he performance was excellent and a carry-over from Barnsley - a game we deserved to win. We freshened the team up, and we will again tomorrow. The standards in the squad are excellent, and the lads have a real focus on the work they are doing. Cambridge United have good players, an experienced manager and brilliant supporters, so it will be another tough game. They deserved to win at Oxford on Boxing Day given their performance, so we will need to be at our very best. As managers, we can all moan, but this happens every season. Players prefer to play than train, so that in itself is a bonus. We will be as fresh as possible, and the lads are incredibly fit, so all in all, let’s get on with it. Bigger crowds are normal at this time of the year, which again helps create great

atmospheres for the lads to play in. We have a squad of players, not a favoured eleven players. The staff and I take a wide range of factors before we pick the team and, of course, the substitutes bench. We need to remain humble and focused for every game. Any team can beat any other on any day. It is all about what we do. We do not fear any team, but I can tell you we respect every one of our opponents. Our supporters have been brilliant. I know how hard it is to find the money to support us at the moment, and I can say now my staff and players are often reminded. May I wish every supporter a very Happy Christmas, enjoy this festive period and, as always, back the lads vocally like never before!

ood evening and welcome to the players and officials of Cambridge United. Our Boxing Day win was as emphatic a win as I’ve seen at The Lamex in many a year. Clearly, losing at Barnsley (unjustly in my view after 13 games undefeated) spurred the lads on to get back to winning ways. It really could have been five or six on the day. This is our last game of 2023, and what a year it’s been under Steve and his team. The FA Cup win over Aston Villa started the year off, and it’s been memorable ever since. With automatic promotion to League One and now, sitting nicely in a top six place knowing we’ve dropped points we probably should not have dropped due to various factors we cannot control. But it’s an exciting journey, and we’re ready for 2024. We’ve successfully changed the entire Club over the past few years, and you only have to look back to Boxing Day 2021 when we were close to the foot of the EFL, to see how far we’ve come.
It’s not luck either. Our Club has no debt and is in great shape, with training facilities as good as most Championship clubs and our commercial and gate income growing continually. As we move into 2024, our future looks very bright indeed, and I’m delighted to see our fan base growing month by month too. It’s been a pleasure to be in charge of your Club in 2023, and I hope we can continue to make you proud to be a Boro fan in 2024. Wishing you all happiness and good health for the coming year. Enjoy the match!

BEST MEMORY/MEMORIES OF SUPPORTING BORO?
WHY DO YOU LOVE BORO?
FAVOURITE ALL-TIME PLAYER (AND WHY)?
FAVOURITE BORO SHIRT?
My all time favourite game was Aston Villa away when we won at Villa Park. The celebrations and atmosphere when we scored a late winner were amazing. Also Grimsby at home when we confirmed promotion to league 1 was a great game and celebration.
My favourite and all time favourite player is Jamie Read, I love it when he scores winning goals in tight games.
I love the Boro because they are my hometown club, I was born, raised and have lived in Stevenage all my life. I love to come early on a home game and help the disabled supporters to there seats as a volunteer, before sitting with my dad and cheering the team on from my seat in the west stand. My favourite Boro shirt is the current away top. Purple was always my favourite colour when I was growing up so I love the colours.
We are also delighted to give a warm Boro welcome this evening to Stevenage supporter Samantha Ross. Samantha is a disabled supporter who follows the team home and away. She will also be partying on January 6 when she turns 40 so a happy birthday for the big day and here’s to a win for her tonight.

t’s a big Boro welcome to our three mascots tonight for what is our final game of a remarkable 2023! A year which has seen us earn promotion and then cement a place in the race for the Championship, it has been a remarkable 12 months and we hope for a great end against Cambridge. We have three mascots hoping to give us great luck
and first up is Blake Smith, 8, who lives in Hoddesdon and attends Roselands School in the town. Blake lists football, cricket and Fortnite among his hobbies and skip Carl Piergianni is his top Boro player. Next up it’s Seb Holmes who is also 8 and who lives in Buntingford. Seb attend St Andrews School and football is his big hobby while Jordan
Roberts is his star Boro player. Last but by no means least is Riley Cuthbert, 12. Riley lists football and gaming as his hobby and Taye Is his star Boro player. Also Riley will be marking his birthday on New Year’s Eve so happy birthday for then! We wish all our mascots a great evening with us and hope they see yet another Boro win to round off 2023.

t was New Year’s Day and if Stevenage fans could set the club any resolution for 2004, it would almost definitely be: to win at home. It was a feat they hadn’t achieved since the 15th of November in a 2-1 win over Accrington Stanley. It was the second game in a row that they had faced Farnborough; Graham Westley’s men had fallen to defeat just six days ago away to Farnborough and were looking to gain revenge. Boro hadn’t scored a single goal in their last three games; it was therefore a welcome surprise for the home faithful when Darryn Stamp opened the scoring within just twelve minutes to put the hosts ahead. The 1,732 home fans were quickly off their seats again in the 34th minute as Darryn Stamp

netted his second of the game in just over half an hour. Goals were now coming thick and fast for Stevenage who had suddenly found their shooting boots at the turn of the year. Dannie Bulman was the next on the scoresheet as the midfielder made it 3-0 just after half time. Robert Traynor gave a reason for home fans to worry after he pulled one back for Farnborough in the 72nd minute, considering Stevenage’s form at Broadhall Way of late many inside the ground couldn’t be blamed for thinking the worst. However, Boro’ professionally handled the game, making sure that Farnborough’s goal was merely a consolation rather than the start of a dramatic comeback. The visitors’ frustration was personified in the games final minute as Jack Turner was dismissed to complete what was a poor away trip for his team. BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 29 DECEMBER
It remains a staple of the English footballing It’s only right we squeeze in another match in the six days between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day – even if today’s Premier League managers disagree. Mind you, 29 December is perhaps one of the quieter days in that period. Eight times we’ve played on this date in the 43 senior seasons to have gone before this one. And it’s a true mixed bag. Let’s start with the most pertinent result on this date for us – and it’s our 1-0 home win over today’s visitors back in 2020; Charlie Carter with the all-important goal. It’s actually the only time we’ve played at home on this day before. And it gave us a first Football League win on 29 December, plus a first clean sheet since 1990’s 3-0 win at Tring Town. Our third and only other win on this day came back in 2007 when Boro’ swept Altrincham aside on a rainy afternoon up in Greater Manchester. Such was our scoring vibe that afternoon that we
1990 T ring Town 0-3 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Football League Division Two North (Brown 2, Cardines) 1997 Hednesford Town 2-1 Stevenage Borough, Football Conference (Wordsworth) 2007 Altrincham 1-5 Stevenage Borough, Blue Square Premier (Morison 2, Berry, S Lewis, McMahon) 2013 Bristol City 4-1 Stevenage, Sky Bet League One (Zoko) 2018 Crewe Alexandra 1-0 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two (Reid s/o) 2019 Plymouth Argyle 2-1 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two (List) 2020 Stevenage 1-0 Cambridge United, Sky Bet League Two (Carter) 2021 Swindon Town 0-0 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two ) netted the home side’s consolation goal through John White’s own goal. They say they all count, but not when they’re in your own net. Apart from that, our fortunes have not been so festive on this date in history. The writing
19
www.stevenagefc.com
was already on the wall as far as our 2019-20 campaign was concerned. But a 96th-minute winner scored by Plymouth Argyle on 29 December 2019 still hurt in that denied us what would’ve been a fair old point on the road at the promotion-chasing Pilgrims.
IT’S CAMBRIDGE UNITED AGAIN…
You do love to see it – our recent record against the Us is rather impressive; Boro’ currently enjoying a streak of five straight wins (and six unbeaten). This run dates back to a comprehensive and – let’s face it – unexpected – four-goal victory at the Abbey in an otherwise pitiful 2019-20 campaign. It flipped the balance in our head-to-head record too. We now have 14 wins from 30 previous, with the Us on 11. At the Lamex, we’ve been victorious 10 times out of 15.
BORO’ AT THIS STAGE…
Gameweek 25 It’s hard to overstate just how impressive Boro’s 1990-1 Vauxhall Football League Division Two North campaign was. It was a season in which we hit 20 wins in just 24 league outings; collecting 70 goals and conceding just 15 along the way. And it was done with just one loss to our name. Mind you, two defeats in 24 – as we recorded in 1980-1, 1989-90, and 2009-10 – is no mean feat either. At the other end of the scale, things were now improving in 2002-3 – a 5-0 win against Graham Westley’s Farnborough Town getting us to 20 points after 24 league games. There are two seasons, however, in which we’ve failed to reach 20 points at this stage. The first was our ill-fated 2013-4 League One campaign (19 points). The other? Well, you can guess quite easily – but no prizes available if you were right. It was, of course, our 2019-20 season (17 points).
MAGIC MOMENT
Blue Square Premier – Friday 01 January 2010
4 STEVENAGE FC 1
served very snowy and very cold the following season. After a 3-1 win at the Abbey on Boxing Day, the return match at the Lamex on New Year’s Day was one of a very few to survive the inclement weather. Our visitors may perhaps have wished for the chance to come back another day such was the ease at which we romped to victory. Yemi Odubade got things up and running midway through the first half. But we didn’t have it all our own way. Danny Crow actually got the Us back on terms with the half time interval coming into sight. Our guests didn’t manage to get there on terms, however; Lee Boylan re-establishing our advantage and then adding another just after the hour mark. Chris Beardsley got himself on the scoresheet before Boylan completed his brace to firmly establish our superiority. To make things worse for Cambridge, Brian Saah was sent off late on for a second bookable offence. Boro’, meanwhile, hit the top of the table; Oxford United’s game being postponed. We started 2010 very much as we meant to go on…
ON BOTH SIDES…
To play today?: Looking at this evening’s match squads, there are two names in the opposition ranks to have featured for us at some point – namely Paul Digby and Fejiri Okenabirhie. On the other side, you have to look in our dugout for the only person to cross the divide in this direction; Alex Revell starting his career at the Abbey back in 1997. Best of the Rest: Of course, we aren’t short of players who have turned out for both ourselves and the Us in time gone by. Lee Boylan, Mark Albrighton, and David Bridges all won league winners medals with us; the first two arriving at the Lamex from the Abbey. Other names on the list include Sam McMahon, Mark Roberts, Lionel Perez, and Graham Cox.

ACADEMY G ood evening and welcome back to another home fixture on this festive period. I will always start by wishing the Gaffer and his team the best of luck in this evenings fixture V Cambridge United. I hope everyone had a joyous Christmas and a festive season filled with warmth, love, and laughter! As we stand on the threshold of a brand new year, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead. The year 2024 promises to be a journey of new beginnings, opportunities, and shared experiences, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of this exciting and progressive football club. The possibilities that await us in the coming year are endless, and I am eager to embark on this journey with the players/staff and parents. Whether it’s through shared moments of triumph, exciting new projects, or simply celebrating the joy of being part of an incredible community. As we step into the future, my message is simple let’s continue to support each other, inspire one another, and make the most of every opportunity that comes our way. Passion and dedication makes all the difference, and I am genuinely excited to see where the football club and academy goes and what we can achieve together in the months to come. The Chairman and I have been working on some exciting plans to continue to improve Shephalbury Sports Academy. Leon Hunter and have already had several meetings to discuss the long term vision and plans for the academy and how we can take it forward. I have always been big advocate of our coaching team and we will continue to strive to achieve excellence in everything we do. It may not always be easy and there will be some tough moments, but together the group is ready to face the challenge to improve the

experiences for everyone. Our EDP set up has come on leaps and bounds and I am excited to see where Josh C-Stevens, Josh Newman and Ashley Taylor take this to provide young aspiring sports people the best opportunities to succeed in the industry. At the start of the year, we will have a new full time safeguarding officer for the Academy, something which I feel is really important to our progressive environment. We will also welcome a new Head of Education, in which I will make further announcements once they begin but both appointments are exciting for us. Finally, May 2024 be a year that exceeds all expectations, and may we face it with unwavering enthusiasm and positivity. WOMEN
S
eason’s greetings ‘Boro fans! We at Stevenage FCW would like to wish you all the very best for the festive period. It has been an up and down year for the women’s team. Inconsistency being the key theme. A change in manager towards the back end of the 2022/23 season stablished the dressing room and fostered a positive environment. Without doubt the highlight of 2023 was Stevenage FCW retaining the Hertfordshire County Cup for an unprecedented fifth time. Unfortunately, that won’t be the case this season as our trophy goes out loan … The focus throughout the 2023/24 season has been nurturing and coaching young and talented players who are hungry and fighting for a place in the First Team. We have seen the likes of Lilia Dempsey, Matilda Thomas O’Keefe and Sophie Hendy lay claim to cementing a first team spot. This season has also seen some of our players achieve some impressive milestones for the club. Vice-Captain, Amy Makewell, recently became a centurion as she cemented her place in ‘Boro history with over 100 appearances and also notched her 50th goal for the club against Haringey at the start of December. Club stalwart, Chloe Gunn completed her 50th appearance
over two spells for the ‘Boro back in October. Whilst the league is out of our reach for this season, there is still plenty to play for. We are looking to secure a top four finish, win the League Cup after being pipped in the final last season, and continue developing young footballers to demonstrate our commitment to providing a pathway through to the first team. We would like to take the opportunity to remind you that men’s season ticket holders can come to watch us for free. We play our home games at the Herts FA County Ground in Letchworth. Our next home game is on Sunday 7 January against Wroxham FC Women. Kick-off is at 2pm. We need all your support and would love to welcome you. Up the ‘Boro! You can see Stevenage FCW in action in the first match back for 2024 with Wroxham on Sunday 7th January. FOUNDATION FUNDING PARTNERS
W
elcome to The Lamex Stadium for this Boxing Day fixture against Northampton. As we are all in the process of taking in the festivities that this time of year brings, it is also often a time for reflection, something that we’ve been doing a lot over recent weeks at the Foundation. 2023 has been a pheonominal year for all associated with Stevenage FC, and the Foundation is no different to this. With the back drop of the fantastic achievement by Steve Evans and the men’s team promotion to League 1, our community work has gone from strength to strength across all areas. We are now engaging with more people each and every week, from a wider range of backgrounds, and supporting them with an ever increasing range of ways to live an active, healthy and positive life. A personal highlight for me was finally getting the underpass street art project over the line, and launched in parternship with both Stevenage Borough, and Hertfordshire County Councils. We’re looking forward to the next phase of the project that we hope to launch in 2024.
It is only right that when mentioning the growth of the Foundations’ work, that I take a moment to thank all the staff that have contributed to this work, day in day out, week to week, twelve months of the year. Our team now has over 70 dedicated and passionate staff, all of whom make such a difference to our community with what they deliver for us. This can also be echoed for our board of trustees of who have continued to provide guidance and support to myself and the team throughout the year. Our work over Christmas doesn’t stop though, and over the festive period we will be delivering Soccer Camps, and our HAPpy Camps offering 320 FREE activity camp places being offered to children in our local community that are on free school meals, who will also receive a hot meal to tackle holiday hunger, find out more and book at space using this link – CLICK HERE – simply search for “Stevenage FC Foundation”. Cambridge United announced Neil Harris as the Club’s new First Team Head Coach on December 6. The 46-year-old signed an 18-month contract and took charge ahead of their 2-2 draw at Charlton Athletic. Harris enjoyed a storied career as a player which began at nearby Cambridge City, but he
most notably played for and captained Millwall, where he achieved legend status by scoring 138 goals in 431 appearances, making him the Club’s all-time leading goalNeil Harris scorer. After retiring from playing in 2013, Harris coached the Millwall U21s before being handed the reigns to the First Team in 2015 on a permanent basis. Whilst at the helm of the Lions, Harris won promotion from League One and led the Club to the FA Cup Quarter Finals, winning 42% of his 245 games in charge. A move to Cardiff City followed, where he reached the Championship Play-Off semifinals in his first full season in the job, before becoming Gillingham Manager in 2021, where he spent 20 months at Priestfield Stadium prior to leaving in October 2023, with the Club four points off top of the Sky Bet League Two table.

Flying winger James Brophy signed a threeyear contract with Cambridge United in the summer of 2021. The left-winger arrived at the Abbey Stadium after spending four seasons at Leyton Orient, where the fan-favourite made over 150 appearances and lifted the 2018/19 National League title. James turned down an offer to extend his stay in London two years later, opting for a return to third tier football for the first time since 2017.

Paul Digby Since joining the club from Stevenage in July 2020, Paul Digby has been integral in the rise of Cambridge United. Dictating the middle of the park with authority, the Barnsley Academy product is a real presence and a motivator within the group. His debut season at the Abbey was an imposing one, capitalising on his experience in the division thanks to spells with Mansfield Town and Forest Green Rovers beforehand, by seeing promotion through. Ready-made, he captained the team for the majority of their first season back in Sky Bet League One and already has a century of appearances in black and amber to his name.

WELCOME
LATEST NEWS
A big, warm wintry welcome to our near neighbours from Cambridge this evening. We especially welcome their fans and supporters, and to Chris Neil who is chair of the Cambridge United FC Supporters Panel (CUSP for short). Chris is ably supported by Dave Burkett (vice chair) and Phil Saich (secretary) – plus a committee comprising another eight (8) members. Welcome all, and hope you have a safe journey home after the game.
to feedback their matchday experience. “Without match officials we don’t have a game to watch and, with the level of scrutiny now upon them, their job is arguably harder than ever. We hope that this work with PGMOL can help develop understanding between supporters and referees across all levels of the game.”
INTER-CITY BORO
On Monday January 1st our journey’s take us to the famous old city of Portsmouth and the famous old ground of Fratton Park. Did you know that Portsmouth is the only English city that is not on the mainland of the UK? Neither did I ‘til I looked it up. So, at a cost of just £25 per member you can travel in comfort on one of our buses which depart the Lamex at 10 am. Let’s see the new year in with a bang and get thee to Pompey on New Year’s day. See website for details. Part of the contingent of Stevenage supporters at Barnsley on Dec 23rd
FSA NEWS
Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) have strengthened their dialogue through the creation of a new working group. Attendees will be made up of the FSA’s Premier League, EFL and Women’s Game network personnel, fan representatives drawn from the FSA’s network of democratically structured trusts and supporter groups as well as senior figures from PGMOL. Malcolm Clarke, chair of the FSA, said: “In the past couple of seasons’ we’re pleased to have developed a new relationship with PGMOL which gives our supporter groups the opportunity

DELVIN STEVENS
Delvin Stevens was a Knebworth lad who went on to represent Stevenage Town FC, Stevenage Athletic AND Stevenage Borough. Sadly, and unexpectedly, Delvin passed on about 18 months ago. He was 74. The Stevens family always made it a tradition of attending a home game closest to New Year’s day. So, this evening, please join me in commemorating one of our club’s greatest servants with his family – Dawn (Delvin’s wife) , Lucy, Elley, Marc, Becky( children) and nine grand-children.
LISTER HOSPITAL CHILDREN’S WARD
I should like to offer my personal thanks to everybody involved with the Supporters’ Association-organised annual club visit to the Lister Hospital Childrens’ Ward last week. My thanks to club staff who helped distribute the presents and to Jackie Berners, Claire Hickey and Andy Mugridge who organised, arranged and wrapped up all the presents individually, especially for the event. Thank you. Happy New Year all! LLOYD BRISCOE Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association
