n behalf of everyone at the club I would like to extend a warm welcome to Colin and everyone connected with Cambridge United today. We arrive here today off the back of a hard earned point at Forest Green. With two home games in a short space of time after coming together, it was a real challenge for us to show a true reflection of the team we are working to be. Though we had some structure and I couldn’t fault the attitude and work ethic of the players, we needed more time to work as a group on the training ground to get closer to where we need to be. I felt there were far more signs at Forest Green on Saturday that the work on the training ground is transferring onto the pitch. We dominated the first half and the majority of the second both with and without the ball. Though we didn’t get the win we wanted, if we can build on those many phases of the game where we were really good, then we will be rewarded with the results. I want to say a big thank you to the fans who travelled to the game - the way you got behind the team was awesome! It is a proud moment as a football club when your own away supporters out sing a home crowd and for 95 minutes you were amazing. Thank you. If there are games we look out for when the fixture list arrives, at home to Cambridge is certainly one that is right at the top of the list. The passion, the emotion, the intensity of a derby is always special to be part of and as a group we are ready to fight for every ball as if our lives depend on it to get us over the line with a win today.

Last week’s game against Forest Green was a huge improvement on previous weeks and I don’t know how we didn’t win the game. In the end we had to be satisfied with 1 point but when their keeper gets Man of the Match it tells you something about how the game went. No matter – our stall is set out and we’ve started our climb up the table. It’s tough thinking about making the play-offs when you’ve given everyone a head start, but that’s our mind set. We have a lot of making up to do but we’ll have 2 or 3 of the injured senior players available today and another 2 or 3 more next week. In order to get these lads match fit we will organise a behind closed doors game for the middle of the week at Bragbury End. Today we welcome Cambridge in a local derby. These are usually very entertaining games and I’m looking Stevenage FC v Cambridge UTD

forward to seeing how we can build on last week’s performance and start adding goals to secure the wins we deserve. I’m sure that, once we get on the winning trail, we will quickly climb the table as we will never give up chasing for a play-off place. Off the pitch, you may have read that we were denied permission to operate a ‘soft opening’ of the North Stand on safety grounds. This was disappointing as work is going on and we believe we’d have been ready. However, the list included things we might not complete and we felt it was best to postpone any attempt to open the stand. As it stands now we are gearing up the soft opening for the next home game – against Grimsby on 12th October. This will mean only North Stand Season Ticket holders will be allowed in, as we still have work to do inside the stand. Back to the game and let’s get behind the lads. t’s been a really good period of work here at the Academy. Two consecutive wins, really encouraging performances and, like the 1st team, players returning from injury. The boys’ response to change has been great and highlights once again what a good bunch of young scholars we have in the building. An enormous amount of credit should go not only to the players but also the staff, particularly Stephen Payne and Ronnie Henry who have led from the front and really been diligent with their work in Alex’ s absence. The player-centred approach we have to all our Academy players really shines through in times like these and it has been great to see and feel such a positive environment in the camp. What was particularly pleasing about the weekend games was the attitude of players, their desire to win a game of Stevenage FC v Cambridge UTD

football without sacrificing any of our Academy principles or philosophies. We continue to push our young players every day and seeing so many U15 and U16 players appearing in the U18 squad is always a particular highlight of my week as it shows how quickly we are developing as an Academy, not only are we fielding young players but we are competing and overtaking rival clubs whilst giving up years of development on the pitch. Below the scholars, our schoolboy programme continues to develop and once again the weekend fixtures against Portsmouth highlighted some real talent emerging through, players that we feel can have a real impact on the senior side in the not too distant future. Stevenage FC Women visit Girls Development Centre On Monday 23rd September, three members of the Stevenage FC Women first team visited Stevenage FC Foundation’s Girls Development Centre. The Development Centre is for girls aged 8-16 and is a supplementary training and games programme which complements girls’ existing grassroots football commitments. The girls were surprised on Monday as first teamers, Amy Makewell, Ashleigh Deacon and Lisa Nixon turned up to support with

the sessions and interact with the girls. The players spent some time with each age group, including our GK Development Centre and assisted with the coaching, took part in Q&A’s and also got involved with the session. Project Manager Dani Toyn spoke about the importance of First Team Player visits: ‘It’s really great that the ladies gave up their own time to come and attend the Girls Development Centre sessions on Monday night. It’s important for the Girls to see a pathway within the set-up and hopefully build aspirations of playing at the highest level they can. We had over 55 girls in attendance who all got the chance to meet the players which is brilliant and hopefully they all got something from it.’ The development centre is still looking for players in it’s u10 and u14 age groups and any interested player should contact Dani on womenandgirls@stevenagefc.com. www.stevenagefc.com | 23

WOMEN Stevenage FC Women 0 Ipswich Town Ladies 7 Stevenage FC women fell to a disappointing defeat at home to Ipswich on Sunday in a match played at the County Ground. The visitors began strongly and took just four minutes to take the lead when they found the net from the penalty spot. A second penalty saw them double the lead on 21 minutes although Boro held on to keep it to 2-0 at the break. The match was sewn up on 57 minutes when Ipswich netted their third and they went on to add further goals on 68, 73, 80 and 86 minutes. Stevenage keeper Hannah Vandersluis was named player of the match. Stevenage FC Women have been drawn at home to Peterborough United Women in the second round qualifying of the Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s FA Cup in a tie to be played on Sunday October 6. In other news the Development Squad enjoyed a 5-1 win this week against Wodson Park Ladies FC.

LATEST NEWS WELCOME Well, hello to Cambridge United, and especially to their visiting fans and supporters. Cambridge are currently managed by the celebrated Colin Calderwood. However, my memory of United’s managers stems right back to Bill Leivers, the man who got the club into the Football League, way back in 1970. Bill was a good friend to my old dad (Jim) who was Stevenage’s manager at that time, and many a player was sent on trial from The Abbey to tread the Broadhall Way turf during his period at the club. Ah, memories.

ALAN GILZEAN Many Stevenage fans will recall the time when Alan Gilzean was the manager of our predecessor club, Stevenage Athletic.

but a new book comes out soon which commemorates his amazing career. “The King of White Hart Lane” has been written by award-winning writer Mike Donovan and is the authorised biography of Alan Gilzean. Poignantly, the book refers to Alan’s time here at Stevenage for the 1975-76 season. Published by Pitch Publishing, the book is scheduled to come out on October 17th.

BURY FC I received a letter from Will Holt. Will is spearheading a campaign to have Bury FC re-instated into Football League 2 next season. Latest Formâ&#x20AC;Ś United have been inconsistent in their form of late after only winning two games and losing four in their last six fixtures. They have gone on to pick up just two more victories and two draws in their 10 games played as the club sit in 11th place. Lately, Cambridge grabbed back to back wins on the road away from the Abbey Stadium against promotion chasers Crewe (3-2) and Mansfield (4-0). Paul Lewis

Star Man… Paul Lewis has been the heartbeat of the midfield and looks set to have the best season of his career. The 24-year-old has scored three goals and made three assists this season; he single-handedly won all three points at home to Scunthorpe. Lewis scored two, including the winner and set up Harvey Knibbs for their opening goal, as The U’s came from behind to win 3-2. The central midfielder started his career at Macclesfield Town and moved to United in 2017/18, signing a three-year contract at the club. Lewis did go out on loan to Dover halfway through the following season, as he played six games for the Kent club.

Colin Calderwood

The Gaffer… Colin Calderwood was appointed head coach in December last year after taking over from Joe Dunne. The club was on a run of poor form and sat just above the relegation places, until Calderwood successfully guided the club away from the drop zone. The 54-year-old wasted no time in bringing in players this season as 11 were signed in the summer transfer window The former defender had an eventful playing career in which he played for Mansfield, Tottenham and Aston Villa. But his biggest achievements came at Swindon Town, as the club went from the old Fourth Division (League 2) all the way up to the Premiership (Premier League).
