STEVE EVANS
All by“Come & help us become a League One club - we can only do that if everyone is pulling together!”
PHIL WALLACE
Good afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Harrogate Town.
It’s been a while since I penned any programme notes and going forwards, I intend to see this page shared with articles and views from other key members of our Club from time to time.
Obviously, winning on Tuesday night brought back that winning mentality to the Group and it’s important that confidence is carried into the game on Saturday. It’s been great to be back around the top of the table and it seems a long, long time since we were in this position. Steve has put together a strong, robust group of experienced talent and moulded them into one unit. It’s particularly impressive when you see the camaraderie between the lads vying for a shirt. The fact is Steve could pick any team from the 21 senior players we have and compete in League Two and it’s been some years since we’ve had that. Actually, I’m not sure we’ve ever had that before… One of the lads not available to Steve is Elliot List, who is due to have his operation on Saturday. Obviously, he won’t be available to us again until well into next year, but he’s a strong lad, both physically and mentally and he’ll be back just as soon as he can.
We continue to improve every aspect of our Club and now that we’ve completed the North Stand, we’ve turned back to our training grounds at Bragbury End and Shephalbury, with investments in equipment, storage and pitch quality to help move us forwards. On the staff support side, we’ve changed a lot as well. Chris Ross coming in as our new COO is doing a great job, we’ve got a new Safety Officer in Liam Warren and new folks in accounting and secretarial positions. Sometimes it’s great to refresh, with new staff bringing new ideas and a fresh approach.
Financially we’re in good shape too. We’ve increased the budget significantly this year to get the quality of players Steve wanted and so far, it’s paying off. We need a little bit of luck in the cup games ahead of us, but we won’t be distracted from our aim of increasing attendances and promotion to League One. You can all play your part in increasing attendances by spreading the word if you like what you see. Let’s get The Lamex rocking again! Whether you’re playing or watching, enjoy the match.

MATCHDAY MASCOTS
We offer a warm welcome this afternoon to our two mascots hoping to bring Boro even more good luck as we look to extend our brilliant home form.
Firstly we welcome Isabella GannonLewis who lives in Stevenage and attends Marriotts School. Isabella is 11 and lists playing football for Bedwell Rangers, street dance, shopping and gymnastics among her hobbies. Her favourite Boro player is Jake Reeves.
We are also delighted to welcome Scarlett Clark to Boro today for a really big occasion as today is her seventh birthday!!! Happy birthday Scarlett!!!! Scarlett lives in Cambridgeshire and lists Lego, reading and drawing among her hobbies. Her favourite player is Terence Vancooten and after scoring his first ever Boro goal on Tuesday, don’t be surprised if he bags another for Scarlett today!
Best wishes to Isabella and Scarlett for a great time with us this afternoon and here’s to another Boro win.
ARCHIVES
Stevenage hosted Barnet in the Conference with the home side winless in their last five. Indeed with their last victory being on the 31st of August, away to Morecambe, it had been six games since Boro’ had won at Broadhall Way.
The first half ended goalless, and the second period started in similar fashion. Boro manager Wayne Turner looked towards his bench to try and shake up the game as Jean-Michel Sigere came on to replace fellow frontman, Kirk Jackson, in the 67th minute.
Everything following Sigere’s entrance was action-packed as minutes later Barnet were awarded a penalty, which Junior Agogo made no mistake in converting.
The Bees then doubled their lead on 77 minutes via Ben Strevens. The game looked to be beyond Stevenage’s grasp but a penalty minutes after Barnet’s second gave the home fans a glimmer of hope. Defender, Jason Goodliffe ensured Boro’ took their chance to reduce Barnet’s lead and made it a nervy final nine minutes for the Bees.

Javed Latif is a North Stand and away game regular, and rarely misses a game. He can also regularly be seen (and heard!) having pre-match banter with the playing squad!
FIRST GAME? YEAR, SEASON?
During the 1999-2000, Nationwide Conference cup. Stevenage Borough V Forest Green Rovers.
WHICH SECTION OF THE GROUND DO YOU NORMALLY WATCH THE MATCHES FROM?
Currently enjoying the games from the raised platform designated to the wheelchair users in the North Stand.
BEST MEMORY/MEMORIES OF SUPPORTING BORO?
The 2011-2012 season when we got promoted to League One.
Favourite all-time player (and why)
There has been a few but I am going to go for someone from recent time, it has to be none other than Luke Norris, not only
because he is a local lad, but his quality and physical presence is something to enjoy and admire.
FAVOURITE CURRENT PLAYER (AND WHY)?
Luke Norris. He has single handedly carried the whole weight of the team last year, was the highest scorer and scored some massive goals including a screamer against Leyton Orient.
WHY DO YOU LOVE BORO?
Boro is like the second family and since the commitment shown by the club towards the local community during the Covid time the club has become even more important to me, my family and to many others living locally.
FAVOURITE BORO SHIRT?
I have seen many colours representing the club over the years but in recent years the Burger King shirt has won me over. It was an excellent marketing ploy by the electronic game developers that allowed us to see big names like Ronaldo, Messi etc wearing Boro shirts and taking the field. This particular shirt turned Boro into a household name around the world.
Thanks for your ongoing support, Javed! As always, it is appreciated.
This afternoon we welcome a group of supporters from the US. Matt Neal, Paul Gartlan and Luke Barks form the Stevenage Brigade who kindly sponsor the playing kits of Jake Reeves and Jake Taylor. In total seven of them have ventured across to the UK on a business trip but unfortunately Paul Gartlan stayed at home with his new wife, Mary. Another member of the group, Clare Polega is celebrating her birthday so happy birthday Clare.
ON THIS DAY: 24 SEPTEMBER
It might only be a recent trend – but three straight defeats on 24 September means we have some wrongs to put right today. Exeter City were the last team to visit these parts on this date in history; Darren Sarll’s men sliding to a two-goal defeat that day. Before that, a Peter Murphy header gave Carlisle United a slender victory over us in 2011 –and, yes, it was the same Peter Murphy who scored a header against us in the 2005 playoff final.
Talking of 2005, the ref on duty as Morecambe hammered us 4-1 on 24 September 2005 was a D. Cummings. Surely not?
Anyway, it’s not all doom and gloom on this date. Gitts did more than you’d expect any other reasonable striker to do back in 1988; scoring FOUR times and still not ending up on the winning side as Tring Town claimed a point. S&L Corby and Saffron Walden Town were also duly despatched on this date over the years. But you have to go back to 1996 and a 1-0 win at Rushden & Diamonds for the last time we were on the winning side of the coin on 24 September.
IT’S HARROGATE TOWN AGAIN…
Our head-to-head record against Harrogate Town is still very much in its infancy. It’s only two years ago since the North Yorkshire side secured promotion
1983 Stevenage Borough 2-1 S&L Corby, United Counties League Premier Division (Cox, Lear)
1985 Saffron Walden Town 0-1 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division 2 North (Pirie)
1988 Stevenage Borough 4-4 Tring Town, Vauxhall Opel League Division 2 North (Gittings 4)
1994 Stevenage Borough 0-2 Cambridge City, FA Cup R2Q
STEVENAGE FC V HARROGATE TOWN HISTORY1996 Rushden & Diamonds 0-1 Stevenage Borough, GM Vauxhall Conference (Ugbah)
2005 Morecambe 4-1 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Nurse)
2011 Carlisle United 1-0 Stevenage, npower League One
2016 Stevenage 0-2 Exeter City, Sky Bet League Two
to the Football League for the first time in their history. With that great achievement came the first-ever meeting between our two teams in October 2020 – and we’ve had three more of them since. The good news is that we’ve made an assertive start to proceedings against Town; two wins and two draws the current return. Both victories came at home. Both involved us scoring three goals. Can we make it happen for a third time?
MAGIC MOMENT:
Sky Bet League Two – 29 January 2022
ON BOTH SIDES…
In the context of our ongoing struggles at the wrong end of the table, Boro’ actually started 2022 in fine fettle – after a New Year’s Day defeat at Forest Green, of course. By the time Harrogate Town came to the Lamex on the last weekend of January, we were unbeaten in four. The question was whether we could stretch that run to a fifth.
The short answer is “yes”. Jake Reeves scored early to set us on our way against our visitors; Luke Norris then adding a second midway through the first half. Zain Westbrooke nearly bagged a third just before the interval by charging down a Josh Falkingham clearance. But it wasn’t until the final 10 minutes when Jake Taylor completed a comprehensive win. It moved us up to the dizzying heights of 17th – but was the last time we’d win until 9 April!
By Pete Hayman courtesy of boroguide.co.ukOur two clubs operated in very different circles during our respective paths to the Football League. On or off the pitch, our paths wouldn’t collide in earnest until we were both competing at the same level. And that is reflected in a dearth of players who have turned out for both sides.
In many cases, the direction of travel for those who represented both tends to be Stevenage first and Harrogate after that. It was the course charted by the likes of Kirk Jackson, Michael Brough, Kevin Lokko, and Luke Foster.
In rare instances, the reverse is true. Danny Johnson and Clint Marcelle were both on Town’s books before they ended up at Boro’. More recently, we have the curious case of Joe Leesley – a winger who was loaned up a division to us. We were “battling” against the drop from League Two in 2019-20, while Town were chasing down that historic promotion.
ACADEMY
Good afternoon and welcome to today’s fixture. The best of luck as always to the gaffer and his team.
I was delighted to be confirmed as the Academy Manager. I am honoured to have been given this role and thoroughly looking forward to. With the continued support of Ieuan Lewis and phase leads Chris Agutter, Ronnie Henry, Tom Farr, and Tom Malins as well as various other staff members I believe we are going to have an enjoyable season!
Our new Youth Development Phase lead, Paul Dale has settled in well and already started work on the grass with Chris and Ronnie. Although lead phase roles include a lot of admin work now, we want to ensure our coaches do what they do best and coach even more. So to see all our coaches incorporated with Agi and Ron in the U18s training can only be positive for everyone and our environment.
We have also appointed a new Head of Academy of Academy Goalkeeping, Louis Hrebeniak. Louis starts today. Louis joins from Cambridge United and is an enthusiastic goalkeeping coach who we believe will add value to the department. Grace Brooks has replaced the vacant position of my previous role and will support me with the operational
running of the academy. Our staffing department is now complete and very strong and along with various new additions in the part time age groups, I am hopeful of continuing our good form and ensure our players get the best opportunities to develop not only as footballers but young people.
I have had some very positive discussions with our chairman on how we will strive to make our academy one of the strongest at our level. Leon Hunter has always been keen on our academy and is always on hand to support any staff member. This shows the unity of the football club from the top. The gaffer has been excellent in providing opportunities for our young players if they deserve it, to go and train with the first team. Over the next few weeks we will begin our U15 East Cup competition which includes clubs like Cambridge, Norwich and Ipswich. These competitions are so valuable for our players as the academy vision for this is ‘learn to win’. The U17s continue in the London Cup as they travel to AFC Wimbledon later in the month.
Have an enjoyable game, make the noise and come on the Boro!!

Stevenage FCW put five goals past Wormley Rovers on Sunday to start this season’s County Cup campaign with aplomb. It was a first home game at the County Ground for the ‘Boro and one that resulted in a fairly comfortable victory, despite some controversy along the way.
It only took seven minutes for Stevenage to take the lead in this contest. Shianne Swarres, a woman who always keeps the ball under her spell, is no stranger to a long distance effort. However, even she would have been surprised to see her early long distance shot nestle into the net after bouncing in front of a diving goalkeeper and back up into the net and over the stranded stopper.
‘Boro thought they had doubled their advantage midway through the half. After a commotion in the box with the ball pinging around, the linesman raised his flag for offside. The referee however, saw something that very few else did and awarded a penalty. Despite protests from the away bench the penalty stood and Holly Greenwood sent a low shot to the ‘keeper’s left and into the net. The joy was short lived as the ball was placed on the centre spot and the referee chose to speak to his linesman. Unusually, he chose to disallow the goal
and restart with a free kick for offside. This motivated both sides, but especially Greenwood. After some neat work with Amy Gooderham, she glided into the box and sent her shot into the same spot as she put her penalty for a tenth career goal for Stevenage.
With five minutes of the half remaining, ‘Boro put the game effectively out of reach. Kelsey Millen, who had perhaps her best game since arriving at the club, saw a missed opportunity land at the feet of Emily Schofield who sent the ball across goal for Becky Shephard to turn home
The second half saw some chances come and go, but both sides were profligate. Half an hour into the half, the score increased. Shephard again stepped up to take a corner and sent it towards the far post. The goalkeeper couldn’t get a hand to it and it evaded Vicky Neal at the far post to land inside the post for another candidate for goal of the season.
Stevenage continued their dominance with Wormley tiring and after Jodie Bellinger’s effort crashed off the bar, the height of Erin Price proved useful as she rose above everyone to nod the ball home for her first goal for ‘Boro in only her second appearance.
Stevenage have reached the last seven finals of this competition. They will be hoping to make it eight with performances such as these.

September is arguably one of the busiest times that you’ll come across at The Lamex, with game after game for both the men’s and women’s first teams, the conclusion of our summer programme including Soccer Camps and NCS, plus the start of a new academic year, and our return to local schools.
The 2022-23 season looks set to be an incredibly busy one, with growth across the organisation and projects in the pipeline to continue our mission of supporting all in our community to live an active, healthy, and positive life. At the beginning of the month, the whole team spent two days at a staff away day discussing these plans, and the impact that they each want to have, both collectively and individually on our community through their work at the Foundation.
One area that has seen significant progress in recent years, is our education-based work. Led by Daryl Smith, who has been with the
Foundation since its inception, and supported by Luke Wilkins, Kirsten Timberlake, Kevin Beckles, and Lucy Burdin, a plethora of projects ranging from after-school clubs to traineeships to degrees to curricular based PSHE, numeracy and literacy programmes. This year our after-school programme alone has grown to 48 clubs, engaging with nearly over 600 children each and every week. These sessions are the foundation of the Foundation, offering an opportunity for children to engage in sport for the first time, providing a platform for the more experienced to be identified for our talent pathway in the Club Academy, and importantly creating the next generation of Boro fans.
To find out if we are delivering in your child’s school, please visit www.stevenagefcfoundation.com On to this afternoon, all the best to Steve and the squad to continue their fine vein of form! COYB!

After the opening day joy, Harrogate were brought down to earth with a 3-0 defeat at Crewe before they went out of the EFL Cup at home to Stockport. They have also suffered an EFL Trophy reverse as well along with a 4-0 home defeat to Newport at the end of last month which has really rung the alarm bells for Simon Weaver’s men.

Having passed the ten-year milestone in May 2019, Simon Weaver is English football’s longest serving manager in the Football League.
During his time in charge, Weaver has overseen two promotions that have lifted Town from the National League North to the EFL and twice taken his side to Wembley Stadium, most recently to lift the 2019/20 FA Trophy.
In his playing career, Weaver featured for the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Kidderminster and Scarborough as a centre half.

Dooley’s career began in 2010 with Northern Irish side Coleraine before moving to America to play for Loyola Greyhounds. Dooley then returned to Coleraine in 2013 before signing for Derry (2014) and then Cork City in 2016. A third spell with Coleraine came in 2017 and he then joined Rochdale in May 2018.
Dooley would go on to make over 100 appearances for the Dale, featuring as a versatile midfielder for the former League One outfit. The Northern Irishman also represented his country at u17 and u19 level.

WELCOME
A big, Boro, ‘Broadhall Way’ welcome to the officials and players of Harrogate Town this afternoon, and a special welcome to the board of the club’s Supporters’ Trust. Claire Bridge (chair), Maggie Pattison (secretary), Nicola Noble (treasurer) and Terry Tuplin are achieving fantastic things at the EnviroVent Stadium with their supporters. So, from their counterparts here at the Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association we wish them well in their endeavours.
Did you know, that Mike Hennigan was the manager of Harrogate in 2001? He was also club captain here at Stevenage in 1968. The things you learn in this programme!
THE STEVENAGE FC ROYAL CONNECTION
Given the recent passing of our Queen, I thought it poignant to reflect on Her Majesty’s visit to Stevenage in 1959. Wilf Mannion was an inside forward who made over 350 appearances for Middlesbrough. Born and bred in the town in 1918, Wilf went on to score some 110 goals in all competitions during the 18 years he was registered as a player (19361954). He also achieved 26 England caps. After retiring from football, Wilf moved to Stevenage where he became the land lord of the new Pied Piper pub in Oaks Cross. The accompanying photo depicts Wilf with the Queen, who visited the pub in 1959 - the very first pub she’d ever been in, apparently.
Wilf was a vice-president of Stevenage FC and once loaned the club his extensive collection of international caps, medals, shirts and photographs to display at the old London Road ground back in 1958. Known as the “Golden Boy”, Middlesbrough erected a statue of Wilf outside the Riverside Stadium in 2001 to commemorate his passing. In 2004, he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.
INTER-CITY BORO

‘LOVE FOOTBALL. PROTECT THE GAME’
To mark the new season, we want to make you aware of new measures being taken across all of football to ensure everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience. We are supporting strong action from the FA, Premier League and EFL to tackle anti-social and criminal behaviours that put all of us at risk.
This reflects the seriousness of the risks to fans and staff – pyros can burn at 2000 degrees Celsius and cause lifechanging injuries, while entering the pitch endangers players, managers and match officials.
We know those who commit these illegal acts do not represent the majority of supporters.
