G

ood afternoon and welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Leyton Orient. Welcome to The Great Escape! We were all disappointed with the result at Grimsby but have to now make sure that we hit promotion form for the last 16 games of the season. We brought in a new management team in GW and Mike Nelson and have added several new players since GW’s arrival; Dabo, Jake Cassidy, Joe Leesley (loan), Dan Kemp (loan), Simeon Jackson, Patrick Reading, Canice Carroll and Ben Folami (loan) have all joined The Great Escape…. 8 new incoming players meant that GW was not at all happy with the squad he inherited and we have backed him with a major overhaul, adding players in key positions where GW felt the need to improve or provide a stronger competition for places. This of course comes at a huge financial cost as we’ve been unable to move as many players the other way as we’d like to pay for this activity. This is one of the problems of football – when an employee isn’t considered suitable you only have 2 options – keep him around until the end of his contract or allow him to go to another club and pay the difference in wages. At this time of year, clubs smell blood and the offers to take over players contracts are few and far between. It’s all very well to say the latter option is the right one, but the difference in wages has to be found and that’s an expensive business. Balancing this we have the need to develop and maintain a fighting spirit in the squad. To have everyone onside. To make sure only players that are up for The Great Escape play a part in our last Stevenage FC v Leyton Orient

16 games of this season. This of course is GW’s decision. I have told him that this is his gig and The Great Escape is in his hands until the last ball is kicked this season. He was the one that got us into the EFL and it’s right that he should be the one fighting every day to keep us from falling out of it. One thing is for sure – those of us involved are giving every scrap of energy, every minute of our time, every ounce of determination and every sinew in our body to win enough matches to remain in the EFL. We can’t do anything about what’s past, but we can do something about what’s in front of us. Every one of these new lads has been recruited to fight alongside us – and fight we will! Enjoy The Great Escape !! www.stevenagefc.com | 7

oro made their debut in the Conference and after an indifferent start, the turn of the year had seen them begin their remorseless rise up the table. With the likes of Dave Venables, Leo Fortune-West and Adam Parker all starting, Boro were on a strong run of form, but Southport got the first part of a double against the hosts that season as they won at Broadhall Way in front of 1,347.

ON THIS DAY Saturday February 1, 1997 Welling 2 Stevenage 0 Was this the day when it all went wrong for the reigning Conference champs? In a season where there was still a bid for glory on many fronts, Boro unexpectedly came a cropper at unpleasant Welling. Despite fielding such luminaries as Browne, Catlin, Barrowcliff, Smith and Sodje, Boro got nothing from this clash except a bad injury to Barry Hayles. Is it also 23 years ago to the day that Welling officials famously kicked out a certain BBC Three Counties Radio commentator? Information kindly supplied by www.boroguide.co.uk

ood afternoon and welcome to the Lamex for today’s fixture with Leyton Orient. As you may be aware, there is a lot more that goes on, just up the road, at our Shephalbury training ground than just our Academy squads. Feeding into our academy set up, we have a detailed development pyramid which includes our Talent ID Scheme, Development Centre & our Shadow Squads. All of these groups follow the same philosophy, coaching syllabus and playing style as all the academy teams, whilst being coached by our young, enthusiastic academy coaches who understand the values of not only the academy, but the football club as a whole, to ensure that we don’t just develop players, but people for the community as well. We pride ourselves on development of players and try to push as many players through the pathway as we can, following a strict review and report process. Since the start of the season we have seen one of our U16 Shadow Squad players Ben Siggers earn Stevenage FC v Leyton Orient

himself a scholarship for the 2020/21 season and we have also offered an u12 Academy contract to another. Alongside these successes, we have had over 70 appearances in our academy squads from 23 shadow squad players who have played at least some part in academy fixtures this year and we expect this number to break 100 appearances before the season finishes in late April. Coming up our Development & Shadow groups will test themselves against professional clubs Luton Town & Reading FC in February half term which gives the players another opportunity to showcase themselves in a different environment and in game situations. We have looked to add more games to our shadow squad programme and have seen the benefits of these performing competitively against Local grassroot academies and other professional clubs such as West Brom. I hope you enjoy the game, make some noise and COME ON BORO!

FOUNDATION

fter a successful summer we were delighted to announce another three years of delivery of the NCS programme to over a thousand young people in Stevenage and Welwyn. NCS is a four-week summer experience taking away 15 to 17 year olds to gain new life skills. The programme has three key phases all with different opportunities and challenges for the young people. Within this it includes a week’s adventurous activities to develop team working skills. A week’s residential at University Halls to promote independent living and life skills. Lastly two weeks based in Stevenage’s community. Two weeks away from the parents always seems a popular attraction from the young people and parents alike! Last year 204 young people came away with us on NCS on three different programme dates. New for the year just gone was a knife awareness workshop run by Paul Hannaford with a real life story involving the dangerous consequences of drugs, gang culture and knife crime. In addition to this, mental health

workshops from Tic Box Productions, plus a You vs Trains provided by National Rail and the EFL Trust. Currently we are looking to expand our NCS office team with the addition of NCS Business Administration Apprentice (Full Job Description online). This year we are looking to take 150 young people on the NCS programme over the Stevenage area. If you or anyone you know are interested in the NCS programme, please contact us at the Foundation and we’ll be happy to assist viancs@stevenagefc.com On NCS, you’ll mix with new people, and take on fresh challenges together. Before you know it, you’ll be working as a team, as you tackle your own little hurdles. Along the way, you’ll also get a taste for independence and pick up skills that’ll help you smash your future goals. And if that’s not enough for you, you’ll also be given a platform to have your voice heard and pursue a passion project. The NCS experience might last just a few weeks, but the impact? That will last a LOT longer. Over 500,000 people have already done NCS – want to join them? Sign up now at wearencs.com www.stevenagefc.com | 27

WOMEN

S

tevenage FC Women made the long trip to Plymouth in the quarter final of the WNL Plate competition on Sunday and after a brave battle fell to a 3-1 defeat. The visitors began well and although Plymouth had the majority of possession, Stevenage always looked to counter when winning the ball back. Plymouth got the first goal of the game, and it was disappointing as it was a free shot on goal after a corner. Just three minutes later Plymouth made it 2-0, reacting quicker than the visitors to a second ball which was then played through for them to finish, it was a second goal which could have been avoided. It was full credit to Stevenage though that their heads never dropped despite conceding two goals in quick succession and it seemed to raise their level as they finished the half strongly. The second half started in the same vein and the visitors thought they had pulled a goal back, the home keeper keeping it at 2-0 after a great save from Nicole Emmings. But it was second time lucky soon after as a ball over the top from Hannah Vandersluis was pounced upon by Nicole who this time finished in the bottom corner, 2-1. The visitors then had the momentum and could sense an equaliser and thought it would come when Erin Pope was through only to be denied with another amazing save from their keeper. Minutes later the game then turned as Plymouth scored a third with an unfortunate own goal. The strike seemed to put Plymouth in control and they finished the game strongly to win 3-1.

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS

WELCOME This afternoon we welcome Orient back to the Lamex. It’s so good to have the “O’s” back here, and I bid a special welcome to the committee members of the Leyton Orient Supporters’ Club (LOSC). Orient supporter Stephen Jenkins has written a book about Clapton Orient’s contribution to the Footballers’ Battalion in WW1. It’s called: “They Took The Lead” and goes into detail about the club’s former players who served and died during the conflict. Over recent years, LOSC have organised trips to Arras in France, to commemorate the sacrifice and visit the graves of former players. Facilitated by Stephen, these trips have proven both poignant and popular.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (FSA) The next meeting of the FSA’s Southern group will be held at Dulwich Hamlet on March 1st. It starts at noon and if anyone would like to join me there at Champion Hill, they’ll be most welcome. One of the current topics being debated Stevenage FC v Leyton Orient

within the FSA is the price of tickets for the FA Cup. A change to the FA rules allows clubs to pretty much charge what they want. The case being highlighted is the notion that Wolves fans were being charged £55 to see their team play against Manchester United at Old Trafford, whilst Rochdale’s visit to Newcastle was just £10 a ticket. Wolves manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, has gone on record citing the ticket price at Old Trafford as “exorbitant”. The Premier League have recently capped ticket prices for away fans to £30.

STEVENAGE DAY A tad premature, I grant you. However, your SA is considering manning a stall at this year’s Stevenage Day, to be held at the King George V playing fields on Sunday June 14th. If you are so inclined to come join Sarah and I to help “man the stall”, you’d be most welcome. Give it some thought.

WELCOME

JORDAN MAGUIRE-DREW

THE BASICS… Sky Bet League Two newcomers Leyton Orient were promoted from the National League after finishing last season as champions, and made their return to the league after two years away. In recent years, Orient were enjoying more successful times fighting for promotion in League One just seven years ago. The Club unfortunately lost 4-3 to Rotherham in a penalty shoot-out in the Play-Off Final, which included Stevenage’s own Alex Revell scoring a brace to keep his team on top in the final. A team that could have been playing in the Championship, turned into a National League side as the season after their heartache at Wembley was followed up by relegation and two seasons later they found themselves dumped out of the Football League.

points above Boro at the bottom of the table. Orient have lost just four games out of their last eleven, but that inconsistency means they have only been able to record two victories, as they ended a five-game winless run last Saturday when they defeated Newport 2-1 at home. The team couldn’t build on their win in midweek when they lost away to promotion chasers Crewe Alexandra, with Charlie Kirk and David Powell on-hand to record a 2-0 victory.

STAR MAN… Josh Wright made an immediate impact in his first game back at Brisbane Road with a second-half winner on his debut and Orient’s first game back in League Two against Cheltenham; he is the club’s top scorer in the league with eight goals.

The midfielder, who started his career at Charlton, had three spells at Orient and was later signed from the O’s to Gillingham in 2015, in which he was named 2017 Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season.

ROSS EMBLETON

THE GAFFER… Ross Embleton was named interim head coach following the tragic passing of Justin Edinburgh in June last year. Embleton was given a 12-month contract in January. The 38-year-old in his first managerial role with the East London club, worked as youth development manager at Orient, Tottenham, Bournemouth and Norwich, along with working as a first-team coach at Swindon Town. by Taylor Catton
