A WELCOME FROM

EDDIE HEARN A

ll-British World Title fights are always special, especially in the Super-Middleweight division, and I’m really excited to see Billy Joe Saunders back in the ring. We were 24 hours away from an announcement for Billy to fight Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez when the pandemic hit, and so it throws up the final roll of the dice for Martin Murray who will give it everything. We’ve been lifted by the news that fans will finally return for the Anthony Joshua versus Kubrat Pulev fight next week, with 1,000 allowed into The SSE Arena, Wembley, so we hope this will be our last ever show behind closed doors. I can’t tell you how happy I am to see fans returning to our live boxing. Whilst the team have done an incredible job over the last 10 months, we live

and breathe through the energy and atmosphere that a live crowd generates. We’re closing out our behind closed doors events with a great night of action that sees hard-hitting Belfast Lightweight James Tennyson take on undefeated Canadian Josh O’Reilly in an Eliminator for the WBA World Title. Shannon Courtenay looks to return to winning ways down at Bantamweight after suffering the first loss of her career to Rachel Ball, WBO 168lbs No.1 Zach Parker aims to make a statement against Cesar Nunez, Lerrone Richards makes his Matchroom debut after signing last month, plus there’s action from Sheffield Featherweight talent Donte Dixon and Southampton SuperMiddleweight Lewis Edmondson. ■

LEAVING A

LEGACY

B

illy Joe Saunders insists that he hasn’t overlooked four-time World Title challenger Martin Murray as he prepares to put his WBO SuperMiddleweight crown on the line for the second time. Hatfield star Saunders (29-0, 14 KOs) was on the verge of securing a mega fight with Mexican pound-forpound icon Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez earlier this year before the coronavirus pandemic turned the sporting world on its head and scuppered his shot at greatness. Saunders, who was scheduled to face Murray twice in 2018, has expressed his desire to take on the winner of Alvarez vs. Callum Smith in a huge unification battle in 2021, but the 31-year-old twoweight World Champion has refused to underestimate St Helens man Murray. “I just want to get one in before the end of the year,” said Saunders. “There’s a lot of fighters struggling to get out. I’ve had a major disappointment. The Canelo fight fell through in May. On Friday we’ll rock and roll. “If you want to go on professional experience, he’s had more fights than me. He’s challenged for the World Title four times. He should have been World Champion in two of those fights. I’ve

promised him a chance. “There’s always a risk I could get in there and get knocked out in one round. There’s a risk to people’s lives. I haven’t overlooked Martin. I’ve trained myself the best I can for the date. I know he doesn’t lay down; I can’t afford that kind of performance. “Martin has his own mind. He’s prepared

how he wants to prepare, whether he wants to train on emotion, grit or experience. He has to find a way to beat me and that will be difficult for any fighter on the planet. I can sense frustration from Martin’s camp. We had two fights that fell through. “I would be disappointed if I went in there and blew him away in one round. I

“I HAVEN’T OVERLOOKED MARTIN” need rounds for next year. I need to get in there, in the real thing, to go into the big fights next year. To get over that bridge I need to beat Martin Murray. He’s not one of those fighters you can ever completely right off.” ■

LAST CHANCE

SALOON

M

artin Murray believes it is finally his time to land a World Title at the fifth attempt when he takes on undefeated WBO Super-Middleweight World Champion Billy Joe Saunders. Four-time World Title challenger Murray (39-5-1, 17 KOs) stands in the way of unification fights for Saunders in 2021, and the St Helens man is more determined than ever to finally land a World Title of his own and put his rivalry with Saunders to bed after their scheduled meeting in 2018 fell through twice. “It’s a difficult fight, like all my big fights,” said Murray. “Billy Joe offers me something different. He’s kind of like Sergio Martinez, obviously younger and slicker. I’ve been training for it. I’m ready for it. I’m confident. All the little setbacks I’ve had in the past have been building to this. I feel like it’s my time. “There was no bad blood really between me and Billy to be honest, it was just a lot of frustration after he pulled out twice. That got left where it was, but we’ve definitely got some unfinished business. I’m expecting a hard fight and Billy Joe to be at his best, so I’ll be ready.”

SAUNDERS VS MURRAY

Despite his age, Murray believes that he is more than fit enough to compete with Saunders, who is seven years younger than him. Asked if he believes the age difference is important, he said, “I don’t. I look after myself between fights. “I do a lot of training, eat right. I’m a young 38. I know there’s a big win in me. Everyone’s writing me off. There’s no pressure on me. But I know that I rise to the big occasions. You’ll see the best of me.” Murray, who hasn’t fought since he outpointed Sladan Janjanin at the Olympia in Liverpool back in November 2019, also admitted that the coronavirus pandemic had led him to believe that his career may have been brought to a premature end. “I thought, ‘It’s ruined my career.’” he added. “I almost called it a day. I thought it could finish my career. I’ve always

“I FEEL LIKE IT’S MY TIME” believed in myself, there’s always been hope, and I thought that it was going to finish my career, and it’s ended up making it. “It would be nice to finish the year on a high, and for my career I’ve worked for a World Title and I’ve been in some lonely places. I’d never have believed it but here we are. “I had an unhealthy obsession with winning a World Title. No one has won one from St Helens. Now I am a lot more relaxed about the situation. On Friday, I really do feel it’s my time.” ■

ALL ON THE

LINE

J

ames Tennyson says he is ready to step up to the next level and mix it with the best 135lbs fighters on the planet, and the heavy-handed Belfast banger intends on proving it when he takes on unbeaten Canadian Josh O’Reilly. ‘The Assassin’ (27-3, 23 KOs) continued his destructive form last time out at Matchroom Fight Camp in August when he claimed the vacant British Lightweight Title with a ruthless sixth round stoppage win over brave but battered Welshman Gavin Gwynne. A second World Title shot is within touching distance for Tennyson if he defeats O’Reilly in their WBA Lightweight World Title Eliminator, but Tennyson isn’t writing off his opponent, acknowledging that he has a strong track record and plenty to fight for. “This is a big step forward, a World Title Eliminator,” said Tennyson. “It can open some doors and opportunities for me. I know I can mix it with those guys. I want the opportunities with the big names.

9

“I WANT THE OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE BIG NAMES” “I haven’t watched too much of O’Reilly. Tony (Dunlop) is happy with how training is going. We’re very confident of getting the win on Friday. He’s ranked above me. It’s a must win. It’s just about winning, whether or not it looks good. “He’s 16 and 0, and holds two Titles, the IBA Intercontinental Lightweight Title and NABA Lightweight Title. He’s very confident and clearly, he’s here to win. It’s his

10

big opportunity, it’s not one I can take lightly with the rewards at the end of it. “I’m very highly motivated. I haven’t stopped thinking about a World Title. Fighting at that level is where I want to be. I’m working very hard to get myself into that position again. It’s a stage of boxing I’ve wanted to get back at. I want to bring big fights back to Belfast. It’s a dream. It’s one I’m getting closer to.” ■

SEIZING AN

OPPORTUNITY

J

osh O’Reilly believes he has what it takes to stop James Tennyson’s destructive run of form as the Lightweights prepare to collide in an Eliminator for the WBA Lightweight World Title. O’Reilly (16-0, 6 KOs) is undefeated in 16 fights since turning professional in July 2014, and the 29-year-old Canadian holds the North American Boxing Association Lightweight Title and a top ten ranking with the WBA. Having looked into Tennyson’s previous fights, O’Reilly knows he cannot afford to come into the ring with anything less than top form, and the Ontario man is confident of taking a step closer to a dream World Title shot of his own this evening. “I’m super excited,” said O’Reilly. “I’ve never been on a stage like this. It’s awesome to get this opportunity. I’m happy to be sharing the ring with James, I think it’s going to be a great fight and I’m looking forward to it. “He really likes guys to sit in front of him, so you’ve got to keep him off balance, lots of lateral movement. Some do well but expend a lot of energy and he catches up with them. You have to mix it up, lateral

12

DECEMBER 04 2020

movement and space. “I’ve got to be sharp and switched on. The plan is to not get caught up in anything crazy early and pick my shots to slow him down. There are things you see, there’s a lot I can take away from all his fights. There’s a lot of things from the outside that might seem different when I’m in there. “I’m a fan, I like watching the kid. I’ve seen him enough and I think there’s a lot of stuff I can do in there to negate a lot of the stuff he does. I’ve got my own plan on what’s going to happen, it’s just about executing it. I’ve watched him for a while. I’ve paid attention to him, seen some of his older fights.

SAUNDERS VS MURRAY

“I’VE GOT TO BE SHARP AND SWITCHED ON” “He’s a strong kid, I might be a bigger guy than him, but he’s got the power. We’ve both got to make 135. Back home, there’s stuff to do like sell tickets, so it’s less stressful here. You can focus on the fight and do your training, focus on making the weight. I feel quite comfortable, it’s the easiest I’ve made weight for some time.” ■

ASSASSIN

hannon Courtenay will be looking to return to winning ways against Poland’s Dorota Norek after suffering the first loss of her professional career last time out at Fight Camp back in August. Courtenay’s unbeaten record was shattered as she was floored and defeated on points by Rachel Ball on the third helping of Matchroom’s behind closed doors events at their Essex HQ. Now campaigning at 118lbs, the Watford prospect says she has learnt a lot from her first loss and will look to showcase her improvements against 6-1 Norek. “I think there’s nerves with every fight, and coming off a loss I’ve got to prove myself now,” said Courtenay. “Pressure is a privilege. If there’s no pressure then nobody believes in you, so I’m taking it in my stride. “I’ve made the choice to move, so I’m now living in a hotel next to my camp. I’ve made a lot of sacrifices, but it’s paid off because I’m at 118llbs for the first time. It’s time to make a statement. “I think it would be easy for me to sit here now and say, ‘oh it’s fine’. I’ll be honest. I felt like the floor underneath me had been taken. I felt like my world was over. You’ve got to hit rock

bottom to come up again. “I will be the first to admit that I struggled at first. “My mental health struggled big time. I didn’t know what to do with myself. Now, with the camp I have just had, I’m physically in the best shape I’ve been in and I’m thinking: ‘It wasn’t just a blessing, it’s a lesson.’” “Now I’ve had that bitter taste of what a loss is like, I’m never going to taste it again. It’s made me more determined. Mentally and physically I’m a lot stronger. “When you get that sour taste of something being taken away from you, you never want to taste it again.” ■

oroto Norek arrives on these shores for the first time looking to inflict a second defeat on Watford Bantamweight prospect Shannon Courtenay. The Polish native turned professional in March 2018 with a comfortable points win against Sonia Klos before finishing the year with further points wins over Enerolisa De Leon and Wiktoria Sadej. She suffered her sole defeat in November 2019 when widely beaten in Russia by Fatima Dudieva, but responded well to her loss by stopping Roz Silyanova in the opening session in February 2020. The 31-year-old outpointed Aleksandra Jaworska last time out in her home country and heads into her showdown with Courtenay full of confidence. “I am very grateful to Eddie Hearn and Matchroom for the opportunity to be here and to participate in such a big event,” said Norek at Wednesday’s press conference. “I love to fight. I’m a fan of Shannon’s. I’ve watched a lot of her fights and I know this will deliver for the fans. I come from the MMA background, so I’m not scared of big boxing gloves. I promise to show my full potential and my aggressive style. I’m here to win.” ■

ach Parker says he’ll deliver “what the fans want to see” when he takes on Cesar Nunez for the WBO International Super-Middleweight Title. The fighting pride of Derby, Parker has already dispatched in excellent fashion this year when he claimed an 11th round stoppage against Rohan Murdock, and now says he will deliver again. Should Parker claim victory, he’ll remain in line for the victor of Billy Joe Saunders vs. Martin Murray, the bout that tops the card. “The fans watch boxing because they want to see knockouts, and I deliver knockouts” said Parker, who weighed in at 167lbs at the official weigh in on Thursday. “2021 I’m looking at World Title shots, I’ve already said I’m after Billy Joe Saunders as he has the belt, but any of the World Champions in this division I’m looking at.” Parker then showed respect to Nunez, who is in his way before any World Title fight. “I know I have a job to do here, and Nunez is an experienced fighter who has got a big chance to show what he can do here. I can’t look past him, and I’m not, but

“FANS WANT TO SEE KNOCKOUTS, I’LL DELIVER” World Title talk motivates me. I can’t let him get in my way of becoming the best”. Parker’s promoter Nisse Sauerland says he can’t wait to see his charge in action again on Friday, describing Parker as a “knockout artist”. “He knocks people out, he’s unbelievable at it” said Sauerland. “He has this ability to end a fight, a perfect combination of speed, timing and power. “The future is really bright for Zach, but he’ll have to go to work tonight. He’s capable of stopping Nunez, but Nunez won’t make it easy for him. “He gets this job done, then we start having the exciting conversations about 2021, he’ll be Mandatory and we’ll make that fight happen.” ■

BAM-BAM S

pain’s Cesar Nunez is aiming to derail Zach Parker’s charge at the WBO SuperMiddleweight World Title held by tonight’s main event star Billy Joe Saunders. Parker holds a number one ranking with the WBO and plans on securing a shot at the undefeated two-weight World Champion. ‘Bam-Bam’ has World Title dreams of his own and knows that he can leapfrog the Derby fighter in the rankings by claiming the vacant WBO International Title. “First and foremost, I would like to thank Matchroom and Sauerland for the opportunity. I’m coming to take this chance and win on Friday night.

“I’M COMING TO TAKE THIS CHANCE”

“Zach is a strong fighter and has many strengths, but I have the experience over him, and I will show it on the night. “I know he has plans of fighting the winner of tonight’s main event for the WBO World Title, but after I beat him, I will take that shot for myself. “I’ve trained hard for this fight and I’m going to give the best account of myself possible. Opportunities like this don’t come often so it’s up to me to make it count.” ■

O

ne of Matchroom’s most recent signings and one of the hottest prospects in a thriving Super-Middleweight division, Lerrone Richards fights for the first time in 2020 looking to hit the ground running in what he has described as the “next chapter” of his professional journey. Richards, who is trained by Dave Coldwell alongside Matchroom stablemates Jordan Gill and Hopey Price, has recently vacated his British and Commonwealth Titles to lock his sights on European honours in 2021. Having been ringside for Conor Benn’s clash with Sebastian Formella, Richards has had a dry run of what is to be expected when he makes his first ring walk under the Matchroom banner at The SSE Arena, Wembley. “I’m very happy and excited to make my Matchroom debut, Let’s go! There’s no pressure, I just need to do Lerrone Richards. “I’m inspired by the great Muhammad Ali, hence the yellow and black shorts. Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee, hit and not get hit, I can take care of

“THIS IS THE NEXT CHAPTER!” myself in the ring. “Like I always say, it’s all about the skills. Tonight, you’re going to see that. Timo is a tough competitor. I’m taking him very seriously as he’s got a lot of experience but I’m going to do a job. “My short-term goal is to get out as much as possible and showcase my skills. Then I want to conquer Europe. After I’ve done that, I want those World Titles and those big fights. I feel like now I’m working with Eddie Hearn; I’ll get the right promotion and I’ll be able to build my profile. “There are so many fights out there that I can really get my teeth into. I want to show the world what I’m capable of doing. I’m ranked in the top 15 in the world with the WBO. There are other governing bodies as well, that I would like to get highly ranked in to chase these champions. “I wanted a fresh start in my career and tonight it begins. This is the next chapter!” ■

inland’s Timo Laine heads into his 43rd professional outing and having only been stopped four times in his 14 defeats, promises to be a stern test for one of Matchroom’s latest recruits, Lerrone Richards. Born in Isoioki but residing in Finnish capital, Helsinki, Laine’s career-best night came in just his sixth pro bout when he became Finnish Middleweight Champion. He has faced British opposition before in the shape of former British Middleweight ruler, Tommy Langford. Following the Langford defeat, Laine was thrust back into title action in early 2018 when competing for the WBA International belt, halted in seven by the excellent Fedor Chudinov. Aware that Richards is on the cusp of the big fights, a win in the most uncertain of times for the Finnish puncher could set him up for a big 2021, but he faces an uphill challenge to become the first man to beat the skilful Richards as a pro. “It’s going to be a hard challenge for me,” said Laine. “I’ve seen a couple of Lerrone’s fights and he looks really skilful. I want to say thanks to Eddie Hearn and Matchroom for this opportunity. “When the fight starts I have to get going straight away. It’s eight rounds and I have to be fast.” ■

ewis Edmondson comes into tonight’s bout fresh from victory having earned a shutout points victory over Scott Williams last month. Now 3-0 as a professional, ‘The Saint’ takes a leap up in level against John Telford who has far more experience in the paid ranks, but the 25-year-old is confident this is his big opportunity to impress under the bright lights of The SSE Arena, Wembley. Having won National Titles and boxed for England as an amateur, the Super-Middleweight is now guided by WBO King Billy Joe Saunders as he continues his pro journey. “I feel like I’m ready to move forward in my career now,” said Edmondson. “I feel like I did well as an amateur but now it’s time to take the leap. “I won National Titles and boxed for England and I feel like that has helped me settle in to life as a pro. “I’ve got great fighters training alongside me like Billy Joe Saunders and a great team around me who I learn from every day. “I’m looking to move forwards fast. I’ve seen a little bit of John and know what he brings but I’m 25 now and I don’t want to wait around too long, I want to get in the mix, starting tonight!” ■

THE TEFLON

JOHN

H

aving been hit with huge disappointment after his scheduled fight on the Ultimate Boxxer show fell through on the day of the weigh-in due to his opponent testing positive for COVID-19, John Telford got the call to step in and fight on the big stage, a turn of events he has described as fate. As a professional, the Flixton man has won 11 of his 14 outings, losing two and drawing one since making his debut in the summer of 2016. He fell just short when fighting for his first professional Title, losing a narrow points decision over ten rounds against Jack Kilgannon for the Central Area Middleweight crown. Despite being up at 168lbs, Telford is not here to make up the numbers and is instead coming to upset the applecart by defeating rising prospect Lewis Edmondson. “It’s a big opportunity for myself,” said Telford. “We only got a week’s notice, but we were already training to box three weeks ago on the Ultimate Boxxer show. That fell through because of my opponent testing positive for COVID so taking this fight was an easy decision for me. “We had a couple of days off then had a call that very weekend asking if we’d be interested on boxing on a Matchroom show. I jumped at the chance! “I’ve had a quick look at Lewis, he seems good at what he does. There’s not a lot to look at in his professional career having only had three fights. “We’ve seen what he did as an amateur, let’s see how it stands him on the night. Good on him for jumping straight up, there needs to be a lot more of that in the sport now.” ■

aving made a perfect start to life as a professional, Sheffield’s Donte Dixon fights on the undercard of his mentor Billy Joe Saunders for the first time tonight. The 20-year-old has won all four of his professional bouts with three victories coming inside the scheduled four round distances. This evening, he steps up to fight in his first six rounder against his toughest opponent to date, a challenge he is relishing, and promises will bring out the best in him. “I’m looking forward to it and I’m ready to go,” said Dixon. “This is another tough opponent in Angelo Dragone and for me, the better they are, the better I’m going to perform. I like that it’s going to be a tough one. I’m happy with my progress right now. “I’ve sparred a lot of these domestic level guys and I hold my own against them, right now I’m on the right track and I’m buzzing to be boxing again on this platform. When we get those fights in the future, I’ll do well against the tougher names and I can’t wait to prove that!” Dixon has been ready and waiting for this opportunity since halting experienced journeyman Jose Aguilar in two rounds back in March, and has used the unprecedented times

during the pandemic to put in extra hours in the gym. “I’m looking forward to it and I’m ready to go. All through training everything has gone well. All of my road work has been done and all of my work in the gym has been done. I just can’t wait to fight now. “Billy always gets on to Eddie about me and that’s good, I kind of like it because he wants me to get out there, so he gives me these opportunities, he has my best interests at heart. He knows I can perform, and I look forward to putting on a good performance on Friday, I’ll win this fight in style!” ■

THE ITALIAN

STALLION C

armarthen’s Angelo Dragone arrives in London looking to assert himself on the big stage, having taken this opportunity to face highly rated prospect Donte Dixon. A former milkman of ten years, Dragone has sacrificed his life for the sport and has described it as a dream come true to be on this platform. Despite falling short in a Welsh Area Super-Featherweight Title shot last time out, Dragone is motivated to make his kids and family proud. The Italian Stallion is targeting Titles in the sport, making tonight’s clash with Dixon a must win. “100% I’m ready for this. I’ve trained really hard, we had a six-week training camp and I’ve trained twice a day every day. “I’d just like to thank Matchroom for the opportunity. We’ve seen some upsets over the last few weeks and there’s going to be another upset on Friday night. I’m ready to go. I’m a 30-year-old man, he’s younger, a 20-year-old. All the hype is around him. “I’m an experienced man, I’ve been involved in Title fights on live TV. I’ve been there and I’ve done it. Let’s see if he can beat The Stallion. I’ll be on him from the first round to the sixth round. I’m going to set a fast pace, I’m always in battles. I’m going to give 100% to get the win.” ■
