irstly, I would like to welcome everyone from Charlton Athletic and Ben Garner to tonight’s Carabao Cup game at The Lamex Stadium. Looking back on Saturday and the long journey north to Gateshead in the FA Cup, our main objective was to be in the hat for the next round. Over ninety minutes we deserved to go through, but we know it could have been a much more comfortable day. The boys showed great character when the game was drawn level to go back in front. The sending off didn’t make things easier for us - but after we were back in front, we were confident of our ability to see the game through.
“We can create new history for Stevenage Football Club, and it starts tonight” We know Charlton Athletic are going to pose a different threat, and it’ll be a completely different game at home in front of our own supporters. When you talk about big clubs in League One, everyone looks at the Sheffield Wednesdays and Ipswich Towns – everyone looks at Charlton Athletic too. It will be a fantastic occasion under the lights at The Lamex Stadium. Our supporters were brilliant against Northampton and have been all season. We’re going to need that again tonight against Charlton and against Hartlepool this Saturday. Between now and January, we need to stay in this promotion mix. If we stay in this promotion mix, we’ll strengthen in January. That could be by working smarter or by adding the odd player or two to the group. We get fantastic
support – everything that could be done for us from the senior level gets talked about and then delivered, thanks to our Chairman. This club has never been in the third round of the League Cup before. We have the home advantage; we need our supporters to be loud and we’ll need to be at our best to make it even further. We can create new history for Stevenage Football Club, and it starts tonight.

struggling Stevenage hosted table toppers Charlton Athletic who were yet to taste defeat in the league. Boro were quite the opposite as Graham Westley’s men were looking to turn things around after four defeats in a row. The game couldn’t have started better for Boro as Michael Bostwick played a pass into Stacy Long’s path, the midfielder took a chance from 20 yards out and was rewarded as the ball nestled into the back of the net. The goal would have been made an even harder pill to swallow as
Long was on Charlton’s books as a youth player. The visitors tried to overturn Stevenage’s lead and they may have done so if it wasn’t for home ‘keeper Chris Day making a great stop to prevent a Dale Stephens effort. Charlton’s agony was only increased by Rhoys Wiggins firing a shot that looked goal-bound, only for the effort to just go wide of the post. The game fell further into Stevenage’s grip during the second half as they were the side that looked closer to scoring with an effort from Jon Ashton. The full-time whistle blew and a valiant effort from Stevenage had seen them hold on to the three points and complete a surprise victory as Charlton lost for the first time since April of 2011. HISTORY
16
ON THIS DAY: 08 NOVEMBER Boro’ are in cup action tonight and it’s just as well we’re not on the road. Our record away from Broadhall Way on this date in history is rather inauspicious – losing to Leek Town in 1997 and then, in what seems quite like a stark contrast, at Leicester in 2008. What became of the Foxes? Anyway, back at home, we’re currently unbeaten on this date… It sounds like a grand statement. Dig a little deeper, however, and we’re by no means claiming we’re indomitable here when the calendar strikes 8 November. It’s just that we’ve had some rather notable outings; two of which came in the heat of cup battle. And, yes, that does include 2016’s Checkatrade Trophy group game against Southend United. Arguably the stand-out result on this date so far in Boro’s history is the 2-1 win over Stockport County in 2003’s FA Cup Round One tie. Dino Maamria scored twice as we dumped out the Hatters, who (at the time) were two divisions above us in what we now call League One. It might even count as Boro’s last great cupset as a Conference team? And we can’t overlook Boro’s 2-1 home win over Berkhamsted Town in the Herts Senior Cup nearly 30 years ago. That, if nothing else, completes a hattrick of cup victories at home on this date that we’d love to add to here tonight.
1980 S tevenage Borough 3-0 Newport Pagnell Town, United Counties League Division One (Hughes, P Gittings, Metcalfe) 1982 Stevenage Borough 1-1 Rothwell Town, United Counties League Premier Division (Lear) 1986 Stevenage Borough 3-3 Staines Town, Vauxhall Opel League Division One (B Marshall, Watkins, Myers) 1993 Stevenage Borough 2-1 Berkhamsted Town, Herts Senior Cup R1 (Debnam, Brown) 1997 Leek Town 2-1 Stevenage Borough, Football Conference (Smith) 2003 Stevenage Borough 2-1 Stockport County, FA Cup R1 (Maamria 2) 2008 Leicester City 3-0 Stevenage Borough, FA Cup R1 2016 Stevenage 4-0 Southend United, Checkatrade Trophy South Group G (Schumacher, Godden, Liburd 2)
IT’S CHARLTON ATHLETIC AGAIN… When it comes to us and the Addicks, our paths only crossed for one season; Boro’ moving on up into League One at a time when our guests from southeast London were fighting to get back into the second tier. Now, we’re no
MAGIC MOMENT: npower League One – 15 October 2011
1 STEVENAGE FC 0 CHARLTON ATHLETIC Let’s focus on brighter times for the moment, however. Chris Powell’s side were already setting the pace in League One when they came to ours in mid-October 2011. It was the first-ever competitive meeting between the two sides – and it remains one to remember for Boro’. It took just 11 minutes for us to put Addicks’ unbeaten record in real jeopardy. For goalscorer Stacy Long, it was a sweet moment against the team he started his career at. The Addicks had their chances. So too did we; Long going close to his second just before the break, before Jon Ashton nearly doubled our advantage in the second half. Boro’, however, held on. And the Addicks had finally been beaten. By Pete Hayman courtesy of boroguide.co.uk

experts on cause-and-effect. But it was our maiden campaign in League One that saw the Addicks romp to a title win that saw ‘em back in the Championship. We came close to following them up via the playoffs too. That season saw us trade blows as each side picked up a home win against the other. And that’s about as far as we can get without being obliged to mention the only other encounter between our two sides. Yeah, we should do our visitors the courtesy of acknowledging our 201819 Checkatrade Trophy group stage fixture. Make whatever argument you wish about the importance of the tournament. But an 8-0 home defeat (our record defeat) is bad any way you look at it. Never again, eh?
ON BOTH SIDES… Out of all the players to pull on both shirts, Alex Gilbey will be more familiar than most. The midfielder has made a real impression since coming to us on loan from The Valley. And maybe there’s some useful intelligence to share too? The list of other names to have both Boro’ and Charlton Athletic in their career history has a few names that jump out. George Boyd, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, Barry Fuller, the aforementioned Stacy Long, and Lawrie Wilson are all examples – as too is Kevin Lisbie, who is still remembered very fondly by Addicks fans. His impact here? Not quite as formidable. Stacy Long

ello and good evening everyone. I’m new to the Club, having taken the lead coaching role of the Youth Development Phase on the 5th September. Since then, my team of coaches and I, have worked on, and implemented some new ways of working that we believe will help in the development of our young players. These new initiatives include player Individual Development Plans (IDP) that link their learning holistically to their schoolwork, football and family life. The IDP aims to identify player’s areas for development whilst providing the player with a positive, challenging and enjoyable learning environment, with an emphasis on developing them as individuals who can excel equally as footballers and people. To help this development process, we have bolstered the Youth Development Phase games programme by entering the Under 15s into both the East Cup and Floodlit cup respectively. Our first game in each of these competitions were hard fought games seeing our young players showing resilience, grit and football quality to beat Cambridge United 5-2, away, in the
first game of the East Cup and a gutsy 3-3 draw away at Ipswich in the first round of the Floodlit Cup. Above these additional Cup commitments, we have challenged the players throughout the phase against Category 1 elite opposition such as Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham and Manchester United. As a retired Army Officer, we felt it was only fitting to put the lads through their paces. Only last week we invited soldiers from 16 Air Assault Brigade to the Academy at Shephalbury to conduct a Community Engagement Programme that included arduous activity, problem solving and basic life support. Academy players from U13 to U18 embarked on a day that will live long in their memory, I’m sure. Utilising my previous academy experience at Southampton FC, non-league success of winning the Ryman League and London Cup, along with guiding the Army U23s to several Inter Service Championships. I feel that Stevenage FC is the right Club for me to develop and better myself and others whilst delivering success in developing players into the Professional Phase at the Club and beyond. t has been a quiet couple of weeks for us without a game due to the weather and cup competitions for other teams, however, the matches will soon start coming thick and fast for us as we enter the winter period. Throughout the months of November and December, we are in league and County Cup action, with a number of home fixtures back-to-back; 6 in total, before the Christmas break. We are on the lookout for matchday volunteers to help with the turnstiles, stewarding and media duties. In addition, we would also welcome mascots. So if you have a daughter or son under the age of 10, please get in touch with us and you could walk out with the team and enjoy an unrivalled

If you are interested in being a matchday volunteer or would like to be a mascot at a home game, please email womenandgirls@stevenagefc.com. Tickets are on sale for our home games and can be purchased online here. We play our home games at the Hertfordshire FA, County Ground in Letchworth and we look forward to welcoming you and hearing that famous ‘Boro roar as we look to gather momentum over the coming weeks to push on to promotion back into the FA WNL. FORM GUIDE League One Charlton come to Boro this evening in ninth spot, 18 points adrift of top of the table Plymouth and some four points away from the play-off scramble. Remarkably their 4-1 FA Cup win at home to Coalville on Saturday was their sixth
game at The Valley in the past seven games, and it has been part of a run which has helped to rescue their season. After a mixed start, a disappointing September saw Charlton slip back with two league defeats and three draws in five games. But three victories in a row in October has helped steady the ship and keep the Addicks competitive, although remarkably their 1-0 win at Shrewsbury is still their only league success on their travels this term. Their journey to this stage of the EFL Cup began in August with a 5-3 penalty win at home to QPR following a 1-1 draw. In the second round Diallang Jaiyesimi was on target at Walsall in a rare 1-0 away win. Charlton have also reached the next round of the EFL Trophy when a 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton U-21 put them in second place behind Colchester whom they lost to 2-1.

MEET THE BOSS:
Chuks Aneke rejoined the Addicks in January 2022, putting pen-topaper on a threeand-a-half year deal. Born in Newham, the forward came through the ranks at Arsenal. While with the Gunners, Aneke took in loan spells with Boro Preston North End and Crewe Alexandra, before moving to Belgian Pro League side Zulte Waregem in June 2014 upon the expiration of his Arsenal contract. After spending two seasons in Belgium, making 50 appearances and scoring six goals, Aneke returned to England with MK Dons. Following an injury-plagued debut campaign in Buckinghamshire, the striker played a pivotal role in helping the Dons earn promotion to back to League One at the first time of asking, bagging 19 goals in the 2018/19 campaign. Aneke then joined Charlton on a free transfer in the summer of 2019. The England youth international would go on to make 62 appearances, scoring 17 times, across two seasons in SE7, before following former Addicks boss Lee Bowyer to Championship outfit Birmingham City in June 2021. The frontman enjoyed 10 outings for the Addicks in the latter half of the 2021/22 campaign, bagging four goals.
Ben Garner was appointed Men’s First-Team Manager in June 2022, putting pen-to-paper on a three-year deal at The Valley. Garner arrived in SE7 with an array of coaching experience across the footballing pyramid spanning more than 15 years. Having spent seven years coaching Crystal Palace’s academy, Garner was promoted to First-Team Coach in the 2012/13 campaign, helping the Eagles gain promotion back to the Premier League. While at Selhurst Park, he attained his UEFA Pro Licence. Garner joined West Bromwich Albion as a First-Team Coach in October 2015 before being promoted to the role of Assistant Head Coach just 11 months later. Following a short stint in India as Steve Coppell’s Assistant Head Coach at ATK, he landed his first managerial role with Bristol Rovers in December 2019. Swindon Town appointed Garner as their Head Coach in July 2021 and the 42-year-old impressed immediately, leading his young Robins side to the League Two play-off semi-finals having scored more goals, had more shots, more shots on target and more possession than any other team in the fourth tier in 2021/22.

WELCOME On behalf of the Stevenage SA I bid welcome to all the Charlton supporters who have come to Stevenage on this autumnal evening. I hope you have a great time here, and a safe journey home after the game.
On October 20th, the much-heralded “Fans Led Review” about the state of football was debated in Parliament. Labour MP Clive Betts encouraged the Government to accept the recommendations of the review, citing the suggestion of appointing an independent regulator, fairer distribution of funding and an end to parachute payments. Local MP’s on record as supporting the review include Hitchin MP Bim Afolami and Luton South MP (and big Stevenage fan) Rachel Reeves.
THE BORO BUS “Cleethorpes - here we come . . . “ On Saturday November 19th, the Supporters’ coach journeys to Grimsby Town - although their Blundell Park stadium is actually situated in next door Cleethorpes! At a cost of just £25, the bus departs Stevenage at 9.30am for the journey to North Lincolnshire. Get thee there with Boro the Bear by booking on-line here.
COLIN “PADDY” POWELL Although born in Hendon, Paddy came to Stevenage when he was two years old. He attended the Barclay School and played football for the Barclavians, the junior feeder club to Stevenage Town FC. At the age of 17, Paddy broke into George Curtis’s 1st team, playing alongside the likes of Johnny Brooks, Dickie England, Ray Peacock and John Hiner. When Stevenage Town folded in 1968, the majority of the team followed Tommy
Bickerstaff to Cambridge City. However, Paddy, along with Delvin Stevens, went to Barnet. Paddy did well at Barnet and quickly became a fans’ favourite. He was recognised by Charlton and moved to The Valley where he went on to play over 350 games and scoring 30 goals for The Addicks. Paddy’s ongoing career in football saw him play for Gillingham, Dartford, Bromley and a spell in New England. He even went on to manage Margate. In 1992, Paddy was appointed groundsman at Charlton, a post he held for some 25 years. In May this year, Paddy was honoured to have a multi-use games area named after him at the Riverston School in London SE12. These days, Paddy still represents Charlton as a match-day host. ‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME’ A message about anti-social and criminal behaviour To mark the new season, we want to make you aware of new measures being taken across all of football to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience. We are supporting strong action from the FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle anti-social and criminal behaviours that put all of us at risk. This reflects the seriousness of the risks to fans and staff – pyros can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius and cause lifechanging injuries, while entering the pitch endangers players, managers and match officials. We know those who commit these illegal acts do not represent the majority of supporters. #LoveFootball #ProtectTheGame
