer from Sunderland, has been an ever-present down the Latics’ right side this season, impressively contributing to five assists in League One – a stat that isn’t bettered by any player in the third tier – and a goal which came in Wigan’s 2-0 victory over Gillingham at the start of October. Last time out in League One, Leam Richardson’s side impressively came back from two-goals down against Fleetwood Town in the second half to secure a successive victory in the third tier, following their 2-0 win over Burton Albion at the end of October. A ten-minute Cod Army collapse, starting in the 60th minute, saw Callum Lang, Will Keane and Curtis Tilt all bag as the Latics eventually won 3-2 at Highbury. ■

From the SLO DAVE MATTHEW-JONES

This evening we welcome the supporters, officials and players of Wigan Athletic to the Abbey Stadium. The two sides first met in 1969 over two-legs and Cambridge United were representing the South and Wigan the North, to decide which was the top non-league club outside the Football League at the time. It finished 2-2 over the two matches with each of the teams winning away from home. The clubs were also rivals at the time to become the first one elected into the League. Cambridge United achieved this status in 1970 and Wigan later on in 1978. Since the start of the season, I have been working with Gina to organise the away travel coach and we have been able to organise a coach for every league match. We are not looking to make a profit from the service, but we are looking to run each trip at break-even throughout the season. At the moment we are almost there even with midweek trips to Plymouth and Morecambe being completed. I would like to thank the East Sussex U’s for their sponsorship to help towards the running of the coach. If you would like to help sponsor the coach, contact us via the details below.

I would also like to thank Tamzin and Tom for their assistance on Matchdays. They really have been brilliant at times, going far beyond what is expected of them, as have our coach suppliers, Greys of Ely. With the ever increasing petrol and travel costs, you may find that the Away Coach is the most cost-effective way to follow the side away from home. To book a seat, visit the CFU site, which currently has Cheltenham and Charlton available, with the Wycombe and Bolton matches to be added shortly. If you have any questions, contact 07591 111251 or email cfuawaytravel@yahoo.com If you prefer to book in-person, then go to the Programme exchange outside the Club Shop before or after a home match. This season we have reintroduced physical programmes and Matchday sales around the ground and to ensure we can cover all areas of the stadium, we need to have a dedicated team of programme sellers. If you would like to help with this, please contact me via dave. matthew-jones@cambridge-united.co.uk Please look after yourself and enjoy following the team home and away. Be Loud, Be Proud and Be United. Your support is so important. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Memories Down CUT THROAT LANE Evening campers and a warm welcome to one of the Latics teams from Lancashire. It has been a while since we last met, 5th March 2002 to be precise. The 4-1 thrashing we endured that day at what was then the JJB Stadium, was probably a decent portent of how life at CUFC was going to unfurl over the next three years or so. Enough of that misery. Let’s travel back to this day in 1996 when we entertained the O’s in an old Division Three fixture. An interesting programme and just £1.50 for 32 pages. All your old favourites are in there including “Memories” which no doubt could have been an inspiration for this feature. Roy Mac had just joined as manager after the Tommy Taylor affair and we have just scraped through against Welling in the FA Cup. The Orient squad line-up was interesting in those days. Scott McGleish, an old foe Carl Griffiths, Alvin Martin and Martin Ling. Anyway, we won 2-0 in front of 4,360 to keep up a good record against

the O’s which to this day shows us on 21 wins vs 14 in our favour since we first met in 1978. One final thing, and I can’t let this pass our very own Dave Matthew-Jones has a page in the programme. If that teaches you anything, then don’t get involved deeply with your football club if you want to preserve your looks and youth! Finally, on 23 November 1961 one Merv ‘the swerve’ Hughes was born in Victoria. As some of us cricket-lovers anticipate the start of the Ashes next month, Merv was a bit of a thorn in our side and infamous for taking the art of ‘mental disintegration’, aka sledging to a new level in his time. He took 212 Test wickets at an average of 28 before retiring in 1994 and now makes his money leading cricket tours for Aussies around the cricket world. Enjoy yourselves. ■

Hot OffAndrew the Habbin Stephen

“No man can ever rise above that which he aims.” A.A.Hodge Some clubs can quite easily be compared with ours. Wigan’s rise through the leagues, having dominated non-league football for a couple of years certainly parallels ours. Like us, a bumpy ride involves successes, relegations and achievements beyond the wildest dreams of the club’s fans. Unlike us however, Wigan had Dave Whelan who has put £100 million into the club, built a 25,000 all seater stadium, spent time in the Premier League and won a Cup Final at Wembley. With a rich backer, we might well have reached the top league when we were more than a match for most teams, but frightened of the investment which would have been needed to bring our stadium up to scratch, we will always wonder exactly why we never quite made it. Of course, the joy of football over the years is that fans can afford to dream big. Sometimes the dreams come true and that is the definition of real and fair competition - something we can only dream about now that the big clubs help to maintain their stranglehold over the rest of us. Of course, just about a year ago Wigan

went perilously close to going out of business as the previous owner plunged the club into administration. Sometimes teetering on the edge of oblivion results in a greater sense of togetherness and a clearer sense of purpose. A fans’ fund has been very successful, particularly since fans decide how their money is spent. Wigan are an example of a successful club who recognise the prime importance of the fans’ voice. They don’t just play at it and pay lip service to Fans’ Organisations like some clubs do. The best clubs achieve a unity of purpose between club, players and fans. Any break in that fusion can be fatal for the health of any club, however big or otherwise they are supposed to be. It will be a tough game but one thing our club can rely on is the backing of some of the best and most devoted fans to be found anywhere. As a slightly younger fan, I loved it when Cambridge United featured on The Big Match, courtesy of Anglia Television. Sometimes this programme showed lesser clubs like Colchester, Luton and Ipswich but it was always worth listening to the commentary of one Gerald Sinstadt who has just died at the age of 91. He had real insight, flair and a way of expressing things that was clear and uninfluenced by how famous a club might be. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Latest News United for Cambridge Sleepout taking place Friday 11th Feb 2022 Wintercomfort for the Homeless and Cambridge United Community Trust are once again joining forces to create their biggest and best sleepout event yet. In a bid to connect the entire community in support of homeless and vulnerable people in the City, the two charities are reaching out to groups and organisations to take part in a Cambridge-wide event. Teams from local businesses and United fans will be invited to sleepout on the terraces of The Abbey Stadium once again. Following the success of last year’s virtual sleepout, faith groups, community organisations, students and families will also be able to take part in their own secure community space by creating their own sleepout event. On the night itself, sleepout locations across the city will be able to take part in a programme of entertainment and live-link ups to keep everyone connected. Participants taking part at the Abbey are asked to fundraise at least £100. There is a £20 registration which pays for dinner and entertainment on the evening of the event. If you are part of an organisation or community group that would like to get involved in this fantastic event from your own community space, then please get in touch with melodybrooker@wintercomfort.org. uk to find out more. ■

Wilson Vale - Cambridge United’s Catering Partners - are looking to recruit enthusiastic Matchday staff to support its hospitality and tea bar services at the Abbey Stadium. Shifts will vary between 3 and 6 hours on a Matchday, depending on requirements at a rate of £10 p/h.

The rota and requirements are shared with the team in advance so you can select your shift and let us know when you are available. Duties will include serving food, operating the till and pouring drinks alongside a team of 25. To register interest, please email catering. cufc@wilsonvale.co.uk ■

Abbey moving Cashless

Supporters are to please note that the Abbey Stadium is moving to become a cashless stadium. Having received feedback this season with regards to queue times around the ground, the Club is taking the step to move cashless in-order to help reduce transaction times at its food and drink outlets inside the stadium. This move will be implemented ahead of Tuesday’s Emirates FA Cup replay against Northampton Town and applies to all catering outlets and hospitality. The Club Shop and Ticket Office will continue to accept cash. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Around the Division LEAGUE ONE ROUND-UP League One leaders Plymouth Argyle saw their 16-game unbeaten run conclude at the hands of on song Charlton Athletic in a 2-0 defeat at the Valley. Despite allowing the visitors to dominate the ball, the Addicks looked far more superior in the final third and eventually capitalised in the second half through Ben Purrington and Conor Washington. A setback for the Pilgrims – who rued the chance to go five points clear as their promotion rivals lurk in the shadows. Firing under caretaker boss Johnnie Jackson, a fourth win in five lifts the London outfit up to 12th. Rotherham United soared into the automatic promotion spots after edging out Cambridge United 3-1. A sweet Ben Wiles volley and a Dan Barlaser penalty raced the hosts into a half-time lead. The deficit was halved moments after the break when Sam Smith converted for the fourth consecutive game. Despite momentum being on the U’s side, the Millers punished ten minutes from time when Freddie Ladapo headed home to extend their unbeaten run to 11 matches. Tonight’s opponents Wigan Athletic had a weekend to recuperate after their proposed hosting of Oxford United was postponed owing to seven positive COVID-19 cases in Karl Robinson’s camp. Despite that, the Latics are just two points from the top of the pile with United, four unbeaten, a win shy of the top six. Wycombe Wanderers banished a six-game winless run in all competitions and helped maintain 4th position after a Sam Vokes header earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers. A return to winning ways on home soil ensures the Chairboys are one of three consolidated on 34 points. In the midst of a rut, the Trotters slip to 13th after recording the solitary win in seven. A second-half strike from in-form Max Watters’ proved the difference as MK Dons registered a third win on the spin as they dispatched Burton

22

CAMBRIDGE UNITED F.C. V WIGAN ATHLETIC

Albion 1-0. Liam Manning’s men maintain 5th, whereas four successive defeats for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s side means they languish in 15th despite a spirited display at Stadium MK. Finishes at the death from Luke O’Nien and Aiden McGeady, the side’s only shots on target, helped end Sunderland’s treacherous run as they snatched a 2-0 win over Ipswich Town. The Black Cats make up the final play-off spot and will be adamant the only way is up. That motto is a necessity for the Tractor Boys, who are in 10th and now seven points adrift of Lee Johnson’s side after a below-par start. A rampant opening to proceedings helped Sheffield Wednesday earn a 2-3 win over John Coleman’s Accrington Stanley. The Owls were three goals to the good after 22 minutes when Chey Dunkley, Theo Corbeanu and Florian Kamberi netted. A delightful Lewis Mansell overhead kick breathed life into Stanley, before substitute Joel Mumbongo fired home to ensure a shaky finish. Ultimately, the visitors remained firm to go eight unbeaten and up to a more respectable 7th, condemning the Lancashire side to 17th. Unbeaten in five, the tide seems to have turned for 9th placed Portsmouth - who secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback success over AFC Wimbledon. Ollie Palmer put the visitors into the ascendency from the spot, but Michael Jacobs restored parity for Pompey before Marcus Harness sparked delirium at Fratton Park with a 89th-minute winner. A bitter pill to swallow, the Dons stoop to 19th after three losses in a row. Cheltenham Town came from behind to defeat 10-man Shrewsbury Town 2-1 at Whaddon Road. The Shrews took an early lead through Daniel Udoh and were going for the jugular. That was until the game turned on its head 23 minutes in when Elliott Bennett received his marching orders, allowing Conor Thomas to blast home the equaliser from 12 yards. Kyle

Joseph came off the bench to net the winner just after the hour mark to send the Robins up to a respectable 11th and ensuring the visitors retain their place in the relegation zone. Doncaster Rovers and Lincoln City played out the only stalemate of the afternoon at the Keepmoat Stadium. A share of the spoils isn’t ideal for either side, rooting Richie Wellens’ men to 23rd and without a win in four. For the Imps, they’re 16th but will hope form of one loss in seven is a sign of fortunes changing. A tense Lancashire derby did not disappoint as Morecambe earned a last-gasp 1-2 win at Fleetwood Town. Callum Jones struck first blood with a sweet 10th minute strike for the Shrimps, but Callum Johnson headed home

with ten minutes left on the clock. Just when a point apiece looked destined, Cole Stockton grabbed his 12th of the campaign with a sublime strike from his own half to prevent a seventh game without maximum points. The sucker punch means the Cod Army are 22nd and occupy one win from their last ten. Relief for basement side Crewe Alexandra as they registered their first win in 11 with a 2-0 triumph over fellow strugglers Gillingham. A first-half finish from Chris Long put the Railwaymen into the driving seat - before Tommy Lowery sealed the contest in stoppage time. David Artell’s side are now five points from safety, which happens to be the Gills in 20th after a winless run of four. ■ Owen Mizon

The U’s succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at title challenging Rotherham United despite a fine effort from Mark Bonner’s men. CFU Corner Ben Phillips & Andrew Stephen Fixtures are coming thick and fast for Mark Bonner’s team at present and your terrific support both home and away has been incredible as always. The U’s last played a home fixture in the league almost a month ago. It was against AFC Wimbledon and was the club’s annual remembrance fixture and fundraise for the Poppy Appeal. Members of CFU are proud to have worked with the Royal British Legion Fulbourn and Teversham branch to organise the club’s tribute for remembrance.

It was great to see our fans getting involved and volunteering to help with the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal bucket collections around the stadium It was great to see our fans getting involved and volunteering to help with the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal bucket collections around the stadium. We would like to say a massive thank you to those who helped and we are pleased to announce that the fixture raised a brilliant £911.00. Thank you to both sets of fans for giving so generously on the day. CFU recently set up a scheme asking for fans to donate their old unwanted football kits and boots so they could be given to local charities to utilise. Thanks to the kind generosity of our supporters we have already being able to deliver football boots and kit to the YMCA hostel, allowing those less fortunate to be able to participate in playing football. If you would like to donate, please visit the CFU Caravan outside the Club Shop on Matchdays. The eagle eyed amongst you may have spotted the recent seat colour changes in the Main Stand D Block, which was paid for by the Cambridge United Lottery. The Lottery was

relaunched at our last home game to include a ‘Must Win Monday’ where £100 is won every week. The money raised from Lottery members is reinvested into the football club to help fund improvements for fans around the stadium in addition to helping fund initiatives within the local Abbey Ward area. The organisation has made significant contributions to the football club and the more fans that sign up to play, the more projects we can fund to help enhance the match day experience. If you fancy a flutter, then visit www.cufclottery.co.uk to find out more or to sign up to play. Finally, if you are after an ideal Christmas present or stocking filler, then look no further than the latest must-have publication on all things Cambridge United, ‘100 Things I love about Cambridge United’. The book includes memories and experiences of Abbey heroes and diehard fans and one hundred things that make this football club we all love so special. The book is available to pre-order now for 14.99 on the club shop website and there will be a special launch of the book on the 18th December at the home fixture against Rotherham, when some of the U’s legends who feature in the book will be helping the author Russ Greaves promote his book. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

A BIG SEASON IN STORE VISIT THE NEW CAMBRIDGE UNITED STORE AT GRAND ARCADE

CAMBRIDGE CITY CENTRE, CB2 3BJ | GRANDARCADE.CO.UK |

View from the Press Box Doug Shulman Saturday’s trip to Rotherham marked a seventh away game in nine matches for the U’s, with over 1,550 miles of road having been eaten up since the fixture at Shrewsbury on 23 October. Therefore, being back on home soil tonight for the visit of Wigan, will be something of a relief, both for players, coaching staff and, of course, the ever-faithful supporters. There can be no doubting that away trips pose a different challenge in many respects, but one that Mark Bonner’s men certainly embrace. As well as the game itself - this year often in bigger more imposing stadiums following promotion - the travel can take its toll. Long hours sat on the coach, regular overnight stays away from family in unfamiliar surroundings, all of which likely tax the mind and absorb physical and mental energy.

“There can be no doubting that away trips pose a different challenge in many respects, but one that Mark Bonner’s men certainly embrace” For supporters too, there are many hours on the road, always at a financial cost, but they would not have it any other way. Those days spent on the A14, A1, M6 and M25 are easily counterbalanced by the special times that an away day can bring, with the amber army enjoying some memorable matches and moments already this season. The win at Portsmouth, Joe Ironside’s late leveller at top-of-the-table Plymouth, the added time equaliser from Adam May at Crewe, Jack Iredale’s rocket at Shrewsbury and Ben Worman’s outrageously volleyed opener in the three-point haul at Morecambe. The recent run of away fixtures has also coincided with some challenges of our own

at BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. My esteemed colleague Mark Johnson endured a 4-game spell on the sidelines, triggering a re-jig of personnel and some long trips on my tod. Throwing some technical problems on to the pile too, left us with a veritable cocktail of issues to hurdle but, thankfully, none that beat us and, hopefully for the listeners, not too much interruption to the usual service! Wigan arrive at the Abbey this evening hunting down an automatic promotion spot, as were Rotherham, likewise MK Dons the Saturday prior, ditto Sunderland this coming weekend. The exciting prospect of facing illustrious opponents at this level for the first time in many years, though, was surely a strong motivation for last season’s promotion from League Two. Sitting mid-table with 18 games having been played, I think is a more than decent return, given the transition in league status and some of the bumps in the road that have had to be navigated. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

Academy Schoolboy Academy Update

It has been an exciting and busy period for the clubs U9-U14 age groups over the past few weeks. Since we last appeared in the Matchday Programme, we have continued to diversify our games programme by playing different clubs up and down the country including halfterm trips to Doncaster Rovers for a tri-festival against opposition clubs such as Birmingham City, Sunderland and Doncaster. After the games our U13s age group attended the First Team fixture at the Keepmoat Stadium and

were met with a pre-match team talk from First Team Manager Mark Bonner before cheering on the U’s in the away end for the 1-1 draw. Whilst we celebrate on the pitch success, we would also like to shine a light on some really positive success stories off the field in recent weeks. Congratulations to Harry Fell, who has been selected and represented England Hockey at U15s and also to Tomi Olidaran, who was awarded a Head of Year certificate this term for hard work, spreading kindness and representing the school to such a high standard. In addition to this, he was part of the U13 Table Tennis District team who won the recent district championship. It has also been an exciting period for coaching development as we hosted an exclusive event for the Academy partner clubs, which was hosted and delivered by Mark Bonner and Jake Hammond. The discussion included a big emphasis on coaching education and featured fascinating interest from the First Team Head Coach. Please follow us on Twitter at @CUFCacademy1 for Academy updates, such as tournaments, festivals and success stories. ■ www.cambridge-united.co.uk

Community Trust UPDATE

CAMBRIDGE UNITED AWARDED THE INAUGURAL CUP26 TROPHY AT THE COP26 CLIMATE SUMMIT IN GLASGOW

Back in August, Cambridge United Community Trust’s Education and Skills Manager Ash Dyer signed Cambridge United up for the Planet Super League’s CUP26, a competition in association with COP26 that encourages fans and members of the local community to score goals for Cambridge United by completing environmentally friendly activities. Our opponents - 48 other pro clubs, including 13 from the Premier League! After weeks of feverish competition up and down the UK between those clubs, Cambridge United earned a hard fought victory over eight other finalists to become the inaugural CUP26 champions, winning football’s biggest-ever climate tournament as the COP26 climate summit got into full swing. The U’s performed outrageously well - pipping Lincoln City in a classic semi-final, before romping to victory against eight other finalists, including Arsenal, Fulham, Spurs and Aston Villa. Even Northampton Town, the traditional powerhouse of climate action in Planet Super League couldn’t match the Cambridge fans this time. And not only did Cambridge United take the coveted Planet Super League trophy, our fans also won the Impact Award for having the

34

greatest impact during CUP26. That’s an area of forest in DR Congo the size of 1,000 football pitches is now preserved in Cambridge United’s name. On hand to present the CUP26 trophy at the Cop26 Conference in Glasgow was ex England player and Tottenham Hotspur legend Ledley King, alongside Allegra Stratton, the Prime Ministers’ Spokesperson to COP26. CUP26 was powered by Planet Super League, who engage families to take action against climate change through football, and Count Us In, a global movement of people taking practical steps to protect what they love from climate change. Since the tournament’s launch in early September, more than 27,500 goals have been registered and verified, accounting for over 14,300 climate actions. This has reduced carbon emissions by 113,000 kg and equates to planting 6,450 trees. Cambridge United CEO Ian Mather said, “We are delighted to win the CUP26 competition but the real winner here was the planet. Through the power of football we encouraged schools, staff, fans and the local community involved and we raised awareness of what everyone can do to combat climate change. “Alongside football clubs across the UK we engage with our communities in a range of ways, including disability sport and mental health activities, which make a real difference

to the lives of so many people. “It is this connectivity to the community that makes the UK football pyramid of clubs such a valuable asset and we are delighted to have used this power for such for important cause.” Allegra Stratton, Prime Minister’s spokesperson to COP26, said, “It has been wonderful to witness how many children, schools and communities have taken green action as part of the CUP26 tournament. They’ve reduced their own carbon footprint and shown they want to see climate action at COP26, which we are working hard to achieve. Football has an incredibly important role in helping to tackle climate change and it’s exciting to see so many clubs mobilising their fans.” Tom Gribbin, CEO Planet Super League, said, “This is the first time football has come together at this scale for climate change and we are delighted by the huge impact that CUP26 has had. There have been so many exciting moments during the tournament, and today is the time to recognise the energy, enthusiasm, and impact of football fans around the UK. And this is only the beginning: we’ll be doing a lot more next year to inspire everyday football fans to do their bit.” Cambridge United scored an incredible 4259 goals in the final – an incredible feat. Some of our superstar performers in the final were 8-year-old twins William and Oliver, who featured on The One Show to talk about their CUP26 heroics with Alex Scott and Jermaine Jenas. U’s super-fans Oliver and Charlie Stackhouse also found themselves in the spotlight, sharing their contribution on BBC

Radio Cambridgeshire. Season ticket holders the Pope family also put in a heroic effort to contribute over 200 goals in the final week as a collective! Speaking at COP26 after the winners’ announcement, Ash Dyer said “I am incredibly proud of our fans, our schools, our community and our families associated with Cambridge United. We are fortunate at the moment to have a team on the pitch that is on the up, but to involve the whole club, the whole fan base and the whole community in something that they can directly contribute towards winning is just fantastic! “Sport gives the opportunity to thrive to absolutely everyone, without exception, and I want this to be a really great example to help you all understand how powerful sport can be for creating better futures and inspiring and empowering our young people to protect our planet!” The CUP26 trophy will be presented to the club by William and Oliver at half time on the pitch tonight so let’s all celebrate this marvellous piece of silverware for the trophy cabinet. ■
