e were bitterly disappointed with a draw against a team in the top four. It is very easy to lead discussions and opinions from Saturday on the result. The temptation is to be disappointed with a late goal against us, but the reality is that it shows signs of our progress. Our performance was outstanding and there were very few problems about the way we played. I was delighted with how the players picked up from last week’s game and continued with their intensity and nature of their forward play. I am expecting the same again in the game against Crawley. Another home game, another chance to put our foot down and play in the same manner.

“WE SHOULD HAVE CONFIDENCE IN OURSELVES” Results do not just happen. You have to make them happen. We have gone toe-totoe with Swindon, Forest Green, Walsall and Sutton in our recent performances. We should have confidence in ourselves. One thing you try to do as a manager is create some momentum and rhythm in your team. That is often about how you think as a group of people. We are building momentum and with that comes confidence. We have to continue our mindset, and that will make us competitive in every game we play in. We have got 21 games to go, and 21 opportunities to compete for points in every game. I have had plenty of experience in players joining a different environment in January, and muscular injuries are always more likely. Surfaces, training and rhythm of work are all different. We are being careful

with Luke O’Neill. He trained last week but I thought that three games in ten days would be more of a risk than I need to take. Ed Upson similar. Michael Bostwick and Elliott List are both back in training. We trust all of our players, it is not just about the new ones. It is about a squad that is fit and healthy for the remaining games. We have a competitive game against Crawley, then a long trip to Hartlepool. There are all sorts of stresses on the squad, and I have to be shrewd in utilising all the resources I have.

BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 18 JANUARY It’s not hard to spot the result that stands out above others on this date in history; Boro’s 4-0 demolition on the road at Cambridge United two years ago was as euphoric as it was completely unexpected. Stuck firmly in the doldrums at the foot of the League Two table, our performance at the Abbey Stadium genuinely was as good as it got that season. Before that, the picture on 18 January over the years is certainly mixed – and 3-1 appears to be a familiar scoreline as well. For better or for worse, three of our six past outings on this date (excluding the aforementioned Cambridge trip) ended with one team scoring three to the other’s one. Sadly, the other team takes precedence on that front. Of course Martin Gittings scored on this date in history. Alas, it couldn’t stop us sliding to a 3-1 defeat at Dorking back in 1992. Meanwhile, Barry Fry’s Barnet side eased past us a year later in Round Two of the Herts Senior Cup. We did have one 3-1 scoreline that went in our favour, however. That came on 18 January 2003 at home to Nuneaton Borough in the Nationwide Conference. Stuart Fraser, Robin Trott, and Justin Richards scored the goals as John Dreyer extended his unbeaten run as temporary Boro’ boss to four

14

matches after the Boxing Day dismissal of Wayne Turner. Overall, the bottom line for this particular date is that Boro’ have a record they can certainly improve upon. And 2020 can serve as perfect inspiration to make it two wins in two games on this date. Or that’s the hope, at least… 1986 Hemel Hempstead Town 1-2 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North (Armsby, Myers) * 1992 Dorking 3-1 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Division One (Gittings) 1993 Stevenage Borough 1-3 Barnet, Herts Senior Cup R2 (OG) 1997 Bath City 1-1 Stevenage Borough, FA Trophy R1 (Browne) 2003 Stevenage Borough 3-1 Nuneaton Borough, Nationwide Conference (Fraser, Trott, Richards) 2014 Stevenage 0-1 Notts County, Sky Bet League One 2020 Cambridge United 0-4 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two (List, Cassidy, Carter, Lakin) *BoroGuide is missing the full lineup for this game. YOU AGAIN? CRAWLEY TOWN Ah, Crawley Town – as familiar as our opponents get these days. Just four teams have crossed our paths more times than the Reds; Forest Green (also of this parish) among them. Our two meetings this season, starting with this game, will see them draw level with Yeovil Town on 33 past encounters too.

So, a little bit of maths should make you realise this is now the 32nd time we’ve played Crawley Town over the years. Boro’ currently have 15 wins on the board, while the West Sussex side trail on 10 victories. In the middle, there have been six stalemates – including our most recent clash. A somewhat frustrating last day of last season saw us lose the lead three times as our guests bagged a point; their third equaliser coming in the second minute of stoppage time. Our visit to the The People’s Pension Stadium in mid-February also proved dramatic. The history books will show that we came home with a 1-0 win. But it came courtesy of a stunning strike from Elliot Osborne. And we also needed our on-loan stopper David Stockdale to save a last minute penalty to preserve the points. Who could know that, when we met for the first time on 17 March 1988 in the Knights Floodlit League quarter finals, we’d get to know the Reds so well? They came out on top that day. And it’d be 16 years and three levels higher in the pyramid (for us, certainly) when we’d get a chance to avenge that defeat; Boro’ winning our first-ever league clash by one goal to nil in October 2004. But for the 2015-6 season when we lost both league encounters to them, we’ve never really let them get much of an upper hand against us. Mind you, a word of warning – the Reds claimed the first of their two wins on Boxing Day that year (albeit at their place). It’s the only other time we’ve met each other on 26 December before. We just hope that’s not an omen. Otherwise, you might start thinking that lightening really can strike twice in the same place…

ACADEMY

ood afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Lamex Stadium. It has been a busy period for the Academy since our Christmas hiatus, we have seen some terrific performances from our schoolboys and the apprentices alike during this period. Our staff, in particular the Phase Leads, work incredibly hard to provide a challenging and exciting games programme for the players, with no greater example of this coming over the past fortnight. Last weekend our U9-13’s made the journey to the North-West to take on Manchester City, giving a good account of themselves and enjoying the remarkable facilities. The U14s made the comparatively short journey to Tottenham and faired really well in a tournament format with Spurs and Leicester and just this last weekend, we hosted Portsmouth and travelled to Nottingham Forest, Norwich and Fulham with our U13s, U14s and U15s respectively. We continue to develop of Coaching Team and since my last programme notes, we have added a new U9s Lead, an U15s Lead and U16s Lead, so a warm welcome to those gentlemen who have thrown themselves in to our environment, embracing our developmental culture and

are contributing to challenging our young players to get better every single day. The work going on in the U18s has been really engaging, with the U18 Lead Chris working with Ronnie and stretching the group individually and collectively every session and the performances and results have reflected this with the team going on a recent 8-game unbeaten run. We continue to develop our Coaching Team through CPD, with our latest instalment focussing on creating the learning environment and intervention strategies. I have to thank the coaches themselves who are incredibly open and committed to their own development, with a focus on how they can impact the enjoyment, progress and learning of our young players. Enjoy the game! IEUAN LEWIS - Academy Head of Coaching

WOMEN 0 OAKLANDS WOLVES 6 STEVENAGE FCW 1 Grace Brooks, 2 Ellie Gregg, 3 Sophie Davidson, 5 Lucy Webster (c), 6 Vicky Neal, 8 Holly Greenwood, 9 Jodie Bellinger, 10 Amy Makewell, 11 Dionne Manning, 12 Kate French, 18 Shianne Swarres Subs: 13 Te’a Oldroyd, 15 Sophia Sharos, 16 Emily Schofield, 20 Paige Pryor

A dominant Stevenage FCW saw us run out 6-0 winners in our Hertfordshire County Cup semi-final against Oaklands Wolves as we continued our good run of form since the turn of the year and booked our place in the final for the seventh consecutive season. Stevenage FCW started on the front foot from the first whistle and had the ball in the back of the net inside 7 minutes, however, the offside flag was raised. It was relentless from the ‘Boro as wave after wave of attack came forward. It took some resolute defending and several quality saves from the opposition goalkeeper to keep the score at 0-0. It took until added time at the end of the half for the breakthrough to come. Striker, Jodie Bellinger received the ball in the left channel and was clipped from behind as she drove into the box and a penalty was awarded. Holly Greenwood stepped up and coolly dispatched the ball from the spot past the ‘keeper who didn’t even move. The second half started in similar fashion to the first but this time it took only 2 minutes from the re-start for the second goal to come. ‘Boro’s player of the match, Kate French, picked up the ball mid-way inside the opposition half, carried the ball forward unchallenged and picked out winger, Dionne Manning with a perfectly weighted cut-back to slam into the back of the net for her first goal for the club.

www.stevenagefc.com

It got even better for Stevenage on the hour mark, as centre back, Vicky Neal, got her second goal in the space of two weeks as she glanced a wicked in-swinging corner from Amy Makewell. Ten minutes later, it was time for the Captain, Lucy Webster to get in on the act. Webster carried the ball out from the back with a trademark run that evaded half the opposition team before laying it off out wide for French to deliver the ball into the box where the Skipper was able to smash the ball in from close range following a fumble at the near post. With 10 minutes of the game left, supersub, Paige Pryor continued her rich vein of form in-front of goal by making it 5-0 to the ‘Boro when she got on the end of an incredible reverse through ball from Bellinger and calmly slotting it past the ‘keeper. There was still time for one more goal when Pryor added another goal deep into stoppage time as again got on the end of another Bellinger through ball and struck it into the far corner. Full time and Stevenage FCW progressed into the final of the Hertfordshire County Cup, winning 6-0. The final will be played on Sunday 20 March 2022 and we would welcome all ‘Boro fans to come down and support our girls as we aim to win some silverware this season. We want the County Ground to be loud and rocking with your support – come on you ‘Boro!

24

A draw at Carlisle on Saturday was preceded by wins over Northampton, Colchester and Orient and capped a good turnaround in form. Crawley started the season in trouble with three defeats and a draw from their first five and after a recovery of sorts four successive league defeats in October saw them slide down the table. Despite an FA Cup exit at home to Tranmere and defeat in the EFL Trophy, recent league form has been much improved and Boro sit eight points behind our guests tonight.

DID YOU KNOW?

•T he Reds love a big name as boss and in their league career have seen John Gregory, Dean Saunders, Sean O’Driscoll, Richie Barker, Harry Kewell and Steve Coppell, in the hotseat. • Crawley’s highest league finish was 14th in 2013-14 in League One, their first of just two seasons in the third tier. • Crawley sent 21 seasons in the Southern League Premier before finally clinching promotion to the Conference in 2004.

Stevenage FC v Crawley Town FC

ONE TO WATCH

THE BOSS John Yems was appointed as Manager on a contract initially until the end of the 2019/20 in December 2019. This is his second spell in charge of the Reds. Alongside Ben Judge and Dave Woozley, he led Reds to Conference safety on the last day of the 200607 season after they had started the campaign with a ten-point deduction. He was assistant to Boro boss Paul Tisdale for 18 months from 2009 and then spent six years with AFC Bournemouth and played an important part in the Cherries’ rise from League One to the Premier League in his role as Football Operations Manager. He was part of Eddie Howe’s management team and had responsibility for coaching and recruitment. He has also worked at Fulham, Crystal Palace, Millwall, Torquay and Gillingham.

Striker Ashley Nadesan joined the Reds on a three-year contract in July 2019. He made his name locally with his goalscoring exploits for Horley Town in the Combined Counties League. Having started his career in their youth teams as a centre-half, he became a prolific striker and over the course of 2013-15 he notched 99 league and cup goals. That form alerted several League clubs and in July 2016 he joined Fleetwood Town, making his League debut at the start of the 2017-18 season against AFC Wimbledon. Later that season Ashley joined Carlisle United on loan and he also spent the first half of the 2019-20 season at Brunton Park before returning to Fleetwood. During the last two seasons he has scored 14 League and Cup goals in 67 appearances for Fleetwood and Carlisle.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS Stevenage Town team in March 1932, in front of their new main stand.

GREETINGS TO CRAWLEY This evening the No.1 ‘Newtown’ welcomes the No.2 ‘Newtown’ to what should be a most interesting and entertaining game. Crawley is the club I tend to ‘benchmark’ most with Stevenage. We joined the Southern League at the same time (1963), we were both promoted to the Football League within a year of each other, our respective towns have similar populations and our home attendances are alike too. A warm welcome to John Yems and his team. John was Paul Tisdale’s No.2 at Exeter for a while, so a Boxing Day reunion it is!

Congratulations to David and thank you everyone who has signed up so far.

MEMORY LANE The South Stand. Some remember it as the “MFI” end. When the stand was built over 20 years ago, it was named after the then sponsor, “Buildbase”. Today, it’s called the “Austins” stand again after the current sponsor. Austins are funeral directors. However, did you know that Austins used to be a building company, and that they built the original main stand for Stevenage Town FC at the old London Road ground.
