e have had a good month and since Christmas I am very happy with the team, the way that they are working and taking messages and playing to plan. We have certainly got some momentum and it gives us a chance now to build on it. It has come from all that hard work and listening to the messages and taking on board what I have been asking of them. They bought into a plan very quickly and it takes a long time to build a way of playing. It does not happen overnight. You do it in stages, and certainly the first part of this was to become highly competitive, try to be in every game we play, whether we are away to Forest Green or at home to a team at the bottom of the table. We want to be in every game and give
ourselves the chance of a result. A hardworking and focused team with a purpose has been the target for me, and we have already shown that we can become that competitive team. Now, we have got to start adding some more quality in certain areas, but you cannot do everything overnight and I am very pleased with what they have done so far. Part of any successful team is that there are more than eleven players and there needs to be a squad mentality. There is a lot of football to be played, and it is about utilising all of our resources in the best way that I see fit. There are some players that will play more than others, but there will be the need for more than just eleven players. I think the players have adapted and been receptive to that, and so far they have had a very good squad mentality.
“WE HAVE ALREADY SHOWN THAT WE CAN BECOME THAT COMPETITIVE TEAM”

We are delighted to welcome two mascots to Boro this afternoon giving us good luck to grab another three points. First up it’s a happy hello to Rhys Allen, 10, who lives in the town. Rhys attends Lodge Farm School and lists football, playing PS4, FIFA 22 and Fortnite among his hobbies. His favourite Boro player is Ben Coker. Oliver Croughton is also a mascot for today. Nine-year-old Oliver lives in Fairfield and lists football, photography, Roblox and swimming among his hobbies. His favourite player is Elliot Osbourne and we hope that both mascots have an enjoyable stay with us this afternoon.

oro made it six league games unbeaten as they climbed away from the relegation scrap at the end of last season in our first ever Football League encounter at The Lamex. It was a victory which dealt a huge blow to the Sulphurites’ own play-off ambitions and did come a little against the run of play. The visitors dominated the first half and

but for a string of Jamie Cumming stops they would have been ahead. But Boro grabbed the lead on 52 minutes when Elliot List made the most of a long punt from Cumming and drilled home. Stung by the strike, Harrogate pushed for an equaliser but Boro held firm and claimed a triumph which put them 12 points clear of the drop zone. DARREN ISTED CLICK BELOW TO CHECK OUT THE PROGRAMME

BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 29 JANUARY It’s the end of January already? The current season will be over before you know it. And then it’ll be Christmas again! How time can fly when you’re starting to have more fun. And today hasn’t been a bad day to be a Boro’ fan down the years either; eight previous outings on 29 January delivering six wins, one draw, and a respectable cup defeat in 2011. It seems apt to start with our last appearance on this date in history - and the aforementioned FA Cup defeat 11 years ago today. It took a team from a higher division to inflict our one defeat on 29 January (to date) and there’s not a load wrong with that. Of course, it’d be a different equation the following season when we exacted revenge on the Royals. Now, we’re still yet to find a date in the calendar on which Martin Gittings hasn’t scored. We won’t rule it out between now and the end of the season. But that’s for another day. Here’s a remarkable feat achieved by Gitts - he’s scored two times on 29 January, with the goals coming a mere nine years apart! The first of those came in 1983 as Boro’ recorded a 2-0 win against a strong Rushden Town side who’d eventually finish the campaign in second. The second was on 29 January 1992; the decisive goal in our Knights Floodlit League clash just up the road at Royston Town. And how times had changed at the Boro’ between those two dates…
14
Gitts isn’t the only striker with a notable achievement to his name on this date. Darryn Stamp bagged a brace on debut today in 2005 as we defeated Farnborough by three goals to one. Stampy hit the ground running with ease, and would go on to score another six times as we made the Nationwide Conference playoffs that season. 1983 Stevenage Borough 2-0 Rushden Town, United Counties League Premier Division (Gittings, Lear) 1985 Stevenage Borough 2-1 Berkhamsted Town, Servowarm League Division Two North (Sperrin, Cox) * 1991 Stansted 1-3 Stevenage Borough, Knights Floodlit League (Marshall 2, Tonge) 1992 Royston Town 0-1 Stevenage Borough, Eastern Floodlit League (Gittings) 1994 Yeading 0-2 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Premier Division (Hobbs, Crawshaw) 2000 Stevenage Borough 1-1 Altrincham, Nationwide Conference (Leadbeater) 2005 Stevenage Borough 3-1 Farnborough, Nationwide Conference (Stamp 2, Bulman) 2011 Stevenage 1-2 Reading, FA Cup R4 (Charles) *BoroGuide is missing the full line-up for this game. YOU AGAIN? HARROGATE TOWN AFC It’s still very early days as far as our record against Harrogate Town AFC is concerned. This is only meeting number four in the Boro’ archives – and each of the three that have gone before have been tight affairs. If you’re the sort of person who looks at our previous record against a club to inform your pre-match optimism, there is something here for you. In three past encounters with Town, we’re yet to concede a goal. That’s
www.stevenagefc.com
right. We’ve so far kept the North Yorkshire side at bay for 270 minutes – and another 90 would be greatly appreciated today. At the EnviroVent Stadium, we’ve drawn a blank ourselves and come home with two goalless draws – one this season and the other, well, last season. In the corresponding fixture here at the Lamex last season, Elliott List scored after the half time interval to decide matters in our favour. So, goals are somewhat at a premium in this fixture and only we’ve managed to do anything about that so far. Can we repeat last season’s tight victory? Will Harrogate Town AFC finally breach our defence? Or will we both rip up the rulebook and turn in a high-scoring, high-octane goalfest? You don’t have long to wait in order to find out what it’s going to be.

ACADEMY
ood afternoon all. Since the last set of programme notes back in August, the workflow from an analysis perspective has progressed in order to enhance and impact everyone within the academy, from U9’s through to U18’s. We now have a development plan in place for Coach Analysis, to increase the quality of coaching we provide to the athletes as well. From an U18s perspective, the scholars have been working tremendously hard off the field with their SEP (Sporting Excellence Professional) work, where individuals have to analyse and clip their own training and match performances. We now have 3 Second Year Scholars in a position to complete the course early. Since the arrival of Chris Agutter, there has been a big emphasis placed on individual/ unit and team meetings to provide the Scholars with as much detailed analysis as possible to develop all aspects of their game. From a schoolboy perspective, we are now in a position to record all 3 home fixtures, something we’ve not previously been able to do. This allows us to get more footage of the players.
With the use of Hudl, all schoolboy age groups are now maximising the use of footage provided and showcasing some excellent work off the field, with the use of reflection and analysis of their individual performances. A big thanks to the Phase Leads and all Lead Coaches in encouraging and supporting the players. STEVE BARKER - Head of Academy Analysis

WOMEN David Per ry
Stevenage FCW Assistant Manager Dave, the girls were in the gym over the Christmas holidays, what were they working on? It depends, we try to make it as individualised as possible; some of the girls haven’t spent as much time in a gym – some of them are a bit more experienced, so it was about refining technique. It was about getting them moving and then we had them out over in the park, so fair play to the girls for turning up! It has been a good start to the year with our place in the Hertfordshire County Cup final secured, how would you sum up our semi-final win? It was a dominant performance and a good lead into our league games coming up, so pretty happy. You’re happy to win a cup game whether it’s 1-0 or 6-0, you’ve just got to get through so very good. For all our dominance, it did take us a while to get on the scoresheet, does it concern you that we need to be more clinical in front of goal? No, I’ve always worked on the theory that if you create chances – I’d be more
concerned if we weren’t creating chances – but we’re creating the chances, so if we keep creating them we will score goals. We scored six with five different scorers. What does it mean to the coaching staff to reach the final? It’s a good achievement to reach the final, obviously once we’re there we’ve got to win it. There’s no point just making the final, once you get there you want to win it. The girls deserve it for all the hard work that they put in, especially over Christmas when they were in working. With results showing more consistency, what do you feel that you have been getting out of this squad in recent months? There’s a lot of drive and determination there, which is good. We’re getting a few injured players back that earlier in the season we didn’t have, which makes a big difference especially with their experience. We’re starting to build relationships within the team, especially across the back and through midfield, which makes life easier for the players themselves and we’ve now got competition for places.

CLICK HERE FOR THE COMPLETE SQUAD LIST A lack of consistency has marked the current season for the Sulphurites who sit in 11th place, just five points ahead of Boro and off the play off pace. The season started well, with just one defeat in 11 in all competitions, although included in that were just four wins in

the league. Harrogate stuttered in October when defeats to Bristol Rovers, Hartlepool and Colchester and a draw at home to Tranmere halted their challenge for the top half. Since then it has been a real mixed bag with runs of wins and defeats and a 4-0 FA Cup exit to Luton, indeed their last league draw came back in November at Swindon, so expect a result today!
DID YOU KNOW? •H arrogate are no strangers to disruption, founded in 1914, they actually waited five years to play their first competitive fixture on August 30, 1919, due to WW1. • Harrogate AFC have gone into the history books as FA Trophy winners, even though their 3-1 success over Concord Rangers in the final of the 2019-20 competition actually took place on May 3, 2021 due to the pandemic. • Harrogate’s win in the FA Trophy means they are technically the first Football League team to play in the competition for non-league sides.
Stevenage FC v Harrogate Town AFC
ONE TO WATCH Striker Jack Muldoon joined Town in June 2018 having proved a success at former clubs AFC Fylde and Lincoln City, winning promotion to the Football League with The Imps and scoring The Coasters Goal of the Season against Macclesfield during 2017/18. Muldoon has finished as top scorer in each of his three seasons at the club and holds the honour of scoring their first EFL goal away at Southend and first EFL goal in Harrogate against Barrow. He netted a hat-trick on Saturday in the 3-0 win at home to Oldham.
THE BOSS Simon Weaver, having passed the 10year milestone in May 2019, is English football’s longest serving manager in the top five tiers. During his time in charge, Weaver has overseen promotions that have lifted Town from the National League North to the EFL and twice taken his side to Wembley Stadium, most recently to lift the 2019/20 FA Trophy. After featuring for the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Kidderminster and Scarborough in his days as a centre half, Weaver now has Town looking to reach the Football League Division One for the first time.

ANDREW JENNINGS (1943-2022) Andrew Jennings passed away earlier this month. Andrew was an investigative journalist who specialised in football corruption. Malcolm Clarke (chair of the FSA) paid tribute, citing that: “His book and Panorama programmes on FIFA led the way in exposing malpractice in football’s governing body, which he pursued indefatigably.” I had the pleasure of meeting Andrew, many years ago. He was a good man. As football supporters’, we all owe Andrew a debt of gratitude for what he had achieved.
