PHIL WALLACE
ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Grimsby Town. Our visit to Harrogate went to plan with the team set up to end the run of defeats we’d had and we came away with a point, as expected. Harrogate have been together for a while and we’re a new squad, with new management. That togetherness is an important part of winning and, whilst we understand that we have to be patient, we are all working hard to get us back to where we want to be - winning. Our opponents today have had a not dissimilar start to us with 2 wins and 2 draws, compared to our 1 win and 3 draws so both sides will be looking to get a win today to start moving up the table. This week saw a number of pointers addressing the most important subject of the moment; how will lower league clubs survive playing games and paying footballers and staff, with no income from crowds. As far as we’re concerned the government mandated the Premier League to take care of EFL clubs as a condition of Project Restart. They’ve made 2 offers and both have been rejected – not surprising when the latest (increased) one was for £20m of grants and £30m in loans for the 48 clubs across Leagues 1 and 2 only. When you view that against the figure the EFL have said is needed - £250m for the 3 divisions – it shows how far off we are. It’s also worth noting that EFL clubs voted this down and said they would not consider a solution which excluded the Championship, demonstrating a solidarity that hasn’t always been there. Fast forward to now and the letter from Rick Parry to the DCMS this week showing his anger and frustration at the EFL being left to fend for themselves. Rick’s letter has been made public and there are now all sorts of opinions on whether that letter
www.stevenagefc.com
was the right approach – my view is that you can only tread softly for so long. If nobody is listening, you have to make them listen. There is too much at stake to take a long time to sort this out. As a Club we are losing £30,000 a week paying players and keeping our Club operating. Others will be losing much more than that. This is money that has gone to money heaven – it’s not coming back and therefore talk of loans are pointless, unless they are structured over 10 to 15 years. Clubs weren’t making profits to repay loans before this epidemic and, although the salary and squad cap will help put that right, it’s had no time to kick in yet. We’re in for a very tough month or so. Personally, I can easily see football having to close down for a few months, but we’ll keep going as long as we can – or until the money runs out! Back to the game – let’s all get behind the lads and start posting a few wins in November.

t has to be one for the record books but Boro can’t have played the same team three times in just 11 days, with three very different results! This happened 20 years ago today when Boro completed their treble of games against fellow Conference side Nuneaton Borough. After a 3-0 league romp on October 20, a Richard Leadbeater goal was enough to
earn a replay eight days later when they drew 1-1 at Nuneaton in front of 1,554 in the FA Cup 4th qualifying round. Preparing for home success and a place in the first round, Boro came a cropper in a close fought replay and despite a goal from Robin Trott just four minutes before the break, a Broadhall Way crowd of 1,219 saw them make their exit with a 2-1 defeat. f you have been keeping up to date with news from SFC Foundation, you may already know about the extensive work we have been doing over the past few months at trying to engage with older adults in our community who may be lonely or isolated. We have been fortunate enough to access government funding through the EFL Trust to expand what we do in this area and we are excited to share the news about more activities we are running. This week saw the start of our ‘Club Cuppa’, a virtual session for over 60’s to be able to chat and socialise with other Stevenage FC supporters about the match that has just been played. We had a strong first session led by the
www.stevenagefc.com
Club’s Supporters Liaison Officer, Matt Gray with fantastic feedback about the initiative. We are looking forward to hosting more of these sessions over Zoom on Mondays at 11am and offer that opportunity to chat in a safe place. If you are over 60 and would like to join in our next ‘Club Cuppa’, please email chat@stevenagefc.com for more details. We have also been busy putting together more activity packs for adults which are free to access and contain a variety of activities, games and recipes that can all be done at home. If you would like to download a free pack, please CLICK HERE and follow the questions that appear. Keep an eye out for new packs in November and December too! #TacklingLonelinessTogether

n Sunday we were away to Cambridge City, as always there’s never an easy game in the WNL South East Division and this game was
no different. We started the game quite well and after having a goal disallowed for offside we managed to get one that stood. A really decent passage of play ended with Becky Shephard finding the bottom corner with a left foot shot. We seemed to take our foot off the gas and Cambridge came back into it hitting the woodwork and our keeper Tèa Oldroyd made a decent save keeping us one up. Unfortunately we then conceded a penalty close to half time so went in at the break 1-1. Most of Cambridge’s chances were coming from our own doing so that was something we needed to do better in the second half but this didn’t go to plan at all, we didn’t keep the ball well enough
and along with individual mistakes we gifted Cambridge two goals which made it 3-1. At this point we were only able to create half chances with both Emily Schofield and Amy Josland having efforts at goal, but not being able to get the second and Cambridge finished the game with a fourth in stoppage time. Another week that we have seen glimpses of things that were good but as whole we all knew it wasn’t good enough, especially as we were well in the game at half time. We need to look at ourselves and our own performances and to try to start picking up points, which I have no doubt we will start to do, but we will need to improve looking at this performance. As always we thank everyone for their continued support. MARK DICKER - First Team Manager

ACADEMY Welcome again to digital life and the academy update. Firstly, best of luck to the gaffer and the team in this afternoon’s fixture v Grimsby Town FC. Hopefully, we can build on the resilient performance against Harrogate from Tuesday. During recent U18 fixtures we have started earlier than ever with bringing through our U16 players. This has enabled us to send some players on their way to experience what senior football is like at Step 4. Last Saturday, I got to watch our captain Sam Dreyer and midfielder Alfie Williams beat Southern League Div 1 leaders Aylesbury United whilst on work experience at Biggleswade FC, a club we built a strong rapport with during the season 19/20 with their manager Dave Northfield. When we arrange loan/work experience deals for our young players, we try to ensure we pick the right type of club that will help educate our players. Dave along with his staff really helped Joe Leslie last year, and their philosophy, style and ambition fits nicely with ours, so it was a no brainer and both players have settled in well. Both scored to send Biggleswade on their way to all 3 points.
www.stevenagefc.com
A great start for them both! As you may be aware, there are plenty of COVID restrictions and protocols in which clubs now must abide by and with Amy Ganderton & Deanne Goring leading this, our match day and training protocol got a positive thumbs up following a recent EFL visit. A few welcomes to the academy; our new Lead Physio Matteo Brunelli has joined who last year worked in China for the Chinese Olympic Committee, and former player Jamal Campbell-Ryce who joins us as the Foundation Phase lead, there is no doubt that both of their valuable experience and knowledge of the game will help all departments in the academy, and they have already made positive contributions. The academy is delighted that another scholar Mackye Townsend-West has signed his first professional contract. Finally, we host Colchester in the FA Youth Cup at the Lamex Stadium at 2pm on Wednesday 4th November. Hopefully, we can repeat the same result as the 2018/19 season. Enjoy the game! WELCOME
CLUB MATTERS Grimsby have had a turbulent last decade which began in 2010 with their first relegation from the Football League set-up in almost a century. The Mariners finally returned in 2016 when they won in the play-offs to secure their place back and in the next three years finished 14th, 17th and 18th in Division Two. It has been a mixed start for Grimsby who ended last season in 15th place on the points per game (PPG) method. This campaign began with an EFL Cup exit at the hands of Morecambe when

the visitors won 4-3 on penalties after the game had been drawn 1-1. In the league the Mariners recorded two straight defeats to start with, a 1-0 defeat at Walsall and a 4-0 thumping at home to Salford. After steadying the ship with a goalless draw at Bolton, Grimsby won twice away from home with creditable wins at Cheltenham and Leyton Orient. Since then however Grimsby have remained at the wrong half of the table with two defeats and a draw leaving them in 19th place, just two points ahead of Boro. On Tuesday evening they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Forest Green when a 24th minute strike proved enough.
THE BOSS Ian Holloway is the vastly experienced manager and club director at Grimsby. ‘Ollie’ as he is affectionately known, took the reins in December 2019 and along with his managerial role took a shareholding in the club. Following a playing career from 1980-
1999 which included three spells at Bristol Rovers and more than 100 appearances at QPR, Holloway made almost 600 appearances in the senior game before starting his managerial career at The Gas in 1996. He has since gone on to manage a total of nine clubs including Plymouth, QPR, Blackpool and Crystal Palace.
WATCH OUT FOR Matt Pollock is a 19 year-old who is forming a strong partnership with Luke Waterfall at the heart of the Mariners defence. Having started his career at Leeds, Pollock moved to Grimsby two years ago and has made six starts this season. The son of former Man City player Jamie Pollock, Matt has already shown an eye for goal with a dramatic volley to earn a point in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Carlisle.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS
GRIMSBY With the Mariners in town this weekend, I was hoping to catch up with Kristine Green who is one of their most prominent fans as well as one-time short-lister as the Supporters’ Liaison Officer (SLO) of the year. Kristine is a high-ranking board member of the Football Supporters’ Association as well as being a delegate to the National Council. If anyone ensures the voice of Grimsby’s fans gets heard on the largest platform there is, then Kristine deserves the accolade. Shame she couldn’t come to the Lamex this afternoon.
FOOTBALL HERITAGE The Football Supporters Association is part-sponsoring an online “Celebrating our Football Heritage” workshop next Wednesday November 4th from 10:00am to 12:00pm. The aim of the event is to bring together people with an interest in footballs’ history and heritage, to hear about the work of individuals and organisations within the game, and to discuss how to shape this crucially valuable area of interest. Interested? Let me know at lloyd@sfcsa.co.uk and I’ll forward you the details to register.
STEVENAGE LEGENDS Saturday March 28th 2020 was a day I was so looking forward to. We were due to be at home to Scunthorpe and the club had designated it as “Legends Day”, where all ex-players were to be our guests of honour for the day. In anticipation of the event, I managed to contact a number of the old Stevenage Town team from the mid-1960’s, comprising the likes of Delvin Stevens,
www.stevenagefc.com
John Mills, John Hiner, Ray Peacock, Dick England and Robin Chandler. From early Stevenage Athletic days, Peter Bowstead and John Harley also agreed to come. Sadly, Coronavirus put the kybosh on that initiative. Hopefully, the club might be able to resurrect the idea again in the future, but it has allowed me to compose a database of contact details for those who “wore the shirt” for Stevenage - be it “The Stripes” or “The Boro”. Help wanted: If you have the details of any ex-player who might like to reengage, then I’d love to hear from them. Contact me lloyd@sfcsa.co.uk
