irst up, I would like to give a HUGE shout-out to all the supporters who travelled to Colchester on Tuesday night – you were AWESOME! You gave us fantastic support that made all the difference when we had to dig deep to chalk up another win to get ourselves just three wins from Wembley. Thank you. I love that passion. I love how much it matters to all of us. It is a daily inspiration to feel that passion from everyone connected to our fantastic club. We as a team feel that and recognise that we have a responsibility to give our absolute all. Thank you so much for inspiring us. Tuesday was our second trip to Colchester United this season. The first seems a million years ago for many reasons and I am proud of the reaction from this group since that day. From the 11 games since then, we have chalked up two defeats, four draws, four wins and we are unbeaten at home. If that was a league run, that would be 19 points from 33 – and that’s promotion form. That’s not enough for this group though. They want more and they really have the bit between their teeth to go and chase the next game; to demand more from themselves and their teammates. Bragbury End has a real buzz; an intensity. A fire has been lit. This Stevenage never stops. This Stevenage never quits. This Stevenage gives everything at all times. Whatever happens this Stevenage leaves it all on the pitch, with no regrets. That’s who we are and we go again today. I also want to bring to your attention today that we are showing our support for all LGBT people in football and beyond as part of the Stonewall Rainbow Laces campaign.

FOR INFO ON HOW TO SPONSOR THIS PAGE

I was shocked to read this week the sad fact that four in 10 LGBT people don’t think sport is welcoming. Football has an incredible power to bring people together and create a sense of belonging. That’s why we all need to play our part to make football everyone’s game. When we step up and play our part, others will follow. We as a football club are proud to support Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces 2019-20 to show our support for all LGBT people in football and beyond. So please play your part and have a look at www.stonewall.org.uk for more on this fantastic programme. Finally, I introduced my three-yearold daughter to one of my favourite childhood books this week; Peter Pan. I think I enjoyed it far more than her – but it reminded me of a quote I remember vividly from my own childhood: “The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever to be able to do it.” So let’s believe in what is possible; let’s see the best in this team and show them we believe in them. With that collective belief, anything is possible. Let’s be Bold. Let’s be Brave. Let’s Believe! www.stevenagefc.com | 5

ood afternoon and welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Crawley Town. How nice to be back in the UK, despite the weather. After seven weeks in the US it’s great to be home to enjoy a live game at The Lamex. It’s been a long time since I penned any programme notes, which shows how long it’s been since we had a home league game. I don’t need to tell anyone how important this game is for us. Somehow, despite decent performances in the last six games, we’ve become adrift at the bottom of the table and that has to be put right – hopefully starting today. Our win at Colchester on Tuesday has put us into the last 16 of the competition and even the draw away to League One Bristol Rovers hasn’t dampened our enthusiasm to do well in the competition. But we have the small matter of winning games in December first. Our injury list in October and November was ridiculous and, since the start of the season, it has been off the charts. In the FA Cup draw with Peterborough we lost three senior players in one game alone. But that luck had to change and we’ll have more players back today with only Danny Newton and Joel being long-term injuries. Having a different training regime and a settled medical and sports science team has also made a huge difference. We need a long winning run now to climb the table - and I hope we can start that today. The club is developing well in all areas. The only issue we’ve had is getting the new North Stand signed off for normal use. We seem to have gone backwards and Stevenage FC v Crawley Town FC

forwards with the various authorities, but we will keep keep giving the relevant people what they want and eventually they’ll run out of issues to debate. Some points are relevant but then some are baffling. No matter, we’ll be able to use the stand for the first time today and we’ll keep investing until we get full clearance. All the external works are done – as are all the facilities inside the concourse (upper level). The new bar/conferencing room (lower level) is coming along nicely and I expect the floor coverings to be go down around Christmas, with furniture and bar fittings during January. Its been a mammoth journey and it’s cost a lot more than we budgeted for, but the end result will be there for generations to enjoy - and worth every penny. The lads really need to hear you today. This is one of those times when #wearestevenage really means something. We must stay together, united in our support of the boys who are giving everything for us. Enjoy the game. www.stevenagefc.com | 7

n this day a full 15 years ago Boro suffered the ultimate ignominy of a home defeat against the old enemy Woking. In front of a crowd of 1,816, Boro were looking to keep their steady campaign going under boss Graham Westley, and they wanted to get back on track after sliding out of the FA Cup a week earlier, losing 2-0 at home to Rochdale. Alas despite a team which included Jason Goodliffe, George Boyd and Anthony Elding, Boro missed the chance to put pressure on those above them. Information kindly supplied by www.boroguide.co.uk

ACADEMY

T

he last few weeks have been very exciting for the Academy with our U18 squad producing some excellent performances in the FA Youth Cup and the League. However, it’s always important to stay level and not get too excited or too down. I do have to say, though, that in the last round of the FA Youth Cup against a very strong Peterborough side, the performance left me feeling very proud. That comes from seeing a group of young players who have been within the set-up, in some cases for nine years, put in a performance that showcased our Academy brilliantly. We were very young going into that game, naming no less than nine U16 players in the squad, three of them starting the game. At the end of extra-time six players had played their part in a fantastic performance. Much credit should go to the current crop of scholars, who were excellent Stevenage FC v Crawley Town FC

on the night and led by example. It does feel that all the hard work of the previous seasons has started to bear fruit. To achieve success lots of things need to come together, not least opportunity, and this is where we have young players doing well and earning the right to play, taking their chances to showcase themselves. Young players always look at the first team – and need to see a development pathway. On Tuesday the scholars take on Aston Villa at The Lamex, with the winners travelling to either Manchester City or Swansea in the next round. It would be great to see as many of you here as possible to support them on what is always a great night for the boys and indeed for the club, further raising its profile – and inspiring future Academy recruits Enjoy the game !

FOUNDATION WELCOME TO THE FOUNDATION PAGE. Over the next few issues, we’re going to give you an insight into some of the Community work we do. My name is Hannah Marsh, and I am the Healthy Lifestyles Manager, overseeing all things Health and Wellbeing. The first thing you might be thinking is: “What has that got to with football?” It is a question I get asked a lot. Here at the Foundation we are not just about football – our aim is to help create active and healthier lifestyles for all and positively impact all areas of our community.

The variety of programmes that I coordinate and deliver certainly contribute to this and have far-reaching effects. I have spent the past seven years working as a personal trainer and nutritional advisor, specialising in rehabilitation and recovery for those who may suffer with illness or injuries. This is a skillset that I have brought to the Foundation since October 2018 and Stevenage FC v Crawley Town FC

First Team player Luther James-Wildin joins in with the Intro to Exercise Class

I am incredibly fortunate to be able to directly impact people’s lives on a daily basis and help to improve their health through the programmes I run. Introduction to Exercise classes take place twice a week in local community centres and are aimed at people who need a bit of help getting into exercise and who may suffer with long-term medical conditions. The sessions are a mix of circuits, Boxercise, Soccercise – even Pilates. They are adaptable to each person’s ability. They are great fun and have a strong social element to them with a lovely bunch of people from all walks of life attending on a weekly basis.

their habits, taught them new things and most importantly, the kids have loved it! Strength and Balance classes for older adults are the most recent area we have ventured into, delivering weekly, hour long classes in all 10 Districts of Hertfordshire. They are designed for individuals wanting to improve their strength and balance all while maintaining their independence and are suitable for people who haven’t exercised before or who are experiencing a decline in their physical ability.

The Community Kitchen programme is another key project that runs several times a year and is a free, eight-week course that puts the fun back into mealtimes by teaching families how to cook healthy, simple meals on a budget. Families get to go through every aspect of planning, preparing and cooking great meals with additional support being given around managing food budgets, hygiene, and leading healthy and active lifestyles. The previous courses have been incredibly successful with families giving feedback that the course has changed

But we also signed some great new players during pre-season.” Manager Mark Dicker said: “The beginning of the season was very tough; we struggled to get any momentum going due to new signings finding their feet and with picking up a number of injuries. “We have three games left this year, two of them being in cup competitions, which we also very much want to do well in.”

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS WELCOME How I love it when Crawley comes to town. If there’s any club in the league where I would benchmark Stevenage’s fortunes, then it would be Crawley. For a start, we’re both “New Towns”, Stevenage was the very first and Crawley was the second. Both clubs joined the Southern League together in 1963. Stevenage achieved Football League status in 2010, and Crawley did too in 2011. In 2011, we achieved back-to-back promotions to L1 - Crawley did it in 2012. In 2014, we dropped back down into L2 - Crawley followed us in 2015. I could go on (and on) - but I won’t. Suffice to say it’s great to have Crawley here this afternoon, and a special shout-out to my old mate Mark “Oggy” Ogbourne, who was chair of Crawley’s supporters and, like me, represent our respective clubs at national level on the Football Supporters Association.

you support and loyalty to the club at this festive time. You can apply on-line at www.sfcsa. co.uk/home/membership or visit one of our manned locations in the ground on match-days. Give it a thought.

BORO BUS Boro’s next away foray is on Saturday December 14th, when our travels take us across the friendly border to Wales. Rodney Parade in Newport is our destination and the buses depart The Lamex at 10:00am sharp. Adult fare is just £25 (£30 for non-members) and concession is £15 (£20 for nonmember). Get thee there with Boro the Bear. Ho ho ho.

Lloyd Briscoe Chairman of Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association

MEMBERSHIP With Christmas just around the corner, have you considered an SA membership as a stocking filler for a friend or loved one? It’s only £5 for an Under 16 to join, and the benefits are remarkably good value. Here’s an example of what’s included: • Free match-day ticket draw • Special ID card • Sparkly, shiny lapel badge • Discount at the club shop • Birthday card • Loyal supporter’s award And many other goodly things too. With U18 membership at just £10, adult at £15 and a whole family at £30, it could be just the thing to demonstrate Stevenage FC v Crawley Town FC

WELCOME

They gained back-to-back promotions to League One after finishing third in their first season in League Two. They were relegated in 2014-15 and haven’t been able to hit the same heights since.

LATEST FORM…

THE BASICS… The Reds are now in their ninth season in the Football League after gaining promotion from the Conference National for the first time in 2010-11 – the same year they lost only 1-0 at Manchestr United in the FA Cup fifth round.

34 | www.stevenagefc.com

Since starting the season with just two defeats in eleven 11, Crawley have only gone on to win one game and no victory since the October 12 when they beat Colchester United at The People’s Pension Stadium. They also haven’t won away since beating Leyton Orient 3-2 in August and are now 17th – seven points from the drop zone. In recent games, the Reds have shipped late goals, missing what could have been four crucial points in their last two home games. Morecambe’s Cole Stockton was on hand to grab a point in the 81st minute for the Shrimpers, while Exeter’s Dean Moxey scoring a 77th minute winner on November 23.

Stevenage FC v Crawley Town FC

BERYLY LUBALA

STAR MAN… Beryly (Bez) Lubala was signed in June and has scored nine goals in all competitions in what is his first full season as a professional. The 21-year-old was a scholar at Birmingham City in 2014 and made his debut two years later as a substitute at Bristol City. Three years, four games and no goals later, Lubala rejected a contract extension in search of first-team football. He had been a regular member of the Blues’ firstteam squad last season. The DR Congo-born player was Crawley’s fourth signing of the summer.

THE GAFFER…

JOHN YEMS

Crawley Town this week unveiled John Yems as head coach, initially until the end of the season after Gabriele Cioffi was dismissed on December 2 after 14 months in charge. Dannie Bulman, who played 83 times for Stevenage in four years here, is part of the new management team, but will continue as a player. Edu Rubio, Cioffi’s assistant, will remain on the coaching staff. It is Yems’ second spell as reds’ boss. With Ben Judge and Dave Woozley, he led them to Conference safety in 200607 after a campaign with a 10-point deduction. He was also assistant to Exeter manager Paul Tisdale for 18 months and then spent six years with AFC Bournemouth as Football Operations Manager, handling player recruitment for Eddie Howe. by Taylor Catton Stevenage FC v Crawley Town FC
