THE CHAIRMAN
G
PHIL WALLACE
ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Crawley Town.
As we approach our last home game of the season, I can’t help but look back to this time last season to see how far we’ve come. We are trying to build something on and off the pitch that can last, but to do that you have to start with the right people and create an environment where everyone works for each other and wants to be the best they can be. We are getting there now. Our off the field activities have been widely applauded and rightly so. We run a tight ship with great people behind the scenes, we invest in infrastructure for future generations to enjoy and we sit at the heart of our community, always available when folk need us. I have to admit that when people ask me why I do it – these are the key reasons why. There is an enormous satisfaction in knowing that you manage an organisation that matters to so many local people. On the pitch, it’s a little harder as the ball can hit the post and go in or hit the post and come out. So, to a certain extent luck plays a huge part in results no matter how hard you work or how well you prepare to win games. Looking back to last year, we seemed to have no luck at all, and the difference now is the collective spirit and confidence that permeates right through the squad. Confidence comes from great coaching and great management. Recruitment is also a major factor and our efforts in January proved to be outstanding. We now have something to build on and we know the direction we’re going, so the future looks exciting. We’ve been in the Top 7 in the last 15, 20, 25 and 30 game form stats, so if we hadn’t messed up our start, we’d be serious contenders for a play-off place this season… Bring on next season! We are shortly addressing our season
www.stevenagefc.com
ticket situation and we’ll make contact with all our season ticket holders shortly to inform them of their options. We’ve decided that next season we’ll only open season ticket sales to existing holders, as we really have no idea how many fans will be allowed to watch our games. Once we have clear guidance and continuity, we will reconsider but we don’t want a situation again where we have sold more tickets than the capacity we are allowed, due to crowd restrictions. I’m really hoping that next season we can welcome all our fans back. It’s been a real challenge without crowds, and we can’t wait to welcome you back.

STEVENAGE FC TO JOIN ENGLISH FOOTBALL IN SOCIAL MEDIA SWITCH-OFF This weekend Stevenage Football Club will unite with all clubs and take a stance against online abuse and discrimination. Along with The FA, Premier League, EFL, FA Women’s Super League, FA Women’s Championship, PFA LMA, PGMOL, Kick It Out and the FSA, the Club will be boycotting social media from 3pm Friday April 30th until 11:59pm Monday May 3rd. In response to the continued discrimination and abuse received online by players and those connected with football, Stevenage Football Club will not publish any content across its official Twitter, Instagram and Facebook pages. This includes our Academy, Youth, Women, and Foundation channels. We believe that that social media companies are not doing enough to tackle abuse and discrimination across its platforms. We cannot sit back as players, their families, staff and fans continue to receive irrational hate. Stevenage Football Club therefore will join English Football in boycotting social media for this period, highlighting the need for action – including filtering, blocking, swift removals of posts, improved verification process and reregistration prevention - from those companies. The Club actively encourages all stakeholders and supporters to join them in this stance.

John Yems’ Red Devils visit The Lamex Stadium this weekend for Boro’s penultimate game of the season, and last on home turf. After Stevenage’s derby day antics on Saturday saw Luke Norris’ second half header deny Cambridge United a promotion party, Alex Revell’s men will look to take that momentum into the final two games of the campaign. There was last-minute drama in the reverse fixture in West Sussex, which saw David Stockdale’s penalty save ensure Elliot Osborne’s stunner sealed all three points in an important win for Boro. iFollow Match Passes cost just £10 and are available to buy now. BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 01 MAY As we go into May, the season really is in its final knockings. If matters aren’t decided already, it might only take one more throw of the dice to decide the fate of a season. But it’s rare enough in the grand scheme of things for Boro’ to be turning out on May Day itself. Just six times over the years have we done so. And it’s more than 20 years since we last did so; losing 1-0 at Kettering Town as a 1999-00 campaign that started with a bang ended with a whimper. It was also Steve Wignall’s last game in charge (remember him?) as, two days later, he scampered off to Doncaster. That feels like a bum note to kick off our last look back of the current Martin Gittings
campaign. So, let’s lift the spirits and head back to 1986. In a real end-ofseason cliffhanger, Boro’ travelled across to Barton Rovers knowing that three points were a must if we were to hold off Kingsbury Town and secure the Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North title. Goals from Martin Gittings (his 33rd of the season) and Phil Driver did the business – and we were champions for a second time. It’s hard to compare other results to such a big moment on this date in history. Our 3-1 win at Yeovil Town on the last day of the 1998-9 season saw us finish in sixth; 12 points behind champions Cheltenham Town and three adrift of the top five – not that we had any playoffs to chase back then. Who knows what might have happened had Victor Green not chosen to pull the trigger in December ’98; firing Paul Fairclough when we were still riding high in the table. 1982 Ampthill Rovers 0-0 Stevenage Borough, United Counties League Premier Division 1984 Stevenage Borough 1-3 Baldock Town, Woolwich Trophy (Marshall) 1986 Barton Rovers 0-2 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North (M Gittings, Driver) 1993 Staines Town 2-2 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Premier Division (Gittings, Alzapiedi) 1999 Yeovil Town 1-3 Stevenage Borough, Football Conference (Alford 2, Strouts) 2000 Kettering Town 1-0 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference

YOU AGAIN? CRAWLEY TOWN Where Stevenage goes, Crawley aren’t far behind. Just two months after Stevenage was named as the UK’s first New Town in 1946, Crawley became the second. When we were promoted to the Football League in 2010, the Reds came up the following season. And when we continued our rise into League One in 2011, the West Sussex team were only 12 months in repeating the trick. They even came back down to League One a year after we did. Are they now waiting for us to make our next move? This long-running chapter all started in October 2004 when Boro’ recorded a 1-0 home win over Crawley Town. And promotion to the Conference is maybe the only time the Reds weren’t so hot on our heels; taking 10 years to follow Boro’ into the top flight of non-league football. Believe it or not, however, it’s not where our story even starts either. There was a little pre-amble long before the Reds became a familiar face.
www.stevenagefc.com
Fair play if you remember that too; a 1-0 defeat in the Knights Floodlit League Quarter Final in March 1988. Now, we’ve gone on to meet a nice round 30 times over the years. As things stand, Boro’ hold the balance of power; winning 15, compared to the Reds’ 10 victories. And our recent past isn’t looking too bad. Out of the last nine, we’ve won five - including this season’s return fixture at theirs – and drawn two. All in all, however, there’s no huge pattern to our results. The best run either of us have been on was our fourmatch winning streak between 2004 and 2005. Mind you, one of those was a Conference Cup Quarter Final - if you want to count that.

ith the end of the season upon us reflection is certainly key. Four scholars to pro contracts, 7 x U16 players to scholars, the creation of our new B/ U23 team and the launch of hybrid squads in the Youth Development Phase. Add to this an ever growing Pathway programme and an expanding College programme and it’s clear to see the Academy is growing and keeping up with the demands of the modern game and culture. The end of the season also gives an opportunity for staff to take a well earned rest from the demands of relentless working patterns which although not uncommon in academy life still take their toll. We end the season with a new academy

administrator in Ben Brotherton who has been magnificent since joining us from Bournemouth, a new Head of Medicine Matteo Brunelli, who joined us from China where he was working with the Chinese Olympic swimming squad and has added tremendous skills and knowledge to the department and a new Lead Foundation Phase Coach in Jamal Campbell Ryce who has made a really smooth transition from playing into coaching and has added a real personality and insight into the demands of being a player. As an academy we are pleased with the outcomes of the season and continue to try and push the barriers to achieve more. Enjoy the game, enjoy your Summer and fingers crossed we will all be able to see games live at the start of next season! ROBBIE O’ KEEFE – Academy manager

ince the re-start of football for tiers 3 downwards in the women’s football pyramid, Stevenage FCW First Team have played two friendly games – drawing 3-3 against Cambridge United and winning 2-5 against MK Dons Development side. In both games, SFCW fought back from losing positions to rescue the match. In the Cambridge game, the goals came courtesy of Aisling White (who scored on her first senior start), a Lucy Webster trademark freekick from 30 yards out and a spectacular piledriver from a tight angle from Kristal Clarke. After the match, the gaffer, Karl Davy had the following to say: “The game was always going to be difficult, it was our first game and I’ve had two weeks under my belt to try and implement new things and ask them to play in a completely different style to what they’re used to. The first half we were a little bit shaky when they scored in the first 5 minutes but we came back and equalised through a corner and then the last 15 minutes we blew out and they scored another 2. To come back in the second half and win the half 0-2 to draw 3-3, I’ll take that as a win”. The first team secured a resounding 2-5 win against The Dons’ Development side

with Nicole Emmings opening the scoring inside 10 minutes with a well-placed shot, Louise Godden firing an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from the edge of the box to bring us level at 2-2, a new signing (who will be announced in due course) made the perfect start scoring on her debut, Holly Greenwood continuing her good form post-season with an audacious chipped effort from the edge of the D and Emmings rounding off the scoring with a diving glancing header. After the game, Emmings had the following to say: “I think in the first half we maybe relaxed too early after going 0-1 up and they hit us with 2 quick goals in successive minutes, which set us back a bit. At half time we re-grouped and we came out in the second half. I feel we enjoyed ourselves in the second half playing with confidence. We’ve now scored 8 goals in 2 games, which for us is huge. Hopefully that will continue”. The first team are back in action next Friday, 7 May, in a friendly match at home to Billericay Town under the lights. Unfortunately, this game will be played behind closed doors. FOLLOW THE WOMEN:

WELCOME CLUB MATTERS It’s not often we get to face a fellow New Town in competitive action but a delve into the history of our opponents shows that we might not have as much in common as first thought. Boro may be one of the youngest teams around with our formation in 1976, but it still comes as something of a surprise to learn that our fellow post war pioneer visitors can trace their history back to 1896.
At that point Crawley Football Cub was formed, mainly to play in the Sussex County League. A disbanding and reforming in the 1930s eventually led to a change of name to Crawley Town in 1958 before joining the Southern league. On the fringe of the top tier of non league for some 30 years, Crawley Town finally reached the conference with promotion in 2004. This had been done against the backdrop of administration and a change of ground, in 1997 Crawley left their home of 48 years, Town Mead, to move to the newly build stadium Broadfield. Again financial difficulties loomed large as the club went full time, but after Steve Evans took over as boss in 2007

they exceeded all expectations and won promotion to the Football League four years later. The Reds won promotion to Division One in their first season in the League set up and stayed in the third tier for three years. This is now their sixth consecutive season in the fourth tier. This season has been one of solid progress for the Reds, a lack of consistency has kept them on the fringe of the play-off battle although a 3-0 FA Cup win at home to Leeds was a high point - before a 2-1 Cup exit at Bournemouth followed.
THE BOSS John Yems was appointed Head Coach on a contract in December 2019. It is John’s second spell in charge of the Reds. Alongside Ben Judge and Dave
Woozley, he led Reds to Conference safety on the last day of the 2006-07 season after they had started the campaign with a ten-point deduction. John was assistant to Exeter manager Paul Tisdale for 18 months from 2009 and then spent six years with AFC Bournemouth and played an important part in the Cherries’ rise from League One to the Premier League in his role as Football Operations Manager. He was part of Eddie Howe’s management team and had responsibility for coaching and recruitment. He has also worked at Fulham, Crystal Palace, Millwall, Torquay and Gillingham. John has spent the last couple of years scouting for various clubs including Newcastle United and has been a regular at The People’s Pension Stadium this season. He is a UEFA A License coach.
WATCH OUT FOR JORDAN TUNNICLIFFE Former West Brom trainee Jordan signed for Reds in July 2019 on a two-year contract after leaving AFC Fylde, where he was a regular for the last two seasons. The 27-year-old central defender had joined Jordan from Kidderminster Harriers. He started his career in West Brom’s Academy before joining Barnsley, where he didn’t make a first-team appearance. This season he has made 37 league appearances, scoring three times while he appeared four times in the Red’s FA Cup run this campaign, netting twice.

ell, we’re almost there. After today’s match against Crawley Town and next weekend’s trip to Scunthorpe United, our season will be over. And what a season it’s been. Many were sceptical about the season going ahead in the first place, many were worried it would never be completed, but football has proved just how resilient it is and by sticking to strict health rules the game has managed to haul itself through the season, a season with such a massive reduction in income that it’s a miracle all 72 EFL clubs have managed to remain in business. But now there is light at the end of the tunnel. With the vaccination programme in full swing we can confidently look forward to the 21-22 season being much more like a normal season, with fans being able to watch their team on a regular basis, with as few restrictions as possible. We must say a massive “Thank You” to all

our sponsors and advertisers who have continued to support us during these extraordinary times. Many of them too have struggled over the last year but in conversations we’ve had with them, they’re as keen as we are to see football return next season. We’re already planning ahead, looking forward to welcoming as many of you as possible back to the Lamex Stadium. Off the field too we’re putting together a series of events, starting with a Sportsman’s Dinner in late September, with full details to be announced during the next few days. We’re also hopeful too that we’ll be able to offer full matchday hospitality and sponsorship packages as well as re-opening our Executive Boxes at the start of next season. Have a great Summer, see you back here for the 21-22 season. For further details contact clivea@stevenagefc.com

CRAWLEY TOWN It’s the Battle of the New Towns again. Welcome to the Reds’ players, directors and officials.
COME HOME, TO STEVENAGE Some of you have commented on my recent letter in the newspaper regarding the European Super League (ESL), and I thank you for them. The response from supporters of every club in the country proved to be a pivotal moment in the history of the game. The FSA’s mantra citing “revenue before reputation” clearly struck a cord amongst real fans everywhere. I said it last week, and I’ll say it again, if you are simply a fare-paying “customer” of Arsenal or Spurs, then come to Stevenage where true fans and supporters are treated with dignity and respect – unlike the “six” clubs owned by absentee billionaires who care not a jot about you. Now is the time. Come back home – to Stevenage.
ARTEFACT And so, to the last piece of antiquity this season from years gone by, here at Stevenage. It’s an individual player trophy awarded to Dave Allison. Dave came to Stevenage during the summer of 1959 having previously played for the London University team. His first game with The Stripes was on August 29th in a home tie against Woodford. Effectively making the no.11 shirt his own, Dave went on to score 38 goals in 82 starts for the club. In season 1961-62, his tally alone was 12 goals in 18 games! Little wonder his trophy is in recognition of services to the club. Dave’s last game for the club was
