THE CHAIRMAN
PHIL WALLACE
G
ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Colchester United. Our defeat at Exeter on Saturday was disappointing, after the previous 4 league games saw us return 8 points, meeting our 2 points/ game target. We had chances to win the game but the quality of the playing surface was poor and it’s one of those games best forgotten. Our new-found confidence and style of play won’t change and we’re confident that we can soon get close to the top of the 6 game form table and keep returning 2 points/game. Our last meeting against Colchester was a low point for us – we were poor on the day and the score could easily have been much higher. Everything about us is different now and I’m therefore looking to even the score and secure a comfortable win. I have a strong relationship with their owner Robbie Cowling. We have a similar approach to the way we want our clubs to be run, making sure above all else that we survive the financial challenges that we always face, that we develop a youth programme to sustain the Club in future years and that our Club sits at the heart of
www.stevenagefc.com
the community. Obviously we’d both love to see our club challenging for promotion whilst we do all that! As we speak there’s still almost a week left of the transfer window. I’m delighted with the way we improved the squad with Luke, Chris and Matt joining us and we’re not finished yet as we still have a desire to strengthen further this week with 1 or 2 key additions. There are a large number of players available but Revs has created a great team spirit amongst the lads and we must make sure at all costs that we retain that. We want to sign lads that have a strong desire to improve and be the best they can be, winning football matches. Off the pitch, we’re testing twice weekly for Covid and finding pockets here and there. It’s not causing us any major issues due to the strict protocols we have in place whilst the lads are with us. Obviously, once they leave our premises the lads could pick something up, but the regular testing makes a huge difference. Nothing to report around the stadium – we are all focused on winning 2 points/ game from now until the end of April. If you’re watching on iFollow, enjoy the match!

SAY THANK YOU TO OUR NHS HEROES Stevenage Football Club is pleased to announce it’s continuing support for the East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity’s #HereForEachOther appeal which was first launched in March 2020 to support NHS staff and patients in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The NHS Trust which manages the Lister, New QEII, Hertford County Hospital and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre is continuing to work incredibly hard to deliver extraordinary care to local patients under extreme and unprecedented conditions. Stevenage Football Club recognises the NHS’s phenomenal hard work and continual efforts, so is calling on the local community to get behind their fundraising appeal to purchase complimentary snack boxes and hot drinks, to boost staff morale during this difficult time. During the Summer, Stevenage Football

Club delivered over 15,000 sandwiches to staff at the Lister Hospital, but due to current restrictions, visitors are not allowed onto the site. The Trust team will work with the on-site catering team to provide the refreshments, allowing everyone to stay at home, stop the spread of the virus and protect the NHS. A £10 donation could help fund over 3 ‘Smile Packages’ as a way of saying thank you to NHS staff. This small gesture will make a world of difference to the staff and will let them know they are being supported by the local community. There are just over 6000 staff members within our local NHS Trust so we would love to raise in the region of £12,000 so we can send a thank you to all of our Heroes. To donate visit www.enhhcharity. org.uk/hereforeachother or text HERE4EACHOTHER to 70085 to donate £5.

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 26 JANUARY The unique pressure being put on the League Two schedule this season means we face quite a few midweek meetings over the coming weeks and months. It’s one reason why we have the rare honour of turning out on 26 January for just the fourth time in our history. And each of the past three instances had been well spaced-out… until now. That’s because we only need to go back two years for the last time it happened. Forest Green Rovers were our visitors at the Lamex for a League Two match that won’t live long in the memory. A poor performance saw us record a second straight home defeat against the Rovers since their promotion from the Conference. It was a defeat that allowed them to strengthen their playoff push, while denting ours and leaving us three points adrift of the top seven.
us on the path to silverware, however. We were easily beaten by Hertford Town two months later in the semi-final. 1982 Letchworth Garden City 1-3 Stevenage Borough, East Anglian Cup Quarter-Final 1991 Stevenage Borough 3-2 Rainham Town, Vauxhall Football League Division Two North 2019 Stevenage 0-2 Forest Green Rovers, Sky Bet League Two
But that gloom is in sharp contrast to the sheer joy we were experiencing on 26 January 1991. Colin Cardines bagged a brace as Boro’ won 3-2 against Rainham Town in Vauxhall Football League Division Two North. What makes it so much more remarkable is that it was our 16th straight win in all competitions and our 15th straight league win. How we’d love to embark on a similar run right about now… Our third and final (or should that be first and, er, first) match played on this date in history took place in 1982. Boro’ made the short bus ride up the A1(M) to Letchworth Garden City for our East Anglian Cup Quarter-Final. Jim Daintree, Danny Dance and Trevor Metcalfe all found the target as we came out on top by three goals to one. It didn’t quite set
16
YOU AGAIN?: COLCHESTER UNITED It all started so well for us against Colchester United. We’ll fondly remember our 6-1 win at the JobServe Community Stadium on Boxing Day 2011 for many years still to come. But perhaps we got

a little ahead of ourselves with the Us? The Essex club certainly hit back from that humiliation. In 16 encounters to date, that memorable mauling is just one of four wins to our name. The Us, meanwhile, have won nine in comparison – which then leaves three draws. Out of those four wins we’ve managed against them, three – oddly, maybe – have come at their place. Of course, the caveat is that one is last season’s leasing.com Trophy Round Two clash. How much this counts in the grand
www.stevenagefc.com
scheme of things is yours to decide. Either way, it can’t hide the fact that the Lamex hasn’t proven to be a happy hunting ground against the Us; one win in seven previous dates at home is hardly fortress material. That solitary home win came in October 2018; Boro’ conceding in the second minute but coming back to win 3-1 with two goals in the last eight minutes - Ben Kennedy from the penalty spot and Emmanuel Sonupe two minutes later. Our first and last home fixtures against the Us have been goalless draws. And both, you could say, represent our club at two very different stages of a journey. In March 2012, we were en route to the League One playoffs when we were only able to settle for a point after Jordan Slew saw red. More recently, it’s just over a year since we met here. Unlike 2012, we were floundering at the foot of League Two. But there was one similarity; Tom Soares was sent off for us. The moral of the story? More goals please Boro’, and hold the red cards. It doesn’t help the cause.

POSITION: Left Back or Left Wing
WHAT CLUBS HAVE YOU PREVIOUSLY PLAYED FOR? I’ve previously played for Bedwell Rangers, Hitchin Belles (youth teams) and Luton Town Ladies before joining Stevenage FCW.
WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL? I am still in full time education, studying sports coaching and development level 3.
HOW DO YOU FIND JUGGLING FOOTBALL, TRAINING AND YOUR DAY JOB? Fitting in football around my full time education can sometimes be challenging because I play for my College teams as well as having to manage my time for my coursework.
CAN YOU TELL US WHO YOUR FOOTBALLING IDOL OR ROLE MODEL WAS WHILST GROWING UP AND WHY? My football role models when growing up were Alex Scott, Steph Houghton and Leah Williamson. They are good footballers and encourage you to be the best you can be and get you to believe in yourself – you should never give up!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE FEMALE FOOTBALLER AND WHY? Leah Williamson – she has worked hard through the ranks of Arsenal and is always working hard and doing things to help others.

HOW HAVE YOU BEEN KEEPING FIT AND ACTIVE DURING LOCKDOWN? I have been doing HIIT sessions and running to keep my fitness up because I need to be ready for when the season re-starts.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR MATCHES AND WHAT DOES YOUR PRE-MATCH ROUTINE LOOK LIKE? I like to have porridge for breakfast on a match day, then I like to make sure that I have everything I need for the game and I have the correct kit and boots. Travelling to games I like to listen to music that makes happy so I get ready for the game and prepare in a way that suits me. When getting ready for the game I don’t have any specific routine.
AS WE’RE CURRENTLY IN LOCKDOWN, WHAT TV SERIES ARE YOU CURRENTLY, OR HAVE BEEN, BINGE WATCHING? WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHT OR ACHIEVEMENT THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? My football achievement is attending trials for Arsenal and MK Dons when I was just 14 years old. Because of when my birthday fell, I was the youngest in the age group.
IT HAS BEEN A STOP START SEASON SO FAR AND AFTER LAST SEASON BEING DECLARED NULL AND VOID. HOW DO YOU FEEL THE SEASON HAS GONE FOR YOU PERSONALLY? This season has been so tough because it has been so stop start. Not consistently having games week in week out like we are used to and then having to stop the season and starting up again has been difficult. It is just about keeping your fitness up and being prepared for when the season starts again.

I have been watching Married At First Sight Australia but apart from that I don’t really watch TV because I am keeping fit and making sure college work is up to date.

WELCOME CLUB MATTERS Top level football in Colchester can be traced back to the original side Colchester FC which was founded in 1873. The renaming to Colchester Town in 1899 led to the move to Layer Road and the first links with the current club. Town lived a life in non-league but struggled to attract success and crowds and in 1937 it was decided that a new cub
Colchester United would be formed, playing their home games at Layer Road. United were much more hungry for success and after a good amateur grounding they were elected to the Football League Division Three South in 1950. The Us spent their time in the bottom two tiers of the league set-up, their big dalliance with the headlines coming in 1971 when they beat the mighty Leeds in the fifth round of the FA Cup. A poor run of form in the 1980s culminated with their relegation to the Conference in 1990 although they only spent two seasons at this level before returning. Once again the Us stayed around the bottom two tiers

although the stars aligned for 2006-07, a campaign which saw Colchester United record their highest ever finish of 10th in the Championship, in the process finishing above all of their local rivals (Norwich, Ipswich and Southend). This season truly has been a tale of two halves, the Us starting off well and always in the play-off hunt. But since winning 1-0 at Scunthorpe on December 8, Colchester have gone seven without victory, including four defeats and three draws in that run as they come to The Lamex.
THE BOSS Steve Ball was appointed first team coach in charge of the senior side in July 2020. Colchester born Ball has been a player and a coach at the club, and took over the head coach role after being an assistant coach for four years under John McGreal. He played for Arsenal and Norwich and had two spells at Colchester United as a player before moving into coaching and management. After managing at non-league level, he moved into the Colchester United Academy
and progressed quickly up the age groups. He was the Assistant to McGreal in the U23s before the pair were promoted into the first team set-up in 2016. Alongside McGreal, Ball helped guide the U’s to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup in 2019/20, as well as the play-off semifinals in the same season.
WATCH OUT FOR
Ben Stevenson - The U’s signed former loanee Ben Stevenson on a two and a half year deal in the January 2019 transfer window. His initial spell began almost exactly a year before that, having signed on loan at the end of January 2018 and making his U’s debut on February 3rd. He went on to make thirteen appearances in the remainder of the season, scoring twice, before returning to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

COMMERCIAL As with every Club in the land, we’ve been starved of a vital income stream, after all, who wants to sponsor a match they can’t attend, hire an executive box they can’t access or sponsor a match ball that nobody will see? But we are ready for business. As soon as we’re allowed to reopen we will be there for you. Hopefully this current set of restrictions will have the desired effect and infection numbers will fall significantly
enough for us to be allowed to restart, most likely with a limited service similar to what was offered for the recent game against Grimsby Town with around 100 people being admitted to the North Stand, before a more general opening of the stadium as time goes on. SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS
COLCHESTER Welcome to the players and officials of Colchester United this evening. Sadly, my counterpart from Colchester United Supporters Association (CUSA), Jon Burns is unlikely to be here tonight. However, I would convey my regards to the committee members of CUSA, in anticipation of “re-engaging” once the pandemic is over.
THE FSA AND NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL Against a backdrop of the national lockdown, the Trident Leagues at Steps 3 and 4 (Northern Premier, Southern and Isthmian) have indicated a preference to cancel all remaining league fixtures. At the time of writing, they were surveying their member clubs for their views on whether to continue with the 2020/21 season. The clubs, which have already been navigating a precarious path this season, face an even more uncertain future and have advised that they will require a support package to get them through the spring and summer without fixtures. A dozen National League North clubs have already written to Secretary of State Oliver Dowden, the Department of Culture, Media & Sport and The FA asking for reassurance that the promise of financial support that was made when restarting the season behind closed doors is delivered. The FSA is currently urging supporters, and clubs themselves, to
www.stevenagefc.com
write to their local MPs to highlight their plight and to encourage government to recognise the important role that football clubs play in communities across England and Wales to secure support over the coming months. An FA survey in July 2019 established that grassroots football is worth in excess of £10bn per year to the UK economy. Almost 1600 non-league clubs compete in more than 100 leagues.
STEVENAGE FOOTBALL ARTIFACTS Tradition dictates that when clubs play each other for the first time - particularly clubs from overseas - then a memento is exchanged. On Monday 29th March 1982, Stevenage Borough played host to SK Vard Haugesund from Norway, who were touring England in a series of friendly matches. Picture the scene, if you will, when the Stevenage captain ran up to the centre-spot with a club pennant in his hand to exchange keepsakes with his opposite number from Vard. Pennant in left hand, right hand extended, the surprised skipper was to receive an effigy of something he wasn’t quite sure about. Unconventional perhaps, but certainly amusing, the Troll now resides on the mantelpiece at the home of Jackie and Keith Berners. Memories are made of such things. LLOYD BRISCOE SA Chairman
