THE CHAIRMAN
G
PHIL WALLACE
ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Bolton Wanderers. Our draw after 90 minutes against Northampton on Tuesday night was satisfying in that we dominated a League One team – but not so satisfying in that we missed the chances created to win the game, once again. The plus point for me was the performance of Academy graduates Arthur Iontton and Jack Smith in central midfield. They dominated their opponents and their work rate and tenacity was a joy to watch. Our league position demands that we fight for our lives now. If we do that, then the wins will come and the confidence to win consistently will be there. It is, of course, much more complex than that but we’ve been beaten in 90 minutes just once in the last 6 games so if we keep doing the right things, results will hopefully change. We’ve got a fast and furious match calendar in front of us now. We’ve lost Jake Aitchison and Elliot Osborne through injury until next year, but we’re delighted with the recent addition of Tom Pett to our squad, a player of real quality that we know well. Football is a strange game, you can be in a black hole one week but a couple of wins takes you out and you can only see blue sky above. It also works the other way – clubs can be doing OK but the wheels fall off and they fall like a stone. We have to make sure that we start winning, become one of those clubs on an upwards trajectory and today would be a good time to start. Off the pitch, I seem to get a survey every week from the EFL about one thing or another, yet none of these provide a solution to the losses we are making week on week. The complete absence of income is hurting us badly and we are living right now off the solidarity payments for the whole season, which
www.stevenagefc.com
have been paid up front and the EFL loans taken. That’s great but what happens when this runs out, as it will before the end of the year? The fact that there is no acceptable offer from the Premier League, when they were mandated to address losses as part of Project Restart, is disappointing. The fact that we’re still talking about it in mid November – with not a penny paid or advanced – is completely unacceptable. Clubs in Leagues One and Two have been wholly supportive of the process, but our patience is being tested. The solution not only has to address the funds lost last season, but the losses incurred this season and I hope it comes sooner rather than later, before we start losing clubs. Back to the game. The lads can’t hear you but they know how much it means to get on a winning run. Strange times, in more ways than one.

n this day in 2015 Boro found themselves just three places and five points from the bottom two as rivals Luton came to town. The Teddy Sheringham experiment was coming to a close and Boro, who were without a win in six games, were looking to get one over on the Hatters who themselves sat on the edge of the play-off places. Players such as Chris Day, Ronnie Henry and Charlie Lee now seem like long past names, but they did battle for Boro in a

game which although without a goal, had plenty of thrills. The visitors had slightly the better of the game, but neither side showed a killer instinct in front of goal, Armand Gnanduillet missing the best effort in the first half for the hosts. There was even a bit of spice at the end as Paul Benson was sent off three minutes from time for a two-footed lunge, but this didn’t harm the Hatters too much and they played out the stalemate in front of a bumper crowd of 4,782. FOUNDATION On Wednesday 18th November, the Foundation in partnership with Stevenage Football Club opened the doors of the Broadhall Suite at The Lamex Stadium to assist with the collection of food and toys to support local causes during the winter months. Running on 11am - 2pm, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday each week initially until Thursday 28th January, the Drop Zone will act as an additional location for fans and local residents to make donations to key local causes including the Food Shed, Toy Shed, Stevenage Community Food Bank plus East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity (supporting Lister Hospital). The Donation Drop Zone will run alongside the Friendly Chat service, supporting local residents that want a friendly voice on the other end of the phone or need assistance during the winter months. As well as our commitment to provide thousands of activity packs to local school children, vulnerable adults, those in sheltered accommodation and patients at Lister Hospital in both the children’s and elderly care wards. Foundation CEO, Joe Goude said “When the second lockdown was announced, it was apparent that people in our local community were going to need some additional support. Throughout the year we’ve made some fantastic connections with some amazing organisations and we’re committed to supporting them with the campaigns they are running to address real local needs of some of our residents. After discussion with the Council and their Stevenage Helps initiative as well as other partners, including Lister Hospital, we want to make ourselves useful and assist in local efforts. Food poverty is incredibly high on that list and we
www.stevenagefc.com
hope that the Donation Drop Zone will encourage fans and residents that can, to donate items that we can collect and work with local food banks to ensure they get to the people that need them most. We are also asking people who feel they can, to donate new toys that we can give to families that are struggling and children that will be spending Christmas in Lister Hospital, to make their Christmas period that bit more special. These do not need to be big items but just something that a local child can open at Christmas. As always, we’re grateful for the incredible support our community and the club’s fanbase shows us during these difficult periods and everyone here at the Foundation and Club are grateful for any support that can be given to these local causes”. The Donation Drop Zone will open in the Broadhall Suite at The Lamex Stadium (SG2 8RH) and we ask that people travel alone to make donations. CLICK HERE to see a full list of accepted items. Our Friendly Chat service is open Monday - Friday from 10am - 4pm. Activity Packs for local residents will also be available to download from Friday 20th November and new versions will be released every two weeks until the end of January.

ACADEMY Since I last wrote programme notes we have once again been in lockdown as an Academy at schoolboy level but still operational at U18. Recent games have not been kind to us in terms of results and from the outside looking in it would appear we are struggling. However, we know the process we are on, the slight changes we are making and the different demands we are making of our players and are very confident the long term benefits will far outweigh the short term pain. The one problem all Academy coaches face is that invariably they are always coaching for the future so rarely get to see the fruits of their labour in front of them. The work going in across the Academy from U7-U18 is at times breathtaking. The work ethic, desire to improve and attention to detail in order to give every player the best opportunity will always go unnoticed but I’m really proud to lead a group of staff that have the player at the centre of everything they do and never shy away or shirk responsibility to continually raise the bar for the players. It’s that mindset that we are imprinting on our scholars at the moment. Be brave,
www.stevenagefc.com
take ownership, demand more, risk take, trust yourself and others so you can be trusted - all things that have an effect on performance and results. Our recent game v Northampton typifies where we are at. We were so brave on the ball, receiving in tight, defensively dangerous areas but continually trusting each other to play their way out so that when bigger challenges come they have a strong mindset and have faced that situation a million times. At times they got it wrong but what was so impressive was the fact they never shied away once from the philosophy. A 5-1 defeat consisted of 4 set piece goals. These are really important messages to the players. They have to be excellent in both boxes in order to be a pro and be trusted by the 1st team manager and they can’t ignore that fact however they play, their ability to retain the ball and make progress up the pitch was so pleasing. If we can add that strong mindset and become excellent in both boxes during their time as scholars to align with their technical ability we should have an excellent batch of young players coming through. WELCOME
CLUB MATTERS Boro entertaining Bolton is a fixture not many would have imagined just a few years ago. Founded in 1877, Wanderers have the distinction of being one of the 12 founder members of the Football League which was formed in 1888. And they tasted success in the following years, claiming the first of three FA Cups in the 1920s with the ‘White Horse’ final and a 2-0 win over West Ham in 1923, the first final held at the old Wembley. For the next 30 years Bolton proved to be a major force in the top flight

and with stars such as Nat Lofthouse they were always challenging for success, although in that time they never managed to win the league, and only added to their FA Cup haul with a win in 1958. Indeed arguably their most famous moment came in defeat when they let a 3-1 lead slip to Blackpool who won 4-3 in the 1953 ‘Matthews Final.’ Wanderers saw their impact on the football world reduced and by 1987 they had been relegated to the Fourth Division (equivalent of our current EFL Division Two) for the first time in their history. This only lasted a season however and in 1995 a play-off win at Wembley saw them in the newly formed Premiership. Despite moving from Burnden Park to the Reebok stadium in 1997, Bolton failed to put down roots in the top flight and it wasn’t until 2001 that they began an 11 year tenure at the pinnacle of the game. Since that time it has been a turbulent period for the Trotters, massive debt, winding up orders and changes of ownership leading to the club going into administration in May of last year.
A points deduction and poor start to the 2019-20 season meant that when it finished early they were relegated in bottom place due to the points per game (PPG) method. Bolton are battling to find their feet in League Two, starting the campaign with five straight defeats, although wins at Harrogate and more recently at home to Bradford and Salford have moved them up the table.
THE BOSS Ian Evatt was appointed manager on July 1, 2020, joining from Barrow where he had spent two years building up an impressive reputation, seeing the Holker Street side promoted to the Football League with an impressive win ratio of 44%. With a playing career which began in 1999 and included Chesterfield, Derby and Blackpool, Evatt, who had converted from central midfield to central defence, moved into management just two years ago as caretaker with the Spireites.
WATCH OUT FOR
Nathan Delfouneso: The 29-yearold Birmingham born striker spent his formative years at Aston Villa, his six campaigns with the Villans included him becoming their youngest player to make a European appearance when he came on as sub in the UEFA Cup against FH Hafnarfjaroar. Further spells included Blackburn, Leicester and Coventry before his move to Blackpool three years ago which led to 24 goals in 125 appearances. He moved to Wanderers in August this year and has already shown a way to goal, scoring five, including in the wins over Harrogate and Bradford.

COMMERCIAL As with every Club in the land, we’ve been starved of a vital income stream, after all, who wants to sponsor a match they can’t attend, hire an executive box they can’t access or sponsor a match ball that nobody will see? But we are ready for business. As soon as we’re allowed to reopen we will be there for you. Hopefully this current set of restrictions will have the desired effect and infection numbers will fall significantly
enough for us to be allowed to restart, most likely with a limited service similar to what was offered for the recent game against Grimsby Town with around 100 people being admitted to the North Stand, before a more general opening of the stadium as time goes on. SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS
In my previous programme notes, I mentioned that the occasion was the very first time we had ever played against our opponents (Concord Rangers). It was actually the first time that we had played new opposition in a quite a while. Today, we welcome Bolton Wanderers to The Lamex for the very first time too. Next Sunday, another new opponent comes to town - Hull City! Like the proverbial bus, you wait and wait, and all of a sudden, three come along at once. Fantastic to have Bolton here this afternoon - such a pity we can’t welcome their supporters too. Speaking of the Wanderers’ supporters, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that there are a number of groups that accommodate the needs of Bolton fans - everywhere! Apart from the independent Bolton Wanderers Supporters Trust, there are also dedicated Wanderers’ fans groups based in London, Lancaster, Scotland and Norway. That’s quite some coverage.
APFCSIL Bolton’s London-based fans group are also members of the Association of Provincial Football Supporters’ Clubs in London, or APFCSIL for short. Started in the mid-1970’s, this organisation caters (mostly) for exiled fans who live/ work in London and hanker for the community of kindred like-minded spirits who share the same passions for their respective clubs. Principally a social network, APFCSIL arranges quiz nights, pool and darts competitions for fans representing their clubs. They even have a Sunday morning

football league which allows members to wear their team’s kit and represent their club in their new adopted city. Unsurprisingly, Stevenage are not represented, but the likes of Hearts, Sheffield Wednesday, Notts Forest, West Brom and Burnley most certainly are!
THE GAME OF OUR LIVES A new initiative has recently been launched by the National Football Museum (NFM). This enterprise encourages fans from across the country to share their personal memories of the beautiful game as part of their Game of our Lives campaign. Do you remember your very first journey to the match? Were you there in the stands for one of Stevenage’s big moments? Why does football matter so much to you? It is the first time in history that so many in the football community are being asked to directly contribute to and get involved in a permanent fan-led collection at the museum. What the museum is particularly looking for is: Stories: What makes football the game of your life? How does it make you feel? Why is it so important to you? Photos: In the stand or on the pitch. The NFM would love to see snaps that encapsulate your relationship with the game. Videos: Short video clips on your special football moment. Do check out the NFM’s website CLICK HERE for more details. LLOYD BRISCOE SA Chairman
