GRAHAM WESTLEY GRAHAM WESTLEY WRITES FOR THE FIRST TIME AFTER HIS RETURN AS BORO BOSS

A

Very Merry Xmas to one and all. Phil Wallace gave me the perfect Christmas present when he offered me the opportunity to return to Stevenage today for a 4th crack at the job. We have won 47% of our 477 games together to date. That is our foundation. I’d like to think that my grasp of the English language is adequate but I cannot put into words the joy that it gives me to once again lead the

Stevenage Football Club’s first team. I hope that my eyes may appear bright as I enter the Stadium today, but if you look close I’m sure there will be tears of happiness there. I love this Club and I am thrilled beyond any known adjective to be back. Managing Stevenage is a responsibility that I relish and one that I take very seriously. A Football Club means so much to everybody involved and I will spread the necessary sense of responsibility to entertain and earn points throughout our playing squad on a minute by minute and day by day basis. Be assured of that. You have to be obsessed to succeed and I am obsessed about getting this ‘gig’ right. My first impression of our squad in meeting the lads last week was that I will be leading a fine group of men. Willing listeners, willing learners, lads with a care to be the best that they can be. Lads who know that it is time to dig deeper and step up. They know that I will need to be honest and they have all acknowledged the importance of us all being constructive and positive together about improvements needed. There are reasons that we are currently bottom and we have to address those things not hide from them. Everybody needs to do more. That’s everybody. Obviously. We can all do more and we will all do more. Work harder, work smarter, work in better unison; constantly, relentlessly. The easiest way to be 100% better is for 100 things to be done that make us 1% better. Shared out, that’s 9 per on field player each game, and one for me?! What has gone has gone. It’s up to us all to do the necessary things now to Stevenage FC v Forest Green Rovers

create an ending to this season that we can all look back on with the sense of pride that the Club sets out in its values statement. We cannot change the beginning; but we can sure change the end game. On Saturday, as the Club played its 21st League game and as I prepared to take charge on Monday, Mark agreed to take some calculated risks in both shape and in selection and we paid a short term price. However, I believe those risks were essential in turning Mark’s unbeaten resurgence into consistent winning and I have a certainty that we will reap the rewards of his courage as we now go forwards. I admired his willingness to evolve. Somehow, we need to get our attacking players match fit, assured and firing, and the only way to give them the chance to do that is to support them vigorously as they seek to gain their edge. In order to give attacking players their minutes, Mark had to require our defensive players to cover bigger Stevenage FC v Forest Green Rovers

distances. He knew full well that this might expose them and strain them beyond their current fitness capacities as they regain match level fitness. Seeing that in a tough game helps serve to underline the existing shortfalls and motivate the work that is needed. It is no cause for panic. We just need to learn from the issues. ‘It’s not about how hard you can hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forwards’. We can’t keep playing too many defensive players and hope to ‘nick’ results. This is a time to be brave and do the right things in the big picture of the squad/team. Over the years, I’ve come to learn that shots at goal is a fair reflection of the game that was played. On Saturday, 1721 against says we were edged out. Not crushed. Part of that was organisation as the team tried to play differently and didn’t quite ‘get it’. But we also lacked edge at the 2 ends of the pitch which will be a huge part of my immediate focus and something that I know how to cure. No team of mine will lack edge or organisation for long. Boxing Day is always a special fixture. It is a phenomenal day for me to return to the Club. I sincerely hope that this is our greatest time together and both my heart and my mind are set on delivering our Chairman’s dream for our Club. I know he has the ambition and a player development strategy for the Club to reach the Championship; I know he has a passion for a harmonious Club with a completely united philosophy; and I know that he cares deeply about creating a pride through our on and off field efforts throughout our fan base and community. My goal is to do all I can to help everybody at the Club as much as I humanly can to reach and exceed those targets. There is work to do. So let’s get started. Onwards and Upwards. www.stevenagefc.com | 5

ood afternoon and welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Forest Green Rovers. It’s very hard to write these notes after last Saturday’s result. The only thing that you can do with a result like that is put it behind you, learn from it and move on. Today is the first game of a new GW era. It won’t be an overnight transformation but it will be a transformation. We’ve made the change so we can climb the league and climb the league we will. Until last week we’d conceded 4 goals in the last 8 league games and we’ll be back to that resilience when it comes to Stevenage FC v Forest Green Rovers

defending our goal. The goals for will come if we play with the speed, vitality and confidence that we’ve shown in many of our better games. Last week saw our new stand open for the first time. It was a great moment, but was quickly soured by the result and the position we found ourselves in at 5pm. Now we need to fight back and in every game from now to the end of the season we’ll give everything we have to finish the season in a respectable position and create new ambitions for the next. Get behind the lads today please. Let’s get The Lamex rocking again. Enjoy the match! www.stevenagefc.com | 7

MATCHDAY MASCOT We are delighted to welcome our mascot for today’s match Phoebe Cowley. Football fan Phoebe has travelled all the way from Ashford in Kent to be with us today. The 10-year-old attends Willesborough Juniors and finds time to play for four football teams along with taking part in gymnastics and trampolining. Top of her list of hobbies however is watching her favourite player at Boro which is Jason Cowley - now are their surnames a coincidence?? Have a great afternoon with us Phoebe. t feels like Colchester are our festive friends these days but back in the dim and distant past Boro would often tussle with Barnet on Boxing Day or New Year’s Day. Some 15 years ago Barnet came to Boro with a campaign bubbling nicely for the home side and it was a Christmas cracker which Boro won by the odd goal in three. In front of a bumper crowd of 4,307 the hosts took all three points with goals from Anthony Elding and Dino Maamria. It was also a game which saw an early sub appearance from George Boyd, coming on with just a minute left. Information kindly supplied by www.boroguide.co.uk

ACADEMY

L

ooking back at 2019 from an Academy perspective there have been some really good gains over the past 12 months. At U18s we have seen two scholars to professional contracts courtesy of Jack Smith and Luis Fernandez (pictured). The season started with Alex Revell and Ronnie Henry - two Boro legends - taking the reins of the U18 squad before Alex stepped up to the 1st team. Jorden Gibson has returned to the Club and with Ronnie has continued to put really good work into the U18s. We lost two really good members of staff in Glenn Quirke and Stephen Payne but have replaced Glenn with Amy Ganderton as Academy Operations Manager and are are soon to replace Steve, who was an important part of the jigsaw here at the Academy. Stevenage FC v Forest Green Rovers

At schoolboy level we have just signed no fewer than 10 current U16 players as 1st year scholars next season with a further two players given extended schoolboy offers, while we wait patiently for their physical development. Never before have we produced so many scholars from within the Academy and this is our real win. Eyes are always quite naturally drawn to what people can see now - FA Youth Cup results, League results and scholars making 1st team appearances, however our job is to make sure we do that AND make sure the supply line doesn’t dry up. Signs are we are on the right track and hopefully there is a lot more to come from the Academy.

s the year comes to a close its been hit with some amazing highs and some serious lows...but as most people know, that’s football. In the New Year we have a lot to look forward to and lots of objectives we have set ourselves to hit. We want to avenge last years loss in the County Cup final...we’re in the semi finals so one step at a time getting to the final. We also have an away trip to play Leyton Orient at the Matchroom Stadium which we are all looking forward to and will be a great experience for my players. We’re also in the WNL Plate Quarter final with our opponents yet to be decided. Before all of that we start with an extremely tough away fixture in our first game back after the Year New break against a very good Actonians side, so that will be our main focus when coming back. Lastly I would like to personally thank all our supporters for turning out every week and want to wish everyone involved at Stevenage FC Women a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

LATEST NEWS WELCOME Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New Year to you. How was your day yesterday? I Hope Santa brought you what you wanted. I am delighted to be able to welcome the supporters and fans of Forest Green Rovers to Stevenage this afternoon. The Rovers are having a great season thus far, so I’m sure we’ll all witness a really great game.

ASSET OF COMMUNITY VALUE (ACV) News from the Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) applauds the news that Port Vale’s Vale Park stadium has become the latest in a long list of football grounds to achieve ACV status. As prescribed by the Localism Act (2011), other stadiums listed include Leeds Utd’s Elland Road and Hereford’s Edgar Street.

LISTER HOSPITAL CHILDREN’S WARD As is our long established tradition, the Supporters’ Association facilitated the annual visit of squad players to distribute Christmas presents to all the children in the Bluebell Ward at The Lister Hospital the other week. On Thursday (5th), both children and staff alike were delighted when Mark Sampson and his “little helpers” walked in, accompanied by Boro Bear. A fantastic time was had by all and our thanks go out to Jackie Berners, Jenny Stevenage FC v Forest Green Rovers

Dowden and all the other SA volunteers who sourced, wrapped and organised the event. Seamless as ever, this is one SA activity that I am particularly proud of. Well done all.

two games at the start of December. After a 2-0 home defeat to Scunthorpe, Northampton were onhand to bring more misery to Rovers as Matthew Mills put through his own net on their way to a 1-0 defeat. They also slipped out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 replay defeat at Carlisle after a 2-2 home draw.

STAR MAN… Joseph Mills, who plays at left back, has become the club’s top goalscorer in the league with five. The 30-year-old has become a vital player with his goals that included a 93rd minute winner away at Bradford City in August. Mills started his career at Southampton, for whom he played just over 25 games in the Championship and League One. He has gone on to play for Scunthorpe,

Doncaster, Reading, Oldham and Perth Glory; and is now into his second season at Forest Green.

MARK COOPER

THE GAFFER… Mark Cooper was appointed manager after taking over from caretaker boss Scott Bartlett in 2016, after their defeat to Grimsby in the National League play-off final. Cooper has gone on to be a huge success going one better than Bartlett the following year, victorious in a 3-1 win against Tranmere Rovers in 2017. The former midfielder did play for Forest Green in 2001/02, in which he was made club captain for the season and won Supporters’ Player of the Season. The 50-year-old played for many clubs, such as Birmingham City, Fulham, Exeter City and Leyton Orient, before finishing his career at Kettering Town. by Taylor Catton Stevenage FC v Forest Green Rovers
