A WELCOME FROM

EDDIE HEARN

G

ood evening everyone. Wow! How lucky are we to be here? We’ve enjoyed the stunning scenery and weather here in beautiful Gibraltar since arriving on Wednesday. We’re very grateful to everybody in Gibraltar for helping us to make this massive event happen. Three or four weeks ago I wondered if this could be done. They say it always seems impossible until it is done. In the current environment we are always having to think on our feet. We did everything to try and make March 6 happen, but with the new travel restrictions it was impossible. Now we have something outside the box, compelling, and a unique setting for one of the Heavyweight Fights of the Year – the Rumble On The Rock! This is a historic moment here in Gibraltar, the rematch for the WBC

Interim Heavyweight World Title between Alexander Povetkin and Dillian Whyte, live and exclusive on Sky Sports Box Office in the UK and DAZN around the world. We cannot wait to give you a night that you will not forget. It has been a tremendous experience so far and I’m confident that you will love tonight’s action. It’s a great card from top to bottom with some real 50-50 matchups. Fabio Wardley steps up against twotime Heavyweight World Title challenger Eric Molina, Ted Cheeseman attempts to recapture the British Super-Welterweight Title against unbeaten James Metcalf, Campbell Hatton takes his first steps as a professional, unbeaten Welterweights Chris Kongo and Michael McKinson put it all on the line, Nick Webb returns against Eric Pfeifer and Kane Baker meets unbeaten Wembley SuperFeatherweight Youssef Khoumari. ■

REVENGE IS

MANDATORY

D

illian Whyte says his must-win rematch with Alexander Povetkin for the Interim WBC Heavyweight World Title at the Europa Point Sports Complex in Gibraltar is the biggest fight of his career to date. ‘The Body Snatcher’ (27-2, 18 KOs) has a chance to exact revenge over Russia’s Povetkin (36-2-1, 25 KOs) following his shock defeat to the former World Champion in the final weekend of Matchroom Fight Camp in Essex last August. Brixton’s Whyte has been forced to wait patiently for his rematch with Povetkin, the two were set to meet in November but the Olympic Champion tested positive for coronavirus ahead of that date and it had to be postponed. Their second clash was then supposed to usher in the new year of boxing but, at the start of January, the sport was suspended amid the growing coronavirus cases in the UK, but the 32-year-old says the delays have given him more time to make the necessary adjustments in order to get the win tonight. “This time I’ll beat him, and we’ll see what people are going to say.” said Whyte. “One, two or three losses means nothing to a Heavyweight nowadays. If you fight good fighters, the main thing is you can come back. This is a must-win fight for me, but I’m not a guy that worries about pressure. I just smile and take it in my stride. “I was a fighter a long time before I was a boxer. I’ve been knocking people out for a long time. I carry a lot of power in both hands. Povetkin is a very cagey guy and an experienced guy, a very patient guy. He’s a tough guy as well. Last time I didn’t land properly and he went down, but he showed resilience by getting up and then he stopped me. This time when I hit him, he’ll stay down. “I’m a very adaptable kind of guy, I’ll do what I need to do to get the win. I don’t care if I’ve got to rough a guy up

or outbox them. I’ll do whatever it takes for me to win. It’s the biggest fight of my career. I’m coming off a loss to the guy. The good thing is this is Heavyweight boxing. One fight changes everything. “It’s a fight man. You don’t know how you’re going to feel on the day. You don’t know what’s going to happen and you don’t know how the other guy is going to come. As long as I’m able to adapt on the day, that’s all that matters. “I don’t care if I have to throw two jabs and move or get in and throw power punches and rough him up. I’ll do whatever I have to do. I’m not worried about a career-best performance, I’m worried about getting the win. My mindset is I’ve got a job to do and I’ll do whatever I need to do to get it done. “I’m still young and I’ve got loads of fights left in my career God willing. I can worry about looking good in another fight. This is about winning. When I touch him this time his whole body is going to vibrate, he’ll understand. I’m coming to do what I do best and that’s to inflict pain. If I’ve got to make it a dog fight, then I’ll make it a dog fight. It will be a different story this time.” ■

TWICE?

lexander Povetkin believes he can knock out Dillian Whyte with a different punch to their first fight. Povetkin (36-2-1, 25 KOs) slammed home a brutal uppercut last summer at Matchroom Fight Camp in Essex that ended Whyte’s World Title hopes in a flash. Whyte had completely controlled the fight, flooring Povetkin twice in the fourth round, but was smashed by a left uppercut in the fifth. The pair rematch with the Interim WBC Heavyweight World Title on the line tonight at the Europa Point Sports Complex in Gibraltar, the first Heavyweight clash the country has ever hosted, and ‘Sasha’ says he is ready for anything ‘The Body Snatcher’ brings to the table. “I’m very happy to be here, I’m relaxed, confident and the only thing on my mind right now is to go out and show some good boxing,” said Povetkin. “I’ve almost forgotten about the last fight because this is finished. I think that Dillian will be better in the second fight than the first. At the same time, I’ll try to be more careful, pay attention more to my defence. “I haven’t watched the first fight too many times but I pay attention to the mistakes that I made. I didn’t watch it to celebrate my win. It was for homework. I will try to fix my mistakes form the previous fight and try not to repeat them. “The left hook I was prepared for, and the right hand. But the uppercut works. You never know which will work in the next fight. I will try to

“I’M READY FOR ANYTHING” defend myself better. My defensive skills must be better. And I will try to punch shorter. “I don’t have this mindset that I’ll knock him out. It could go the distance; I’m not focusing on the knockout and I’m going to follow my plan. He can do whatever he wants. I’m ready for anything. I’ve been through this many times. I will be ready. Povetkin, a former WBA World Champion, confirmed he would battle on if he beats Whyte again and would target Anthony Joshua or Tyson Fury who are expected to contest the undisputed Heavyweight World Title later this year. “It would be very interesting to fight Joshua again. Or Tyson Fury because they are both great athletes. But it depends on the promoters. It depends on different options. Oleksandr Usyk is also waiting.” ■

ast rising Ipswich Heavyweight Fabio Wardley takes a huge step up through the levels tonight as he collides with former two-time World Title challenger Eric Molina. Wardley secured his tenth professional victory in impressive fashion last November, despatching Richard Lartey in two rounds to notch his ninth KO. The 26-year-old’s win over the tough Ghanaian came quicker than his Heavyweight rivals Daniel Dubois and Nathan Gorman, and he believes a career best victory over ‘Drummer Boy’ on the undercard of manager Dillian Whyte, will further establish him as one of the most exciting talents in boxing’s blue-ribbon division. “I’ve come from the same breed, cut from the same cloth as Dillian,” said Wardley. “There are no easy fights, we take all opponents when they come and big chances and opportunities when they’re in front of us. This is one of those, not just for the fight but for the occasion as well. “To be a part of an event like this is great, I’m looking forward to the fight, putting on a fantastic performance and really showcasing some of my skills. “The team and I are looking to do it all, we’re looking to do the big fights when they’re there in front of us and then come back around for some big level domestic dust ups when they’re there as well. “We’re talking all the opportunities that are in front of us and relishing the moment. I’m fortunate to be part of events like this, I’m thankful and looking forward to a big fight. Molina will be a great name to add to the resume.” ■

DRUMMER

BOY H

ailing from the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, Eric Molina arrives in Gibraltar highly motivated to inflict a first career defeat on Ipswich talent Fabio Wardley and prove to the world and the Heavyweight division he is still very much a threat. Molina has twice challenged for World honours, firstly in 2015 against Deontay Wilder before travelling to Manchester to fight Anthony Joshua in what was the first defence of ‘AJ’s’ IBF belt in December 2016. Mixed fortunes have followed for ‘Drummer Boy’, who has since won two and lost two since his fight with AJ. The 38-year-old was dropped and stopped by fast rising Croatian dangerman Filip Hrgovic last time out in December 2019 and despite over a year out the ring, believes he has spotted flaws in the inexperienced Wardley and will exploit them in tonight’s clash. “Fabio’s young, a rising star in England,” said Molina. “When I first got the call to be honest, I’d never heard of the guy. While looking into him it reminds me a lot of myself, coming in with one amateur fight and I was the same age as him when I got started. I’m hoping to come in Saturday and give him everything he’s got to learn.” The 33-fight veteran believes his experience under the lights in comparison to his young Ipswich dance partner can be his key to victory as he bids to prove he can more than hold his own with the new crop of Heavyweights bursting onto the scene. “The only thing I’ve got going for myself in this fight is my experience. Coming into these fights as I can get older, they don’t get easier. There’s a new generation of Heavyweights coming up, Fabio is in the mix, this is a type of fight I need to see where I’m at. I need to see if I can mix it with these young lions, I’m looking forward to the test on tonight.” ■

THE BIG

T

CHEESE

ed Cheeseman says fans can expect to see the very best version of him when he clashes with unbeaten Liverpudlian James Metcalf for the vacant British SuperWelterweight Title. ‘The Big Cheese’ (16-2-1, 9 KOs) captured the 154lbs Lord Lonsdale Challenge Belt by outpointing Reading’s Asinia Byfield at the Copper Box Arena in October 2018, before retaining it against Kieron Conway at York Hall in June 2019 via a controversial draw. The Bermondsey fighter, 25, lost the British Title to Preston’s Scott Fitzgerald in Newcastle at the back end of 2019, but felt he did enough to beat the ‘Mad Man’. A brilliant win over Sam Eggington at Fight Camp last summer followed, and now Cheeseman has the chance to recapture the British crown tonight. “It would mean everything to me to win the British Title back,” said Cheeseman. “I believe that I didn’t deserve to lose it. In my opinion, the only fight that I deserved to lose was against Sergio Garcia. I believe my record should be eighteen wins with one loss. But we push on. As I’ve shown, as long as you keep moving and keep your head down, you’ll get back to where you want to be. “I’m not looking past this fight. This is a tough fight. James Metcalf is a 21-0 fighter and he’s a good fighter. I’ve done

that a million times before, ‘I want to fight this person and I want to fight that person’, all I know is by winning this fight it’s going to get me the British Title back. I’m going to push into the top 5 rankings with the IBF and I’ll just have to wait and see what my manager and team have planned for me. “This fight you’re going to see Ted Cheeseman coming off a big win against Sam Eggington, with another half a year or so improvement in the gym. I’ve been working hard with Tony and I’ve had some good sparring. I’ve been leaving the gym thinking about what I did in the session and what I can improve upon. That’s why you’re going to see such a better Ted Cheeseman in this fight. “I’m highly confident of getting the win. On paper James will be one of the

“IT WOULD MEAN EVERYTHING TO WIN THE BRITISH TITLE BACK” toughest opponents that I’ve faced in my career. Looking through his resume, there’s not really anyone that I can pick out as a tough fight. Jason Welborn was the biggest fight, and no disrespect to Jason but it’s a fight James should have been winning. We’re going to see how good JJ Metcalf is tonight. Whether he’s the real deal or whether he’s found his level.” ■

J Metcalf believes victory over Ted Cheeseman tonight will catapult his name into the mix for massive fights at Super-Welterweight. Metcalf and Cheeseman clash for the vacant British title at 154lbs but there’s more at stake than just the prestigious Lord Lonsdale belt. Metcalf holds a lofty spot at five in the IBF rankings with Cheeseman on his coattails at number eight, so both men are closing in on a World title shot. The domestic scene is red hot too with the likes of Anthony Fowler and Scott Fitzgerald on the horizon, both fights that would be attractive to the Liverpool man and son of Liverpool favourite Shea Neary – but the 32 year old is focused on the job at hand in what many believe will be the fight of the night. “It’s a great card from top to bottom, but I do think that this is going to steal the show,” said Metcalf. “I can box, and I can fight, I’m ready to do both to get the win. “The only other big name on my record is Jason Welborn, and with Ted being on Sky Sports and with Matchroom and Eddie, it’s the perfect platform for me. I’m made up that there’s fans here too. Someone told me that there were only about 1,000 fans at the Joshua-Pulev fight, but they made a lot of noise and I hope that it’ll be the same tonight “This fight was meant to happen a few years back, but it just didn’t come off, so I am made up to be in this position now. I think you are going to get an exciting fight. “We’re both ranked in the top ten with the IBF so it could really propel the winner towards

“I’M GOING TO TAKE THIS WITH BOTH HANDS” that title, so if I come out and do a good job on him, there’s nothing stopping me. “It’s not my ultimate dream but it’s right up there to have that Lord Lonsdale belt. There’s been a lot of British champions from Liverpool and I would love to be amongst those names. “It’s a must win for me. I feel like I’ve been owed this chance for a while and now it’s come I’m going to take this with both hands. “I’ve grew up watching my dad box, being proud of him, now it’s my turn to return the favour. “I’m soaking up the experience, enjoying it. I’ve been on undercards with Tyson Fury and Josh Warrington, this is a lot better but I’m alright with it all.” ■

ampbell Hatton, son of Manchester’s two-weight World Champion Ricky, makes his keenly anticipated professional debut in a four-round Lightweight contest against Jesus Ruiz this evening. The 20-year-old Manchester City fanatic signed promotional terms with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing in December and kicks off life in the paid ranks with his uncle Matthew, a former World Title challenger, in his corner. Managed by his dad alongside Anthony Joshua’s 258 MGT, ‘The Hurricane’ believes he has the perfect team around him as he looks to follow in the footsteps of ‘The Hitman’ and make his own mark on the sport. “I’m really excited, the nerves are slowly starting to come in,” said Hatton. “People have been saying has all the media been getting a bit much, but it hasn’t. It’s doing me good because it’s a bit of a distraction to keep the nerves away. “I’m just really excited, ready to go and been flying in the gym. I did my last punching session on Thursday morning, and I felt really sharp so I can’t wait to show everyone what I can do. “The main bit of advice I’ve had from everybody is to stay calm. The number of eyes on me there will be nerves and I’ll be eager to please people. The main thing for me is to do myself justice. “I want people to see the Campbell Hatton that’s in the gym, sparring, because when people see that it’s what impresses people. I do set a high pace, but I need to be calm and calculated about it.

“I WANT PEOPLE TO SEE THE CAMPBELL HATTON THAT’S IN THE GYM” “You always get people who have something to say, for me I just to go in there and do myself justice. If I’m the best Campbell Hatton I can be, I’ll be happy with that and it’ll be enough to impress the people who are behind me. “With time I’ll be able to show people what I can do, staying calm is my main goal for this fight and doing myself

justice. There’s no bigger platform in the world that I could be signed to, so I’m in a great position. I can’t wait to get in there now, my goal is to be as busy as possible to start with, and to just keep learning and improving with each fight. “I’m very lucky to be in the position I’m in with my dad being a former World Champion and my uncle Matthew also being a World Title challenger as well because their experience in the game is second to none. There aren’t many people who can say they have that sort of advice.” ■

CHRIS

hris Kongo is ready to prove he is the best Welterweight in the country by becoming the first man to beat 19-0 Michael McKinson. Bermondsey’s Kongo clinically dispatched Luther Clay in nine rounds to win the WBO Global Title at Fight Camp last summer, taking full advantage of his first opportunity of the big stage to extend his unbeaten record to 12-0 with seven knockouts. Saturday’s clash with Portsmouth’s McKinson is a big step-up for the 28-year-old, who has drawn confidence from the valuable rounds he’s banked sparring with unified World SuperLightweight Champion Josh Taylor ahead of his Undisputed clash with Jose Ramirez. “I’m the underdog in this fight,” said Kongo. “I’ll win it. I’ve got a better skillset, I’m stronger, a lot faster and it’s all about being smart in the ring and I believe I’m the best and the smartest in the UK – period. “The Kongo-McKinson story began when we sparred three years ago, only the one spar, he didn’t come back after that. I’ve got the big platform and I’ve got the Title now – he’s got no more Titles. He’s looking for the opportunity, so he’s coming to me. My focus is still the same, getting to the top and trying to get rid of McKinson. “I’ve been sparring top fighters, a guy that’s going on to become Undisputed Champion of the World. I can’t get any

better preparation than that, so I’m fully ready and focused. To be able to spar a World Champion before I go into a British level fight is wicked. It’s going to up my game and it has. I’ve been able to feel it, I’ve seen it. I feel a lot better and I feel a lot sharper. “A lot of people are mentioning me in the mix with the likes of Conor Benn and Josh Kelly, now it’s my time to put my stamp on the division. I believe I am the best in the UK. Now it’s my time coming up, and I believe right now is the worst time to fight me. Michael McKinson, I’m bringing fireworks and I’m bringing the heat so make sure you’re ready.” ■

M

ichael McKinson says he is ready to announce himself as the best Welterweight in the country when he takes on Chris Kongo for the WBO Global Welterweight Title. Portsmouth’s McKinson has won all nineteen of his professional contests, with two of those wins coming via knockout, and the 26-year-old prospect has picked up the WBC Youth World, WBC International Silver and WBO European Welterweight Titles in an impressive run. Kongo comes tonight’s battle of the unbeaten Welterweights coming off the back of a breakout win over Luther Clay at Fight Camp last summer, but ‘The Problem’ believes he is a level above Bracknell’s Clay and is determined to prove it in the ‘Rumble On The Rock’. “I found out recently that maybe he wanted to fight me a couple of years ago,” said McKinson. “I must have had a Title fight lined up. I’ve been in some decent level fights for a good few years now whereas he hasn’t. He had a tough time getting fights. I’ve been in quite a few Title fights now. He was very inactive and very frustrated for a while. “I always want to fight the guys that have a big platform and the guys that have a lot of hype around them. I want to prove myself as the best Welterweight in the UK. I’ve been calling for big fights for quite a while. After my last fight, the one name that I called out in my post fight interview was Chris. Then we got on somebody’s

“HE’S IN WITH A DIFFERENT KETTLE OF FISH THIS TIME” Instagram live and there was a bit of back and forth. “It has all been respectful to be fair. I knew that Chris would fight me. I’ve been wanting a big fight for a while and nothing really materialised until my manager Lee Eaton from MTK called me and asked me if I’d fight Chris in six weeks. I said definitely. The three extra weeks because of the delay have just been a bonus. “I’ve started from the very bottom. I’m from a small fighting city really, Portsmouth. I’ve had to do things the hard way. I’ve been the B side many times before. I’ve fought for no money; I’ve come up the hard way with little publicity. I wasn’t a top amateur which didn’t help me when I first turned pro. “You’ve got two hungry ambitious confident lads, unbeaten lads coming to the ring and fighting each other. It’s great for the boxing public. I was impressed that he got Luther Clay out of there and stopped him. I’ve sparred with Luther Clay a lot in the past. He’s in with a different kettle of fish this time. He will notice that very early.” ■

illian Whyte confirmed Erik Pfeifer as his latest signing earlier this month and added the undefeated Heavyweight to his ‘Rumble On The Rock’ undercard. Pfeifer will battle British contender Nick Webb for the vacant IBO International Heavyweight Title as he looks to go 8-0. The unbeaten 34-year-old was denied a fight with Daniel Dubois after being replaced at short notice, but Whyte is confident that Pfeifer can make a big impact in the top division. “Erik is a good guy, a top amateur,” said Whyte. “He fought Joshua, Tony Yoka and Joe Joyce, so he’s a top guy. “A lot of people don’t know much about him, because he turned professional late, but he’s tough. “The guy knows where he’s at in his career and where he’s trying to go, and he’s a dangerous guy. “Daniel Dubois pulled out of the fight for a reason, because they done their research and they saw how extensive his amateur career is, and how good he is.” Speaking at Thursday’s press conference at the Alameda Open Air Theatre, Pfeifer said: “Training has been very good, I’m in great shape and I will show everyone the best of me tonight. “Dillian is a very strong guy it was a very hard sparring session. I left feeling perfect and I’m here ready to fight. “I think this is my chance, I will use it and show the world who I am and how well I can box.” ■

WILD

WEBB

N

ick Webb can finally put the demons of a damaging defeat behind him and resurrect his promising Heavyweight career with a win over Erik Pfeifer tonight. Webb had moved serenely to 12-0 and was eyeing up big names before that came crashing down at The O2 in London in July 2018 when he was KO’d by Dave Allen. The 33-year-old won his next bout against Dorian Darch two months later but then suffered a second KO defeat in December 2018. Webb returned with three wins on one night a year later and the night has renewed his confidence, and while he knows that the two-time Olympian is a threat, he’s confident of producing the KO win he needs to get back on track. “Erik is a great challenge, a great name who was a really good amateur. This is a great place to showcase my skills and I can’t wait. “He’s got a lot of pedigree, but that was in the amateurs and a long time ago, this is the pros now. “The Dave Allen fight was a long time ago; it was a hard lesson learned and it’s made me a better fighter. I’m coming into this on the back of three wins in one night. “I was the favourite against Allen, and I got knocked out in front of lots of fans, that’s the worst thing that can happen so I’ve got over that and now I’ve got nothing to lose. No-one can do anything worse to me, I’ve learnt the hard way and I’m back better, more seasoned, angry, determined and I just want it more. “It would be a great win and one that would put me back to where I was before I lost to Allen. I think I knock him out. I am a puncher; I catch anyone and they go. I’ve got the skills to outbox him, but it won’t got the distance. This is a must win, there’s no other option – I’m winning and that’s that.” ■

KHOUMARI Y

oussef Khoumari wants to seize the attention of Britain’s best SuperFeatherweight with a ruthless victory over Kane Baker in this evening’s opening bout. The unbeaten 24-year-old welcomed the opportunity to battle the ‘dangerous’ Baker on the undercard of his manager Dillian Whyte’s must-win rematch with Alexander Povetkin. Baker ruined the perfect record of Meshech Speare in his last fight, but Khoumari is confident he will overcome the Birmingham man in explosive style. “I’m ready to go, I’m really grateful to Dillian Whyte and Eddie Hearn for the opportunity,” said Khoumari. “I’ve had a good, long camp, everything’s gone perfect and I’m looking forward to it. “A lot of guys turn pro looking to be a part of events like this. I’m so privileged to be a part of an event this big and I’m going to grab it with both hands tonight. “Dillian likes to say maximum violence all the time so fans can expect maximum violence from me. It’s going to be a very fan friendly fight, both of our styles match. He likes to throw a lot of punches, I like to throw a lot of punches, we’re going to meet in the middle and it’s going to be a fantastic war for the fans. “I’m expecting the best Kane Baker, but on the other side of the ring is going to be the best me. It’s going to be a good head to head clash. We’re working on turning over the punches and throwing some really hurtful shots. The plan is to try and get Kane out of there.” ■

FAN WITH A

LICENCE

P

opular Birmingham puncher Kane Baker is looking to continue a successful few months on the Matchroom platform tonight when he collides with undefeated Youssef Khoumari in Gibraltar. Baker was scheduled to fight Jamie Moore protege Aqib Fiaz on the second instalment of the Matchroom Fight Camp series last summer before Fiaz pulled out the evening before the bout. Despite falling short in their rescheduled clash three months later, Baker returned to upset the applecart just thirteen days later, outworking and outpointing the previously unbeaten Tony Bellew charge Meshech Speare. The 30-year-old “boxing fan with a licence” has taken everything in his stride this week and has been promised a slot on Fight Camp in the summer by promoter Eddie Hearn if he can emerge victorious. “I’m feeling comfortable in these events 100%, but I’ll always be a boxing fan with a licence I can’t take that away,” said Baker. “I can’t thank Matchroom enough for the year you’ve given me, I’m going to repay everybody on Saturday night with an explosive performance. “Winner stays on, that’s given me a kick that I needed. Saturday I’ll win again, I just want to fight in your garden Eddie. I’m not worried about titles; I just want to win this Saturday and fight in your garden. “I’m going to do whatever it takes to get the win Saturday night. I’m going to be in his face throwing punches all night.” ■
