THE MANAGER STEVE EVANS
Firstly, I would like to welcome everyone from Gillingham to today’s Sky Bet League Two game at The Lamex Stadium
Since I joined the football club back on the 16th of March last year, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time.
I would like to thank everyone for their continued support. It makes such a difference when everyone pulls in the same direction.
Games at this time of the year always come thick and fast, but with us being re-scheduled due to the TV with Leyton Orient and Aston Villa it is no more than a normal busy week in September or October. The lads are really fit and our recovery will be straightforward for Gillingham.
Gillingham have good players, a good
manager in Neil Harris and simply brilliant supporters. We will face a stern task. Every point has to be earned and tomorrow will be no different.
Young Saxon Earley arrived as a boy and leaves as a man. He is fully deserving of a move to a club flying at the top of League One. Saxon goes with our best wishes and I would love to see him progress just like Ben White (Arsenal), Ivan Toney (Brentford), Kalvin Phillips (Manchester City) and Siriki Dembele (Bournemouth) all have.
The New Year of 2023 brings lots of dreams and objectives. All my family that are here today to be with us in 2024 is my main wish. On a football level we have to remain focused and work hard. As always get behind the lads, they are working so hard for you.
Stevenage’s only victory against Gillingham in the Football League so far did come at home, winning 3-1 in February 2014.
Gillingham are unbeaten in four of their previous five Football League encounters with Stevenage (W2 D2), although both those victories came at Priestfield Stadium.

FROM THE ARCHIVES
Stevenage hosted League One side, Gillingham in the first round of the then ‘Johnstone’s Paint Trophy’. Boro’ went into the clash as the underdogs as they were now in League Two following a last placed finish in League One the season prior.
One of the new names on the team sheet for the game was goalkeeper Chris Day. Day did make an impact, but it perhaps wouldn’t have been the one his manager and himself would have expected. Just over fifteen minutes in, Gillingham attacker, Cody McDonald was taken down in the box as the keeper rushed out to meet the
ball; causing the referee, Darren Deadman, to book the ‘keeper and point to the spot. Luke Norris, yes he of this parish, stepped up to fire the penalty in! Stevenage’s efforts didn’t fade away in the second half as Connor Calcutt scored, only for the linesman’s’ flag to be raised, causing the Boro’ strikers’ goal to be ruled out, and hopes of a cup run to start slipping.
Boro were thrown a lifeline when Gavin Hoyte who was sent off for a poor challenge on Roarie Deacon, but the Norris penalty was enough for ‘The Gills’ to progress. Indeed they almost went all the way as they reached the Southern final where they were beaten by the eventual winners, Bristol City.

HISTORY
STEVENAGE FC V GILLINGHAM FCON THIS DAY: 02 JANUARY
At this festive time of year, it’s not unusual to see Boro’ in action on New Year’s Day – well, if the previous night’s celebrations haven’t been too harsh on the morning-after senses. But, equally, it turns out that it’s not all that uncommon for us to have game time on the second day of the new calendar year either. It’s happened 11 times already.
To start with, our fortunes on this day were flawless. Four wins from four – including hefty wins at home to Heybridge Swifts (1989) and away to Royston Town (1991). Before that, we’d settled for single-goal victories indoors against both Eynesbury Rovers (1982) and Ampthill Town (1984) respectively. After our fifth outing on 2 January returned a point on the road at Bognor Regis Town, Boro’ then had to wait 12 years for another fixture on this date. It was a meaty encounter too; us looking to repeat our Boxing Day home triumph over Barnet – and reel the Bees in at the top of the table. In front of the Sky cameras, however, Andy Woodman’s late fumble proved costly. And so we recorded our first defeat on this date in the diary. Our 3-1 home win over Cambridge United a year later was our most recent non-league match played on this date. And it was also the last time we’d taste success on 2 January for another 15 years. Two fixtures against Leyton
1982 Stevenage Borough 1-0
Eynesbury Rovers , United Counties League Premier Division (Dance)
1984 Stevenage Borough 1-0 Ampthill Town, United Counties League Premier Division (R Marshall)
1989 Stevenage Borough 3-0 Heybridge Swifts , Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North (Gittings, Williams, Roberts)
1991 Royston Town 0-4 Stevenage Borough, Southern Combinations Cup (S Marshall 2, Laffar, Luque)
1993 Bognor Regis Town 1-1
Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Premier Division (S Marshall)
2005 Barnet 2-1 Stevenage Borough , Nationwide Conference (Weatherstone)
2006 Stevenage Borough 3-1 Cambridge United , Nationwide Conference (Nurse, Louis, Boyd)
2012 Stevenage 0-1 Leyton Orient , npower League One
2016 Stevenage 2-2 Leyton Orient , Sky Bet League Two (Gnanduillet 2)
2017 Doncaster Rovers 1-0 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two
2021 Stevenage 3-1 Scunthorpe United , Sky Bet League Two (Carter 2, Oteh)
Orient and a trip to Doncaster failed to yield three points.
In the end, it’d be another 3-1 home win (vs Scunthorpe United) that got us back on track. Let’s keep it that way today.
IT’S GILLINGHAM AGAIN…
It’s almost 12 years to the day since we first met the Gills in a competitive match; our New Year’s Day trip to Priestfield in 2011 ending in a narrow defeat. Since then, we’ve done an awfully good job of avoiding each other. And our visitors today have done a pretty decent job of frustrating us in our seven previous meetings. Mind you, two draws and three defeats isn’t a horrendous record when you consider that we have two victories to our name. If we manage to win here today, well, that brings us level on three wins apiece. But for a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy First Round clash in September 2014, the Gills don’t find this an easy place to come to either.
MAGIC MOMENT: 07 November 2015 – FA Cup R1
Teddy Sheringham’s Boro’ were assured of a place in Round Two when Armand Gnanduillet scored in stoppage time at the end of the game. Not that we did much with our FA Cup run after that. Yeovil Town beat us 1-0 at Huish Park weeks later – and that fine performance against the Kent side proved to be all for nothing.
ON BOTH SIDES…
One of the two wins to our name against the Gills got our 2015-6 FA Cup run off to a fine start. And you can consider it a bit of an upset too; a struggling Boro’ ranked 42 places below our then-League One opposition. In fact, the Gills were riding high in the third tier at the time. So, the final score really does make you sit up and take notice.
Steven Schumacher set us on our way early doors; driving home after a decent corner routine before we’d even played a quarter of an hour. Chris Whelpdale doubled our advantage when he headed in from a Dean Parrett cross just before the half-hour mark. But for one or two hairy moments, we rarely looked troubled.
A few names come to mind when you think about the men who have been employed by Stevenage and Gillingham. So, let’s start with the managers – shall we? In our dugout today is a chap who, not so long ago, would’ve been in the visiting dugout instead. That’s Steve Evans for anyone who wasn’t sure. Moving in the opposite direction, meanwhile, there was Mark Stimson back in the day; Stimmo quitting Boro’ for the Gills in autumn 2007. Stimmo’s acrimonious split from us then pre-empted a mini-exodus of players who wanted to reunite with their former gaffer in the Football League. Barry Fuller, John Nutter, Adam Miller, Stuart Lewis, and Alan Julian all ended up down at Priestfield in either the January or summer 2008 transfer window. It’s not all been one way, however. We have two current stars –Luke Norris and Elliott List – to demonstrate that in the first instance. Robin Trott, Luke Freeman, and (er) Junior Lewis are also among the players to end up at Boro’ after they had been on the books at the Gills. Other chaps to have played for both sides regardless of which came first? Take your pick from Leo Fortune-West, Efetobore Sodje, Dean Parrett, Patrick Agyemang, and Joe Martin among several others.

Good afternoon and welcome to today’s first game of 2023. It’s mad when you say that, 2023! It also marks my 10 years at the football club. I joined in January 2013 and time certainly flies when you have fun!
I have been fortunate to see the good, bad and ugly side of football. There is no doubt that the good certainly outweighs the others. I have served this club in several different capacities; Head of Education, First team coach, Youth Development Phase Lead, U18’s Lead coach and now am the proud Academy Manager. I really enjoy working here and at times it doesn’t always feel like a job and that’s often down to the people I get to engage with daily. The Club and Academy has some excellent staff members and some talented players and there is no doubt in my mind we are one of the strongest Category 3 clubs in the country, our facilities, coaches and provision are all up there with some of the best.
This January sees Ronnie Henry, former club captain, take the reign as Interim Professional Development Phase Lead Coach until the end of the season. This will see Nick Mountford our U16’s Lead step up in supporting Ronnie. Tom Malins our Elite Development Lead will also move from our U15’s to U16 Lead coach. Kush Patel a sports therapist will come in
to support Matt Barnaby and Phil Samuel to strengthen our physical department. This creates a stronger medical and physical provision for our players and this move means players get extra support when recovering from injury or requiring additional physical improvements.
On the playing side, Owen Cochrane joined Step 3 Potters Bar and has done really well, whilst Theo Alexandrou has joined Step 4 title contenders Ware FC for a initial one month loan. We expect there to be further news on players going out throughout January. The players stayed fit over the Christmas period with Phil Samuel setting a rigorous programme as well and bringing them in for two days for some additional physical training. Its often a period of rest for academy players and staff but with an intense January and our U18’s currently in good form the decision made perfect sense to keep them going. After all, if they want to be professional footballers they need to understand that this period is intense! And in all fairness to the players, they trained very well.
Keep an eye out on our twitter page for up and coming fixtures and academy updates: @stevenageyouth Enjoy the game and let’s hope 2023 is a good year for us all.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL?
I don’t know really, Football is quite a big part of my life – I’m quite artistic I guess, I used to do a lot of drawing, but otherwise just family, friends and enjoying myself really.
DID YOU DRIVE INTO TRAINING AND IF SO WHAT MUSIC DID YOU PLAY?
Drove today and I listened to the radio because its not that long! Its too much effort to put the music on my phone! If I were to though, I like a bit of upbeat music, probably chart stuff – Billie Eilish and Justin Bieber!
WE’RE GOING FOR DINNER –WHAT ARE YOU HAVING?
I eat a lot of pasta and rice to be honest. Chicken and things like that, I’m quite healthy in that sense, but I would probably go to a Chinese or a Thai!
WHAT DRINKS ARE YOU ORDERING?
What type we talking?
I don’t like fizzy that much, so I’d rather a still unless I’m on the party – don’t like fizzy that much!
WHEN YOU GET HOME, WHAT’S GOING ON THE TELLY?
Just finished Stranger Things which was really good and I also just watched a series on Apple TV called Black Bird. It’s about prison and stuff, but I don’t really watch the normal TV live it’s more like series and that.
BEST PLACE YOU HAVE BEEN ON HOLIDAY AND THE PLACE YOU WOULD MOST LIKE TO GO TO?
Best place? I’ve been quite fortunate that my mum’s brother (uncle) and his family live in Canada, so I have probably been there more times than I can count. Montreal, Niagara Falls and things – I have done all that quite a few times. I would like to go to Vegas at some point in my

BEST POSITION ON THE PITCH?
In my opinion – Striker!
WHAT IS YOUR JOB?
I work for an electronics company so we source electronics!
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO GET TO TRAINING? 10 minutes!

The roles come with a unique CPD package, with coaches receiving access to training and development from the Premier League, English Football League (EFL), Stevenage FC Academy, Hertfordshire FA, Herts Sports Partnership and more.
In addition to Community Coache vacancies, we also have opportunities for young aspiring coaches to join our team in partnership with Sporting Futures Training to undertake a 14-month Community Sport Activator apprenticeship.
The role will provide support to the Foundation Community Coaches, as well as undertaking central training with Sporting Futures Training in Stevenage with other apprentices to deliver a variety of sport events for local schools.

Welcome to The Lamex, and welcome to 2023. This year brings much anticipation and opportunity for the Foundation under the backdrop of the incredible effort being made by both the men’s and women’s team on the pitch.
Additionally, we’ll be heading to Villa Park on Sunday for a huge FA Cup tie and another opportunity to show how far the Club has come in recent years.
First up, I wanted to thank everyone that donated to the Toyshed appeal before Christmas that saw 111 toys donated, and also featured on Sky before the game against Leyton Orient.
In the coming weeks, we’ll have a number of announcements about new partnerships and funding we were able to secure at the end of 2022, that will
give the Foundation team even more resource to continue in our mission to provide an active, healthy, positive life for everyone in our local community.
As the January transfer window starts, we will be looking to make some signings of our own and are currently recruiting for new staff to join our team to help deliver these new projects and the growth we are seeing across our work. Case in point is our schools work which will see the team delivering over 50 after-school clubs per week from next Monday, with nearly 600 children taking part!
These children join our Boro Family and as well as getting them active and encouraging a healthy lifestyle, we hope to see them alongside our established fans at The Lamex before the end of the season.
Enjoy the game and COYB!

FORM GUIDE
The Gills come to The Lamex tonight in rock bottom place in the League Two table after a poor first half to the season.
Indeed with their failure to beat Sutton on Thursday, they have gone 10 league games on the bounce without a victory since their 1-0 success at home to Sutton on October 1. It’s all a far cry from the form expected of the side which was seen among those likely to return straight away to League One. Ironically they have enjoyed good cup runs, their EFL Cup adventure coming to an end just before Christmas with a creditable 2-0 reverse at Wolves, while a 3-2 replay win over Dagenham & Redbridge means they entertain Premier League side Leicester in the FA Cup third round. The writing was on the wall from the very start as Gillingham drew four and lost four in their first nine games with just one victory.
LAST 5 SEASONS
MEET THE BOSS:
Neil Harris joined the Gills as first-team manager on January 31, 2022, agreeing a two-and-a-half year contract at MEMS Priestfield Stadium.
He replaced Steve Evans, who departed a few weeks prior following the Gills 4-0 defeat to Ipswich. Steve Lovell had since been in charge in a caretaker capacity. He had previously been in charge of Millwall and Cardiff City, winning promotion to the Championship with the Lions via the play-offs in 2017. His playing career began with Cambridge City before arriving at the Den for his first playing spell in 1998. He scored 98 times in 270 appearances before signing for Nottingham Forest in December 2004, via a short loan spell with Cardiff.
Harris returned to Millwall for a second playing spell in January of 2007 and after scoring a further 40 goals, he
became the club’s all-time record goalscorer. An 18-month spell with local club Southend followed, before finishing his career with Wrexham. He retired in June of 2013 after failing to get over a knee injury.
ONE TO WATCH:
Shaun Williams signed for the Gills on 10 June 2022, the second time he had played for manager Neil Harris, having previously played for him at Millwall.
On 27 January 2014, Williams signed at The Den on a 2.5 year contract for an undisclosed fee. During his time at the Den he accumulated 290 appearances in all competitions, scoring 22 goals. Born near Dublin his career began in Ireland with spells at Drogheda, Dundalk, Finn Harps and Sporting Fingal before a move to MK Dons in 2011.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION LATEST NEWS
WELCOME
DID YOU KNOW that the day Paul Scally took control of the club, the Gillingham Independent Supporters Club (GISC) stumped up over £5000 to Stevenage for Leo Fortune-West. Leo went onto be top scorer for Gillingham as they gained promotion to Division Two in the 1995-96 season. So, a big warm New Year Boro welcome to the fans and supporters of Gillingham. I have a number of good friends in the GISC, who routinely attend the national Football Supporters’ Association meetings. They’re great company and I hope to catch up with some of them this afternoon.
DELVIN STEVENS
Some of you reading this will remember the Club’s tribute to the former Boro star Delvin Stevens, who passed on last June.
The first home game of the New Year has always been the tradition in the Stevens household for the entire family to come watch Stevenage. Delvin’s daughter, Lucy, is ensuring that that this tradition continues – in the memory of her dad.
Since joining Stevenage Town in 1964, Delvin always maintained a connection with the club - which included Athletic and Borough. Born and bred in Knebworth, Delvin knew everyone involved in local football. He was even involved in the famous “Twin Foxes” pub team when it reached the pinnacle of its standard back in the 1980’s. Name a Stevenage Borough player who wasn’t involved with the Twin Foxes at that time would be easier to cite than those who weren’t!
I got to know Delvin about forty years ago. He was the best friend of my brother-inlaw, Pat Plant and the social venue of note
was the Knebworth Cricket Club. The topic of discussions held there were the stuff of legend!
Never let it be forgotten that as the gaffer of the Boro Youth team set-up, Delvin won both the East Anglia Trophy and the Herts County Cup. Moreover, during our disappointing 1987-88 season, it was Delvin who took over the reigns when Frank Cornwell stepped down as manager. Delvin’s achievements at this time were wholly credible delivering three wins in his first three games and concluding his brief term with four wins and two draws from eight games. I could (literally) go on and on about Delvin – but I’ll leave that for another time.
Lucy, I know that you’ll be in the crowd here this afternoon, so on behalf of the club, can I wish you and your family all the very best for the new year, and to know that Delvin will never be forgotten here.

‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME’
To mark the new season, we want to make you aware of new measures being taken across all of football to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience. We are supporting strong action from the FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle anti-social and criminal behaviours that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of the risks to fans and staff – pyros can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius and cause lifechanging injuries, while entering the pitch endangers players, managers and match officials.
We know those who commit these illegal acts do not represent the majority of supporters.
