A WELCOME FROM

EDDIE HEARN

I

’m delighted to begin our gamechanging partnership with the leading global sports streaming platform DAZN with another sizzling summer of Fight Camp action from our stunning HQ here in Brentwood, Essex. Last year’s line-up had it all – and this year’s series is set to be even bigger and better with addition of fans. I can’t begin to tell you how good it feels to welcome crowds back! Pushing the boundaries is something we will always continue to do, and we needed a partner that shared our vision for boxing, and who was also willing to make the investment to make those dreams a reality. As we continue Matchroom’s expansion worldwide, this new deal will enable us to further cement DAZN as THE unrivalled global home of boxing. I couldn’t be prouder of the exciting new on-air talent roster that we have assembled for our ground-breaking project. It’s a real mixture of industry legends and fresh new talent that will give us the credibility and the energy to drive this new era forward. This stellar line-up of broadcasters underlines our commitment to bringing in a new era of global boxing, providing fans with the very best experience.

It’s important for us to kick off this new DAZN relationship with three stacked cards, back-to-back, and at £1.99 a month in the UK it is incredible value for money. This is our opportunity to say, ‘welcome to DAZN’, and tell fans this is what we are bringing you. Week 1 is a brilliant card from top to bottom and has a little bit of everything. At the top of the bill Leigh Wood attempts to emulate Carl Froch by becoming Nottingham’s second ever World Champion when he takes on China’s volume punching WBA Featherweight king Xu Can. Tommy McCarthy against Chris BillamSmith for the European, British and Commonwealth Cruiserweight Titles has the potential to steal the show – both men are knocking on the door for a World Title opportunity and there’s been a spicy build-up with both men trading verbal blows. Jack Cullen has a golden opportunity against former Canelo foe Avni Yildirim; Anthony Fowler faces late stand in Rico Mueller; Campbell Hatton continues his young pro journey and former amateur star Sandy Ryan makes her professional debut. Sit back and enjoy the show! ■

MONSTER W

BA Featherweight World champion Xu Can finally gets back in the ring tonight to defend his Title against Leigh Wood – and the Beijing man is planning to make a big bang in his first pro fight on UK soil. Can (18-2 3 KOs) had been lined up to meet Josh Warrington in a mouth-watering clash last summer, but COVID-19 put paid to that blockbuster night in the Leeds man’s hometown. Warrington then suffered a shock defeat to Mauricio Lara behind closed doors in London in February in his first pro defeat and will rematch the Mexican in Yorkshire in September, further delaying any potential clash with Can. The 27-year-old has not boxed since defending his title against Manny Robles III in California in 2019, shutting out the American with his trademark volume-punching too much to handle, and now the ‘Monster’ finally gets back in the ring after over 600 days without a fight, eager to show the British fans what he would bring to the table against ‘The Leeds Warrior’. “The recess is finally over,” said Can. “Over 600 days without a fight is indeed tormenting. Instead of whining and complaining, I put more efforts into training. Training made me stronger. “Whatever opponents I have to fight and wherever I need to be, my goal is always the same - that is to bring the belt back to China. Now that the Briton wouldn’t dare to leave his home, I will come knocking on his door.” Nottingham-man Wood (24-2 14 KOs) has been happy to answer the door to Can, as he prepares to fight in his first World Title bout. The 32-year-old picked up the vacant British Title in February with a stoppage win over Reece Mould in London, and

“I MUST TREAT HIM VERY SERIOUSLY” ‘Leigh-thal’, trained by Ben Davison, has been bullish in the build-up, believing Can’s promoters Golden Boy have made a mistake in picking him. Can has declared that he’s not overlooking Wood though, and with the great Pedro Diaz training him in Miami, the champion has left no stone unturned in his camp in the Florida sunshine, and vows to put on a clinic and make a big entrance in the unique Fight Camp setting in Essex in every sense. “Leigh is a clever opponent,” said Can. “I must treat him very seriously. I have gained a lot of experience in my previous World Title fights and I am 100 per cent confident that I will defend my Title again regardless of all the obstacles ahead. “I’m totally concentrated in this fight only. The moment I step inside the ring, the only thing I will think about is how to beat the guy in the other corner, nothing else. “I have a brand-new ring-walk robe which is designed by my sponsor 361. I will make a grand entrance in the UK.” ■

eigh Wood believes that Xu Can’s promoter Golden Boy have made a mistake by choosing him as their WBA Featherweight World Champion’s latest defence. Wood (24-2, 14 KOs), who is trained by Ben Davison alongside Undisputed Super-Lightweight World Champion Josh Taylor, landed the vacant British Featherweight Title last time out at The SSE Arena, Wembley in February by stopping previously unbeaten Doncaster fighter Reece Mould with a brutal knockout in the ninth round. Can (18-2, 3 KOs), who is recognised by The Ring Magazine as the No.3 Featherweight in the world, won China’s first ever WBA World Title when he defeated Puerto Rico’s defending Champion Jesus Rojas with a unanimous decision at the Toyota Center, Houston, in January 2019. ‘Monster’ hasn’t boxed since he defended his World Title against Manny Robles III at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, way back in November 2019. Nottingham’s Wood believes that he possesses the power to ask Can serious questions as he aims to emulate Carl Froch by becoming the city’s second World Champion. “When opportunity knocks you’ve got to be ready,” said Wood. “I’m always in the gym all year round keeping fit, staying on it and living the life. This opportunity has come up and I’ve grabbed it with both hands. “I’m coming to win. I’m not just coming to fight for a World Title. I don’t want to be remembered as the kid that boxed for a World Title. I want to win the World Title. People can congratulate me on this fight after I win. “I’ve proved that I’m way above domestic level and that my power is too much for these kids. It is a big jump from domestic level to World Title level but I’m confident in my

7

“I’M GOING TO RISE TO THE CHALLENGE” ability and I’m confident in my power. “Xu Can’s best attribute is his punch volume. He throws a lot of punches. He doesn’t take a good shot. When he gets clipped his head is all over the shop. He’s not boxed anyone that can dig like I can – in my opinion. I’m going to be giving him questions that he’s not answered before. I’m bringing a lot more than what he’s seen before. “At the same time, he’s going to be doing the same to me. He’s going to be throwing a lot of shots at my head. I’m going to have to be smart and super fit. I’m excited about it and I’m going to rise to the challenge. I’m extremely confident. “Ben (Davison) doesn’t get it wrong. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him get it wrong. You have to take away a fighter’s best attributes. Can’s best attribute is his volume. I think he’s got the record for the most punches thrown in 12 rounds. We have to take that away from him. “I’m going to go out there and stick to the game plan, and I believe I’ll get the job done. I’m surprised that him and his team Golden Boy have specifically asked for me. Be careful what you wish for. They’ve made a mistake picking me.” ■

MAC

ATTACK

T

ommy McCarthy vows to punish Chris Billam-Smith for calling him out and is targeting World Title action as the Brit duo battle for the European, Commonwealth and vacant British Cruiserweight Titles. McCarthy (18-2 9 KOs) puts his European strap on the line for the second time having landed the vacant belt in a tight showdown with Belgium’s Bilal Laggoune via majority decision in October in London and then stopping Alexandru Jur in six rounds in his first defence in Manchester in May. The 30-year-old is champing at the bit to make the transition from European honours to World, but in order to do so, he must see off domestic rival Billam-Smith first. The Bournemouth man puts his Commonwealth Title on the line for the second time and overcame a bruising encounter with Vasil Ducar in March to tee up this mouth-watering domestic dust-up, and the Belfast banger is eager to silence ‘The Gentleman’ on his path to bigger prizes. “Billam Smith has being calling me out for over a year,” said McCarthy. “I never met him until the launch press conference, he’s annoying the life out of me. “Obviously when you’re a champion everyone calls you out, but I was ignoring it until he sent a tweet saying I’d no balls, or he’d punch holes in me – if someone came up to you saying that you’re going to get a reaction. “I’m booming with confidence, my sparring been top notch and training is going good,” he continues. “There’s more pressure on him than me, he asked for this fight - he called me out now he has to back it up. “It’s a massive opportunity for me. I’ve always dreamed about becoming a global star and this new deal Eddie has with DAZN gives me that chance. It was always the case that every fighter wanted to be on Sky but now everything has

11

gone to a new level with this DAZN deal. “Everything seems to be falling into place with my career. Carl Frampton has always said that I should be fighting in America because they would love me — a big black man with a broad Belfast accent. I don’t think the Americans even realise there are black people in Ireland!” McCarthy is following the footsteps of ‘The Jackal’ on his journey to World honours, and in doing so, he’ll be promoting the pride he has in his multicultural background. “I don’t want to shy away from it,” said McCarthy. “A lot of the kids I’ve met growing up over the years who are mixed race didn’t know who their fathers were. They had Irish mothers and black fathers, so they didn’t know the black side. I’m generalising here, obviously, but even their families would be ashamed. “A couple of people I spoke to said that their aunts and uncles and everybody in the family hated them because they were ashamed. I was different because my mother was black and my father was Irish. And where I lived in Belfast, everybody knew who my father was so everybody knew me. All my Irish family loved me so much. They took so much pride and put me on a pedestal. I grew up with loads of love.” ■

THE

GENTLEMAN

C

hris Billam-Smith has predicted that he will “take out” Tommy McCarthy “in the mid to late rounds” when the Cruiserweight rivals collide for the European, British and Commonwealth Titles. ‘The Gentleman’ used the power of social media to help secure a shot at the European and British Titles when he sent the following Tweet to McCarthy on May 12: “Stop trying to avoid me. I’d punch holes in you. Don’t bottle it”. Just more than a month later, the pair went face to face with their bout confirmed for July 31. Billam-Smith was made to work as he dropped the Czech Republic’s Vasil Ducar twice during a hardfought points victory that saw him claim the vacant WBA Continental Cruiserweight Title and progress to 12-1 (10 KOs) at The SSE Arena, Wembley in March. The former Poole ABC man, who blasted out Nathan Thorley in two rounds last year at Fight Camp, believes he will eventually wear down McCarthy to deliver another stoppage triumph as he continues to build towards a World Title shot under the guidance of trainer Shane McGuigan. “We were calling out Tommy McCarthy after my fight at Fight Camp last year,” said Billam-Smith. “I was getting interviewed after that and we were talking about it. It’s been a year in the making. Obviously with Tommy boxing on Matchroom shows and myself wanting bigger Titles and him picking up the European – it was a fight that made sense. I believe it’s a really fan-friendly fight and a great one for my career. I’ve been asking for it for a while and we’ve finally got it. “I’ve seen Tommy and I’ve watched him for a few years now. He’s a very decent fighter. He’s got quick

hands and a very good boxing IQ. It’s an exciting challenge for me. Winning the European Title will be a massive achievement for me and it’s one that I’m really looking forward to, but also, it’s a step that you plan to make on the journey. “You can’t take too much from his last fight. He did exactly what he had to do. He boxed well, he hurt him to the body, but unfortunately there wasn’t much coming back so there’s not much you can really take from that win. “I sent that one Tweet out which got a lot of traction, a lot more than I expected to be honest. I’m just glad he took the fight and it’s got him right up for the fight which is great to see. That’s what fans want to see. They want to see two domestic fighters going at it, and in the press conferences as well. “It looks like I’ve riled him up a bit so he’s going to be fired up for this fight. He’s going to be training very hard. I expect a very good performance from him. The fight will definitely catch fire. Every fighter wants to win with a knockout and I think this is a really good opportunity for me to put all of my skillset to work. I can box, I can break him down and I believe that I will take him out in the mid to late rounds.” ■

HURRICANE

HATTON

T

he exciting professional journey of Campbell Hatton continues tonight at Matchroom HQ as he looks to secure his third victory since making his debut in the paid ranks in March of this year when he clashes with Jakub Laskowski in his toughest test yet. With the eyes of the boxing world and all the pressures that accompany the Hatton name on his shoulders, ‘Hurricane’ battled past a tough Jesus Ruiz in Gibraltar on the undercard of Dillian Whyte’s epic Heavyweight rematch with Alexander Povetkin and was honest in his post-fight analysis that perhaps the occasion and an eagerness to impress hadn’t allowed him to fully showcase his talents. Two months later but once again on the biggest of stages, the 20-yearold delivered a more composed and disciplined performance against former sparring partner Levi Dunn, earning a shutout 40-36 victory over the four rounds in his home city of Manchester in an arena which holds many special memories for the Hatton family. As he continues his daily development with trainer and uncle Matthew, Hatton is confident that tonight’s showing will be his best yet and the Manchester City fanatic is relishing the experience of boxing on the second instalment of Matchroom’s Fight Camp series. “It’s pretty surreal to be fighting here at Fight Camp, I really enjoyed watching it last year and it was such a big event,” said Hatton. “To be a part of it this year is great and I’m buzzing. “I didn’t feel like I was nervous for my first fight until I had my second fight and I could compare the two.

16

JULY 31 2021 | WEEK 1 FIGHT CAMP

“I’M IMPROVING ALL THE TIME” It was night and day! Each time as I move forward there will be less and less nerves and I will keep improving. “It was a dream come true to box in Manchester this year. It was always something I wanted to do having grown up watching my Dad and Anthony Crolla box there in big nights for as long as I can remember. It was a shame there was no fans there, but the experience was still very special. “It’s great to have the fans back in arenas, there was some top fights in the behind closed doors era and the atmosphere here at Fight Camp will be rocking. “As I say, I was far less nervous for my second fight and I was happier with my performance, but it still wasn’t my best. I am improving all the time in the gym and I will showcase that in this fight, I can’t wait!” ■

THE

DADDY

nthony Fowler returns to Fight Camp this summer with the aim to emulate his emphatic victory over Adam Harper at Matchroom HQ last August with an even more impressive performance against Germany’s Rico Mueller. ‘The Machine’ was scheduled to face the durable and experienced Roberto Garcia before the Mexican American was forced out through a bicep injury. Mueller (28-3-1, 19 KO’s), a former IBO World Title Challenger, arrives in the UK highly motivated for his first fight on British shores, looking to make it four wins on the spin and cause a seismic shock by derailing Fowler’s current run of success. The 33-year-old promises to be a tough test for the Liverpudlian having took hard-hitting Argentinian Jeremias Ponce the distance in 2019, and Mueller has been stopped just once in his three defeats back in 2016 by Jeff Horn, so a victory inside the distance for Fowler would be another big statement. “I was gutted about Garcia being forced out,” said new dad Fowler. “It would have been a tough, hard fight! I wanted to be the first person to stop him, but it is what it is. I’ve got a solid and worthy opponent in Rico Mueller. He’s come forward and aggressive just like Roberto so it should make for an exciting fight. “It’s great to be back at Fight Camp as well, to be here again and to have the fans makes it even better. Making his fourth outing under trainer Shane McGuigan, the 30-year-old Liverpool fan says the

“MUELLER IS AGGRESSIVE, IT’LL MAKE FOR AN EXCITING FIGHT!” improvements are there for all to see as he looks to get past Mueller and continue to impose himself on the thriving 154lbs division. “I’ve really settled in with Shane and that is showing in my performances. Last summer against Adam Harper I was between styles a little bit but as you saw against Jorge Fortea last time out, I put on a clean and disciplined performance. Fortea was a good fighter but I got him out of there in three rounds, I’m going in the right direction. “I am after all the big domestic names like James Metcalf and Ted Cheeseman, but they didn’t come off. I need tough fights and rounds at this stage of my career as I look to progress through the levels. “The fans want to see me stepped up and I want to be stepped up! The big fights are coming. I want to use my technique and my skills to box the fight my way, that’s the goal in this fight. “People have been talking about the likes of Liam Smith next which would be a massive fight in Liverpool. I’m on my way up and Liam is coming off a loss, so who knows, we could meet down the line!” ■

THE JOURNEY

BEGINS

F

ormer amateur star Sandy Ryan steps into the ring for the first time as a professional tonight promising to make a big statement on her introduction to the paid ranks by becoming the first person to stop Kirstie Bavington. The 27-year-old Derby boxer, who claimed gold at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and silver at the 2014 World Championships, had been one of Team GB’s leading medal hopes for the rescheduled Tokyo Games before deciding to turn professional with STN Sports in March. Following a glittering amateur career, Ryan will start life in the pro ranks campaigning at SuperLightweight with trainer Clifton Mitchell, and the Midlands talent is ready to target World Titles with an ultimate ambition of fighting at the home of her beloved Derby County Football Club. “To be successful and one of the best female fighters in the world is my goal,” said Ryan. “I’ve got the right team around me and I believe I can achieve that. I was going to turn pro after the Olympics but when they were postponed, I took the decision to turn over. I feel like it’s the right time and I’m ready to go all the way. “I was on the GB squad for nine years. I went to every major tournament besides the Olympic Games. I went to the World Championships and won a silver medal, European Bronze, European Games Bronze and Commonwealth Games Gold medal. All this experience will help me massively in the pro game. “Each day that passes I get more and more excited. I can’t wait for my debut, every day I visualise my ring walk, getting in the ring and smoking the girl.

“I’M READY TO GO ALL THE WAY” “I said to my manager, ‘I don’t want a walkover, get me a good opponent’, and they delivered with Kirstie. I looked on YouTube and watched a few of her fights, she seems game and she’s coming to win which is exactly what I want. I didn’t want to do a four rounder in my first fight so I’m going straight into six rounds. “I’ve done this for many years, but the pro game is very different. Every fight and camp I will learn and develop, and the journey is only just beginning. I want to be up there, in years to come when people talk about women’s boxing, I want my name in the same bracket as Katie Taylor. “I have massive dreams to fight for a World Title at Pride Park, the home of Derby County FC. First things first I want to make a big statement at Fight Camp. The girl has never been stopped before so let’s see!” ■

vni Yildirim has brushed off his defeat at the hands of pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez and is ready to launch his quest at a new weight when he takes on Jack Cullen. Yildirim (21-3 12 KOs) took on Canelo in Miami in February, challenging the Mexican star for the WBC and WBA World Super-Middleweight Titles at the home of the Miami Dolphins, but the Turk was unable to dethrone the champion and was pulled out after the third round by then-trainer Joel Diaz. The 29-year-old previously challenged Anthony Dirrell for the vacant WBC strap in February 2019, losing via a controversial split decision in Minneapolis, and now Yildirim has chosen to drop down to 164lbs in a catchweight clash with Cullen and to also team up with a new coach in Pedro Diaz. “The Canelo fight is old news,” said Yildirim. “I am looking to open a new page on my career down at Middleweight. I have a new trainer in Pedro Diaz, it’s a new start and I have a new lease of life, everything feels good.” Diaz is one of the world’s finest trainers, having worked with the vaunted Cuban teams in four Olympics and guiding the Dominican Republic in another, before switching to the pro game and working in the corners of modern greats like Miguel Cotto and Guillermo Rigondeaux, and Yildirim will be looking to absorb his years of experience in this new chapter. Yildirim’s first assignment under Diaz sees him take on ‘Little Lever’s Meat Cleaver’ over ten rounds at the second instalment of Matchroom’s Fight Camp in Brentwood, Essex.

23

“THE CANELO FIGHT IS OLD NEWS” Cullen fights for the second time in the unique setting having drawn with Zak Chelli last summer and added a fine win over John Docherty to his CV in November. A clash with Yildirim came out of leftfield for both men and has been well received by pundits, but Yildirim is not focusing on his British foe, but looking to make a statement in the Middleweight division and warn the belt-holders that he is gunning for their hardware. “I’m in a new gym, new atmosphere,” said Yildirim. “Pedro is one of the best trainers in the world and a great guy, and I think that he can make me a World Champion at 160lbs, and I’m telling the champions - I am coming for you. “I know what I want to be, a great champion at Middleweight, and Pedro believes in me and says that I can do it. My motivation is so high, and my body and my mind are both in a great place.” ■

ack Cullen says he will take full advantage of a golden opportunity when he clashes with former World Title challenger Avni Yildirim for the IBF International Super-Middleweight Title. After a fiery build up in the Matchroom bubble, Cullen recovered from a first round knockdown to hand undefeated prospect John Docherty a first career loss in their British Super-Middleweight Title Eliminator last time out in November at The SSE Arena, Wembley Turkish star Yildirim (21-3, 12 KOs) heads into battle on the back of an unsuccessful challenge against pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez in February at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Mexican icon Canelo was too good as he defended his WBC and WBA Super-Middleweight World Titles via a third-round stoppage. “John Docherty got the fight going at the end of the day – he started with his mouth and it made more people tune in,” said Cullen. “This is what boxing is all about, it’s all about having exciting fights. It was a good fight and I came home with the win. I was expecting to. I don’t want to take anything away from John Docherty – he’s a good boxer but I’m bigger and better. “I don’t feel like I’m an underdog in this one. If anything, I’m the favourite! He has been in with the best. You’ll see on fight night that I should be up there as well. You can’t really go off Canelo, he’s a superstar isn’t he. Whoever he fights he beats. All I can take away from it is Yildirim is a tough and strong lad. “He comes for a fight. It can only be an exciting scrap. Everyone knows I enjoy getting involved in a fight. He enjoys a fight too. No matter what time it is in the ring, whatever round it is, we’re going to clash. It’s going to be

26

JULY 31 2021 | WEEK 1 FIGHT CAMP

“YOU’LL SEE MY HAND GETTING RAISED AT THE END OF THE NIGHT” a brilliant fight for the crowd and for those watching on DAZN. “At the end of the day he’s a fighting man and he doesn’t want to get beat. Anybody that gets into the ring doesn’t want to get beat. He’s going to give it his all and I’m going to give it my all. You don’t look past anybody, and Yildirim shouldn’t be looking past me. We’ll prove to everyone how good I am. You’ll see my hand getting raised at the end of the night. “This is going to be a dream come true for me hopefully. You never know, anything could happen after this. It’s entirely up to Matchroom and DAZN. Get past Yildirim and it puts me right up there. I think he’s ranked at number 21 or 22 in the world. There’s no reason not to be putting me up there. “You couldn’t be fighting in a better place than Eddie Hearn’s back garden. I got 25 tickets and I’ve sold them all. Especially with a crowd this time, it’s going to be mega. I love all of the people who come and support me. They all put their hard-earned money into coming to watch me. It’s the same this time. They’ve all spent big money on the tickets. Crowds definitely help a fighter.” ■
