THE CHAIRMAN
PHIL WALLACE
G
ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Bradford City. We are in the process of changing so many parts of our Club right now and all of them are designed to make us stronger on the pitch. The fact that we’re 2nd in the table over the last 10 games and 7th over the last 25 games is as accurate a picture of our progress as you could hope to have. These are facts, not subjective views and we are absolutely going in the right direction. This progress is entirely due to our management team and the players we have with us now. The changes we made in the January window - effectively replacing players from the National League with experienced EFL players – was brilliantly executed by those involved and has stood us in good stead. But it doesn’t stop there because it’s the improvement in the squad since then which is clear to see and that’s down to coaching and management. Now we have the train on the right track and now we’re getting close to normality, we are starting to look at everything around
www.stevenagefc.com
the Club that we can improve – meals, gym equipment, training pitches and other key parts of a player’s daily involvement to improve. These are all obvious points, but didn’t seem so obvious when we were facing financial Armageddon for pretty much the whole of 2020, nor in the previous year where it was clear that changes were required in our structure and fabric. So, we are where we are and, although the financial situation is still uncertain, we now have the confidence needed in this management team to start to invest slowly and carefully in infrastructure to take us to where we want to go. Personally, I’m starting to really enjoy watching the team now. I like the players we have and the way we play, so it’s such a shame that you can’t all be with us in person at The Lamex. Hopefully, this will change next season and we can begin to enjoy every minute of watching live football together again. Enjoy the game!

VOTE FOR YOUR GCIS PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Stevenage supporters can now vote for their GCIS (UK) Ltd Player of the Month Award for March 2021. After a month which saw Alex Revell’s men play six, win four and draw two, to decide on just four players to nominate was a task in itself. With nine goals scored
6
and just two conceded, attacking prowess and defensive stability were key as Stevenage continued to climb the table. Our shortlist for the March Player of the Month is as follows: Chris Lines: After signing in January, Chris Lines has been one of the first names on the teamsheet ever since. Patrolling the centre of the park, the midfielder oozes class on the ball and continuously aids the team both offensively and defensively. Two assists vs Forest Green at the beginning of the month proved this. Tom Pett: Upon his return to The Lamex in November, Tom Pett & Stevenage were wrestling with the relegation zone as it looked a battle to climb the table. Now, under a new role in the centre of midfield with fellow nominee Chris Lines, Boro sit comfortably mid-table thanks to an upturn in form, and a month which saw Pett play every minute of every game and even bagged himself a goal vs Carlisle United. Elliott List: Another Player of the Month poll, another Elliott List nomination. Three goals in games against Forest Green, Harrogate and Barrow respectively earn last month’s winner a third nomination in a row. Luke Norris: Another January signing nomination, Luke Norris has had his best month in a Boro shirt so far. With two goals in four starts this month against Carlisle United and Barrow, Norris’ rekindled strike partnership with Elliott List from their time at Gillingham together has terrorised defences across the league in the recent results. To cast your vote for the GCIS Player of the Month, click here and remember, the vote closes on Tuesday 6th April at 12:30pm.

nd relax! With the 2021 vintage looking like it’s coming to a satisfactory conclusion, let’s sit back, light a cigar and raise a glass to possibly our greatest Easter Monday game, the 4-0 demolition of Woking 25 years ago. Boro went into this clash top of the table, based largely on a league and cup run which saw them unbeaten in 13 since January with 10 wins in that haul. But after three defeats from their past four games (including a shock FA Trophy

exit at Hyde United), table-toppers Boro really needed this over their massive rivals to get the title run truly back on track. And the home team did not disappoint in front of a bumper crowd of 3,976 in one of the great Broadhall Way occasions. With a side brimming full of legends it was goals from Sodje, Venables, Trebble and Hayles that saw the auld enemy well and truly humbled. Confidence booster? You know the rest, Boro remained unbeaten after this game and the title was theirs. DARREN ISTED

BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 05 APRIL April is very much the business end of the season and a lot of scores – ups and downs – are settled as the run-in starts to hot up. For Boro, our past results on 5 April leave us with a veritable smorgasbord of emotions to reflect on. We’ve seen some huge wins… and some crushing defeats. And, on each side of the coin, there were big implications. Let’s start with the positives and maybe one of our most important victories of our 2009-10 Blue Square Premier title-winning campaign. After a 1-0 home defeat to fierce rivals Luton on Saturday 3 April 2010, we went south of the river two days later to a tidy looking AFC Wimbledon side. A second successive defeat could’ve been disastrous. But it didn’t happen. Boro’ bounced back in style; oozing class in our 3-0 win. Our scorers that bank holiday afternoon weren’t your usual triumvirate (Mark Roberts, Lawrie Wilson and Eddie Odhiambo). But they got the job done and the title charge back on track. Three more wins later, it was signed, sealed and delivered. We had another big away win five years beforehand. With Boro pressing hard for the playoffs, a trip to Woking (of all places) threatened to be a banana skin. Aided by a wonderful Alan Julian save, however, we secured all three precious points. Even if it didn’t ultimately get us over the line, it’s still a win over Woking. And that’s something we couldn’t manage on this day in 1997. That’s because the FA Trophy semi-final draw took us to Kingfield in the first leg. At the time, we were two sides in our non-league pomp. And Boro’ were still hoping to nail the non-league double. Our 1-0 defeat wasn’t the end of the world. But our hopes did soon unravel on both fronts. Most recently on this day, we travelled to Shrewsbury Town in Sky Bet League One.
16
At the time, the Shrews were – like us – battling for survival. We really needed a huge result to give us any lingering hope of survival. Alas, the hosts won it by a single goal - despite finishing with 10 men. And it’d be the first of four straight defeats that confirmed our fate. 1983 Letchworth Garden City 3-0 Stevenage Borough, Woolwich Trophy 1997 Woking 1-0 Stevenage Borough, FA Trophy Semi Final First Leg 1999 Kettering Town 1-2 Stevenage Borough, Football Conference (Alford, Leadbeater) 2003 Stevenage Borough 3-1 Leigh RMI, Nationwide Conference (Elding 3) 2005 Woking 1-2 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Stamp, Elding) 2008 Stevenage Borough 0-1 Exeter City, Blue Square Premier 2010 AFC Wimbledon 0-3 Stevenage Borough, Blue Square Premier (Roberts, Wilson, Odhiambo) 2014 Shrewsbury Town 1-0 Stevenage, Sky Bet League One
Stevenage FC v Bradford City
YOU AGAIN? BRADFORD CITY Today, Boro meet the Bantams on home soil for the fourth time – taking our total tally of encounters to eight. Overall, it’s a head-tohead record that is currently coming down in favour of our guests; the Bantams winning four compared to our two. And, for us, here we have an opponent against whom we have a track record of letting half time leads slip. The first case in point was the return fixture earlier this season. Our bright start to the new season looked like it might continue after an Elliott List goal sent us in ahead at the break. But the Bantams rallied in the second half and turned it around to claim the win. It certainly knocked us off course too; Boro’ left waiting nearly two months for the next win. We’d also gone in ahead at Valley Parade
www.stevenagefc.com
last season too in one of our final fixtures before the season was aborted. A Charlie Carter strike put us in front, before a second half collapse piled on the relegation misery. Little did we know at the time how things would pan out over the next few months, however. It’s not all doom and gloom, though. In fact, it’s just over 10 years to the day that Bradford City first came to our place. A John Mousinho penalty and a late Darius Charles goal secured a 2-1 win; our sixth straight League Two victory as we closed in on the playoffs. Could our recent unbeaten run deliver a similar outcome in our latest Bantams battle?

This programme will take a well-rounded approach to give the learners the best possible set of skills to thrive in the workplace or move onto further education. Over the course of the 12 week traineeship, students will spend their time focused on 4 main areas; getting real life work experience in a local business, ‘Skills 4 Work’ a hand crafted course to make the learner aware of the talents they possess, functional skills in maths and english, and supplementary qualifications that will support them in any workplace. Traineeships are completely free and available to anyone aged 19-24 without

a full Level 3 Qualification, equivalent to 2 or more A levels. Potential trainees must also be unemployed or working less than 16 hours a week for the duration of the traineeship. The programme is limited to a small number of learners per cohort, meaning preregistering an interest is highly recommended. If this interests you or could be suitable for anyone you know, email aaron.cox@stevenagefcf.com to receive further information and officially preregister. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? I am 19 years old and currently studying to become a physiotherapist. I am a massive Arsenal fan and had a ball at my feet from a very young age. WHAT CLUBS HAVE YOU PREVIOUSLY PLAYED FOR? I played for Knebworth Youth FC from the age of 7 until I was 16 years old, then 1 season at Bedwell Rangers and then signed for Stevenage FC Women. WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL? Other than busy studying… Due to lockdown my social life is pretty dull to be honest, especially turning 18 as lockdown hit. But I’ve managed to keep myself busy! Before lockdown I would normally be out socialising with friends and family. HOW DO YOU FIND JUGGLING FOOTBALL, TRAINING AND YOUR DAY JOB? At the moment I am studying so I have a time plan around my study hours and my free time, so it doesn’t impact my football too much. But football does allows me to relieve any stress from uni. CAN YOU TELL ME WHO YOUR FOOTBALLING IDOL OR ROLE MODEL WAS WHILST GROWING UP AND WHY? Being an Arsenal fan and having season tickets from a young age I was lucky enough to watch many great players, but one that stood out was Robin Van Persie as he was left footed like me and scored some worldie goals. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE FEMALE FOOTBALLER AND WHY? I loved watching Alex Scott as a player at
24
Stevenage FC v Bradford City
Arsenal and it’s great to see she is now a regular football pundit as well. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHT OR ACHIEVEMENT THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? Signing and playing for Stevenage FC Women has been my proudest moment to date. As well as this, having trials at West Ham when I was only 14 but at the time personal circumstances meant that I wasn’t able to sign for them.
None I consciously do, although I have the same shinpads which I haven’t changed in years! FAVOURITE GOAL YOU’VE SCORED? Whilst playing for Knebworth FC vs Garston I was asked to play right wing to cover an injured player. I received the ball just over the halfway line on the wing, drove the ball forward, shifted it onto my left and just put my laces through it. Top bins ;-) DO YOU HAVE A GO-TO CELEBRATION FOR WHEN YOU SCORE? I don’t have a go-to celebration, they vary depending what kind of goal I score! If it’s a tap in or a worldie.
IT HAS BEEN A STOP START SEASON SO FAR AND AFTER LAST SEASON BEING DECLARED NULL VOID. HOW DO YOU FEEL THE SEASON HAS GONE FOR YOU PERSONALLY? It hasn’t been the best season for me to be honest as i’ve been out injured since last November, however I am hoping to go back to full fitness over the summer and work my way back into the time ready for the season to start again.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FOOTBALL TRICK OR SKILL MOVE TO PULL OUT? I would probably say I’m not the most show-boater of a player but I do love to drop my shoulder or a Cruyff turn.
HOW HAVE YOU BEEN KEEPING FIT AND ACTIVE DURING LOCKDOWN? Due to my injury I haven’t been able to push myself like I wanted to. It has been really tough that I can’t participate in any of the fitness zoom sessions with my teammates and coaches. Just cant wait to get fit again and be back on the pitch.
AS WE’RE CURRENTLY IN LOCKDOWN, WHAT TV SERIES ARE YOU CURRENTLY, OR HAVE BEEN, BINGE WATCHING? I love cheesy cringe programmes so as we had no Love Island on this year, I have watched all the American ones plus Lupin and Money Heist.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR MATCHES AND WHAT DOES YOUR PRE-MATCH ROUTINE LOOK LIKE? Obviously a good nights sleep before matchday and my go-to breakfast is beans on toast with cheese on top (try it) I always pack my kitbag the night before and always travel with my dad. Last thing he always says to me is “remember to check your shoulder”
WHO MAKES YOUR ULTIMATE DREAM TEAM XI [OF FEMALE FOOTBALLERS]? Goalkeeper – Hope Solo Defenders – Alex Scott, Lucy Bronze, Steph Houghton, Alex Greenwood Midfielders – Jordan Nobbs, Kim Little, Jill Scott, Rachel Yankey Strikers – Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe
DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE-MATCH SUPERSTITIONS?

WELCOME CLUB MATTERS Very few clubs have had such an instant impact from their formation, but Bradford City AFC can boast the swiftest rise to the Football League from the moment when Rugby League giant Manningham FC offered to switch codes to association football in 1903. At a meeting with the Football League, keen to expand into Rugby League territory,
a place was offered in next season’s Division Two at the expense of Doncaster Rovers and so taking over the Manningham home ground of Valley Parade and their claret and amber colours, Bradford City AFC was born. In 1908 they won promotion to the top tier for the first time while 1911 still stands as their greatest ever season, earning a highest ever finish of fifth while also winning the FA Cup. From the twenties onwards however, Bradford were plying their trade in the bottom two divisions, and even flirted with losing their Football League status through re-election. Financial problems also caused issues but Bradford finally reached the second tier

again in season 1984-85. This success was of course tragically overshadowed by the fire disaster in which 56 people lost their lives in a blaze at Valley Parade. To this day, Bradford City continues to support the burns unit of University of Bradford, as its official charity. In 2000 Bradford returned to the top tier for the first time in 77 years and lasted the course thanks to a last day winner over Liverpool from David Wetherall. Relegation the next season however along with administration saw a slide in fortunes back to the bottom tier. But this pill was sweetened in January 2013 when the Bantams became the fourth, fourth-tier side ever, to reach a major cup final when they lost 5-0 to Swansea in the Football League Cup.
THE BOSS Manager Mark Trueman has been in the dugout since December 2020, where he took over on a temporary basis from Stuart McCall, before signing a permanent deal in February 2021. Trueman first began as caretaker manager,
before being installed joint-interim manager alongside Conor Sellars. The former non-league midfielder has spent several years within City’s academy, and has most recently taken charge of the club’s under-18s side.
WATCH OUT FOR PAUDIE O’ CONNOR Paudie entered the second of his three-year permanent deal this season, having signed from Leeds United in June 2019. The Irishman began his career in his native country with Limerick, and has also served a spell on loan at Blackpool. The 23-year-old centre-back made 23 appearances during the 2019/20 campaign, and ahead of their Good Friday clash with Forest Green had made 32 appearances this season, scoring twice.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS
BRADFORD I bid welcome to one of the big, great and famous old Yorkshire clubs to Stevenage this afternoon. I remember visiting Valley Parade way back in August 2010. It was our very first away game in the Football League, and the Bantams’ manager was Peter Taylor. We lost 0-1, but we did get promoted that season to EFL1.
FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION Latest news from the SFA this week revolves around Manchester City installing over 5,000 rail seats at the Etihad. This follows similar initiatives by Wolves and Spurs in anticipation of a potential change in legislation supported by the sports minister Nigel Adams. A report by the Sports Ground Safety Authority recognised enhanced safety in top flight football which paves the way for safe standing areas in our top two divisions – happily, not a problem we have here at The Lamex.
ARTEFACT This afternoon’s museum piece was prompted by an email I received last week from long-time Boro fan and good friend, Mark Palmer. Mark forwarded me a copy of a Stevenage v. Bishop’s Stortford programme dated March 4th 1957, denoting the team line-ups and editorial commentary. This is fantastic archive material which helps to corroborate my own database. I’m desperate for anything pre-1963, so do keep them coming. I can be contacted here: Lloyd@sfcsa.co.uk The accompanying photo depicts the earliest Stevenage match-day
www.stevenagefc.com
programme that I have seen to-date. It was a friendly match v. Spurs which was played some 76 years ago on May 28th 1945. Not surprisingly, it was attended by the largest crowd at the old London Road ground since 1939. Happily, we won 2-1! LLOYD BRISCOE SA Chairman
