ood afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Exeter City. I always look forward to playing Exeter. They always seem to put out good sides and are always there or thereabouts. I have a lot of time for Julian Tagg and you have to admire their Academy development, which he’s been passionate about for the 20 odd years I’ve known him. Just look at some of the lads they’ve developed and sold to clubs - Ollie Watkins and Ethan Ampadu are just a couple in recent times, but there’s been a long, long list. Not only do they develop these lads, but they have the nerve to hold out for the right money and the right club for the lad. That’s not an easy thing to do when your club needs the funds, believe me. We had a similar situation with both Ben Wilmot and Leke Drake, and it took a lot of nerve to turn away early bids and wait for the right club at the right time. You need some luck as well. I know there were other clubs in for Ollie Watkins for example, but Brentford was a great choice and the sell on they’ve recently received just
www.stevenagefc.com
makes it that much easier to continue growing. Like us they’ve improved their stadium and, like us, they’d very much like to move up the pyramid. They sit in 6th place as we go into this game, against our 17th place – but only three points separating us. This just goes to show how tight the league is. The win at Oxford on Tuesday night was well deserved. We could have been a few down early on but clawed our way back to dominate the game and, I thought, thoroughly deserved our win. This is the time in a season when a team starts to settle down. Good sides start to show some continuity and I’d like to think we’ve re-set and found ourselves again, after a strong start and then losing our way for a couple of games last month. This happens and it makes us stronger as a group – confidence in high throughout the club and we want to start making a name for ourselves by winning, week after week. Hearing our fans getting behind the team makes a huge difference, so let’s hear you at the game! Enjoy the match!

Our mascot for the clash with Exeter today is 9-year-old Louis Forbes. Stevenage based Louis is a pupil at Almond Hill School in the town and lists football and gaming as his main hobbies. Here’s hoping that his favourite Boro player Luther James-Wildin impresses with a shut-out at the back today and our lucky mascot brings us three points.

ack in league Two and at the half way stage of the season Boro had gone five games without success. And with bogey side Exeter City making their way to the Lamex things weren’t looking promising for this clash. As it transpired, Boro got just the return they needed though it took a last-gasp strike to seal the three points. In a close game, Ryan Brunt came close
for Boro while Alex Nicholls hit the top of the bar for the Grecians. The mood changed however when sub Charlie Lee hit the woodwork on the half volley before he grabbed the winner with six minutes left. Tom Pett played a key role in the strike, finding space to drill the ball across the goal for Lee to slot a low shot into the corner and end the visitors’ run of nine games without defeat. BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 09 OCTOBER All in all, we have a decent enough record on this date in history. In nine previous outings on 9 October between 1982 and 2010, Boro’ won five and drew three. Just once did we end up on the wrong side of the result in that period; a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Morecambe – despite yet another goal for the habitual goalscorer that was Carl Alford. And, in among those wins, we can certainly find some that need deeper exploration. The 1993-4 FA Cup Third Qualifying Round draw sent us down to East Thurrock United on this date. It was our reward for (eventually) getting past Wembley after two replays in the First Qualifying Round, followed by a ding-dong 4-3 win at home to Corby Town in the preceding round. Here, however, we decided to make sure there was no doubt around. Martin Gittings, in his own inimitable way, scored four past our Essex hosts as we ran out 5-1 winners. Dave Venables added a fifth, but you get the unfortunate impression that everything else was a footnote to Gitts’ performance. As any true Boro’ fan will tell you, there’s nothing better than a win against Hitchin Town. No matter the competition, beating the Canaries is an important assignment. That’s just what we did on this day in 1990. Job done, right? Hitchin faded over the horizon as we rose up the leagues and Woking stepped into their shoes. Alas, we couldn’t do a similar number on the Cards when we met in 2007. Our Blue Square Premier clash would end all square
16
despite Craig Dobson scoring early on. Not one of the all-time classics between us and them, that’s for sure. So, that’s 9 October in a nutshell from a Boro’ perspective. Well, apart from our last game on this date. But the events of our Checkatrade Trophy South Group G tie in 2018 against Charlton Athletic simply don’t bear mentioning. Why not ask us again on Halloween instead? That’s a perfect night for telling scary tales and gory stories. 1982 Stevenage Borough 1-1 Uxbridge, FA Vase Preliminary Round (Stevens) 1984 Berkhamsted Town 2-3 Stevenage Borough, Hitachi Cup R1 (Armsby 2, R Marshall) 1989 Stevenage Borough 1-0 Billericay Town, Vauxhall Opel League Division 2 North (Smith) 1990 Hitchin Town 1-2 Stevenage Borough, Herts Senior Cup R1 (Hughes, Hardy) 1993 East Thurrock United 1-5 Stevenage Borough, FA Cup R3Q (Gittings 4, Venables) 1999 Stevenage Borough 1-2 Morecambe, Nationwide Conference (Alford) 2004 Leigh RMI 1-2 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Elding, Maamria) 2007 Stevenage Borough 1-1 Woking, Blue Square Premier (Dobson) 2010 Rotherham United 1-1 Stevenage, npower League Two (Mousinho) 2018 Stevenage 0-8 Charlton Athletic, Checkatrade Trophy South Group G

YOU AGAIN? HARTLEPOOL UNITED Do bogey teams exist? Well, we’d argue that Welling United are a strong argument to prove that point for a start. And, if such sides do exist, then we’re counting the Grecians as one of ours. With more than twice as many victories than us to show from our 29 past meetings, it’s fair to say our head-to-head record needs a much greater sense of balance. Over the years, we’ve had some shockers and shambles at their hands. The favour hasn’t necessarily been returned. A 3-1 home win at the Lamex in April 2018 is the last time we got the better of them; Alex Revell with a hattrick. But that was eight meetings ago now. And we’ve lost all but one of the seven that have since followed. If that isn’t bad enough, that April 2018 win is one of only TWO since we followed them back down into League Two in 2014 (the Grecians were relegated in 2012). Charlie Lee scored the only goal of the
www.stevenagefc.com
game just before Christmas 2014 to secure the three points. It hasn’t always been like that, although Exeter City are usually one of the stronger sides in any league we’ve been in at the same time. Think how often they’ve been in the mix for the League Two playoffs recently. And, back in non-league, the Grecians finished 6th, 6th, 7th, 5th and 4th (the latter two being good enough for the Conference playoffs). It was back in those heady days between September 2004 and March 2006 that we had our heyday against them. As it goes, we actually won four on the bounce; including a topsy-turvy meeting at home on 11 December 2004 in which we came from 2-1 down to win 3-2. But that’s all a long time ago now. Just one win on the spin for us would be enough…

ACADEMY
G
ood afternoon and welcome to the Lamex for this afternoon’s fixture against Exeter City. Firstly I’d like to thank everyone that supported us last weekend for the academy day, it’s a great day for us as not only do people get to see what great work goes on here, but also people get to see some of the talented young players we have within the academy. The fixture against Southend didn’t go to plan results wise, but it was a great occasion for the young players to play in front of a few more people than they usually do so thank you for that. On another note the 21/23s games that I have taken in the last month have been highly beneficial for our players and really competitive games, we have come up against really strong sides including Luton who fielded some experienced first team players, this was valuable learning for our young players who did themselves no harm and stood up to the challenge and came out the other side with huge amounts of credit. We as staff are working tirelessly every day to make these young players good enough not just on the pitch but off the pitch so they can make the move up to the first team environment and become first team players. This is what I’m sure you as fans want to see and I can tell you this is what us as staff want, our young players making first team debuts. We have seen players make that move and most recently we are delighted that Sam Tinubu has started to make that step. He’s been in the squad and on the bench for the first team, on top of this Sam signed his first professional contract, well done Sam on behalf of everyone at the academy. So I suppose I have only one last thing
20
to say and on not such a positive note we say goodbye to a good friend of mine and a valuable member of the academy team Jamal Campbell-Ryce who has decided to leave and take up a more senior role at Peterborough United. Thanks for all your hard work and we wish Jamma all the best in his new role. Enjoy the game, get behind The Gaffer and the team, let’s put another 3 points on the board. WOMEN After a difficult couple of weeks following the departure of First Team Manager, Karl Davy, Stevenage FCW picked up their first points of the season under the management of Interim First Team Manager, Fadi Mazloum. We caught up with Fadi at training this week after he oversaw a 0-1 away win against Enfield Town and a 0-2 away win against Harlow Town. These wins came either side of a heavy home defeat to AFC Wimbledon: Fadi, what a difference a week makes, how do you assess our victory over Harlow Town last Wednesday? I think it was superb. I think the way we played was brilliant as well. We had a plan and we executed it to the way that we wanted do it so it was a really good game. What pleased you the most about that win? The fact that we’re pulling away from the bottom three is the most important thing right now. Our job is to survive and the way that we’re playing at the minute, I think we’re good. That’s two wins in three games now, what do you feel that you’re getting out of these players that previous coaches perhaps couldn’t? I think there’s a lot more belief in the team now, there’s a lot more cameraderie; I think they’re together a lot and I think they’re enjoying it a lot more. I think we’ve brought that fun back that the coaches had at the start of the season, which sort of disappeared and I think that’s brought the results on as well. What’s the mood currently like in the camp? I think it’s really good, I think the girls are doing all the right things. I think that in
www.stevenagefc.com
terms of what we’re trying to execute and our plan, it’s coming to fruition. We go again this Sunday against Cambridge United, what are your thoughts on this game? I’ve got mixed reviews really, because Cambridge had been doing well at the beginning and they’ve picked up some weird results like losing 6-0 last week; so you just don’t know what’s going to happen. For us, we’re just trying to take it game by game and focussing on that game. Looking at how they’ve played I definitely think we can win the game and that’s what our objective is going to be. Exeter head to Boro in sixth place in the table but with an even more impressive record which shows they are hard to beat. Despite four draws from their past six league games, the Grecians have actually only been beaten once in
26
League Two action this campaign, that a 3-0 reverse at Orient on the first day of the season. Even in their cup setbacks Exeter have only been overturned on penalties, losing to Wycombe after a 0-0 draw in the League Cup and a Chelsea U-21 side after a 1-1 result in the EFL Trophy. A win today will see Stevenage pull level on points with Exeter in the chasing pack, it really is that tight this season.
DID YOU KNOW?
•T he exploits of the early Exeter City team and their South American tour are well known now but the Grecians were the first team to play the full Brazil side in 1914. • I n the early days of their Football League life Exeter sold hot prospect Dick Pym to Bolton in a deal which allowed them to buy St James Park outright. •A rsenal fans will be interested to know that club legend Cliff Bastin was actually a local lad to Exeter and made an impact with the Grecians when just 16 years of age.
Stevenage FC v Exeter City
THE BOSS Matt Taylor was appointed manager of Exeter City on June 1, 2018 following the departure of longserving boss Paul Tisdale. His first season in charge of the Grecians saw them finish ninth in Sky Bet League Two, only a point outside the play-off places. Matt made more than 150 appearances for the Grecians as a player. He spent a number of years at non-league level, before getting his break at Exeter City in 2007 where he helped them to promotion in his first season at the club by making 46 appearances at the centre of defence and scoring nine goals. Matt then played 34 games the following season to help the Grecians to back-to-back promotions to League One and featured heavily for City in the third tier of English football before moving to Charlton the following summer. Matt returned to Exeter in the autumn of 2016 as a defensive coach and as under-23s manager, led City to a successful Under-23 Premier League Cup campaign. The Grecians managed to top their group, which included under-23 sides from Brighton & Hove Albion, Hull City and Sunderland, before being knocked out by Wolverhampton Wanderers, on penalties, at the quarter-final stage.
ONE TO WATCH Alex Hartridge put pen to paper on his first professional contract at St James Park in April 2017. He normally plays at left-back or left-sided centre-half and spent the majority of last season on loan at Conference South side Bath City. Alex made his first team debut with an impressive performance against Grimsby Town on Saturday, December 29, 2018. Hartridge cemented his place in the starting line up in 2020/21, forming a great central defensive partnership with Rory McArdle and scoring two goals - one each against AFC Fylde in the FA Cup and Swindon in the EFL Trophy - and making a total of 29 appearances in League Two.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS EXETER The Grecians are here, and very welcome they are too. Nick Hawker is chair of the Exeter City Supporters’ Trust and celebrates just over 52 years as being an active fan of the club. Personally, I can cite 53 years as an active fan here at Stevenage, so that evidently makes the pair of us “of an age”, I guess . . .
HISTORY IN FOCUS A local brewery has recent created a new beer to commemorate an old Stevenage Town FC player. They’ve called it “Moving the Goal Posts” and it celebrates the tale of Christmas 1914, when an unauthorised truce broke out between the British and German armies facing each other from their trenches across no-man’s land. Stevenage Town FC player Len Cherry was one of the “Tommies” versus the “Fritz’s” in a game of football which broke out spontaneously, much to the chagrin of the high command. The new beer’s label depicts our Len, in a Stevenage Town strip complete with his helmet, dancing around the iconic Stevenage clock-tower. Len was wounded three times and gassed on five separate occasions, but happily survived the ‘Great War’ returning to his home in Haycroft Road. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery.
INTER-CITY BORO Our next away-day sees the Boro travelling to Oldham on October 16th.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION (FSA) Nominations are now open for the 2021 FSA Awards. This year there are eleven categories ranging from Player of the Year (men & women), Pundit of the Year, Writer of the Year, etc., etc. One category I would draw your attention to is the Fan Media Award. Pretty much every club has a whole range of forums, bloggers, stats men and ‘content creators’ as they’re referred to in the business, all run by fans for the love of their club. We all know that our own club, Stevenage has a number of particularly excellent independent voices online, whether it’s via a website, social media feed or YouTube channel. Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
