ood afternoon and welcome to The Lamex Stadium for today’s game against Carlisle United. On Tuesday night we wanted to win - of course we did. I thought the players put in a lot of effort in a very competitive game. It is another point on the board, so I am content with that in terms of the first home game. I demanded that the players show a competitive attitude and a spirit that we knew we were going to need, and they did that. Now we welcome Carlisle United to The Lamex in similar circumstances, in a game we are desperate to win. We are halfway through a football season, and we have to get results. I am looking to develop my own style, but there are more pressing topics and that is results. In terms of how I want to play football

in the future, that is going to take a while. First things first, we need some results to start building momentum. The priority here is one game at a time. Players are playing for places in the team, they need to be receptive to the direction that I am giving them. Above all else, they have got to work hard. We are putting the hours in on the training ground to understand the patterns that we need to play as a team and do the tough stuff. They have to show gumption and every week is another opportunity to become more functional as a group. Now is the time to be functional and effective. They need to do the running and the battling in equal measures. This is an important period for the Club, and we will take it one game at a time because the next game is always the most important.

ood afternoon and welcome everyone to The Lamex Stadium. Over the last few weeks, we have been really focused on getting back on track and getting the win that will breed confidence for the festive period. It has been a positive changing room and positive training ground, working hard on a day-to-day basis and listening to the manager’s messages that he is trying to get across. When a new manager comes in, they have a different view on how to play football and how to implement that. It is now up to us as players to focus on the messages we are given and put them into play on a matchday. It will be a busy festive period, but that gives us an opportunity to get points on the board. The more points we get, the higher up the table we get and the more confidence will grow. We are more than capable with the quality in the squad to have a good run of form. After the Rochdale game, I was unaware that I was suspended to be honest. I thought I was on four bookings so was disappointed to be suspended for the Tranmere game. But with that getting postponed, it carried on to the Scunthorpe game. I came back into training on the Monday after Tranmere, and fifteen minutes into the training session I slightly pulled my glute. That set me back a week, but gave me the opportunity to rest and get it right. I have been working with Toby the physio and have been back training for the last couple of days. Now I am looking forward to being back involved with the squad. My message to the supporters is come and back us. Support the new manager, support the coaching staff, support the players. We have got a group of lads that want to work hard, do well and win games of football. We are not naïve

www.stevenagefc.com

“WE CAN MAKE THE LAMEX A REAL FORTRESS WITH EVERYONE’S HELP” enough to think that will happen every week, but it is a hardworking group that cares. We appreciate all the support we get, because when it comes to Saturday, especially at home, people do not like coming to Stevenage to play. The fans play a massive part in that. We can make The Lamex a real fortress with everyone’s help. Up the Boro, Skip.

This afternoon we welcome Henry Dalzell-Williamson to the Lamex Stadium as our mascot for the game with Carlisle. Henry is six years of age and lives in Stevenage, while he is also a pupil at St Michael’s, Woolmer Green. The Boro fan lists football, playing on his Nintendo, listening to music and having lots of fun as his main pastimes. Here’s hoping Henry has a great time with us and brings Boro enough luck today to get the three points.

BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 11 DECEMBER Just a week-and-a-half before the nights start to get longer again, today hasn’t been a bad date in the history for Boro’. Of course, the verdict would have been very different as we went into our 1993 home clash with Dorking. With two crushing 4-1 defeats under our belt on 11 December up until that point, the omens wouldn’t have been good. The good news is that 1993 was Boro’s turn to score four goals of their own; enough to edge out our guests by the odd goal in seven. And, yes, Martin Gittings was among the goals. It also kickstarted a run of four straight wins on this date in history. The most recent, and arguably most dramatic, was our 3-2 home win over Exeter City in 2004. Boro’ took the lead through Anthony Elding in the first half, only for a Steve Flack brace in first-half stoppage time to flip the match on its head. Dino Maamria levelled things up on the hour mark, before pulling out a superb overhead kick six minutes from time to nab it for us on the day.

16

It also helped us forget a midweek loss to Woking, which helps. Between Dorking and Exeter, we recorded league wins away at Dagenham & Redbridge in 1995 and at home to Dover Athletic in 1999. But our winning streak on this date in history was cut short in 2010; the last time we actually played on 11 December. And it fell to one of our current bogey teams to deliver that blow. Northampton Town left the Lamex with the win thanks to a first half goal from Ryan Gilligan. Our cause wasn’t exactly helped as Darius Charles came on at half time – and was sent off six minutes later! 1982 Stevenage Borough 1-4 Newport Pagnell Town, United Counties League Premier Division (Josiah) 1984 Sutton United 4-1 Stevenage Borough, Hitachi Cup R3 (Beech) 1993 Stevenage Borough 4-3 Dorking, Diadora League Premier Division (Graham 2, Gittings, Venables) 1995 Dagenham & Redbridge 1-2 Stevenage Borough, GM Vauxhall Conference (Webster, Hayles) 1999 Stevenage Borough 3-1 Dover Athletic, Nationwide Conference (Leadbeater, Alford 2) 2004 Stevenage Borough 3-2 Exeter City, Nationwide Conference (Elding, Maamria 2) 2010 Stevenage 0-1 Northampton Town, npower League Two

YOU AGAIN? CARLISLE UNITED It doesn’t feel like it’s all that long since we last welcomed Carlisle United to the Lamex. And that’s because – in the grand scheme of things – it isn’t. Nine months is how long it’s been, though; 20 March the date that the Cumbrians were beaten by three goals to one. It went some way to making our amends for our 4-0 defeat at their place almost exactly a year ago to the day (12 December 2020). Boro’ have very mixed fortunes against the Cumbrians. You don’t need us to remind you that it was these chaps who ended our Football League dream in 2005. After two wins from two in the regular league schedule for Boro’, it would be third time lucky for them at Stoke’s Britannia Stadium. Since then, Carlisle United have won nine out of the 19 encounters that have taken place – all in the Football League, as it goes. For the avoidance of doubt,

www.stevenagefc.com

it means they’ve won 10 out of 22. On the other hand, we’ve won eight. Four meet-ings have ended all square by that measure – though none since our goalless draw in January 2018. Much of our uneven record is down to our relatively poor run of form between the 2011-2 and 2017-8 seasons. That six year stretch in both Leagues One and Two saw us pick up just two wins in 12. They won seven in that time. But we then went on a little spurt that saw us go four without defeat and keeping our sheets clean in doing so. Of course, it’s the 201920 season that stopped that productive run. Maybe March’s win, however, has us back on the right track?

aving now been at the Club for just under a month I can firmly say it’s been an action-packed but most importantly very enjoyable start. I was thrilled to accept the position of Professional Development Phase Lead Coach to work alongside Robbie, Jorden, Ronnie and the rest of the Academy staff, all of whom have been so welcoming and supportive from the off. For the best part of the last 5 years I’ve managed in Non-League with Hastings United FC where were it not for the pandemic I’m sure we would’ve have won at least one promotion in that time, having lost only 4 league games for a majority of that period. Before Hastings Utd I spent time at Eastbourne Borough with their First Team set-up which was preceded by a long spell with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Club’s Academy. Having spent my most recent times in the game within First Team football I was thoroughly looking forward to a change in challenge within Stevenage’s reputable Academy set-up, so when being offered the job and in the same conversation being asked to help Robbie and Ronnie with the First Team in the interim it came as quite a surprise-on day one at the Club I was faced with the small task of MK Dons in the FA Cup…….fortunately it ended up being a

great first day! Supporting Robbie, Ronnie and the rest of the First Team staff and players from MK Dons to Sutton Utd has been a really enjoyable challenge, everyone was so receptive whilst being enthusiastic about the task at hand-the players were an absolute pleasure to work with and showed real grit with quality which was undoubtedly the most important factor in being able to hand over a side unbeaten in 90 mins during that 4 game spell. On the First Team front I’m thoroughly looking forward to supporting Paul, Mel and the team as a whole, whilst on an Academy level being extremely excited about the challenge of helping a really capable group of young men in the U18’s to try and bridge the gap to the Club’s First Team. Whilst the First Team are today doing battle with Carlisle, myself and the U18’s will be away to Nottingham Forest looking to continue the groups on-going positive run of form, which was reinforced most recently with a really decent 3-0 home win against MK Dons. From everyone in the Academy we are wishing Paul, Mel and the team all the best for today’s game! CHRIS AGUTTER Professional Development Phase Lead Coach

STEVENAGE FC

WOMEN Sophia Sharos Midfielder

Sophia, a very warm welcome to Stevenage, how have you settled in so far? So far settling in ok, it’s been a little bit of adjusting coming from America but I’m getting settled in with the girls slowly, seeing how Stevenage plays and what my role here will be. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I’m from St Louis in America and I’ve come over here to do a Masters in Media Journalism and Communications. How would you describe yourself as a footballer? I would say I’m very aggressive, get stuck in, gritty – I have that passion to be like a soldier on the field. I like to connect the simple passes and make the game easier for my teammates and overall make the game easy for everyone. What have been your experiences playing football in America? I’ve got to say football now instead of soccer but football in America has been a blessing to me! I played Division 1 level in my first two years of college at Tennessee Martin then I went to Division 2 at Barry University in Miami, so I’ve had a very good wide range of both levels. What differences have you found playing football in England compared to America?

www.stevenagefc.com

English football is a little bit more technical whereas American football is more physical and get stuck in. I think it’s important to learn the differences between all of the different areas of football like playing with different girls is really important. When you come together it’s still the same game of football. Who was your football idol or role model whilst growing up? Growing up it would have to be Mia Hamm, she was the face of American football; winning gold medals and just starting the women’s programme what it is in America today. I just remember doing book reports on her, thinking about her whilst playing as a child and then moving into adult football; Carli Lloyd and Abby Wambach setting the tone for the position I play as a midfielder. From the men’s side, I always look up to Sergio Ramos because he plays the way I play; always getting stuck in – he has that lion mentality, always winning tackles, putting his heart on his sleeve for his team and going out there being an attacker for the team. What was it about Stevenage that made you want to sign? I’m here to study for my Masters at Hertfordshire University but Stevenage brought that intensity and overall game that I’m used to at home, so I’m glad that Fadi came to one of my practices and saw me and I can just get more experience and knowledge and learn the English side to the game.

THE BOSS Keith Millen was appointed manager of Carlisle at the end of October 2021. As a player, Millen, served with Brentford and Palace, and went on to compete for the Bees for almost 11 seasons, scoring 20 goals in close to 400 appearances. He moved to Watford at the beginning of 1994 and stayed at Vicarage Road for just over five years, earning status as a favourite when he helped to steady the ship and avoid relegation during his first season with the Hornets. Two successful promotion campaigns cemented his status with the fans as he became an everpresent at the heart of the back line. He ended his playing career at Ashton Gate, with 75 games in four seasons with Bristol City, and he then made the smooth transition into the coaching set-up with the club. Two spells as caretaker manager followed, and he was made permanent manager following the unexpected departure of Steve Coppell in October 2010. He held that post for a year, before moving on to work under Neil Warnock and Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace, via interim coaching appointments at Spurs and Portsmouth. He had three separate spells as caretaker with Palace. Another caretaker period came during his stay with MK Dons, when Dan Micciche left by mutual consent in April 2018.

ONE TO WATCH Former-Preston defender Jack Armer joined the Blues on a one-year deal in August 2020. An impressive first season earned him a new two-year deal in May 2021 which keeps him with the Cumbrians until the summer of 2023. Armer, a Scotland under-19 international, came through the ranks with his hometown club where he went on to captain the under-18 side. Renowned for having a solid left foot, he has been utilised as a left-sided centre half and as a left back, and he enjoyed a fruitful loan spell with Lancaster where he earned a regular starting place in the team.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS WELCOME This afternoon I’m pleased to welcome our old friends from Carlisle United. How I remember the Conference National play-off final at Stoke’s Britannia Stadium in 2005, when The Cumbrian’s outnumbered our own ‘Barmy Army’ by a factor of about 3-1. I also remember a certain Peter Murphy who broke our hearts by scoring the only goal of the match on the 21st minute. Peter Murphy - where are you now? (actually he’s currently the manager at Annan Athletic in the Scottish League Two). Huge respect to the Carlisle supporters who have made the treck south this afternoon, and to those of their London Supporters’ Branch who have made the brief journey north. Welcome all.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (FSA) Supporters’ clubs have been around since the very early days of the sport, organising fans and raising funds etc. However, this year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the National Federation of Football Supporters’ Clubs (NatFed), and credit is duly accorded to a certain Herbert Kendall who was the driving force behind the initiative. Herbert was the original founder of Coventry City’s Supporters’ Club and he made a point of visiting other supporters’ clubs to encourage them to join a Federation. The result was that, in 1921, 16 clubs founded NatFed.

www.stevenagefc.com

Herbert has a just claim to be regarded as the founder of our national movement. The NatFed motto “to help not hinder” effectively summed up the philosophy of the supporters’ clubs of the day - 100 years ago.

INTER-CITY BORO Our next two awaydays are to Salford on December 18th and to Swindon on December 29th. For Salford it’s a 9:30am departure at a cost of £35 for members and £40 for non-members. For Swindon it’s an 11:30am start and costs £25 for members and £30 for non-members. Concessions apply for both trips. To book you can either Herbert Kendall visit our website page HERE or phone John Carroll on (01438) 814285 between 6.00pm and 9.00pm. Get thee there with Boro the Bear and get behind Tisdale’s Terriers at both Salford and Swindon.

MEMBERSHIP Don’t forget, it’s not too late to consider buying an SA membership for family or friends as a ‘stocking filler’ this Christmas. It’s so easy to do. Details can be found HERE. Picture the scene of them receiving an SA membership card on Christmas Day priceless! LLOYD BRISCOE Chair - Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association
