ith just four games left of the 2015-16 season Boro were at last heading for some peace after a turbulent campaign in which relegation had always been close at hand. Following the end of the Teddy Sheringham experiment and the entrance of Darren Sarll, Boro finally go the point they needed at home to Bristol Rovers to secure their Football League place.

BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 20 APRIL Over the years, it’s always been late on in the season by 20 April. But there’s always work still to be done – even if the important matters of promotion and relegation have already been settled. If nothing else, pride is still at stake until all is said and done. And that’s a lesson we can learn from two games played by Boro’ on this date. In 1991, Cloughie’s Boro’ side had laid waste to Vauxhall Football League Division Two North. The title was ours, while the 100-goal milestone had been passed earlier in the month. Not that it did Hornchurch any good. A crushing 7-0 win over the Urchins took us to 100 league points for a recordbreaking campaign that is unlikely to be bettered. And how about the Class of 2010; fresh from securing the title at Kidderminster Harriers just three days before? With records up for grabs, Graham Westley’s men weren’t letting up. A professional display in the north east saw us return from Gateshead with all three points courtesy of Scott Laird’s penalty. Back in 1996, meanwhile, we still had a job to do in the Conference title race. Woking were still waiting for us to fall at the final hurdle. Goals from Barry Hayles and Stuart Beevor meant that Bath City wouldn’t be that hurdle; our 2-1 win that day – our second away win on the bounce – taking us tantalisingly close to the big prize. It hasn’t all been hunky dory on 20 April, though. Wayne Turner’s side may have booked a place in the 2002 FA Trophy final. But Chester City were on hand to remind us that we weren’t yet done with the league that season; thrashing us 5-1 at the Deva. It was also our third straight league defeat in

16

the six days that followed our FAT semifinal second leg. And a more worrying trend has emerged on this day since joining the Football League. Both in 2013 at Swindon and in 2018 at Coventry, we conceded three goals and had a man sent off; Dani Lopez at the County Ground and Luke Wilkinson at the Ricoh. At least we got on the scoresheet in the latter; a certain Alex Revell scoring in our 3-1 defeat that day. 1982 Chelmsford City 3-0 Stevenage Borough, Eastern Floodlit Cup Semi-Final 1985 Saffron Walden Town 3-0 Stevenage Borough, Servowarm League Division Two North 1991 Stevenage Borough 7-0 Hornchurch, Vauxhall Football League Division Two North (Hughes 2, Debnam, Luque, Blackwell, Marshall, OG) 1992 Stevenage Borough 2-0 Tooting & Mitcham United, Diadora League Division One (Roberts, Marshall) 1993 Grays Athletic 2-1 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Premier Division (Gittings) 1996 Bath City 1-2 Stevenage Borough, GM Vauxhall Conference (Hayles, Beevor) 2002 Chester City 5-1 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Jackson) 2010 Gateshead 0-1 Stevenage Borough, Blue Square Premier (Laird) 2013 Swindon Town 3-0 Stevenage Borough, npower League One 2018 Coventry City 3-1 Stevenage Borough, Sky Bet League Two (Revell)

Stevenage FC v Cheltenham Town

YOU AGAIN? CHELTENHAM TOWN If it’s palaver you like, history suggests this could well be the fixture for you. Back in the early days of our head-tohead with Cheltenham Town, there was plenty of it to go around. It started on Valentine’s Day in 1998; Boro’ travelling up to Whaddon Road looking to avenge a 2-1 home defeat to the newlypromoted Robins just before Christmas. No-one, however, could have imagined a bomb scare would push back kick-off that afternoon. Thousands of fans were forced to spend some time by watching a local amateur game across the road. Eventually, our game could go ahead as planned. Mind you, the 1-1 draw would prove far less dramatic than the build up. Into the following season and Boro’ would end up meeting the Robins FIVE times. And it doesn’t include an FA Trophy Round Four replay that had to be abandoned due to heavy snow. It angered local MP Nigel Jones so much that he put down a motion in Parliament calling on the FA to chuck us

www.stevenagefc.com

out of the tournament. If he’d have waited a week, the Robins would complete the job on penalties. Back then, the Robins were only paying a flying visit to the Conference; promoted into – up from – the division inside two seasons. And not once could we get the better of them. It took nearly 14 years for us to finally break that duck; a 4-0 home win in February 2011 making sure that happened in some style. After going up to and coming back down from League One, it was now our turn to dominate. A 5-1 win at the Lamex in November 2014 kick-started an eightmatch unbeaten run; seven of which were victories. We’ve not had it all our own way in the last couple of seasons. But it’s a long time since the Robins won here. And we hope it stays that way.

ACADEMY

ith the academy season drawing to a close it’s a great time to look back on reflect on what we have achieved, still to achieve and look to improve further the academy experience of players and staff alike. Certainly the challenges we have faced as an organisation have been huge and it would have been easy to use the pandemic as a reason to sit back and wait for things to settle but I’ve been thrilled with the work ethic of the academy staff. Everyone has gone well beyond what was expected and have used the time to research, learn and develop so that when the players returned we were at it from day one.

www.stevenagefc.com

The progression the academy makes each season is there for all to see and is only possible as a result of the relentless support of the Chairman, the board and the 1st team staff. Our job is to match that support with outcomes - player appearances or player sales and to date we are up to speed. But as I keep saying to all the staff the time to push barriers is when you are doing well and the next 12 months need to better than the previous 12 months. Development and progression are key words for academy players and staff alike and our aim is to be known as the best academy in the area - we are on the right tracks. ROBBIE O’ KEEFE – Academy manager

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? I’m 31 years old, I work as a support worker in Stevenage and part-time supervisor for JD. Very family orientated and I’m a Tottenham supporter. My Uncle’s doing! WHAT CLUBS HAVE YOU PREVIOUSLY PLAYED FOR? Over the years I’ve been approached by different teams, but I’ve always wanted to stay with Stevenage, I’ve been a Stevenage player for my entire footballing career. WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL? Outside of football you would usually catch me at work, especially with the kind of job I do and with the pandemic. Out of lockdown, spending time with family, exercising, day trips and different activities i.e. cinema, shopping (mainly for trainers) HOW DO YOU FIND JUGGLING FOOTBALL, TRAINING AND YOUR DAY JOB? This can be a struggle at times, as some training days I come from a day at work. The rushing about can be quite stressful, but when I get on the pitch it’s worth it. CAN YOU TELL ME WHO YOUR FOOTBALLING IDOL OR ROLE MODEL WAS WHILST GROWING UP AND WHY? My role model will always be by mum, she single-handedly raised 4 kids, and always worked hard for us to have what we needed. She’s a super hero. My uncle has been a big influence in my footballing career, he had a ball at my feet as soon as I could walk. To this day he attends matches, alongside my brother, nan and partner. #biggestsupporters

24

Stevenage FC v Cheltenham Town

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE FEMALE FOOTBALLER AND WHY? I’ve always admired Steph Houghton, you can see her love, passion, and dedication for the game. She seems very driven and is an inspiration to young footballers. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHT OR ACHIEVEMENT THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? Seeing the changes of the club throughout the years and recognition/ support that the women in football are now receiving worldwide. The Burger Queen sponsorship is a prime example. IT HAS BEEN A STOP START SEASON SO FAR AND AFTER LAST SEASON BEING DECLARED NULL VOID. HOW DO YOU FEEL THE SEASON HAS GONE FOR YOU PERSONALLY? It’s been a crazy and disappointing time with the seasons stopping and starting. The season didn’t go as expected, but we are back on the training ground which will enable the team to build and work on certain areas. HOW WERE YOU KEEPING FIT AND ACTIVE DURING LOCKDOWN? We’ve been doing zoom sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday. I also try to do a leg/upper body session once a week as well as a run. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR MATCHES AND WHAT DOES YOUR PRE-MATCH ROUTINE LOOK LIKE? I like to get a good night’s sleep and set out my clothes /bag for the morning. Have a bottle of water when I wake up, followed by a hot bath, get dressed then have some breakfast.

www.stevenagefc.com

DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE-MATCH SUPERSTITIONS? I wouldn’t say I do. I eat a banana before I play, well force myself to as I dislike them and have some pre-workout whilst warming up FAVOURITE GOAL YOU’VE SCORED? Header from a corner, down through the legs of a goalkeeper. DO YOU HAVE A GO TO CELEBRATION FOR WHEN YOU SCORE? I don’t really have a celebration, just running around high fiving my teammates in disbelief. As a centre back I don’t score as often as I would like to. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FOOTBALL TRICK OR SKILL MOVE TO PULL OUT? Wouldn’t say I’m a trickster to be honest, but I’m known to pull out a last minute challenge. AS WE’VE BEEN IN LOCKDOWN, WHAT TV SERIES ARE YOU CURRENTLY, OR HAVE BEEN, BINGE WATCHING? I’ve not long finished Behind Her Eyes and The One. Currently still stuck on finishing Riverdale. WHO MAKES YOUR ULTIMATE DREAM TEAM XI [OF FEMALE FOOTBALLERS]? GK - Karen Bardsley Defence- Steph Houghton, Millie Bright, Alex Scott, Lucy bronze Midfield- Karen carney, Fara Williams, Jill Scott, Rachel Yankey Forward- Fran Kirby, Ellen White

e all have mental health in the same way that we have physical health. Both can fluctuate over time which means they both need looking after. In fact, the relationship between the two are intertwined and there’s good evidence that getting more physically active can have real benefits on our mental wellbeing. One programme which directly aims to target people in improving both their mental and physical health is the Get Set to Go programme which we run in partnership with Mind in Mid Herts. Now that restrictions have lifted, we have been able to restart this programme which consists of football sessions that take place on Wednesday evenings from 7 – 8pm at

Shephalbury Sports Academy. The sessions are designed for anyone aged 16 or above who wants to have fun playing football within a friendly, non-judgemental environment. They are for all abilities and can be adapted to suit a variety of needs. Best of all, the sessions are free, and thanks to a recent extension in funding from Stevenage Borough Council, we will be running these sessions for the next 12 months. Exercise supports positive wellbeing, and by joining in with a session such as Get Set to Go you can work towards improving your mental health and wellbeing, whilst being supported by a friendly group of people and staff from both Mind in Mid Herts and Stevenage FC Foundation. WELCOME CLUB MATTERS For a club which was founded way back in 1887, Cheltenham Town have certainly packed a lot into the past 30 years or so. Their early days were spent in local football and the Birmingham Combination, but things moved quickly in the 1930s as they both entered the more powerful Southern League (1935) and also moved to their current home at Whaddon Road (1932). Although they reached the Conference

forerunner of the Alliance Premier League in the 1980s, The Robins as they are known, struggled to maintain their place at the top tier of non league football until the arrival of Steve Cotterill as boss. In 1998 he guided them to FA Trophy success and a year later they won the conference, and promotion to the Football League. In this phase Cheltenham twice were promoted to and then relegated from the third tier but in 2015 the trapdoor unexpectedly opened back to non league. This setback didn’t last long however and under the well travelled Gary Johnson they became the first club for 26 years to secure an immediate return and they are

now in their fifth consecutive season in Division Two.

THE BOSS Michael Duff was appointed Cheltenham Town manager in September 2018. His appointment saw him undertake his first senior managerial role in football having previously been in charge of the under-23s and under-18s squads at Burnley. It also saw him return to the club where he started a playing career that saw him make over 700 appearances and represent Northern Ireland at international level. After breaking into the Robins set-up as a young defender in the nineties, he became a first team regular at Cheltenham, scoring the winning goal against Yeovil Town in 1999 to help the club clinch promotion to the Football League. His excellent form saw him make over 300 appearances for the Robins and capture the eye of clubs further up the pyramid, and in the summer of 2004 he joined Burnley. He earned legendary status at Turf Moor,

helping Burnley win promotion to the Premier League on three occasions. He has also represented Northern Ireland, the county of his birth, earning 24 caps. Upon his retirement from playing he was appointed under-18s manager at Burnley and stepped up to become under-23s boss ahead of his appointment at Cheltenham. In his first full season in charge in the 2019/20 campaign he led the club to the League Two play-off semi-finals.

WATCH OUT FOR WILL BOYLE Will Boyle joined the club in January 2017 from Huddersfield Town and is an established member of the squad at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium. In his time with Huddersfield the Garforth born centre back spent time on loan at Kidderminster Harriers, Macclesfield Town and twice at York City. He also had a spell on loan with Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock. He’s one of the longest serving players with the Robins, and despite his defensive duties he weighs in with his fair share of goals from attacking set pieces. The 25-year-old has made 36 appearances in all competitions so far this season netting seven times.

LATEST NEWS

WELCOME

ARTEFACT

A big Boro welcome to our visitors this evening – Cheltenham. I vividly remember being evacuated from their Whaddon Road stadium way back in 1998 due to a bomb scare. We all traipsed across the road to the local park to watch Crescent United playing Hardwicke in the Northern Senior League – all 2,580 of us! Footballing memories are made of such things. Anyway, today I’m hoping Ben Tozer makes the team as his long throwing technique is progressively gaining legendary status.

Imagine a time before text messaging, or emails. Imaging a time when telephones were a novelty, only used for business purposes or owned by those who could afford it. Imagine you were a footballer who only trained with the club once a week. Imagine you played for Stevenage back in 1946. How would you know what the forthcoming match-day arrangements were? Basic stuff I know, but back in the day you would have been sent a postcard, like the one in the accompanying image. This example is actually for the Stevenage Town 2nd XI (or ‘Reserves’ as they would have been known). I confess that I’m not privy to the current arrangements at Stevenage today – but I could hazard a guess.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION Headline news from the FSA this week stems around the controversial Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill – and the implications for football supporters everywhere. You’ll have seen the news about the violent protests in Bristol recently regarding the bill and the implications on the right to protest. Amanda Jacks of the FSA warns football fans to beware. To quote from an article she published just last week: “Well, obviously football fans protest as well, but they congregate in other ways too and unless the Bill is redrafted then we can see how easily the legislation will be used against fans on a match day.”
