his week was an opportunity to recover from Saturday’s travelling without a Tuesday game. It was a long weekend, a point gained and now we have recovered from it both mentally and physically. We have had good form at home of late, despite the Bradford result. We know we have got to refocus and regain our home form which is important to us. The next game is always the most important to us, we just need to find some rhythm again and hopefully this week will bring it. Every week is different in football. Every game is different, every scenario is different. We have experienced a lot over the last couple of months, and we are still learning. I am still learning about the players and what we are capable of. I have noted us to be very competitive and consistent in most games we have played. We have got a good platform for this Saturday. In terms of our opponents, they have been more consistent since the turn of the year and picked up some good results recently. We are well aware of the strengths and capabilities that they have, so we will need to be on our toes. Home form is always a priority. Ultimately it is about winning games of football, but you always look first to building your home form. I am pleased with what we have done so far, and it is imperative that we keep that going. When playing in front of your home supporters, a level of consistency in performances is always a building block of any successful team.

“A LEVEL OF CONSISTENCY IN PERFORMANCES IS ALWAYS A BUILDING BLOCK OF ANY SUCCESSFUL TEAM”

www.stevenagefc.com

Jake Reeves is going to be sorely missed because he has been a fundamental part of our good form recently. He will still be another month or so after his operation this week. In terms of the rest of the squad, we are relatively healthy. Of course we want everybody fit, but we are going to have to navigate through injuries along the way. That is what happens, it is the nature of what we do. The squad is capable, and I trust them to be competitive in every game we play.

early six years ago and it’s another Tuesday evening at The Lamex as the Gas come to town. With just three games left of a tough season for the home side which had included the Teddy Sheringham experiment, Boro needed just a point to secure safety for another campaign. Rovers meanwhile were pushing for automatic promotion and this

stalemate did their hopes little good as they stayed in the play-off pack. They had the better of this one as well, Jake Gosling hitting the woodwork while he also put a free kick just over. Boro enjoyed 54% possession in front of the crowd of 3,836, but with just one shot on target, they were grateful to get the much needed point. DARREN ISTED CLICK BELOW TO CHECK OUT THE PROGRAMME

BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 19 FEBRUARY Now, here’s something we don’t believe we’ve seen before this season – a date in the calendar on which Boro’ ledge Martin Gittings hasn’t got a goal to his name for us. Equally as historic, meanwhile, is the fact that 19 February is the day now 10 years ago (yep, a whole decade) that we turned out in the FA Cup Fifth Round for the first time. Joel Byrom’s fizzing second-half shot came centimetres from earning Boro’ a major win over Harry’s high-flying Spurs side at the Lamex. To be fair, our guests had their own chances – and a goal disallowed. But we lived to fight another day in a replay down at the old White Hart Lane. We haven’t made it back to that stage of the cup since, however. That Spurs tie was the first time on 19 February that a Boro’ side had failed to win. In the previous five outings on this date, we played four times at home and

14

once away (at Crewe in 2011). And all of them ended in our favour; including our deeply satisfying 3-0 home win over St Albans City as our march towards the Conference in 1994 gathered pace. And what about recent times; our fortunes on this date since that Spurs encounter. Well, there’s only been one other outing and it came a year after the Lilywhites. Sadly, we seem to have quickly forgotten how to win on 19 February; a first-half lead squandered in our home League One defeat to Oldham Athletic. Looks like we have a lost habit to rediscover at the Lamex this afternoon. 1992 Stevenage Borough 3-1 Biggleswade Town, Southern Combinations Cup R2 (Humphreys 2, Marshall) 1994 Stevenage Borough 3-0 St Albans City, Diadora League Premier Division (Smith, Stein, Venables) 2000 Stevenage Borough 3-1 Northwich Victoria, Nationwide Conference (Alford 2, Hockton) 2005 Stevenage Borough 1-0 Scarborough, Nationwide Conference (Stamp) 2011 Crewe Alexandra 0-1 Stevenage, npower League Two (Harrison) 2012 Stevenage 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur, FA Cup R5 2013 Stevenage 1-2 Oldham Athletic, npower League One (Dunne)

YOU AGAIN? BRISTOL ROVERS Our head-to-head record against the Gas is brief – and slightly odd. For years, our paths never seemed to cross. Even after promotion to the Football League, we kept missing each other. It was an anomaly that only ended in 2015 when they were promoted back from the Conference… and we had failed in our League Two playoff bid the previous year. For all our struggles under Teddy Sheringham, our first-ever trip to the Memorial Stadium earned the former England striker a first away league win as Boro’ boss. Darren Sarll was in charge by the time Bristol Rovers made their first visit to ours (except the friendly that was bundled in with the fee to take Barry Hayles down to the south west in 1997). We drew 0-0 incidentally. Not that it stopped them passing straight through League Two and up to League One. It was nearly four years before we met each other again – still a division apart too. And in an otherwise dismal season

www.stevenagefc.com

for Boro’, the Leasing.com Trophy provided a dim highlight. Part of our most successful run in the competition to date saw us win 1-0 at the Memorial Stadium and book a place in the quarter final. The wait for our next meeting wasn’t quite as long; Bristol Rovers relegated from League One at the end of last season. An early season treat took us down to the west country as we continued our remarkable run at their place. A couple of late goals completed a hattrick of wins – and leaves us with a 100% record on the road, but a solitary draw at ours. Can we bring that winning touch back to the Lamex? Or will our guests start to make a habit of avoiding defeat here?

STEVENAGE FC

WOMEN Dionne Manning Forward

Dionne, you signed for Stevenage FCW before the Christmas break, how have you settled in so far? Really well so far; the girls and staff are really nice so I think it’s going well to be honest. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Yeah, I’ve played for a few clubs but not been in the game that long considering how old I am. I’ve been playing for about 10 years, I play as an attacking player - on the wing and up top in different systems but very attacking minded. What was it about Stevenage FCW that made you want to join us? There were a few clubs that I was considering but for me personally as a player, I like to be able to commit fully so Stevenage was good for me and I also like the set up we have here and I’ve known about Stevenage for a long

time and played them a few times over the years. I’ve seen where they’ve come from and where they are now. They’re definitely a club on the up and have all the foundations in place as well. What do you feel you can bring to this team? Intensity. Before I came here I knew quite a few of the players were younger than me so I felt that the team needed a bit of an older head that brings in some experience. Hopefully I can lead from the front and set an example to give the younger players some confidence and guidance. What are your expectations for the remainder of this season? I want to get Stevenage climbing up the table and I want to help contribute to that; whether that’s assisting or scoring goals myself. I’ve got a defensive duty too for the position that I play in, which is fine. We just need to get some points on the board to avoid relegation.

he last couple of months has seen plenty of positives from an Academy U18’s perspective, the lads like the First Team are now very much at the business end of the season which includes our second years nearing the end of their scholarships and working hard to try and follow in the footsteps of Ben Wilmotts and most recently Jack Smiths in securing professional contracts at the Club. Standout moments have included us securing qualification to the Floodlit Cup semi final after beating Millwall 5-1, a game which also saw us play 3x U15’s and 6x U16’s, the lad’s reward for their excellent performance is a game

away to West Ham Utd. We have also won qualification to Merit League 1 following a top 5 finish in Youth Alliance League which will see us compete against the best performing academies in Category 3 including Championship outfit AFC Bournemouth. The result that secured our qualification to Merit League 1 was a crazy 6-4 win against Cambridge Utd, which saw us 0-3 down after 15 minutes and 2-4 down after an hour, however and again with a very young side including 7+ players playing above their age group the lads fought back to secure all 3 points. CLICK HERE FOR THE COMPLETE SQUAD LIST After relegation last season from League One, the Rovers faithful will be reasonably pleased that their side has made a solid, if unspectacular assault on League Two life this campaign. Rovers sit 7 points off the play-offs and 15 points off the relegation

zone, nicely in mid-table and with little threat to come. Indeed while Boro are just five points behind today’s visitors, they have also played four games more and with points to claim and a good run with games in hand, the Gas could well still have a tilt at a quick return to League One. Fittingly they are mid table for both home and away form.

DID YOU KNOW?

•T he highest finish which Rovers have ever achieved is sixth place in the second tier, and they have hit those heights twice, in 1956 and 1959. • In 2002 Rovers finished 23rd in League Two, but avoided relegation as the rules demoting two teams not one came into force the following year. • Whilst Rovers are most famous for playing at their Eastville ground which they left in 1996, they have in fact played at eight different grounds in their history.

Stevenage FC v Bristol Rovers FC

ONE TO WATCH

THE BOSS Joey Barton, 39, joined Rovers in February 2021 with the club just two points outside the relegation zone in League One. Unable to save the side from the drop, he has overseen a steadying of the ship as the Gas sit comfortably in mid-table. His only previous managerial role was at Fleetwood whom he joined in April 2018 and whom he left almost three years later with the club in 10th position in League One. His playing career has seen him make almost 400 starts after breaking through at Manchester City before moving on to Newcastle (where he scored against Boro in the 3-1 FA Cup upset) and QPR, Marseille, Burnley, and Rangers.

Paul Coutts joined the Gas having already previously played under manager Joey Barton at Fleetwood Town. Coutts’ CV is impressive, with a highlight coming in the form of promotion to the Premier League with Sheffield United. The majority of the Scottish midfielder’s experience has come in either League One or the Championship, with spells at Peterborough United, Preston North End, Derby County and Fleetwood Town complimenting his success at Sheffield United. Coutts showed promise at League Two in the back-end of his previous campaign, joining Salford City for their promotion run-in, with his side narrowly missing out. He linked up with the Gas at the beginning of the summer 2021 transfer window, and will provide an assertive presence in the heart of the midfield.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS WELCOME Bristol Rovers are in town. A big Boro welcome to their players, management and most of all their supporters without which no club exists. A special welcome to the board members of the Bristol Rovers Supporters Club, whose executive comprises Dave Thomas (chair), Helen Wigmore (vice-chair and supporters director), Keith Brookman (secretary) and Sue Williams (treasurer). Must not forget Leanne Hawkins, their away travel organiser who ensures the core of the Pirates support here this afternoon. Welcome all, from your counterparts on my committee.

DID YOU KNOW… That one of Paul Tisdale’s closest friends is the actor Andrew Lincoln. They grew up together in Bath, Somerset. Andrew’s first film was playing the part of ‘Ted’ in Boston Kickout. Boston Kickout was filmed on location in - Stevenage! Not a lot of people know that.

AWAY DAY TO CRAWLEY Who of you went to the recent away game at Crawley? These two did, and I was pleased to have a chat with them. This is Holly Purkiss from Shephall and Callum Jackson from Chells.

Callum’s dad (sadly no longer with us) was the former Borough Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Bruce Jackson. Callum is also related to another former Borough Councillor, Lilly Strange - who was Mayor 20 years ago. “Boro” through and through, you might say.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (FSA) Several months ago, you may recall that I wrote an article about something called “My Club, My Shirt”. It was an initiative launched by Cardiff City supporters. It involved their fans, from all backgrounds, being photographed in their club shirt at their stadium supported by a brief narrative as to why they followed Cardiff. I was pleased to learn that Carlisle United are now the fifth club to follow Cardiff’s lead in this idea, which has the backing of the Fans for Diversity campaign in conjunction with the FSA and ‘Kick It Out’. I raised this topic at the SA’s Committee meeting last Wednesday, and was encouraged by the support I received. If anyone wished to be involved in this initiative, then do please contact me here: Lloyd@sfcsa.co.uk

BORO BUS TO VALE PARK I was most impressed to see an oversubscribed bus to Crawley the other week. Let’s see if we can do it again for the bus to Port Vale next Saturday. Departing Stevenage at 10:30am, the cost is just £25 for members and £30 for nonmembers. You can book on-line here. Alternatively, you can book your place on the coach by contacting John Carroll on 01438-814285 (Between 6 pm & 9 pm). LLOYD BRISCOE Chair - Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association

300,0 At eBay, we believe the heart of football is community. It’s where it all started. When the butchers and the bakers, the shipbuilders and the ironmongers, all came together to form the humble origins of our beloved clubs. And today, these same people, the shop owners, the tradesmen, and the small businesses, continue to be the beating heart of our communities.

000 small businesses across the UK That’s why here at eBay, we’re proud to be supporting over 300,000 small businesses from the communities of the clubs we love. And every match day, we’re donating our advertising spaces around EFL grounds to local businesses, in local communities, all over the country. So join us in supporting small businesses across the UK, because today they need us more than ever.
