A WELCOME FROM

EDDIE HEARN T

his is the UK curtain closer for a difficult 2020, but it doesn’t get any bigger; The Unified World Heavyweight Championship between Anthony Joshua and his Mandatory Challenger Kubrat Pulev. We know first-hand just how difficult it has been to stage major sporting events this year, that’s why I am so delighted that we will be the first boxing event to welcome back spectators, with 1,000 lucky fans joining us in the arena tonight. I can’t tell you how happy I am to see fans returning to our events. Whilst the team have done an incredible job over the last 10 months, we live and breathe through the energy and atmosphere that a live crowd generates. Big thanks have to go to Anthony Joshua and Kubrat Pulev. They stayed patient and they stayed ready, and they’re here because they want to fight. They didn’t want to wait around any longer, they know we’re in a pandemic and they still wanted to put it all on the line.

I want to thank the two teams at Matchroom and 258 MGT. This has been a really difficult exercise for us over the last few weeks in here at the Matchroom Wembley Residency, and also at Fight Camp in the summer. The team have done a great job and worked tirelessly to make sure that we keep the momentum of boxing moving, and there’s no bigger momentum than being able to stage the World Heavyweight Championship. We have an excellent undercard leading up to the big one; Lawrence Okolie has one last hurdle in the shape of Nikodem Jezewski to overcome before he lands his first World Title shot, Martin Bakole vs. Sergey Kuzmin threatens to steal the show, Hughie Fury has to look impressive against Polish veteran Mariusz Wach, Macaulay McGowan steps in to face Kieron Conway, Albanian Welterweight sensation Florian Marku faces Jamie Stewart on his Matchroom debut and Qais Ashfaq looks to bounce back with a win against Ashley Lane. ■

JOSHUA VS PULEV

A

nthony Joshua returns to fight on UK soil for the first time in over two years tonight as he puts his IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO Heavyweight World Titles on the line against Mandatory Challenger Kubrat Pulev. Joshua recaptured his belts and position as the Unified Heavyweight World Champion with a masterful unanimous decision victory over Andy Ruiz Jr at the Diriyah Arena in Saudi Arabia on an historical night in December last year. The former Finchley ABC man will be aiming to deal with Bulgaria’s Pulev in style to set up an all-British Undisputed showdown against undefeated WBC Champion Tyson Fury in 2021, but ‘AJ’ insists he has learnt from past mistakes and remains fully focused on the opponent in front of him. “The pressure that I went through last year was tough, but it made me mentally stronger,” said Joshua. “I grew a thicker skin. I’ve always been tough and wanted to fight the best, that’s never been an issue. “What have I got to lose? I’ve got everything to gain. I want to be successful in boxing and the only way to be successful is take on big challenges. This is just another one I’m looking forward to competing with. “I’ve been fighting at a top level ever since I walked into the gym. I had a three-year amateur career, going from walking into the gym to competing at the European Championships, World

“IT’S GOING TO BE LAST MAN STANDING” Championships and the Olympics. “I’ve been punched by the strongest people many times but I’m still here today. That never changed me, just because I took a loss from Ruiz, I don’t think that’s enough to change someone. Every fighter trains hard, but it’s character that separates us, and I’ve got a lot of character. “I’m going to go into the fight, I’m definitely going to get hit and he’s going to get hit, it’s going to be last man standing. “It’ll be good for the fans to be back, but my focus will be just on Pulev. No disrespect to the fans coming in but I’ve got a serious job I need to complete. God willing I’m confident I’ll enjoy the victory after. “I’ve known Kubrat Pulev for many years. I was in the training camp when his brother was sparring Warren Baister. I was in Klitschko’s camp when he prepared for Pulev. I understand some of the tactics that need to go in to beating him. “I’m prepared for the fight to go to the final bell, I feel like I’m a 15-round fighter not a 12-round fighter. If it needs to go 12 rounds, I’ll be more than capable to carry my stamina, my boxing IQ, concentration and strength until the final bell.” ■

THE

COBRA

K

ubrat Pulev is supremely confident of derailing plans for the biggest fight in boxing - an all-British Undisputed Heavyweight World Title showdown between IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO ruler Anthony Joshua and undefeated WBC king Tyson Fury. The former World Title challenger (28-1, 14 KOs) arrived in London a week ago ahead of his second shot at world honours at The SSE Arena, Wembley, shown live on Sky Sports Box Office in the UK and Ireland and on DAZN in the U.S. and more than 200 countries and territories on its just-launched Global platform. Bulgaria’s Pulev says he can see himself exposing the flaws of Joshua in the same manner as Andy Ruiz, who famously dropped the superstar four times on route to a shock seventh round stoppage win at Madison Square Garden in June 2019. “We see a lot of mistakes from Anthony,” said Pulev. “A lot of bad sides to him. I think these mistakes, and the bad sides, stay. The most important thing is how I perform on Saturday night. When I am good, I beat him well. Right now, I feel very good, strong and powerful. I am very strong heading into this fight. “We will see how Joshua performs. I don’t know what to expect from him.

JOSHUA VS PULEV

It doesn’t matter to me. For me it’s only important what I do in the ring and how I prepare. How is my strategy? How is my boxing? This is what is important. I will perform very differently because I have a lot of experience from the Klitschko fight. I will be a new Kubrat Pulev. “This fight is not only for me. This fight isn’t just for boxing. It is for all of Bulgaria. Nobody from my country has ever been Heavyweight Champion of the World. That’s why it will be so good for my country and my people. Bulgarian fans will be really happy. “This was my late father’s dream. That is why me and my brother are here. His project was to have sons, and for them to become boxing champions. And we are now real, this is now fact. He looks down

“I THINK THE WORLD NEEDS A NEW WORLD CHAMPION LIKE ME”

from above and I’m sure he’s happy. He wants to win on Saturday night with me. “I feel healthy and happy. I have a lot of energy. After the fight and after the win, I will be really happy. I think after this fight I’m going to fight with Tyson Fury. It will be good. I don’t believe that the Joshua vs. Fury fight is going to happen because I will win on Saturday night. I think the world needs a new World Champion like me. I am the new World Champion. I am coming.” ■

THE

SAUCE

awrence Okolie remains fully focused on the job at hand despite suffering the bitter disappointment of being robbed of his first shot at world honours after his original opponent Krzysztof Glowacki returned a positive COVID-19 test. ‘The Sauce’ was due to face Glowacki for the WBO Cruiserweight World Title but will now face his compatriot Nikodem Jezewski for the WBO International Title as chief support to his manager Anthony Joshua’s return to UK soil. Okolie claimed the EBU European Cruiserweight Title with a seventhround stoppage of the previously unbeaten Yves Ngabu in October last year, capping a successful 2019 which saw four knockouts in as many fights for the Hackney man. Should he get past Poland’s Jezewski, Shane McGuigan’s charge will most likely face Glowacki for the vacant WBO crown in 2021, and the

9

“THIS FEELS LIKE A FINAL ELIMINATOR” undefeated 27-year-old knows that nothing less than a win will do as he fights for the first time this year. “For me, the most important thing is fighting,” said Okolie. “The Titles will come in due course, I thought it was my time this Saturday, but I’ll just have to keep the training going and beat a good undefeated fighter. “I feel like if anything this is a positive, I’d won the British, Commonwealth, European Title and the World Title shot has just come. However, this feels like a Final Eliminator and it’s added a bit of spice for me. He’s got the world at his

10

feet if he manages to win so I’ll have to make sure I go and do my thing. “This is a great opportunity to put on a mature performance. Shane said he’s not going to be happy with me if I don’t do certain things in this fight, so I’m going to make sure they get done. “It’s one thing doing it in the gym, it’s about executing it on fight day. There are certain things I do in the gym I don’t do in the ring; it’s about translating that. I’m happy to win, but there’s more that I’m capable of doing that I need to bring into the fights if I’m going to be World Champion.” ■

N

ikodem Jezewski jumped at the chance to replace his compatriot Krzysztof Glowacki when the former WBO Cruiserweight World Champion was forced to pull out of his vacant Title shot against Lawrence Okolie after contracting COVID-19. It will be the 29-year-old’s first fight outside of Poland since beginning his professional journey with a pair of bouts in Germany in 2013. However, the allure of being in line to compete for that up-for-grabs WBO Title against a fellow Pole if he can spoil Okolie’s own perfect record was too good to turn down. “Thank you for giving me the chance,” said Jezewski to mediator and fight promoter Eddie Hearn at Thursday’s press conference. “Sorry that my English is no good! But this is a big chance for me. It’s a chance that I will take. “I respect Lawrence because he is an Olympic boxer. Now I’m here, we must go to the ring and fight. I will do everything I can. This is an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down. “I don’t know if this is a good moment for me to fight or a bad moment, but I took the fight and I will give everything. Glowacki spent 12 weeks preparing for Okolie. I had only five days to prepare, but I will give it everything that I’ve got.” ■

BORN

FIGHTER

H

ughie Fury wants to show that he belongs at world level by “doing a job” on Mariusz Wach when he collides with the former World Title challenger. The only defeats on Fury’s 27 fight slate came at world level – a majority 12 round decision dropped in a close and controversial WBO World Title challenge to New Zealand’s Joseph Parker in 2017, a gallant and gory 12 round points loss to Kubrat Pulev in an IBF Final Eliminator in Sofia and a points loss to Alexander Povetkin last summer. At just 26, Fury believes that his best years are ahead of him, and the Manchester contender is confident that there’s still plenty of time left to mount a fresh assault at world honours. Polish veteran Wach took Dillian Whyte the distance in Saudi Arabia a year ago, and Fury knows the former World Title challenger still has plenty to offer.

14

DECEMBER 12 2020

JOSHUA VS PULEV

“He’s a tough man Mariusz Wach,” said Fury. “He’s been in with some great fighters, pretty much everyone, including a World Title challenge. I’m looking forward to doing a job on him. This is definitely one not to miss. It’s been a while and I’m ready to show what I’m all about. “Wach brings power and size, you can’t switch off for a second. I want these kinds of fights as these fights will help me achieve what I need in boxing. I’m expecting a tough fight with Wach. I’ve seen a few of his fights and we’ve done our studying, training and sparring. “I’m ready for all the serious fights out there, I’ve had vast

“I BELONG ON THE WORLD LEVEL” experience and I belong on the world level. I expect to be knocking on the door for another shot at world honours again very soon. I’ve been living in the gym, working on a lot of different aspects of my game, perfecting what I needed to do. “Everything happens for a reason. You’ve just got to stay patient and fight whoever they put in front of you. Boxing is about learning and taking fights. If you believe that you are the best, then you will take on anyone and everyone.” ■

he Viking’s’ professional journey began back in 2005 after representing his native Poland at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens as an amateur as well as winning silver in the Europeans of that same year. The 6’7” puncher accustomed quickly to the professional circuit, winning his opening two bouts by knockout and by April 2012, Wach’s record stood at an impressive 27-0. This stellar form handed him a shot at Unified Heavyweight world ruler, Wladimir Klitschko in Germany at the end of 2012. The pole took the fearsome Ukrainian the distance but lost the bout on the scorecards, his first defeat as a professional. Wach returned to the ring in October 2014, notching four consecutive wins before falling short against Russian Alexander Povetkin at the tail end of 2015. Since then, Wach has had mixed fortunes in the ring, winning five out of his last nine fights. He took Dillian Whyte the distance in Saudi Arabia before outpointing Kevin Johnson over ten rounds in June. “43 other fighters were saying

“I’M IN SOME OF THE BEST FORM OF MY CAREER” similar things like my opponent Hughie,” said Wach. “I hope that this energy he has now will be there on Saturday night. I’m certain I’m in some of the best form of my career and I’m determined to win this bout. “It will be a very difficult fight for both of us, my opponent is much younger and wants to fight his way up to the World Title again, but I want to stop this.” ■

artin Bakole is targeting a rematch with Michael Hunter - the first man to inflict a defeat on him in the pros should he beat dangerous Russian Sergey Kuzmin. Bakole (15-1, 12 KOs) meets Kuzmin in a high-stakes battle for the vacant WBC International Heavyweight Title on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s return to UK soil against IBF Mandatory Challenger Kubrat Pulev, and the Congo-born Airdrie resident hopes that a win will lead to even bigger fights in 2021. The 27-year-old, who is trained by Billy Nelson, has won four on the bounce since his sole defeat to Hunter at York Hall in 2018, whilst the American has won three since, including a victory against Kuzmin. A rematch with ‘The Bounty’ is at the top of Bakole’s wish list. “Saturday is going to be a good fight, I hope Michael Hunter will sit down and see who is going to win,” Bakole said on a ZOOM media conference call on Tuesday. “I know I am going to win this fight in style and the next one is going to be against him. “I already asked him, and he said yes. I learnt a lot from that loss, like you say, and we’re learning from

“HE SAYS EVERYONE IS AVOIDING HIM, SO I’M HERE CALLING HIM OUT” making mistakes. I have improved massively since that loss and if we were to rematch Michael Hunter, I would show what I have learnt since then. “I’m going to beat him [Kuzmin] and the next one I want is Hunter. I always call him out, so we can fight again, why not have a rematch. He says everyone is avoiding him, so I’m here calling him out. Why not have a rematch?” ■

FROM RUSSIA WITH

S

LOVE

ergey Kuzmin has refused to take too much heart from a 32-second stoppage of Britain’s Joe Joyce in the amateurs – but would like to settle the score as professionals if he is victorious tonight. The dangerous Russian returns to London to take on Martin Bakole for the vacant WBC International Heavyweight Title two years on from forcing David Price to retire on his stool on the undercard of Joshua vs. Povetkin at Wembley Stadium. “For me, every fight is very important no matter who the opponent is,” said Kuzmin. “As always, I come to the UK, so this is just a new goal for me facing Martin Bakole. “In the Heavyweight division anything can happen, one punch can change everything. It depends how me or Martin will follow our plans for the fight. It can also go the distance, nobody knows. “I am always very excited to fight in the UK and to show the British fans a fight to remember! I know that he is a well skilled fighter, can take a punch, can box and fight, but can’t wait until fight night to see what he is made of in the ring.”

21

“ONE PUNCH CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING” Joyce became the first man to defeat rising Heavyweight contender Daniel Dubois last month when he stopped the 23-year-old in ten rounds, and Kuzmin says he would love a shot at the newly-crowned British Champion. “It happened very quickly, and it was not a very long fight. It’s hard to describe all that came through my head because I didn’t get to see much of what he brought into the fight. “This was the SuperHeavyweight division and each and every punch matters. I delivered a very good punch accurately and with good timing and it ended the fight. “If the fight happens, we will see. It would not make any sense to compare one fight to another and amateur and professional boxing. But hopefully we will meet one day in the ring and we will see, I am very interested in fighting Joyce in the future in the pros.” ■

TOO

ieron Conway is out to stamp his mark on the red-hot domestic 154lbs division - starting with an eye-catching win over late standin McGowan. ‘Too Class’ (15-1-1, 3 KOs), who was originally slated to fight Souleymane Cissokho this weekend before the Frenchman was forced to pullout, sealed a wide points win to claim the WBA Intercontinental SuperWelterweight Title against Nav Mansouri last time out. After picking up the first Title of his professional career, the Northampton contender, who is trained by his father James, has a hunger for more belts, and already has Matchroom stablemates Scott Fitzgerald, Ted Cheeseman and Anthony Fowler in his sights for 2021. “I’m really pleased that Matchroom and MTK found an opponent and a good fighter coming to take an opportunity,” said Conway. “When I found out Cissokho had pulled out I was very frustrated. The whole buildup was frustrating. I’m still up for taking the opportunity against Cissokho if it comes, I have no reason to avoid anyone. “I hadn’t seen too much about Macaulay before the fight was made so I will be using my time wisely and finding the inevitable patterns in his

25

“I HAVE NO REASON TO AVOID ANYONE” work and do what I must to get the win. In all honesty you couldn’t take much from his last fight as Kulakhmet is a great fighter and would make most look bad. “If McGowan over commits which will happen, I will land hard accurate punches which absolutely could end the night early. Being on this show is huge. There’s going to be massive viewing figures and I’m excited to still be part of the whole thing. After this fight I want more big fights.” ■

acaulay McGowan has promised to go to war with MTK Global stablemate Kieron Conway when the Super-Welterweights meet over ten rounds. McGowan (14-1-1, 3 KOs) suffered the first loss of his professional career last month when he was outpointed by rising Kazakh star Tursynbay Kulakhmet for the vacant WBC International Title in South Kirby, Yorkshire. Undeterred by his first taste of defeat, the 26-year-old Mancunian, who is trained by Gary Booth, jumped at the chance to face Northampton’s Conway (15-1-1, 3 KOs), after his original opponent Souleymane Cissokho was forced to pull out of their fight. “I’m absolutely buzzing,” said McGowan. “I want to be involved in good fights, so to be in a good fight on probably the biggest show of the year is great. “I got punched from pillar to post in my last fight with Kulakhmet. It wasn’t my night. It is what it is. Boxing and life is about being resilient. There’s no time to moan about it, I was straight back training and now it’s time to bounce back and get a good win.

“I’M COMING FOR WAR AND WAR ONLY!”

“One thing I learned from going into that Kulakhmet fight and how it all played out was that I was thinking about it too much and what the opponent was going to do. I don’t care about what Conway is coming with, I just worry about me. I’m going to war, that is that. “I had all these ideas of how the fight was going to go and he came out totally different and better to how I expected him to. He didn’t do what I thought he’d do. Boxing is all about learning and I’m coming back stronger and hungrier than ever. “A busy fighter is a happy fighter. My career has always been stop-start, so to be fighting straight away, and having a tough ten rounds in the bank will only help bring out the best in me. I will never shy away from competition. I’m coming for war and war only!” ■

ALBANIAN

KING

L

ondon-based Albanian Welterweight sensation Florian Marku makes his keenly anticipated Matchroom Boxing debut against Jamie Stewart just over two weeks on from inking a promotional deal with Eddie Hearn. The decorated former MMA fighter turned professional in December 2018 and has won all seven of his contests in impressive fashion, with five of those wins coming inside the distance. Trained by Don Charles and managed by S-JAM Boxing, Marku hopes to lock in some big fights in 2021 by making a knockout statement on his Sky Sports and DAZN debut. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time,” said Marku. “I’ve been training really hard; this is my moment. I don’t care who is in front of me, I don’t see opponents. I only see someone who is trying to stop me from reaching my dreams and making my families lives better. “I’m not new in this game, I have been fighting since I was 12 years old. I have 170 kickboxing fights, I was four-time World Champion. This is not new for me. “My Albanian fans make the difference. They fill stadiums

“I HAVE BEEN FIGHTING SINCE I WAS 12 YEARS OLD” wherever I’ve been, and I appreciate that. Now I will win with my performance and character with the UK fans. “I want whoever thinks that they are the best fight in my division. Bring the best guys with the best records and you’ll see what I’ll do to them. When they are in the ring with me, they change, when they are in front of me everything changes. When they see my speed and power, they

will change.” One man Marku has in his sights is Matchroom stablemate Conor Benn, and when asked to give his opinion on ‘The Destroyer’ at Thursday’s press conference, he didn’t hold back. “Conor will avoid me! He can’t handle the pressure. I would 100% beat him by knockout if we fight. One punch and it would be a KO, his time will come!” ■

THE GOLDEN

OPPORTUNITY J

amie Stewart used social media to land himself a shot live on Sky Sports Box Office and DAZN, calling out 147lbs dangerman Florian Marku on Twitter when the Albanian’s original opponent Alex Fearon pulled out earlier this week. 2-0 as a professional, Stewart claimed a notable scalp last time out in the shape of Michael Hennessy Jr in September, and the 28-year-old says he has identified weaknesses in Marku’s arsenal which he plans to exploit. “I’ve been ready since September, since my last outing with Hennessey Jr at Light-Middleweight,” said Stewart. “I did what I had to do to get the fight. Sometimes a boxer might not fight because of someone pulling out, so I thought I could grab this opportunity to get back out there and for people to see who I am. “I feel like there’s more to come for me. I took that fight on a two-week notice, I wasn’t really training for the fight. Since after that fight I’ve been in the gym every day, non-stop, lowering my weight. “I feel ready and comfortable. I know he’s dangerous, I’ve been saying for months I don’t want to fight journeymen anymore. I need a test and a challenge, and I know he’s a big puncher – that’s something I want to risk. “I’ve got a lot of people following me back home, so I’ve got to put on a good show. I want to be there fighting decent fighters, I want to show that I’m tough and ready. “Stoke loud and proud! I’m here to throw my hands not get walked over!” ■

BOUNCING

BACK

Q

ais Ashfaq looks to return to winning ways and reignite his Title ambitions in 2021 after suffering his first professional defeat at the Marshall Arena in October.Â

34

DECEMBER 12 2020

JOSHUA VS PULEV

“I WANT TO MAKE A STATEMENT” Rio 2016 Olympian Ashfaq, who is trained by Angel Fernandez, was desperate to get back in the ring this side of 2020 to right the wrongs of his fight with Marc Leach, and insists he has learnt from the setback and will return stronger as a result of it. “You can always learn something from a defeat,” said Ashfaq. “You learn more than you do from a win, because sometimes things go wrong, if you win you might brush them under the carpet. That defeat will keep me in good stead down the line.” “My faith helped me get through the loss. I trust the process and believe that everything happens for a reason. Nobody wants to lose and after suffering that defeat, I don’t want to experience it again. “I don’t like to make excuses but there were a few factors going on behind the scenes in the build-up to that fight. I want to rematch Marc Leach and I hope with victory tonight that fight can be made.

Standing in the opposite corner is Bristol’s Ashley Lane. The former Commonwealth Champion has only lost once since 2017 when he challenged for Brad Foster’s British crown at Super-Bantamweight in May of last year. Despite being an obvious favourite heading in, Ashfaq is certainly not overlooking Lane, who has held and challenged for domestic Titles Ashfaq is targeting. “Ashley Lane is no mug; he’s only lost once in his last eight fights. Within those last eight fights he was a Commonwealth Champion at my weight. “I’m ready to take on all the step ups, I take on all the fights – I’m not one to shy away from any fights. That’s the way I mean to go on. “I definitely want to make a statement, but the pressure doesn’t bother me. Pressure makes diamonds. I’m one of those people that has been to the highest mountains in the amateurs. It didn’t bother me then; it doesn’t bother me now.” ■

35

ASH THE

FLASH F

ormer Commonwealth Super-Bantamweight Champion Ashley Lane is relishing his chance to be back on the big stage and admits he jumped at the opportunity to tackle Qais Ashfaq on the biggest UK show of the year. Last May, Lane put his Commonwealth crown on the line against reigning British Champion Brad Foster on the undercard of Billy Joe Saunders’ World Title clash with Shefat Isufi at Stevenage Football Club. Despite falling short, it was his first defeat since 2016 and tonight he comes with confidence he can get past Ashfaq, a defeat which would be very difficult for the former Olympian to bounce back from. “Ashfaq is going to be feeling a bit down after that loss to Mark Leach but I’m expecting him to bring a good performance and we’ll bring a good performance,” said Lane. “It’ll be a great fight and god willing I’ll have my hand raised. “Jamie and Chris rang me and said we’ve got you a fight on the AJ show. It’s an opportunity you can’t turn down. “I see this fight as a bonus for me. I walked away from boxing three months ago and I wasn’t going to come back. Now I’m here at one of the biggest shows of the year, this is a bonus so no matter what happens on the night I’ve already won. “One loss doesn’t dictate whether you go on to win Titles or not, so whatever happens Saturday, Ashfaq has got a future and I’ve got a few more years in boxing. God willing I’ll win, and I can’t retire now.” ■
