THE MANAGER STEVE EVANS
Firstly, I would like to welcome everyone from Crawley Town to tonight’s Sky Bet League Two game at The Lamex Stadium. Looking back on Tuesday and Leyton Orient in front of the Sky cameras, I thought it was an equal game. It was a game of limited chances, but I thought we had the two best of the match. They are a team with big resources and like to play possessionbased football under Richie (Wellens). We’re probably one of the few teams who they have come up against, played two strikers with three at the back and had a go! Usually, teams sit off Leyton Orient and wait to concede – we’ll never do that under myself.
I would also like to place on record a great thank you to the 1,044 travelling supporters we took to East London on Tuesday. Your support gives us that extra boost on the pitch and coming away
from home with you behind us is a special feeling.
Now we look forward to a couple of games at home with an opportunity to build on that performance. It seems like about six years since we’ve been at home! We know it’s only been a few weeks, but it has seemed a long time because we’ve had players in and out, missing through injury and illness. We have got two tough games in front of us in Crawley Town and Gillingham. Both will be different; both will cause different problems to us. When we come through those two games, we will then be able to look forward to hopefully what becomes a magical day at Villa Park playing against an elite team.
We have the home advantage tonight; we need our supporters to be loud and we’ll need to be at our best to earn the result we want.
Stevenage have won 3 of their last 5 league games against Crawley (D2) and could do the league double over them for the second time, previously doing so in 2018-19.
Crawley haven’t won on any of their last six league visits to Stevenage since a 1-0 victory in February 2016 under Mark Yates (D3 L3).

MATCHDAY MASCOTS
A warm welcome this evening goes to our three mascots hoping to help Boro end a remarkable year on a real high with yet another win. Firstly we welcome Riley Cuthbert to The Lamex. Riley will be celebrating his 12th birthday tomorrow (31st) so if Boro win tonight he should be allowed to stay up to see the big day in!
A pupil at Marriotts School, Riley lives in Stevenage and lists football and gaming as his hobbies. His favourite player is Taye Ashby-Hammond.
A big Boro brotherly welcome also goes to Elliott and Oscar Battell who are are bringing the best of luck this evening. Elliott, 10, and Oscar 8 both live in Benington and attend Benington School. Elliott cites playing football and playing FIFA as his hobbies and Jake Reeves and Elliott List are his favourite players. Oscar also has football and FIFA for his hobbies and his favourite player is Dan Sweeney. We hope all three mascots have an amazing evening with us and that they all go away happy to have helped steer Boro to another win.

Stevenage didn’t start this clash at home to Crawley ideally as captain and striker Alex Revell was forced off after just 11 minutes due to an injury. However, Revell’s replacement, James Ball, thrived in his unexpected early substitution as he nodded a James-Wildin cross goalwards, a header which Crawley ‘keeper, Glenn James failed to deal with as the ball squirmed through his grasp to give Stevenage the lead twenty-four minutes in. Crawley striker Dominic Poleon seemed to have a golden opportunity to level the score minutes later but he started to slip and agonisingly couldn’t make a strong connection with the ball to turn it in.
Poleon was desperate to make up for his missed first chance though and swivelled around Scott Cuthbert and then drilled the ball low into the back of the Stevenage net. The visitors were the side who were becoming more and more threatening as goalkeeper Paul Farman got down quickly to guide a shot from Crawley striker, Ollie Palmer, away from danger.
On 40 minutes Danny Newton drove at the Crawley defence and fired a shot goalwards which was parried as far as Ball, who was on hand to tap home to put Boro ahead again. Crawley continued to probe in the second half as they hit the bar, and had a shot cleared off the line but the score remained unchanged and Stevenage’s defensive efforts had been enough to keep them ahead.

ON THIS DAY: 30 JANUARY
It’s a time of year when football seems to be in abundance. But you actually need to look quite hard for past occasions where Boro’ have played on 30 December. It’s perhaps no surprise; today falls between the traditional Boxing Day and New Year outings and it’s a squeeze to fit in an additional fixture. Not that it doesn’t happen, mind you. After all, here we are today. So, it’s rare for Boro’ to have a date in the diary for 30 December. It’s even rarer for us to be at home on this date. Our three past fixtures on this day in the calendar were ALL away from home. And the fortunes? Hmm – not the greatest. One win and two defeats is our return on this date; the last of which being a 1-0 reverse on the road in 2017. And who pocketed the points that day? Well, wouldn’t you know it; today’s guests Crawley Town did a festive number on us – in spite of the fact they played more than half of the game with 10 men. Jon Nurse was the man on target in our only victory on this date; a 1-0 win at Weymouth under Mark Stimson in 2006. We never do get the seaside away days in the height of summer, do we? And completing the trio of past 30 December treats is a 2-1 defeat at Harlow Town in the Knights Floodlit League back in 1989.
IT’S CRAWLEY TOWN AGAIN…
In what’ll be meeting number 35 between ourselves and Crawley Town, it’s fair to
HISTORY
1989 Harlow Town 2-1 Stevenage Borough, Knights Floodlit League (McComb)
2006 Weymouth 0-1 Stevenage Borough, Conference National (Nurse)
2017 Crawley Town 1-0 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two
say we’ve now quite familiar with a fellow New Town club. In fact, we’ve only played three other teams on more occasions than our guests today. Woking and Morecambe are both in the 40s, while Forest Green Rovers are well within the Red Devils’ sights now on 37. Boro’ can reflect on a healthy 50% win rate over the years; 17 wins from 34 encounters and seven draws on top. You’ll have to go back six fixtures to the dire days of February 2020 for the last time we were on the wrong end of the result. Since, we’ve won three and drawn two – and we’d certainly welcome the chance to extend that unbeaten run.
MAGIC MOMENT:
01 May 2021 – Sky Bet League Two
So, despite the current balance of power playing into our hands, why have we
picked a draw of all results as our magic moment this time around? Well, it’s not every day you play out a 3-3 draw. It usually means there’s been a decent slice of entertainment on show too. And, to be honest, our home win against the Red Devils are usually quite functional. It was a game in which Boro’ could never quite get away from our guests. Luke Norris put us ahead on 21 minutes from the penalty spot, before our guests drew level three minutes later. Norris doubled
his and our tally on 74 minutes, only for TVC to put through his own net five minutes later.
And just when we thought Arthur Read’s 81st minute effort had won it, up popped Josh Payne in stoppage time with a leveller. Funnily enough, it was Payne who saw red when Boro’ lost at Crawley Town on this day in 2017.
By Pete Hayman courtesy of boroguide.co.ukON BOTH SIDES…
The list of players to appear in both the red and white of Boro’ and the red and white of Crawley Town is a chunky one. And maybe that’s to be expected as two clubs who have operated at much the same level for a generation now. In the current ranks, there’s Jordan Roberts on our side of the fence and Aramide Oteh on theirs. Dannie Bulman could have been another ex-Boro’ lad on show today – but he retired earlier this year at the tender age of 43. Who of those other names stand out from the list? In no particular order: Jimmy Smith, Ashley Bayes, Jefferson
ACADEMY
Good evening and welcome to Friday night under the lights. Best of luck to the gaffer and his troops as they continue to produce entertaining football for us all.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our U11 sponsors Griggs homes who are in attendance tonight with our U11s squad. The continued support is appreciated and we are thankful for the generosity they provide which enables us to re invest into our academy.
We have very little update since our last game due to the Christmas break. However, I would like to thank everyone who has supported our young players over the last year. It’s a year that has seen dramatic changes for the better, new enthused staff, facility investment and new era for our club, long may it continue. Our parents have been fantastic through out and have supported our players country wide. So a big thank you from all of us at the academy.
Finally, as we go into the new year, I would like to wish everyone a happy new year and hope the new year brings joy and happiness to us all.

WOMEN
Afine display from Amy Makewell capped a superb performance from Stevenage FCW as they swept fellow promotion chasers Needham Market aside in an action packed second half. Further goals from Shianne Swarres, Jodie Bellinger and a brace off the bench from Emily Schofield completed the eventual rout for Boro. The entertainment started early, literally, with the weather causing referee Neil Draper to bring kick off forward by 15 minutes. It took 5 minutes for Makewell to continue her run of games with a goal involvement as she laid a gorgeous through ball for Bellinger to give Stevenage an early lead. Boro nearly doubled the advantage when Lucy Webster was fouled 25 yards from goal. Hannah Nebbitt’s left footed free kick beat Gibbs, but crashed off the crossbar and over. An equally good save was required down the other end. Moments later, Bellinger saw her pass deflected into the path of Makewell who broke into the box and left Gibbs with no chance. However, as the half progressed, Needham grew into the game and were buoyed by an excellent strike from outside of the box by Eva Hubbard.
It was the second half that saw Stevenage impose themselves. They came out strongly and when Webster took a short free kick by the halfway line, Anna Re and Kelsey Millen linked up before sending the
ball back to Webster on the edge of the box for her to cross low into the path of Schofield who turned home. Next, Swarres tested Gibbs, foreshadowing later events, with a lofted shot that was too hot for Gibbs to handle. She parried the ball downwards and into the path of Schofield who had gambled in the box and smashed the ball low for Borough’s fourth and her second. Five minutes later, Swarres struck. Millen worked hard down the right to feed Makewell, who with her back to goal laid off an inviting ball for Swarres. The Zimbabwean took her time and unleashed another lofted shot which dipped under the bar.
Needham were on the back foot again and when the ball came into the box it bounced up and caught a defender on the arm. The referee gave the penalty, which Makewell netted.
Next came a crazy three minutes. Amy Gooderham, back from injury, settled into the game well and her ball in from the right was perfect for Makewell to complete her hat-trick. The ball immediately went down the other end where Molly Hall headed home at the far post for a consolation goal before Gooderham and Makewell repeated the trick from two minutes earlier, with Makewell scooping the ball into the net for her fourth goal. It was a pulsating affair and a statement win for Borough who maintain their charge on promotion.

Wagmi (We’re All Going To Make It) which specialises in the cryptocurrency world, the pledge to take this side to the top flight has been dented by managerial changes - the first made from the start when Kevin Betsy took over from John Yems.
A stunning 2-0 win over Fulham in the EFL Cup masked a poor league start with just one win and six defeats in the first 10 games - included in this was a 2-1 home reverse to Boro.
Since then league success has been hard to come by and they have slipped out of the EFL Cup to Burnley and lost to Acrrington in the FA Cup.
FORM GUIDE
Crawley come to Boro perilously close to the drop zone and at the half way point of a season which has clearly failed to live up to expectations.
Taken over pre-season by US consortium
Matthew Etherington was named new boss at the end of November and recent form slightly improved although the boss was gone this week with the Red Devils having lost to Hartlepool and drawn with Gillingham, taking just four points from 12 from a run of four home games.
LAST 5 SEASONS
MEET THE BOSS:
Yesterday (Thursday), Crawley Town issued a statement to say that Matthew Etherington and assistant Simon Davies had left their roles with the club.
At the time of publishing this digital interactive programme there had been no further announcement on a full time or caretaker manager. Former Spurs and West Ham player Etherington took on the manager role on November 27. Below is the published statement in full. Crawley Town Football can confirm that FirstTeam Manager Matthew Etherington and Assistant Manager Simon Davies have left their roles at Crawley Town Football Club with immediate effect. Director of Football and interim CEO Chris Galley said: “It has become clear to all involved parties that this partnership is not the right fit to carry the club forward and achieve our goals. As a result, we have mutually decided to move in a different direction. We wish Matty and Simon well in their future endeavours.”
The club will appoint a new permanent manager as soon as possible.
ONE TO WATCH:
Jake Hessenthaler, son for former player Andy, is currently in his third season with the Red Devils and has played more than 100 times for the club. The midfielder began his career in the Chelsea youth set up but moved on to Gillingham where he began his career with a five season spell in League One, racking up almost 200 appearances.
The 28-year-old also enjoyed a spell on loan at Tamworth and played for Grimsby where he secured the promotion from the National League.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION LATEST NEWS
WELCOME
Crawley are back, and it’s the next round of the “Battle of the New Towns” here at The Lamex.
Crawley and Stevenage have so much in common – our veritable “twin club”. For example, did you know that both clubs joined the Southern League together in 1963.
Stevenage achieved Football League status in 2010, and Crawley did too in 2011. In 2011, we achieved back-to-back promotions to L1 - Crawley did the same in 2012.
In 2014, we dropped back down into L2Crawley followed us in 2015.
The Crawley Town Supporters Alliance (CTSA) are a fans group of the Red Devils chaired by Reuben Watt. Other board members likely to be here this afternoon include treasurer Simon Smith, and fans delegate Steve Leake. Have a great time all, and a happy new year to you.
CHAIRMAN’S NEW YEAR ADDRESS
First, I should like to start by hoping that you all had a great Christmas, and that Santa brought you what you wanted. I think and hope that you’ll agree with me when I say that this has (thus far) been our best season in many a year.
To be out of the doldrums and flying high in League 2, and luxuriating in the knowledge of meeting Aston Villa in the 3rd round of the FA Cup, then the future bodes well.
The Supporters’ Association is also gradually emerging from the “Covid” period which did much to decimate our membership numbers for at least a couple of seasons.
As long as I have been the chair of the SA (18 years), then membership has stubbornly adhered to about 1 in 4 of our average home gate attendance. Of late, I have witnessed many more ‘old’ Boro fans returning to the fold. This may be attributed to the cessation of Premier League football whilst the World
Cup was on. It may be as a consequence of the increase in the cost of living which makes watching Premier League football in London too cost prohibitive for most Stevenage residents. It’s likely though, that people will come to watch a successful winning team which happens to play some really good football too. The people want to be entertained – and that’s what were getting here at The Lamex. The SA would hope to capitalise by increasing our membership. However, this places an extra burden on those on the committee who do so much work without want or favour. One particular candidate that springs to mind is Andrew Mugridge. Andrew only joined the SA committee a couple of years ago, but his influence has been phenomenal. Andrew has taken on the role of General Secretary, Membership Sec., Comms Sec., Chief Administrator, Website Supremo, main club-SA conduit (behind the scenes) and, likely candidate to assume John Carroll’s role as away bus co-ordinator – (if John does eventually ‘retire’).
Frankly, we need more helping hands on the committee to reduce the workload that Andrew does on our behalf. Andrew has been my Boro Fan of the Year, and I thank him for his unswerving service to-date.
I will conclude my end-of-year address by wishing you all a happy and prosperous New Year, and with a simple request to Steve Evans – more of the same please!
