PHIL WALLACE

ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Hull City. The FA Cup provides a welcome relief from league duty. It’s great to be drawn at home, but I’d have preferred not to have drawn the best side in the competition at this moment… notwithstanding that it’s a pleasure to welcome Hull to our stadium and it’s such a shame that fans from both clubs can’t be here. The atmosphere would have been fantastic. The return of fans here at The Lamex Stadium next Saturday is long awaited. Our Tier 2 ‘maximum’ of 2,000 won’t come into play until/unless we demonstrate to our Safety Group that we can manage this number of people safely. Even then, we may be reduced by social distancing rules. This is exciting and frustrating at the same time. Clearly we can’t continue much longer with no income, but equally to manage a crowd safely will have a cost. It’s borderline whether we’re any better off financially or not – we’ll have to wait and see. But one thing’s for sure – the atmosphere and experience will be 100 times better with people inside the stadium. The allocation of tier levels around the country means some clubs will have home support for a while and some won’t. Is this fair? No it’s not, but then everything about this virus is unfair. I’ve got to the stage where I just accept and comply now, whatever that is. We have been – and still are – at war with this virus and the consequences of that across the country were always going to be unfair. We go out of our way to ensure that our players and staff stay safe and that diligence has so far paid off with the small amount of positive cases we’ve had within our Club. But we cannot drop our guard and therefore I support any

www.stevenagefc.com

measures required to improve the overall situation across the country. I can’t close these notes without mentioning our midweek win. It was a close finish at the end, but if we’d been 4 or 5 nil up after 60 minutes nobody could have said that wasn’t realistic, given the chances we had and missed. We have this debate about missed chances every time it seems, but it happens to teams all over the country and sooner or later they go in. Let’s hope we can get on the scoresheet today and become headlines in the Sunday papers. We have a history of beating superior opposition and having a cup run, so who knows - this season may be one of those. Enjoy the game!

n FA Cup run is certainly better than a poke in the eye, and we got both in this remarkable second round clash 15 years ago. The game itself? Well that was a thriller. Boro took the lead against their Football League opponents when George Boyd stunned the visitors on 5 minutes, curling in after a cleverly worked short corner. But the Cobblers put their foot down and after levelling on 67 minutes looked to have won it eight minutes from time when

Scott McGleish scored from the spot after a Barry Laker foul. Boro weren’t done however and just a minute later Anthony Elding sent the tie to a replay when he slotted in. Of course later headlines were made when Boro coach Lionel Perez was eventually handed a two match touchline ban for poking opposite number Dave Watson in both eyes during the game. Having appeared at Stevenage Magistrates Court he went on to serve community service. DARREN ISTED

he Foundation’s Digital Community Sessions enters into it’s fourth week next week with our ever popular sessions available to keep you active, connected and safe. Our sessions have seen a large number of people engage with us to keep themselves active during the second lockdown, which will also come to an end this coming week and see our community move into the Government’s Tier 2. This announcement will mean that from Monday 7th December the majority of our community based sessions will return to face to face delivery but our commitment to still offer a digital session remains. Foundation CEO, Joe Goude said “Our digital sessions have proved to be a real positive from this second lockdown. Staff have really embraced delivering to participants in a new way and we’ve been able to reach people who wouldn’t normally interact with us. A particular highlight for us has been the amount of children that have taken part in our Virtual After-School Clubs on Mondays and Wednesdays which saw 36 children from 12 different local primary schools

www.stevenagefc.com

take part just this week alone. We are of course, absolutely delighted to be able to be back out delivering in our usual settings and hope that those that have got involved in our digital sessions, will come and join us face to face too.” This coming week will also see the Foundation begin to distribute nearly 4,000 activity packs to vulnerable children and adults in the local community in partnership with Stevenage Borough Council and Lister Hospital. Children’s activity packs will be delivered to every primary and secondary school in the town to allow those who do not have access to IT at home to still be involved, as well as for children currently admitted at Lister Hospital on their children’s wards. Additionally, another 1,000 activity packs will be delivered to adults living in sheltered accommodation and care homes and to patients at Lister Hospital. As ever, the Donation Drop Zone will also be open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11am to 2pm accepting donations for amazing local causes. If you’d like to know more about the work the Foundation does in the local community, please visit www.stevenagefcfoundation.com

WOMEN before I joined my first team - Leyton Orient at 7.

WHO INSPIRED YOU TO PLAY FOOTBALL: Well my Dad got me into it and was actually one of my coaches for years. But I had a great first coach at Orient called Linda, not only did she inspire me to play, I looked up to her and ultimately became a coach because of her too! Even when I see her nearly 30 years on, she always asks about football.

WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE FEMALE FOOTBALLER AND WHY: This is a tough one as when I was younger there wasn’t much exposure to women’s football but I remember Mia Hamm for the USA, it was like watching a superstar and I became in awe of her..

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOTBALL MOMENT AS A PLAYER: Oh wow I always struggle with this question, I love playing so much that I have so many great moments, however, in recent times it would have to be winning the league with Hertford Town (the first time!). We did it with a goal that turned out to be the last kick of the game - nothing like a bit of late drama.

POSITION: Haha! I think that’s open to debate. Let’s just say I’m versatile.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO FOOTBALL: Started playing in the park with my Dad when I was 3 or 4 and it just went from there. Went to a few football camps

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE YOUNG GIRLS STARTING OUT THEIR FOOTBALL JOURNEY: Play for the love of the game first and everything else will follow! If you love what you do the passion, desire and progression will naturally follow.

STEVENAGE FC

ood Afternoon, I would like to wish the gaffer and his team all the best this afternoon as they face Hull City in the FA Cup. I have been present at several games this season and watched closely from the stands as a staff member (but secretly a fan!) and really enjoyed Tuesday’s victory v Port Vale. Most pleasing for me in a selfish way was the selection and performances of both former academy captains, Jack Smith and Arthur Iontton, two products of the youth team who are doing well and showing how reliable they can be when called upon. An important aspect that any young player who steps up needs to show. As for the Under 18’s, we were defeated against Cambridge United in the EFL Youth Alliance however, like Robbie O’Keefe our academy manager mentioned last week, with the emphasis on being relentless with our playing style/ philosophy, it may mean short term pain but long term gain. We continue to strive to develop all the time and as a group of staff we were really pleased with our performance and could see the players

www.stevenagefc.com

stay disciplined in what was being asked. We will now have a two week window of no league action and next Saturday we will take our U17’s down to Cobham to face Chelsea U17’s. We feel giving these boys the opportunity to play against a top premier league side’s academy is a really good opportunity and our U17 group will include future scholars including two new additions in Harrison Smith and Jake Watkiss who have both been offered their two-year scholarship for the start of the 21/22 season this week, taking our total number of 6 from within the academy set-up. In other news, Harry Draper is continuing his return to play following some excellent work from our Academy Physio Matteo Brunelli and we are hopeful Harry will be able to start playing competitive games soon to continue his career after an 18-month spell on the sideline. We have also extended the loan agreements for Alfie Williams and Sam Dreyer at Biggleswade FC and I hope to have more of an update soon when the other second years go out to gain valuable experiences. WELCOME CLUB MATTERS It’s the first time that Boro and The Tigers have come head to head in either league or cup action. Founded in 1904, it took Hull City AFC just a year until they entered the Football League Second Division and they have stayed in the league set up ever since. For more than a century however progress

had been extremely steady, a semi-final their best run in the FA Cup while Hull was known as the largest city without a top flight team until they reached the Premier League in 2008. The seeds to this success had been sewn a little while earlier when they moved from Boothferry Park in 2002, their home of 56 years, to what is now known as the KCOM Stadium. Their promotion to the Premiership came after a play-off win over Bristol City and led to an eight-year spell which saw three relegations and two promotions, Hull recording their best finish of 16th in 2013-14 while that

season also saw their first appearance in the final of the FA Cup. The final was of course a classic, Hull eventually losing 3-2 after extra time, the Tigers blowing a 2-0 lead from the first 10 minutes. The appearance did lead to their first and only European campaign, the run seeing a Europa League win over FK AS Trencin before an exit at the hands of Lokeren of Belgium. Following their exit from the top flight, Hull have struggled to regroup, their spell in the championship marked by seasons of struggle. Ironically, last campaign started well but the break following the first lockdown proved their undoing and a run of 16 defeats from 20 games saw them relegated in July of this year to League One, their first time back in the third tier for 15 years. It’s been an impressive start to this campaign however and Hull come to The Lamex sitting on top of EFL League 1. Their win over fellow title chasers Ipswich on Tuesday night made it six wins in a row in all competitions, indeed they have lost just three times in the

league so far (Swindon, Peterborough and Fleetwood) although the one crumb of comfort for Boro is that they were thumped 5-1 by West Ham in the EFL Cup (that after wins over Sunderland and Leeds on penalties - we have been warned!).

THE BOSS Grant McCann has been boss of The Tigers since June of last year and it has already been 16 months of highs and lows. A strong start went sour at the end of the last campaign as an 8-0 reverse to Wigan saw Hull relegated from the Championship. Fortunes have changed quickly however, and Hull are on a strong run which has seen them top the table and enjoy cup success. With 39 caps for Northern Ireland, McCann enjoyed a fruitful playing career with more than 500 games played at clubs such as West Ham, Cheltenham, Scunthorpe and Peterborough. His managerial career started at Peterborough and also includes Doncaster.

WATCH OUT FOR

Josh Magennis: The 30-year-old Northern Ireland striker has been in a rich vein of form for club and country recently, not bad as he’s also renowned as a goalkeeper. Confused? So were we. Magennis began his early career in Northern Ireland with Glentoran and Lisburn Distillery as a very promising keeper and only switched to a role up front when he turned pro in 2009. After starting at Cardiff, Magennis enjoyed spells with Aberdeen, Charlton and Bolton among others before signing for Hull in August last year. He scored two in last Saturday’s 3-1 win at MK Dons and also netted in Northern Ireland’s 2-1 defeat in Austria two weeks ago. He has scored eight times so far for Hull this campaign and has 56 full international caps.

COMMERCIAL As with every Club in the land, we’ve been starved of a vital income stream, after all, who wants to sponsor a match they can’t attend, hire an executive box they can’t access or sponsor a match ball that nobody will see? But we are ready for business. As soon as we’re allowed to reopen we will be there for you. Hopefully this current set of restrictions will have the desired effect and infection numbers will fall significantly

enough for us to be allowed to restart, most likely with a limited service similar to what was offered for the recent game against Grimsby Town with around 100 people being admitted to the North Stand, before a more general opening of the stadium as time goes on. For the very latest information, or to make a booking please log on to www.stevenagefc.com In the meantime, keep well, we hope to see you soon.

LATEST NEWS

HULL CITY I should like very much to welcome the players and officials of Hull City to Stevenage this afternoon. Many Stevenage and Hull fans will be watching the game live on national television, so at least we will have the opportunity to be here in spirit, if not in presence. I hope that this is the first of many occasions where our two clubs will meet, so that one day Tigers fans can come to The Lamex and we can go to Hull. I think we can all agree that 2020 has been a truly awful year – for all concerned.

FOOTBALL’S BLACK PIONEERS I recently wrote a blog for ‘The Great Save’ website, concerning my research into football in Stevenage. Soon after, I was contacted by a chap called Bill Hern. Bill and his colleague (David Gleave) have just had a book published called “Football’s Black Pioneers”. The book attempts to identify the very first black footballer to represent each club that has played in the Football League. It’s a great book and is essential reading for football historians everywhere. Bill wanted me to confirm his understanding about which was the very first black player to wear the Stevenage shirt. Bill informs that it is likely to be Joe Josiah whose debut was against Arlesey on August 31st 1982, and I’m inclined to agree with him – as does Pete Hayman of Boroguide. The first black player to play for Stevenage as a Football League club is Yemi Odubade when on August 7th 2010 he came as sub on the 61st minute against Macclesfield. Bill also informs me of the notion that the great Roland Butcher also played football for Stevenage. Local lad Roland will forever be known as the

www.stevenagefc.com

very first black cricketer ever to play for England, but did he play for Stevenage? Bill interviewed Roland and posed the question. Roland’s response was that he did used to play alongside the likes of John Brooks, Colin Powell and John Downes, but I can’t remember his actual debut. My research indicates that it’s unlikely that Roland ever wore “the shirt” for the first team – be it Stevenage Town or Stevenage Athletic – but I’d love to be proven otherwise. Incidentally, did you know that Joe Josiah has a famous daughter – the singer, Leona Lewis. Not many people know that.

BACK IN THE DAY... Trawling though my records, I came across an old programme from the 1970’s. The accompanying extract depicts the team that represented Stevenage Athletic against Cambridge United. Ex-Arsenal goalie Geoff Barnet, and exSpurs greats such as Dave Mackay, Alan Gilzean, Terry Venables, Cliff Jones, Terry Dyson and Johnny Brooks. Great days indeed. LLOYD BRISCOE SA Chairman
