In the 62nd minute Carlisle fans may have felt a sense of damage limitation after Hallam Hope took down Gurthie in the box; causing referee Carl Boyeson to point to the spot. Guthrie didn’t miss his opportunity to secure his brace by slotting his penalty to the left of Carlisle ‘keeper Adam Collin. Stevenage had put in a dominant performance, in taking three points and it allowed Boro to dream of a chance of the play offs.

Carlisle made the trip down to Stevenage in the hope of nudging themselves up the table, whilst also hoping for a chance to push a potential fellow play-off contender a little further adrift from the top seven. Carlisle came into the game eighth in the league with only a single point separating them from a play off space. But Stevenage were determined to mount a play-off push of their own. And Boro’ made an early breakthrough through midfielder Arthur Iontton, scoring his first senior goal on only 16 minutes.

They continued to battle on past half time and eventually gave themselves security in the game with a second goal, supplied by the creator of their first; Kurtis Guthrie who headed home a corner that was whipped in by QPR loanee, Ilias Chair.

17 WWW.STEVENAGEFC.COM FAN FOCUS INTERVIEW

CURRENT PLAYER:

Carl Rutherford (slo@stevenagefc.com) and Alex Potter (dslo@stevenagefc.com)

BEST MEMORIES: Honestly so so many! Beating Newcastle and Sheffield Wednesday. THAT promotion game at Kiddi when we’d finally, FINALLY achieved League status...but I think it would have to be the first competitive game at the new Wembley. That come back from 2-0 down and the goals from Moro, the legend that is Mitchell Cole and Dobbo was just unbelievable! It still brings tears to my eyes thinking about it and gives me goosebumps!!

FIRST BORO GAME: No wonder I was hooked from day one! 5-0 drubbing of Accrington Stanley at Broadhall Way Jason Goodliffe had a worldie and scored 2 that day! But the poster boy at the time was Anthony Elding.

ALL TIME FAVOURITE PLAYER: SUCH a hard question!!! Anyone from that promotion team! It was such a special time with such a special relationship between fans and team. Boydy must have a Obviouslymention. Ash, of course Lairdy... but it would have to be our Captain Fantastic Mark Roberts. You couldnt meet a more dutiful, earnest, hardworking, loyal bloke. I’ve run out of superlatives.. but anyone who knows, knows ❤

Bossie has legendary status because of our shared history.. but I think I’ll plump for Dan Sweeney who has been immense so far this season. FAVOURITE SHIRT: Controversial maybe ..but I think the ‘Tyre Pro’ shirt of 2013/14 season. WHY I LOVE BORO: Because of all the memories and people mentioned above, and those couple of seasons with that special team when players, their families and fans all pulled together to punch above our weight because we all shared that common experience....and the desire to find those heights again. The camaraderie and banter of some special friends in the West Stand and the usual Thanks‘faces’.forparticipating in this, Jenni, and thank you for your long serving support of The Boro!

enni Harris is a commited West Stand stalwart, having supported Boro for many years, as evidenced below. She is a well known face to our regular supporters and staff. Jenni is a big animal lover, and regularly shares photos of cute dogs on Twitter!

FIRST AWAY GAME: The trophy final against Carlisle Utd at the Britannia Stadium. I remember the lady at the snack bar saying that she wanted us to win because we played in red and white stripes like Stoke! Sadly not to be... I still don’t know how AJ didn’t save that shot from Murphy!

18 FCSTEVENAGE V UTDCARLISLE BORO HISTORY

1991 Boreham Wood 0-3 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Division One (Cardines 3)

ON THIS DAY: 20 AUGUST We can look back through the archive and see that 20 August is a date of fine fortune – two or three blips aside. Sure, nobody’s perfect – right? In all, Boro’ have been pressed into action on nine occasions on this date between 1987 and 2019. The yield is five wins, one draw, and three defeats. And, right now, our past endeavours on this specific date are bookended by losses at both ends of that timeline – Harlow Town in 1987 and Bradford City in 2019 (both away). Not that going on the road is usually a problem on 20 August. Our 1994 trip to Stafford Rangers will no doubt forever remain in the collective memories of fans who were there at the time. Boro’ showed no nerves in our first-ever game at Conference level. Steve Conroy, Phil Simpson, Dean Williams were on target as we romped to a three-goal win. We soon found out that it wasn’t all sunshine and lollipops at that level, but what a way to get things started all the same. Boro’ have won two of the four home matches played previously on 20 August. One of those came in 2016, when we recorded our first-ever home victory at the expense of Luton Town. Our guests actually took a first half lead. But that was cancelled out shortly after the break by Connor Hunte. It looked as if the Hatters would claim the win; hitting the bar and a shot blocked on the line. But a late, great breakaway saw Matt Godden grab it for us in the 96th minute.

1990 Stevenage Borough 2-1 Collier Row, Vauxhall Football League Division Two North (Hughes, Ferdinand)

1988 Harlow Town 3-1 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North (Timpson)

Today is our fourth successive home

2005 Southport 3-2 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Elding, Stamp)

1994 Stafford Rangers 0-3 Stevenage Borough, GM Vauxhall Conference (Conroy, Simpson, Williams)

2016 Stevenage 2-1 Luton Town, Sky Bet League Two (Hunte, Godden)

2019 Stevenage 0-1 Bradford City, Sky Bet League Two match on this date. The run so far has been draw – win – defeat. Will we be back to the start with a draw? Will most recent habits die hard and deliver a defeat? Or will we shake up the order and nab a win? You’ll know the answer to that one in as little as one-and-ahalf hours.

IT’S CARLISLE UNITED AGAIN… After our double defeat to today’s guests last season, there’s work to be done to get our head-to-head record onto an even keel. The Cumbrians currently stand on 12 victories from 24 past encounters, with Boro’ lagging on eight. It does, of course, mean that we’ve come home with something as many times as we haven’t. But it would be nice to push our win count a little closer to double figures at the Lamex this afternoon. Our recent form against the Cumbrians is less than exemplary. Our 3-1 victory at the Lamex in March 2021 sits bang in the middle of four defeats – two last season as mentioned, and two that date back into the early stages of the 2019-20 campaign (it’s worth noting that we never made it to Brunton Park during that Covid-hit season). The Lamex isn’t such an unhappy hunting ground for them either. It’s five wins, five defeats and two draws here.

ON BOTH SIDES… You’d have to put in some fair miles to have turned out for both Boro’ and Carlisle United – but that’s not stopped a select few from doing so. Out of the handful of lads to do so, there are a few names that immediately leap at you. Carlisle United was the next port of call for Paul Farman in 2020; the ex-Boro’ stopper opting to swap the Lamex for Brunton Park on a one-year contract. Making 75 appearances for us and then 45 for the Cumbrians, Farman was on the move again in summer 2021 when he moved to current club (and relative neighbours) Barrow. In stark contrast to moving from Boro’ to Carlisle United, Jamal Campbell-Ryce did things the other way around. His time at Carlisle United was immediately followed by a switch to Boro’. It wasn’t a particularly productive time in the North West, however; the winger making nine outings during a threemonth stay at the club before moving Wesouth.then have Francois Zoko too. In among the goals during his time at the Lamex, the Ivorian striker was a huge hit with Carlisle United fans too. In fact, the club was moved to offer the lad a new deal not long after joining to keep a gaggle of first and second tier clubs at bay. In the end, Zoko would never make it higher than the third tier.

MAGIC MOMENT: Sky Bet League Two 25 April 2015 It’s not our biggest win against Carlisle United at home. Nor is it perhaps the performance that sticks most in the mind. But this slender win in April 2015 was a significant one. As was so often the case under GW, Boro’ were on a strong run during the second half of the 2014-5 League Two campaign. And we came into this one, our final home fixture of term, off the back of a sixmatch unbeaten run. The Cumbrians weren’t setting the world alight and were far too close to the relegation dogfight for their liking. For us, the aim was to bounce back after relegation from League One. And, to be fair, we were all but over the line in terms of a playoff place. But

STEVENAGE FC1 CARLISLE0

it still had to be signed, sealed, and delivered. Thanks to Dean Parrett’s 47th-minute finish from the edge of the box, it was; Boro’ recording a narrow win – but three points nonetheless and a guaranteed playoff berth. By Pete Hayman courtesy of boroguide.co.uk

My name’s Jodie, I’m 22, I play centre midfield and I’ve just finished my degree at uni. I was born in Stevenage but grew up in Stotfold just down the road so I’m quite local. I got into football through my dad and brother who are football crazy so I was always playing football out in the garden or on the street with my brother and his friends.

For me, Jordan Nobbs, I used to watch her when I could. Obviously she plays the same position as me so I try and model my game on her and she also had a lot of setbacks but she’s never given up. She’s very motivated to keep going and win more trophies. WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION?

From a perspectivepersonalI’dlike to get a few more minutes as I was out injured for a lot of last season and hopefully score a few goals and get a few assists for the team? YOU DECIDED TO STAY FOR ANOTHER SEASON AT STEVENAGE, WHY WAS THAT? The team morale here is really good and everyone gets on really well. We’ve got great coaches, social media, our physios – we just get given so much and it’s really good to be around all the girls here.

25 WWW.STEVENAGEFC.COM STEVENAGE FC WOMEN

It’s cringey but I’ll say my family because they inspire me to push myself, keep going and stay motivated. They used to take me to football training 2 or 3 times a week so I probably wouldn’t be where I am today without them. WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO ACHIEVE THIS SEASON?

Carlisle lad Paul Simpson returned for his second spell in the hotseat at Brunton Park in February 2022, with the club deeply embroiled in a relegation battle. There was an immediate upturn in results, with the club securing league safety with a month to spare. Talks quickly followed and a three-year deal, keeping him with Carlisle until at least the summer of 2025, was agreed.

Striker Kristian Dennis signed for the Blues on an 18-month deal during the January 2022 transfer window, which keeps him at Brunton Park until the end of the 2022/23 season. Dennis began his career at Macclesfield Town, but left the club in 2010 going on to play for Woodley Sports, Mossley and Curzon Ashton. His impressive spell with Curzon saw him bag 72 goals in two seasons, which earned him a three-year spell with Stockport County. A return to Macclesfield on loan brought him 27 goals in 44 appearances, and that caught the eye of Chesterfield, who secured his services in the summer of 2016. Two seasons with the Spireites added 31 goals in 90 appearances to the tally, and there was more to come with 22 goals in 64 outings for Notts County. He has already netted an impressive goal a game in the first four matches for the Cumbrians while also scoring against Bolton in pre-season action.

It’s an early start (9:00am), but for just £30, members can get there and back safely and secure in the comfort of a luxury bus. It’s going to be an amazing day, so get thee there with Boro the bear.
