ood afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Colchester United. Well, what a game that was on Tuesday night! I’m in the US and the video stream wasn’t available so I had to listen to the live commentary. Someone should have told me I’d need blood pressure tablets! What a game – a typical FA Cup tie full of incidents and all the things we love to see in a football match. If you paid to watch that, then I’m absolutely sure you were entertained. If you stayed to the end, the emotion created in extra time by a last-minute penalty to us was off the charts. Fair play to Luke for stepping up, knowing what was at stake and knowing it was a ‘must score’. Cometh the hour etc. And, what about the goal – how Listy got up twice and played an inch perfect pass to Cokes I’ll never know. The cross in and the header from Jamie were textbook perfect. At the end, with us through, I needed a stiff drink. What a game! Now, we’re back to the real show and this team has now shown what it can do. We need the same sense of urgency, the same application, the same excitement and the same momentum against Colchester as we saw Tuesday.

www.stevenagefc.com

Our opponents today are in a similar position to us. They’re not happy with how their season has gone thus far any more than we are – and there’s a lot at stake. Both teams will want the three points on offer today and I’m looking forward to this game immensely. Robbie and Chris will take the game again today and can hopefully build on our performance in midweek and get the result we all want. My thanks to them for stepping in at such short notice and to Ronnie who is working with the First Team lads during the week. I think everyone can feel the team unite. None of us wanted to lose Revs and Dean but we all feel that we can do better and today is another chance to show that we can. We have funds available to strengthen the squad in January if a new manager feels that is necessary, but we are keen to show our belief and confidence in this group. We will be a few lads short today for various reasons, but that is an opportunity for others to stake a claim on the shirt. The atmosphere sounded magnificent on Tuesday. Let’s create that noise and support for the lads again. Enjoy the game!

MATCHDAY MASCOT

GUESS THE PLAYERS

We welcome Archie Doel as one of our mascots for the clash with Colchester this afternoon. Archie is 6 and a pupil at Oaklands Primary School. He lives in Welwyn and for a young man who lists Ronaldo as his favourite player it’s no wonder football is his sole hobby. We hope he has a great day with us. Jacob Blacker is also a mascot hoping to bring us good luck against Colchester today. A resident of Welwyn, Jacob, 6, is also a pupil at Oaklands Primary School. He lists football, cricket and swimming among his hobbies and his favourite player is Mo Sarah.

The second half was a masterclass from Boro as they pushed for the lead and they finally got their reward through a Ben Kennedy penalty on 82 minutes. It got better just two minutes later as Emmanuel Sonupe made it three and secured the win. DARREN ISTED

BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 20 NOVEMBER Oh, what a rare treat this is; Boro’ to be at home on 20 November is not something we normally see. Of course, recent league results might well contest that use of the word “treat”. But history does show us that Boro’ come into this game against Colchester United with a 100% record at home on this date to defend. Yeah, so we’ve only turned out on home turf once before on this date. And, yeah, it wasn’t exactly the same nature of today’s fixture. But you still have to win ‘em – which is what we did in some style as we put Ware to the sword back in 1989. It was our first league win in nearly a month too. Mind you, we had drawn the previous four. Apart from that date with the Blues, we’ve otherwise been sent on our travels on this date in history. Our results have been a mixed bag too – very much from the sublime to the ridiculous too. One of those fixtures on this date that we’d argue ticks both boxes there is our 3-3 draw at Scarborough in 2004. Boro’ found themselves three goals down very early on at the McCain Stadium. Anthony Elding scored twice either side of a Rob Quinn rocket, however, to earn us a draw. Jo Flack even came so close to clinching it for us in stoppage time. Fast forward 10 years on from that day and Boro’ got a horrible insight into what it feels like to be on the wrong end of an

16

FA Cup upset. After a nervous goalless draw against Maidstone United in the original tie, we had looked to be taking control of the replay after Darius Charles’ equaliser. But a late winner nicked it for the Stones and sent us packing. Hang on? The hosts scoring a late winner against a team from a higher division in an FA Cup Round One replay. That’s sounding awfully familiar… Of course, Martin Gittings scored (twice) on this date in 1993 as we earned a 3-1 win at Hayes. Is there any date in the diary that Gitts didn’t manage to score on? We should probably look into that one… 1982 Long Buckby 2-1 Stevenage Borough, United Counties League Premier Division (Lear) 1989 Stevenage Borough 4-1 Ware, Vauxhall Opel League Division 2 North (P Lindsay, McComb, Williams, Richardson) 1993 Hayes 1-3 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Premier Division (Nugent, M Gittings 2) 2004 Scarborough 3-3 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Elding 2, Quinn) 2010 Accrington Stanley 1-0 Stevenage, npower League Two 2012 AFC Bournemouth 1-1 Stevenage, npower League One (Tansey) 2014 Maidstone United 2-1 Stevenage, FA Cup R1 rep. YOU AGAIN? COLCHESTER UNITED If we’re hoping that we can turn our league form around against the Us this weekend, history is – unfortunately – not on our side. In 17 past meetings with the Essex side, we’ve only managed to accumulate four victories. In comparison, we’ve been on the wrong end of the outcome on nine occasions. And we have no doubt the Us would like to take that into double figures when they drop by the Lamex for this late November encounter. In defence, mitigation, or whatever you want to call it, three of our successes against the Us came in recent(ish) times. A 2-1 victory almost exactly two years ago over at the JobServe Community Stadium sent us through into Round Three of the 2019-20 Leasing.com Trophy. The season before, we made it a league double (3-1 at ours, 2-1 at theirs). And, in doing so, we ended a run of misery against the Us that dated back to our famous 6-1 away win in December 2011. In fact, the Us hit back quite strong after being stung for six in that one match. It started with the return

www.stevenagefc.com

fixture at ours in the 2011-2 season; Boro’ held to a 0-0 draw in the hunt for the playoffs. Then follows a 1-0 defeat (away), 2-0 defeat (home) and 4-0 defeat (away) as the Us decided we’d had our fill of goals against them. Our home meeting in the latter stages of the 2013-4 campaign ended our drought in front of goal. But it all but ended our status as a League One side. After the Us came down themselves in 2016, they continued their dominance; winning 1-2 (here) and 4-0 (there) as it seemed as if that 6-1 win really had made us a genuine enemy. Mind you, things started to pick up after that. We took one point from six in 2017-8, which was as good as we’d managed for a while. And that was then followed by a perfect return in 2018-9. The last two seasons? Well, they’ve been a carbon copy of each other – Leasing.com Trophy aside. A 0-0 draw and a 3-1 defeat at theirs has been the return in both 2019-20 and 2020-1 seasons. What say you, 2021-2?

ACADEMY

G

ood afternoon and welcome to the Lamex for today’s clash with Colchester United. I had the privilege of watching the first team demonstrate a real Stevenage-like performance against MK Dons on Tuesday night in a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup. It was also an opportunity to watch our chief Robbie O’Keefe In action and show everyone the great work that gets done within the academy and the style of play he has been working with us to produce, be replicated at first team level in a short space of time. Robbie was joined by our new professional development phase lead coach Chris Agutter. As previously stated in our pre-match notes before Chris went through an extensive Recruitment process which included Robbie, Alex Tunbridge Leon Hunter and myself before demonstrating his coaching ability in front of players, full-time staff and our Head of Coaching Iuean Lewis. Chris has already settled in really well and we’re all looking forward to working with him when he can finally get his teeth into it. Football is full of highs and lows and Tuesday was definitely a high however unfortunately on Wednesday night we were defeated in the second round

of the FA Youth Cup, where Sutton United defeated us 2-0. Although our performance levels weren’t complete we did have chances to win the game but unfortunately didn’t take them, however these opportunities are vital to a young player developing and learning his trade within the game. The FA Youth Cup is not the be all and end all, there are still plenty of games and opportunities to come. The players have to go again. Our Youth Development Phase Lead Jimmy Martin has also been working with our U18s and his personality and energy has been infectious whilst Ronnie Henry has been with first team in recent week. Jimmy will continue to work along side Chris and Ronnie even more moving forward. So, looking forward to next week we have Harpenden Town in the Herts County Cup on Wednesday evening. To add to that , our Under 15s are playing in the U15 floodlit cup at home to Southend United at Shefford and Compton FC, with a 7pmkick-off. Any support would be appreciated at either game. Enjoy the game and as Ronnie said let’s claw our way back up the table! JORDEN GIBSON Academy Operations Manager

WOMEN

S

tevenage FCW through to the Second Round proper of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup after an epic 3-6 victory over local rivals, Herts Vipers. For only the second time in our history, SFCW reached the second round proper of the FA Cup following an epic first round tie. Last weekend was billed as “Women’s Football Weekend” and our match certainly lived up as a stellar advert to showcase women’s football. Although we played the match at our home ground, the Herts FA, County Ground, we were in unfamiliar territory as the away team in the away changing room as we ground share with Herts Vipers who had been drawn as the home team for this cup tie. First Team Manager, Fadi Mazloum made a couple of changes to his starting lineup with forward, Amy Makewell making her second SFCW debut following her return from injury after re-signing from Enfield Town in the summer and Poppy Bennett making a return to the starting XI after taking some time away from football. The game was a classic cup tie with end-to-end football. Herts Vipers took the lead in the tenth minute following a misplaced clearance, which allowed the Vipers forward to curl in an effort from 20 yards. Not the greatest of starts but the scores were level in the 31st minute. A free-kick on the edge of the D was curled in by Shianne Swarres, who saw her effort parried by the Vipers ‘keeper and Ronni Harrison who was lurking in the box prodded home to even the contest. The second half started in the same way as the first with chances for both sides. Just after the hour mark, it was the Vipers who seized the initiative and took the lead 2-1. A through ball played down the middle pierced the Stevenage back

www.stevenagefc.com

line and the Vipers forward clipped the ball over Oldroyd’s head. Mazloum made several changes and brought on Paige Pryor, who would have a big impact on the game. A perfectly weighted cross from the left by Nicole Emmings found Paige Pryor unmarked in the six yard area as she nodded the ‘Boro level with 75 minutes on the clock. There was another sting in the tail as Vipers thought they’d won the tie deep into injury time as an out swinging corner found the defender who towered above to nod the ball into the net. The drama, however, was not over just yet as with the final kick of the game, a perfectly weighted cross from inside the half by Kate French found Nicole Emmings in the penalty area who stooped low to guide the ball in to the net past ‘keeper to even things up at 3-3. Extra time was needed and Stevenage’s fitness and quality shone through. First, Holly Greenwood got in on the act as she chested the ball down following a clearance and lofted the ball into the net past the ‘keeper from all of 20 yards as the ‘Boro took the lead in the tie for the first time; 3-4! Stevenage hammered home their advantage moments later when Pryor played a perfect reverse ball through to Greenwood who latched on to it and calmly slotted past the ‘keeper; 3-5! The tie was made safe towards the end of the second half of extra time when a long ball was hit down the left channel for Pryor to chase as she knocked it first time past the on-rushing ‘keeper. It ended 3-6 to Stevenage as we booked our place in the second round where we will play Loughborough Lighting at the Hertfordshire FA, County Ground on Sunday 28 November. Tickets available HERE – please come and show your support and be a part of our history! Come on you ‘Boro!!

very November schools throughout the UK take part in Anti-Bullying Week. This is an opportunity to shine a spotlight on bullying and consider the steps we can take together to stop it. This past week the Foundation have been showing their support for Anti-Bullying Week 2021 and its theme ‘One Kind Word’. Kindness can make a world of difference to someone’s day, no matter how small, being kind can change someone’s perspective and provide a moment of hope. As part of the week, Stevenage FC men’s 1st team players have been visiting local schools with Foundation coaches to deliver anti-bullying workshops to local primary school children, discussing bullying and how we can all work together to break down barriers and brighten the lives of the people around us. Captain Scott Cuthbert and Jack Smith visited Giles Junior School on Monday, Ben Coker and Arthur Read visited Woolenwick School on Thursday and

Round Diamond School was visited by Luther Wildin and Elliot Osborne on Friday. The players and Foundation coaches also wore odd socks as a visual show of support for the campaign and to raise awareness in a positive way. Head of Education & School Sport, Daryl Smith said “It has been fantastic to have players out at local schools this past week and working with our coaches to support this really important campaign. After the pandemic, many people have felt isolated and bullying can only add to what has been a really challenging time for everyone. In all aspects of our work, we want those in our community to live active, healthy and positive lives and all have a role to play to create a space where children feel safe and valued and we are united against all forms of bullying. ONE TO WATCH

THE BOSS Hayden Mullins joined the U’s initially as the Assistant Head Coach in September 2020, before taking charge of the first team in March 2021. The former midfielder started his playing career with Crystal Palace, making over 250 appearances for the South London side, before making the switch to the east end with West Ham. Mullins was a key part of the Hammers’ side that gained promotion to the Premier League in 2004/05, going on to make over 200 appearances for the Upton Park side before leaving to join Portsmouth in 2009. He was part of the starting eleven that narrowly lost the 2010 FA Cup Final to Chelsea, staying at Pompey despite relegation the same year. Further spells at Reading, Birmingham City and Notts County followed before he hung up his boots and joined Reading’s academy set up before making the switch to Watford. Mullins was given the Head Coach job permanently following eight games in charge at the end of the 20/21 season, after guiding the U’s to League Two safety.

Freddie Sears re-joined Colchester United after spending six years at Suffolk side Ipswich Town. Freddie left the U’s for Ipswich Town in the winter of 2015 to the then Championship side Ipswich Town, but returned to the JobServe Community Stadium on a two-year deal in the summer of 2021. His career started at West Ham United, where he scored on his debut for the Hammers, coming off the bench to score the winner against Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League in 2008. A series of loan spells followed before Sears found his home at Colchester United after a successful loan spell in the 2011/12 season. Joining permanently in the summer of 2012, Sears was a regular in north Essex, notching up thirty-six goals before making the switch to the Tractor Boys. Just over 200 appearances for Ipswich Town preceded Freddie’s move back to Colchester United where he put pen to paper on a twoyear deal.

DID YOU KNOW?

INTER-CITY BORO

That 100 years ago, the summer of 1921 was exceptionally dry. The old London Road ground of Stevenage Town FC was situated where the current Leisure Centre is today, close to the railway. Sparks from the exhaust of a passing steam locomotive caused a fire, which spread along the perimeter of the ground, destroying the adjacent hedge line. The football club was furious because it allowed spectators to view football from outside the ground without having to pay admission. Claim and counter-claim was submitted to the Great Northern Railway and the local council, but it wasn’t until two years later that a corrugated perimeter fence was installed!

The Boro Bear bus to Rochdale next Tuesday departs The Lamex at 3:00pm. HOWEVER, please note that it will only run if sufficient demand makes it viable.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
