CHIEF EXECUTIVE

ALEX TUNBRIDGE

G

ood afternoon and welcome to today’s opening Sky Bet League Two fixture against Barrow AFC and a warm welcome to their players, officials & supporters who have made the long journey. Today is a day which many of us have felt has been a long time coming, the start of the new season against a far more positive backdrop where COVID restrictions have been relaxed and supporters are finally back on the terraces. A lot has happened since our last proper home game against Salford City in February 2020; on the pitch Revs and his staff have transformed our footballing performances, installed pride back into the badge and have created a fantastic platform for which we can compete from this season. Off the pitch we have embedded ourselves further into the Heart of the community, developed our commercial engagement and gained a reputation for doing things differently. It is however, the work which the staff, players and supporters carried out last

www.stevenagefc.com

March at the start of the pandemic in conjunction with Stevenage FC Foundation which we believe has been the catalyst for change. From adversity came a collective effort to deliver our Community Careline which saw over 15,000 sandwiches delivered to residents in need, as well as workers at the Lister Hospital. Additional services also included a prescription collection and food bank services, alongside a support chat line which is still in operation. Today we welcome both the residents and volunteers from the scheme, as well as staff from the Lister Hospital and Sainsbury’s Poplars who kindly supported the service. The groups will be recognised ahead of kick off including some residents in their 90’s who will be attending their first ever football game, please join us in showing our thanks for a truly outstanding collective effort. Back to today’s game, enjoy every moment it has been a long time coming. Spare a moment to remember those who have been affected by the pandemic and those we have lost, but most of all be the 12th man for Revs and his team.

Stevenage Football Club is delighted to invite over 400 Coronavirus Community Careline users, volunteers, and staff to Saturday’s first game of the season… A letter from Stevenage FC Chief Executive Alex Tunbridge has been sent to each Careline user, volunteer and staff member, offering two free tickets to Saturday’s opening day of the league season vs Barrow AFC in recognition of their fantastic work during the pandemic. In addition to the ticket offering, each Coronavirus Community Careline volunteer is invited onto the pitch ahead of kick-off, giving supporters the chance to show their appreciation for the time and effort put in over those trying and testing few months. After the moment’s appreciation, volunteers will then deliver their final sandwich to Careline recipients seated in the North Stand.

as this the moment when Boro’s dream of a place in the Football League became a reality? With six wins from eight since the start of the year, the home side were in a rich vein of form and this 4-0 romp over Barrow saw them cast aside the challenge of previous table-toppers Oxford United and go to the top of the Blue Square Premier. Yemi Odubade was the man to thank for the three points as he grabbed a hat-trick

in this impressive performance. His first came on 28 minutes, and Boro looked to have sealed the win just before the break when Scott Laird added the second. Odubade scored his second and Boro’s third on the hour mark and he then added another to put the icing on the cake. The win was Boro’s fourth in a row and saw them score 13 goals in that time without conceding. They were to win their next four in the league before Luton came to town and set the nerves jangling… DARREN ISTED CLICK BELOW TO CHECK OUT THE PROGRAMME

BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 06 AUGUST There’s always a buzz about the place on the first day of a brand-new season. This time around, however, it’s perhaps stronger than ever; the first time Boro’ fans have been back home – except for one December day last year – for nigh on 18 months! But, for those back on the terraces and in the stands, what previous do we have on this day in history? Well, we’ve always had the benefit of the home draw on this particular date. But that hasn’t always worked out for us; our three results to date on 6 August serving up a real mixed bag. It all started with a goalless draw at home to familiar foes Exeter City in 2011; a solid enough return for our first-ever appearance in the third tier of English football. Two seasons later, our stay in League One would ultimately come to an end. But we started the 20134 season with a bang by beating

16

Ipswich Town in the first round of what was then called the Capital One Cup. Our guests were playing a league above us in the Championship at the time – so we’re chalking that one down as yet another Boro’ cupset. As we said, however, 6 August has been a truly mixed bag and our 2016 Sky Bet League Two match at home to Crewe Alexandra completes the set. Jamie Jones had to be on top form in the Boro’ goal to keep the Railwaymen at bay. But two second half goals proved our undoing. Charlie Lee’s 94th minute consolation was too little, too late… So, do we go back around to the start and expect a 0-0 draw in 2021? Or can we break the mould and grab the win? 2011

YOU AGAIN? BARROW For the second season in succession, we open up our account for the new league season with a game against Barrow. Luckily for us, this time around, we’re not making the long trip – they are. And we’ll hope to score a repeat of a home fixture last term that saw us battle to a 2-1 win; thanks in no small part to Luke Norris’ late penalty. In all, Boro’ took four points off the Bluebirds last season; Inih Effiong’s late penalty at Holker Street nabbing us a draw. Those two results combined ensured that our head-to-head record against the Bluebirds is in relatively fine form. Since we first met back in 1998, we’ve won five out of nine – drawing two and losing, well, you can do the rest of the maths. It’s strangely common for us to encounter Barrow in August. Our 1998 away day was the first match of our Conference campaign that season (Carl Alford with the winner). And we were back up there

www.stevenagefc.com

in August 2008 and August 2009 too – albeit not on the first days of those respective seasons. In case you wondered, we won 3-1 and drew 0-0 respectively. So, the only thing that’s unusual about this season’s match is that we’re at home to Barrow in August – not away. Our home encounters, traditionally, take place during the second half of the season. With the exception of a duff 2-1 defeat in April 1999, we’re currently on a run of three straight home victories against our friends from the north. Add our head-to-head record into the mix and the signs suggest that Boro’ may be getting the season off to a good start. But we all know football doesn’t quite work like that!

ACADEMY

ood afternoon and welcome back, what a feeling is it to be able to have fans back in. For us, it’s slightly different, it’s nice for our parents to finally be able to watch their sons play after so long away. This morning we travel to AFC Wimbledon in our first league game in the South-East Youth alliance league. Fingers crossed, we can start off with three points and it sets the tone for victories today. This has been a challenging pre-season for me and Ronnie. We have had to deal with a few COVID cases which meant we had to close for a week. Thankfully our boys are back on the mend and there have been no further cases. Unfortunately, we did lose three fixtures which meant we are 270 minutes behind our schedule. But, thanks to the excellent work Dave Bass and Matteo Brunelli, we have been able to stay away from many injuries and we still look fit. We’ve had some interesting fixtures, for those that came to the Welwyn Garden City game, we had a disastrous opening 15 minutes and found ourselves 3-1 down. However, this group is a talented bunch and a group we have believed in for a number of years and we showed excellent resilience to come back and win 4-3. On Wednesday we competed in two fixtures. Our U17s taking on a U18s non-league side and coming out 3-0 winners, our U21 defeating Chatteris Town in a charity friendly 11-0. Although pre-season isn’t about winning, we have been delighted with the results but also the way we’ve played (apart from 15 minutes!). We have shown a real intensity and are determined to press and move the ball quick, something Ronnie and I have focused on during this preseason. Our first years have really settled well and

20

have shown strong promise as expected and our second years have returned in fine shape. I am also pleased to inform you that Steve Barker who was a voluntary intern for us last season has joined us in a full-time basis and Academy Lead Analyst. Steve has been invaluable and will continue to lead our apprentices Sporting Excellent Programme (SEP) projects to ensure they complete their education frameworks. We have several exciting fixtures coming up & one major update is we have Southend United in the U21 Premier League Cup. If we are victorious on Wednesday evening, 7pm at Wingate & Finchley, we will enter into a group with the likes of Stoke City, Colchester and Fulham. Exciting times for our junior professionals! This is evident of the progression we as an Academy have made within the last eighteen months despite our hardest challenges. Best of luck to the gaffer and his staff for this afternoon’s fixture and we really hope everyone enjoys being back in the ground. Stay safe. new season is nearly upon us and it has been a summer of change for Stevenage FCW as First Team Manager, Karl Davy shapes his squad for the start of the FA Women’s National League starting next weekend. Stevenage FCW kick off their season on Sunday 15 August 2021, with an away visit to newly promoted, QPR Women. In preparation for the start of the new season, there have been some player departures and fresh arrivals who, in addition to a number of retained players from last season, will add quality and depth to an already talented squad at Davy’s disposal. The first new player of the Karl Davy era was Hannah Nebbitt from Ashford Town. Nebbitt has slotted in to the SFCW side, playing a number of different positions in pre-seasons. Andie Dickens followed soon after from QPR and made an impressive debut post-season against MK Dons Development. Forward, Lily Bruno was the third signing and has continually impressed every time she has pulled on a Stevenage shirt. A constant thorn in defenders’ side, there is a lot expected from Bruno over the coming season. Our fourth signing was a significant coup, as SFCW pulled off the signing of wingback Ellie Gregg from Charlton Women. Gregg, who is an England Colleges

footballer has slotted into her role with ease and is never without a smile on her face. The final signing, so far, was the return of Stevenage girl and former SFCW captain, Amy Makewell from Enfield Town. Makewell spent a season away from SFCW but returns back in the red and white of Stevenage this season. A talented footballer and deadly striker, Davy’s side will be high scorers this coming season. The summer also saw the Stevenage Development side re-established as a brand new U23s team who will now be competing in the FAWNL Reserves Division, facing the likes of West Ham United’s and Watford’s reserve women’s sides. In addition to all the exciting changes around the women’s club, it was also a very proud moment for the Stevenage FC Foundation as the first ever graduate of the Girls Development Centre, Poppy Fletcher, signed for Stevenage FC Women. Poppy has been getting some vital experience in and around the first team throughout pre-season and has excelled in all the games she has featured in so far. We hope that the new 2021/22 season will have less disruptions and we very much look forward to welcoming all Stevenage fans to the Hertfordshire FA County Ground. Up the ‘Boro!

THE BOSS Mark Cooper followed in the footsteps of his father Terry, and made his way into the professional game with Bristol City before playing for Exeter and Birmingham. Fulham paid £40,000 to take him to Craven Cottage and he spent two years with the club. Spells at Huddersfield Town, Wycombe Wanderers, Hartlepool United, Leyton Orient, Rushden & Diamonds, Hednesford Town and Forest Green Rovers followed before he settled at Tamworth where he went on to take his first step into the world of coaching. He was then in charge at Kettering, Peterborough and Darlington and AFC Telford United before taking over as manager of Swindon in 2013. Following a brief stay at Notts County he decided against extending his stay at Meadow Lane in favour of an exciting project at Forest Green Rovers. Cooper spent five years at the Forest Green helm before parting company earlier this year with the club sitting sixth in the League Two table. Everyone associated with Stevenage FC wish to offer their sincere condolences to Mark on the death of his father, Terry, recently.

DID YOU KNOW?

ONE TO WATCH Experienced defender Mark Ellis joined Barrow in the summer of 2021 following his release from League Two rivals Tranmere Rovers. The centre-back, now club captain, had previously played under Bluebirds boss Mark Cooper at Forest Green Rovers. Ellis, who has more than 400 senior games under his belt, starred on loan at Notts County during the latter part of last term, scoring some crucial goals as the Meadow Lane outfit came close to promotion. The former Bolton Wanderers youngster made his name in his native Devon with Torquay United whom he helped win promotion to the Football League in 2008/09. After a short stay at Forest Green, he signed for Crewe Alexandra, before moving on to Shrewsbury Town in the summer of 2014. A couple of loan moves to Carlisle United paved the way for a permanent move to Brunton Park in 2016 before he worked under Cooper during a second loan stint at Forest Green. He spent time on loan at Leyton Orient before moving to Tranmere in July 2018.

•W hen Barrow lost their place in the Football League in 1972 it was partly to do with the strong case put by FA Cup heroes Hereford. Indeed both teams won 26 votes in the first ballot, Hereford claiming their place with a 29-20 vote win in the second ballot. • In season 1967-68 Barrow recorded their best campaign, finishing in 8th place in the third tier, their record W21-D8-L17-F65-A54-Pts50 • Barrow have played at their current home Holker Street since 1909 (their first match in the new home was a 5-2 win over Eccles Borough). On their founding in 1901 their first ground was ‘The Strawberry Ground’, their home until 1904 when they moved to Ainslie Street. A year later they set up camp at Little Park, Roose. • In January 1954, a crowd of 16,874 packed into Holker Street to watch Barrow draw 2-2 with Swansea Town in the third round of the FA Cup. Five years later and 16,340 saw Wolves beat Barrow 4-3, also in the FA Cup third round. In contrast just 143 were present for a game with South Liverpool in 1973. • After more than 25 years in nonleague Barrow claimed Wembley glory in 1990 when they won the FA Trophy with a 3-0 success against Leek Town. • The Barrow motto Spatiari ut Progrediaris mean ‘Strive in order to Progress’.

LATEST NEWS WELCOME BACK It’s so good to be able to compose a conventional SA page for the programme again. The pandemic restrictions contrived to suppress so much of what the SA usually undertakes that finding material for this article last season was nigh on impossible. There’s much to tell, but not enough space to do so today - so watch out for more news in the next programme.

INTER-CITY BORO The Boro Bus is back again, and how we’ve missed it. Next Saturday (August 14th) we’re off to Bristol Rovers. Who of you reading this will join us? Departing The Lamex at 11:00am, the cost is just £25 for members and £30 for non-members (concessions apply). Then, on the following Tuesday (17th), we’re off to Yorkshire to see the Bantams v the Boro. The bus for Bradford departs at 3:00pm and costs the same as the bus to Bristol. FAN FOCUS SCARLETT CLARK I am pleased to introduce Scarlett Clark to you this afternoon. Scarlett is 5 years old and attends the Bushmead Primary School in Luton. Scarlett wore her first Boro shirt at just 12 hours old and has been a season ticket holder ever since. Scarlett can usually be found in the North Stand, along with her dad and granddad and even though she is only 5 she’s been to almost 30 grounds around the country, following her favourite club. Scarlett is a big fan of Boro Bear and is affectionately known by many of the club staff, players and supporters alike. How would you know what the forthcoming match-day arrangements were? Basic stuff I know, but back in the day you would have been sent a postcard, like the one in the accompanying image. This example is actually for the Stevenage Town 2nd XI (or ‘Reserves’ as they would have been known). I confess that I’m not privy to the current arrangements at Stevenage today – but I could hazard a guess.

Somewhat overdue (!), the Supporters’ Association AGM is currently being afforded serious consideration and a venue is being negotiated. Likely to be held in October, actual details will be forwarded to members in due course as well as through our social media platforms and through the forum of the match-day programme. Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
