ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Harrogate Town. This is the first time our visitors have visited The Lamex I believe. They had a brilliant season last year and thoroughly deserved their promotion and cup exploits. It’s always good to see up and coming clubs – we were in the same position back in 2010 and I feel we’ve grown so much since then. The warm feeling one gets when things are going right was violently shaken at the start of this week when the news of Glenn Roeder’s passing reached us. I brought Glenn in to mentor Darren Sarll and he did exactly as he said he would by providing us all with the benefit of his experience, as well as making us all chuckle with his stories. And did Glenn have stories!! A man of integrity and exceptional football knowledge, we all learnt something from him and we’ll all miss him greatly. The dismantling of Forest Green on Tuesday night and the comfortable 3-0 win is a good example of the path we are on now. It’s not an amazing path where we’re beating everyone in sight. It’s a path of progress, building on the qualities we have in management and the players we’ve recruited under very difficult circumstances. So it’s no surprise that we’re in the top 10 of the last 6 game form table and
www.stevenagefc.com
that we’ve been steadily improving by securing wins. What we need to do now is make sure we keep that momentum going, especially when we play teams in the bottom half of the table. We are building and we will keep building until we start to achieve success. Off the field, we are preparing to get back to normal. It’s extremely difficult trying to keep the wolf from the door, when you have virtually no income, but we are getting by week to week. However the train will run off the tracks in a couple of months when every avenue of cost saving is closed, but we still have to pay players and staff through the Summer. Normally, season ticket income allows us to get through the Summer months, but I wonder how fans will react to buying season tickets for next season, not just at our Club but at every Club in the EFL and NL. We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but whilst I’m delighted to see some light at the end of the Covid tunnel, I’m not sure what the solutions are financially to clubs at our level. No doubt time will tell. We’ll keep on doing the right thing – we’ve had great support from so many and our efforts to help others in the community are still at the top of the list, along with creating a sustainable Club for generations to come. Enjoy the game!

IN TRIBUTE
GLENN ROEDER
S
tevenage Football Club was extremely saddened to hear the news of Glenn Roeder’s passing last weekend, at the age of 65. Roeder enjoyed an accomplished career as a defender at the likes of Leyton Orient, Queens Park Rangers, Newcastle United and Watford, where he is still revered to this day. In 1992 Roeder started his managerial career as player-manager at Gillingham, before taking the reins at his former club Watford. After coaching roles at Burnley and England, Roeder took charge of West Ham in the Premier League in 2001, but suffered a brain tumour just two years later, something he would battle with for over 18 years before it eventually, tragically, led to his death last Sunday. Despite the medical set-back, Roeder returned to the dugout for the Hammers just a few months later and would go on to manage Newcastle United, where he won the UEFA Intertoto Cup – the club’s first trophy in nearly 40 years – and Norwich City, his final job as a manager. Following a brief spell at Sheffield Wednesday as managerial advisor in 2015, Roeder joined Stevenage in March 2016 to work alongside then manager, Darren Sarll. The pair formed what looked like an
www.stevenagefc.com
unlikely pairing, but after joining on what was initially an end-to-the-season contract, Roeder signed a new deal and the pair enjoyed a fruitful relationship for two years, as they helped guide Stevenage clear of relegation trouble in 2015/16 and a 10th place finish in 2016/17 before the two parted ways with the club in March 2018. At Stevenage, Glenn will always be remembered as a kind man, who was full of charisma, stories and plenty of jokes. His knowledge and experience no doubt helped many, as tributes poured in from current and former Stevenage players during the week.
A minute’s silence was observed and black armbands were worn in Tuesday’s home game against Forest Green Rovers, and the Club would like to pass on its condolences to Glenn’s family, friends and the wider footballing community as we join them to pay tribute to a truly unforgettable man.

VOTE FOR FEBRUARY PLAYER OF THE MONTH Stevenage supporters can now vote for their GCIS (UK) Ltd Player of the Month Award for February 2021. After an impressive January, Boro continued their strong form into February by picking up 10 points, thanks to wins over Tranmere and Crawley, as well as draws against Morecambe, Walsall, Port Vale and Newport. Our shortlist for the February Player of the Month is as follows: Elliot Osborne: After nearly three months out with injury, Osborne has made a huge impact back in the Stevenage team, adding extra energy and flair to Alex Revell’s side, which was punctuated by his stunning goal at Crawley. Chris Lines: Since signing for the Club in January, Lines has brought another
www.stevenagefc.com
dimension to the Stevenage team with his calm presence in the centre of the pitch and impressive passing range, helping allow the side to gain a greater control of games. Tom Pett: Having found a new home alongside fellow nominee Lines in central midfield, Pett has been instrumental in the team’s success throughout February, showcasing every side to his game from defensive graft to creative guile. Elliott List: Already a Player of the Month winner for September and nominee last month, List’s form is continuing to accelerate after arguably his best month of football in a Stevenage shirt during February, where he added another two goals to his season’s tally. To cast your vote for the GCIS Player of the Month, click here and remember, the vote closes on Monday 8th March at 1:30pm.

sending the south coast side on their way to eight shots on target against Boro’s two. Things did improve in the second period, but although Tom Conlon did see a rasping drive crash off the bar, the points were sealed when sub Kal Naismith hit the second eight minutes from time. BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 6 MARCH Today marks a small first in the story of Stevenage Football Club. A very small first, in fact. That’s because it’s the first time we’ve ever played on this date as a Football League club. Told you it was a small first. We’ve taken to the field just seven times on this date in history; the first coming close to the start of our journey as a senior side and the most recent being one of the final few fixtures we played as a non-league club. If we roll back the years to 1982, it all started with a bang on this date too; Boro’ hitting S&L Corby for six as Trevor Metcalfe and Martin Gittings both scored two apiece. After that, however, it wasn’t quite as spectacular on the goalscoring front. Martin Gittings
But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. We are unbeaten on 6 March up until this point. Hopefully the leap to Football League status won’t disrupt that record; one that includes four wins, three draws, two matches against Woking and a partridge in a pear tree. Alright – maybe not the last one. Mark Hughes was the match-winner for Boro’ in 2007 as we beat the Cards at Kingfield. And who doesn’t celebrate a win over the auld enemy? Michael Bostwick and sub Lee Boylan, meanwhile, put us on track for a third league win on the bounce back in 2010 when we hosted Crawley Town. It was the early stages of a run of form that would ultimately set us on course for Blue Square Premier glory. A similar run of form would be very much welcome right now. No matter the result today, let’s just hope we can protect an unbeaten run on this day that’s 39 years in the making… 1982 Stevenage Borough 6-1 S&L Corby, UCL Premier Division (Metcalfe 2, Gittings 2, Jacobs, Cox) 1990 Letchworth Garden City 0-0 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division 2 North 1993 Dulwich Hamlet 0-2 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Premier Division (Trebble, Gittings) 1999 Southport 1-1 Stevenage Borough, Football Conference (Leadbeater) 2004 Stevenage Borough 1-1 Woking, Nationwide Conference (Elding)

only one game in. Our trip to the CNG Stadium in late October was the first-ever time we’d met Town after a meteoric rise saw them go from National League North to League Two in the space of three seasons. We were also one of the second visitors to the CNG Stadium after its previous 3G playing surface was replaced with a natural turf one following promotion. The game itself between us was a largely uneventful affair. Apart from two bookings for each side, there was little for us to write home about.
YOU AGAIN?: HARROGATE TOWN There’s not much to be said for our head-to-head record against Harrogate Town because, well, it’s
www.stevenagefc.com
It finished goalless, which set an unwanted club record in the process; Boro’ recording a fifth straight game without a goal. We also failed to manage a shot on target. The hosts faired mildly better with just three of their 11 shots forcing Jamie Cumming into any sort of action. We can surely expect more action this time around.

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? I am 21-years-old, working at Long Road Sixth Form. I finished university last year where I studied Sports Science. I am a Chelsea fan which is my dad’s fault! WHAT CLUBS HAVE YOU PREVIOUSLY PLAYED FOR? I played for Arsenal for the majority of my footballing career; I was there 10 years throughout all the age groups. I then moved to London Bees for a few seasons and then to Watford for a few seasons. HOW DO YOU FIND JUGGLING FOOTBALL, TRAINING AND YOUR DAY JOB? I live in Cambridge so it is quite stressful sometimes getting to training with the rush hour traffic after being at work since 8:00am. The travelling can get to me sometimes but it is all worth it. It is quite nice to play football after days at work as I love it, it gives me a break from it all. CAN YOU TELL ME WHO YOUR FOOTBALLING IDOL OR ROLE MODEL WAS WHILST GROWING UP AND WHY? My idol has always been Frank Lampard. Being a Chelsea fan of course I watched him a lot. He is a leader, a playmaker and he’s passionate. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE FEMALE FOOTBALLER AND WHY? I have two. Jordan Nobbs – She is a great player, when I was younger and being in the Arsenal age groups, I used to love watching her play. Also Alex Scott – She is another great player and I love how she is in the pundit side of football now, it is great for women’s football.
26
Stevenage FC v Harrowgate Town
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHT OR ACHIEVEMENT THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? I would say winning the FA Youth Cup with Arsenal a few times and winning the County Cup as well. Going to England Camps when I was younger too, it was always an honour. IT HAS BEEN A STOP START SEASON SO FAR AND AFTER LAST SEASON BEING DECLARED NULL VOID. HOW DO YOU FEEL THE SEASON HAS GONE FOR YOU PERSONALLY? I’ve enjoyed this season so far because last season I had a break as I was concentrating on university so for me it has just been fun to play football again. Obviously it is annoying with COVID-19 but hopefully we will be back on the pitch soon. HOW HAVE YOU BEEN KEEPING FIT AND ACTIVE DURING LOCKDOWN? We have fitness challenges going on, we are in different groups and we are all competitive so we all try and get as many points as possible. So I try and run 3-5k a few times a week. We have fitness zoom sessions as well, every Tuesday and Thursday which are brutal but good for fitness. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR MATCHES AND WHAT DOES YOUR PRE-MATCH ROUTINE LOOK LIKE? I always eat a banana before a match even though I don’t even like bananas. I’ve always done it since I’ve been a kid. I have a good breakfast as well and I listen to a pre match playlist to get me in the zone. DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE-MATCH SUPERSTITIONS? It’s a bit strange but I have to have my lip balm, if I don’t have that then everything goes wrong. I put it on before kick-off and at half time.
www.stevenagefc.com
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FOOTBALL TRICK OR SKILL MOVE TO PULL OUT? Everybody loves a nutmeg. DO YOU HAVE A GO-TO CELEBRATION WHEN YOU SCORE? I don’t really have one no, I kind of just jump in the air and get high fived by my teammates. WHO MAKES YOUR ULTIMATE DREAM TEAM XI [OF FEMALE FOOTBALLERS]? Tough to only pick 11! A mix of retired and current players I’m going to go for: GK – Emma Byrne Defence - Alex Scott, Steph Houghton, Faye White, Leah Williamson Midfield – Jordan Nobbs, Kim Little, Rachel Yankey, Karen Carney Forward – Alex Morgan, Kelly Smith

ACADEMY
G
ood Afternoon and welcome to the Lamex. Good luck to all the players and staff for this afternoon’s fixture, hopefully they can continue their good form and gain an extra three points and continue to look up! I would like to start this week by sending my condolences to the late Glenn Roeder’s family and friends, I was extremely fortunate to spend time with Glenn as part of Darren Sarll’s first team coaching staff a few years ago. Glenn was a lively character who always had some stories to tell and had a very dry sense of humour. I listened and learnt a lot from Glenn and his experiences and knowledge has been invaluable. I would like to share a story that will always make me laugh. Glenn used to sit in the stand on match days and would text me his observation to pass on to Darren, some of the messages received were just hilarious, but I remember one of our forwards missed from a few yards and my message to pass on to Darren was ‘Tell him, he should have scored that!’ – Darren was not impressed at the time but at the end of the game we won and all saw the funny side to very obvious observational text message! There are so many more memories that will stay with us. As for academy updates: Luis Fernandez is continuing on loan at Oxford City until a finalised decsion and last week played in the FA Trophy against Notts County which would have been a valuable experience for him. Our U18’s ended our league campaign with a draw against high-flyers Northampton Town with the goal coming from captain Sam Dreyer. They are always difficult games due to the direct style which mean our defensive display had to be on point and Sam deserved the goal as he lead the line extremely well.
www.stevenagefc.com
Our U23’s have played two games since Ronnie Henry’s report a few weeks ago, unfortunately we came out on the wrong side against Cambridge and Southend Utd, however, there were some impressive performances and we have seen training call ups for a number of junior lads. Next week we face Hemel Hempstead followed by additional fixtures arranged with AFC Wimbledon U23’s & Leicester City U21’s. I know our Foundation Phase Coach Lead Jamal Campbell-Ryce is joining the match day live coverage for this afternoon, he has been a welcomed addition to the staff and during the recent lockdown, we have had the privilege to working closely as he has joined me on my coaching pitch with the U18’s and U23’s. As of next week, we will be welcoming back our schoolboys to training, it will be brilliant to welcome so many faces back and currently the staff are in the process of ensuring their return to play is closely monitored to limit the risk of injury. I believe lots of enjoyable activity is planned. Huge credit to every staff member who has kept in touch with their age groups and keeping them active, it is a very difficult time for lots of people but the social interaction between the staff and players has been admirable. They have had several zoom calls including this week meeting the gaffer and his staff as well as several first team players and last week our U18’s players were put to the test in a lively Q&A session lead by welfare officer Deanne Goring. Finally, I would like to wish Amy Ganderton the very best of luck as she departs for Tottenham Hotspur next week. Amy was a key member of the academy and her departure will be missed, thankfully, she did buy the doughnuts and the staff gave her a warm send off. Good luck. We now have Instagram @stevenagefcyouth – please give us a follow.

WELCOME CLUB MATTERS Founded in 1914, Harrogate AFC had to wait five years for their first match in August 1919 due to the outbreak of the First World War. After a couple of name changes (which included a Harrogate Hotspurs) the Harrogate Town we know now came into being in 1935. By this stage the club were already playing on their current ground of Wetherby Road
but success has truly been very recent. After playing much of their seasons in the Yorkshire and Northern Leagues, Harrogate (or the Sulphurites as they are also known) were founder members of the newly established Conference North in 2004. Remarkably it took until 2018 for Harrogate to reach the summit of non league as they beat Brackley 3-1 in the National League North play-off. They made an instant impact, finishing sixth in their first campaign before losing 3-1 to Fylde in the play-offs. Last season however due to the points per game finish Harrogate beat

Borehamwood 1-0 then won the play-off at Wembley with a 3-1 success over Notts County. The step up has been a solid one with just two defeats in their first nine Football League games setting them up well and the Sulphurites have found it easy enough to keep adding points seeing them well ahead of the relegation battle and keeping their sights on a play-off push.
THE BOSS Simon Weaver passed the ten-year milestone in May 2019 as one of English football’s longest serving managers. In 2015/16 Weaver guided Harrogate to a club high finish of fourth in the National League North and helped the club reach the FA Cup 2nd Round in 2012/13. The 2017/18 season saw Weaver achieve promotion to The National League, beating Brackley in the play-off final in front of 3,000 supporters at a sold out CNG Stadium. Last year he helped Harroagte reach the Football league for the first time with a 3-1 win over Notts County in the Conference play-off final at Wembley.
Weaver featured for the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Kidderminster and Scarborough in his days as a centre half.
WATCH OUT FOR Aaron Martin joined in March 2020 having taken to National League North football like a duck to water at Guiseley. Double figures for goals by the end of his first month at that level saw the Sheffield born frontman named National League North Player of the Month. The 28-year-old went on to score 16 in under 20 appearances before injury disrupted his first season at Nethermoor. Martin’s move to Guiseley followed an eye catching season under former Harrogate coach Vil Powell at Brighouse Town where the striker hit 30 goals and 11 assists in a campaign that saw him named the club’s Player of the Year. Martin’s former clubs also include Staveley Miners Welfare, Worksop Parramore, Goole and a five year spell at Sheffield FC following a youth career spent between Sheffield United and Barnsley.

COMMERCIAL As with every Club in the land, we’ve been starved of a vital income stream, after all, who wants to sponsor a match they can’t attend, hire an executive box they can’t access or sponsor a match ball that nobody will see? But we are ready for business. As soon as we’re allowed to reopen we will be there for you. Hopefully this current set of restrictions will have the desired effect and infection numbers will fall significantly
enough for us to be allowed to restart, most likely with a limited service similar to what was offered for the recent game against Grimsby Town with around 100 people being admitted to the North Stand, before a more general opening of the stadium as time goes on. HARROGATE TOWN A special welcome to Harrogate Town this afternoon on what is their very first visit to Stevenage. A tenuous link between our two clubs is that of Michael Hennigan. Back in 1968, Rotherham-born Mike was Jim Briscoe’s protégé skipper of the fledgling Stevenage Athletic. Mike eventually went on to become the no.2 to Howard Wilkinson at championship-winning Leeds United in 1992. In 1999, Mike was manager at Blackpool before moving on to take over the reins at Harrogate in 2001.
ENGLISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE (EFL) SUPPORTERS’ CHARTER Did you know that the EFL has a Supporters’ Charter? No? Well, you can find it HERE. Comprehensive it isn’t, but it does go someway to afford conflict resolution if a fan/supporter has an issue with their club. First port of call should always be to the club’s Supporters’ Liaison Officer (SLO). In our case that would be Matt Grey, who’s contact details are here: SLO@stevenagefc.com Don’t forget, your Supporters Association is here to help and advise too.
STEVENAGE FOOTBALL ARTIFACT On Thursday May 7th 1964, Stevenage Town beat Norwich City in the final of the East Anglian Cup competition at Broadhall Way. In the 88th minute, Peter Walker broke the 1-1 stalemate by slotting in the winner from close-range, sending thousands of Stevenage fans into ecstasy. To quote a report in the Hertfordshire Express verbatim: “(Broadhall Way) will never stage a more tense, dramatic or emotionally charged game than this East

Anglian Cup Final. This was the Club’s greatest hour.” Norwich had sent down a very strong side fielding a number of their first team players. Apart from winning the trophy, individual players were also issued with mementos of the occasion. The accompanying photograph depicts the miniature cup awarded to the Stevenage goalkeeper, Ray Peacock, who has generously donated it to the archive. The simple inscription reads: “East Anglian Cup 196364” Have you checked your attic or loft yet for any long, lost treasures? Be sure to contact me at Lloyd@SFCSA.co.uk LLOYD BRISCOE SA Chairman

HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY FOOTBALL AT HOME The ‘homemade waste pipe goal’. Waste pipes, push-fit knuckle bends and some barrier fencing. It doesn’t seem like much, but sometimes it’s all you need to transform your garden into a proper footy pitch.
