"We're in good shape"
CEO MIKE PINK
Good afternoon and welcome to the Players, Directors and Officials of Leyton Orient, along with both sets of supporters for today’s match at The Lamex Stadium.
As we know, both clubs came up from League Two last season and have adapted and performed incredibly well in League One, sitting in the top half of the table as the finale approaches. This season seems to have flown by and we’ve enjoyed some fantastic results and great performances along the way. It’s been memorable, however there are still nine games to go and so much for us to play for with the run in.
Off the field and from a commercial perspective, our recent Captains’ Dinner in The Broadhall Suite with Ronnie Henry, Mark Roberts and Carl Piergianni was a great success and thoroughly enjoyable with our current and ex-skippers reminiscing about their time at The Boro’. Thank you to all
those that supported the event and I’m sure we will look to do more of these dinners in the future.
We’ve seen a really strong and increasing take up in the hire of The 76 Lounge and The Broadhall Suite. Both rooms offer a great opportunity to enjoy a party, conference or a dinner so if you have something you want to plan, please contact Jennie Cairns our Head of Facilities and C&B jenniec@stevenagefc.com. I would like to thank all our staff and volunteers for their continued hard work and dedication, also a credit to our Ground staff who have got the pitches at the stadium and training ground in the best shape possible despite some heavy downpours in the last few weeks.
Your support at home and away has been magnificent this season. There will another big crowd in the stadium today, so please get behind the team again in what will be a fantastic atmosphere.
I hope you enjoy the game.

FIRST GAME?
I cannot remember my very first game I am that old! The first game of note that I can remember going to was Birmingham City away in the FA Cup.
FIRST YEAR, SEASON?
1997 – We lost, but the atmosphere was great and we put up a good fight, which is always the Boro way.
WHICH SECTION OF THE GROUND DO YOU NORMALLY WATCH THE MATCHES FROM?
East Stand
BEST MEMORY/MEMORIES OF SUPPORTING BORO?
Best memory has to be the Villa game last year. It doesn’t get better than that and we were lucky enough to be about 6 rows back in the corner where the winning goal was scored right in front of us. Really memorable.
A big happy belated Birthday to our lovely disabled supporter Martin Clarke who was 66 on the 5th March. We hope you had a lovely day!
Simon Leadbetter
FAVOURITE ALL-TIME PLAYER (AND WHY)?
Barry Hayles. What a standout player, very skilful and pwerful. He was a right handful back in the day. We used to go to the Boro games just to watch him alone and it was no surprise to us at the time when he eventually went on to play further up the league for Fulham.
FAVOURITE CURRENT PLAYER (AND WHY)?
Has to be Carl Piergianni. As the chant says: “When the ball’s in the air you know he’s never gonna lose!” What a great player and role model who is always are the heartbeat of the team and raising the game of all those around him when needed.
WHY DO YOU LOVE BORO?
What’s not to love? Firstly, lower league football is where it’s at. Still keeping it real at the Lamex and with Stevie Evans pulling all the strings, the club is going places!
FAVOURITE BORO SHIRT?
Current home shirt.

big Boro welcome goes out to our four mascots this afternoon who are hoping to give us the edge and three more points against Orient.
First up it’s Hadley Gericke, 7, who lives in South Croydon. Hadley loves his food and also enjoys games and playing football and Jamie Reid is his favourite Boro player.
Next we welcome Fraiser Palmer, 7, who lives in Stevenage. Fraiser really enjoys his football and Jordan Roberts is his big Boro star.
A massive Stevenage hello goes to Freddie O’Gorman, 9, who lives in Stevenage. Freddie enjoys football and reading and Carl Piergianni is his number one player.
Last but by no means least we welcome Indie Silver, 10. Indie lives in Harlow and her hobbies are football, dancing and singing while Carl Piergianni is her favourite player. We hope all mascots have an amazing time with us today and that Boro March on once again.

Our brilliant interactive Boro quiz is here, five questions to test your knowledge. Today we welcome Leyton Orient, what do you really know about the Os?
FROM THE ARCHIVES
After only two goals in their last three games and a frustrating 0-0 in their last fixture away to Barnet, Stevenage fans were due some excitement as well as a few goals to celebrate – this fixture certainly provided just that.
Home fans inside Broadhall Way would have been slumping into their seats early into the second half as Stevenage and Tamworth tussled to be the first team to score. It was the visitors that finally broke the deadlock in the 68th minute as Mark Cooper gave the away faithful something to shout about.
Just as it appeared that Boro may be gifting Tamworth their tenth victory of the season, in stepped Anthony Elding. Elding fired home in
Saturday
the 82nd minute to level the games balance with eight minutes of regulatory time remaining. The 1,646 fans attending didn’t have to wait long for yet another twist in the game as the home fans were celebrating yet again, before they could even have a chance to sit back down from their equaliser. Boro striker, Dino Maamria found the back of the net merely a minute after Elding’s equaliser to launch Stevenage into the lead. There was yet another goal to come, although it was only one that would strengthen Boro’s position in the game as Maamria secured his brace by converting from the penalty spot. The late turnaround from Stevenage meant their unbeaten run reached five games, with Tamworth now winless in four.
ALFIE NICHOLSONBORO HISTORY
ON THIS DAY: 16 MARCH
All in all, today has been good to Boro’ over the years; 10 previous outings on 16 March delivering six wins, two draws, and two defeats. Of those wins, three of them involved us scoring four goals – more on which in a bit.
First, let’s clear up the defeats. Both of them occurred during the 1980s, which is now a clear generation ago. One now doesn’t technically exist in the record books either. Our 3-0 drubbing at Epping Town in 1985 would be expunged when the hosts resigned from the league at the end of the 19845 Servowarm League Division Two North season.
From the 1990s onwards, however, our fortunes were much improved. In 1996, Corey Browne scored a brace as Boro’ comfortably defeated Kidderminster Harriers at Broadhall Way. Kiddy had been Conference champions in 1994 – but they were outclassed 4-1 as we continued our march towards a first-ever Conference title win of our own.
We now fast forward to 2013 – arguably one of our greatest results of the Football League era. Gary Smith was strug-gling as gaffer. Having recalled Dani Lopez from loan at Barnet where he’d scored a hattrick a week earlier, he put the Spanish striker into the starting XI against the Blades – and was rewarded handsomely as Lopez bagged another trio.
BORO’ AT THIS STAGE…
Gameweek 38
With print deadlines and rescheduled games being what they are, our achievements at Peterborough United – or lack of – aren’t included here. In spite of this, history still offers some encouragement for our playoff hopes. That’s because we come into this fixture on a minimum of 61 points. And that means we’re at least four points better off than 2011-2 – the season we made the League One playoffs. It’s a tantalising carrot being dangled before us this season…
The bests and worsts at this stage? Well, it’s
1985 Epping Town 3-0 Stevenage Borough*, Servowarm League Division Two North
1987 Stevenage Borough 0-1 Boreham Wood, Vauxhall Opel League Division One
1991 Barton Rovers 0-2 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Football League Division 2 North (Hughes, Cardines)
1996 Stevenage Borough 4-1 Kidderminster Harriers, GM Vauxhall Conference (Smith, Browne 2, Hayles)
1998 Stevenage Borough 4-2 Slough Town, Football Conference (Perkins, Wordsworth, Beevor, Grazioli)
1999 Welling United 1-1 Stevenage Borough, Football Conference (Strouts)
2002 Stevenage Borough 1-0 Stalybridge Celtic, FA Trophy QF (DJ Campbell)
2010 Stevenage Borough 1-0 Histon, Blue Square Premier (Ashton)
2013 Stevenage 4-0 Sheffield United, npower League One (Lopez 3, Akins)
2019 MK Dons 1-1 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two (Chair)
incredible to think we came into game week 38 of the 1990-1 season with the knowledge that another win would take us to the 100-point mark. The following campaign, meanwhile, saw us on 90 points at this point of proceedings too. At the bottom of the list? Well, the 2019-20 season had already been ended by this point (thankfully) – so propping things up are 2015-6 and 2021-2, where we had only 34 points on the board.
Those are the only two seasons after 37 games in which we were averaging under a point per game.
IT’S LEYTON ORIENT AGAIN…
The Os have become increasingly familiar to Boro’ over the years; 22 previous meetings now the current count as we go into today’s clash. All but three have come in league competition, with today’s guests coming out on top in eight – twice as many as we’ve managed. Seven, meanwhile, have ended all square. Here at the Lamex, our record isn’t much better – 10 clashes here yielding two Boro’ wins, three draws, and five away wins; the last of which was October 2020.
MAGIC MOMENT...
Sky Bet League Two – 21 January 2023
There’s no need to go much further back than last season for our magic moment with the Os. Clearly, the East London side were setting the pace in League Two coming into 2023. We were one of a select few who had taken on the task of chasing them down. A goalless draw at Brisbane Road barely a month beforehand didn’t earn us too many admirers in that neck of the woods. Nor, to be fair, would the performance we put in at home.
Boro’ were quick out of the traps; Jamie Reid and Jordan Roberts putting us almost out of sight before 11 minutes had registered on the clock. The Os cause wasn’t helped much further by the dismissal of Idris El Mizouni – stupidly picking up a second yellow for deliberate handball just before the break. Carl Piergianni went close just after half time, before Luke Norris wrapped things up – and put us within two points of top spot – with our third goal in stoppage time.
By Pete Hayman courtesy of boroguide.co.ukON BOTH SIDES…
To play today?: Unless we’re mistaken, you’ll only find one man this afternoon to have turned out for both clubs. Alex Revell spent one season at Brisbane Road in 2010-1. He opted to leave in summer 2011, however; joining Rotherham United. Obviously, Revs has since found his way to the Lamex – first arriving here in summer 2018.
Best of the Rest: Of the rest, it’s perhaps fair to say that certain players enjoyed more fortuitous times with the Os than here – Ben Chor-ley and Kevin Lisbie for certain, but Jobi McAnuff and Romain Vincelot too?
There are others, however, who made themselves favourites at Boro’ too – Charlie Lee, Scott Cuthbert, and Ashley Bayes.
If it’s blasts from the pasts you’re after, Leo Fortune-West had a slightly less productive loan spell at the Os a couple of years after his short-term stay at Broadhall Way. Lee Harvey, meanwhile, started his career at Brisbane Road and spent 10 years there –racking up more than 200 appearances in the process. He was released by the Os in summer 1993.

Two late goals at the end of regulation and extra time ensured Stevenage FCW departed from Trafford Park with their dreams of a second consecutive League Cup Final appearance dashed. Goals from Matilda Thomas-O’Keefe and Hannah Nebbitt were systematically wiped out before a last minute goal in extra time to complete a hat trick saw Hannah Fuller see her side through to the showpiece event.
It was a battle of attrition as the game kicked off. Neither side carved open any chances of note as both sides defended resolutely. Amy Makewell did have an early free kick that was saved down low by Bryony Williams following a foul on Lilia Dempsey which resulted in a yellow card for Leah Newcombe.
It took twenty minutes to break the deadlock, but when it came it was a thing of beauty. A ball through to Thomas-O’Keefe from Amy Makewell left the youngster with work to do. However, she lifted it in mid air over the oncoming Williams and into the net for a sublime finish and a ninth goal of the season.
Wroxham didn’t much about. Within minutes they were down the other end and a thumping shot
was turned onto the bar by Mia O’Brien. The rebound was cleared by Emily Schofield only for the ball to return over the defence for Fuller to head over O’Brien and slot in at the near post past Beatrice Rogers.
Boro’ were level for just two minutes, enough time for a foul near the centre circle, Nebbitt stepped up centrally to send a free kick looping over Williams and into the net. The goalkeeper will be disappointed as it looked covered all the way, but the ball was expertly placed by the dead ball specialist.
The remainder of the half saw Chloe Gunn and Nebbitt exit the field, the latter with a knock, while O’Brien pulled off two great saves to ensure Stevenage went in at the half with a slender lead.
The second half saw an early chance for Amy Gooderham as she marauded down the right side and ghosted into the area, but her effort was well held down low by Williams.
Boro’ came under attack from this point, with bodies being thrown on the line to protect the advantage. Rogers somehow got back for an excellent challenge that quelled the Wroxham attack and Boro’ went on to make a couple more changes bringing Niamh Day and Kristal Clarke on to freshen up the attack.
Lilia Dempsey was unfortunate not to have been given a penalty after her run into the box resulted in her being tripped en route. The forward appealed, but the referee decided there wasn’t enough and play continued.
It was still the defence making the headlines
It was a battle of attrition as the game kicked off
however, this time Grace Brooks, who rolled back the years to protect the goal with an outrageous clearance on the line when the equaliser looked inevitable.
Boro’ maintained the defence and as the final minute of regulation time approached, disaster struck. A through ball to Fuller left Brooks stretching and her light touch wasn’t enough. It knocked Fuller off course but she still gathered the ball and sent a shot goalwards that O’Brien palmed away, but only for the ball to strike the base of the post and agonisingly roll over the line. Wroxham were level and extra time was forced.
Extra time saw a better second half for Stevenage, with Gooderham again causing chaos and Thomas-O’Keefe making a nuisance of herself too. The latter was brought down when racing one-on-one with Williams, a foul that put Albany Hodgson into the book, with the referee generously accepting that the remaining defender would have got back had the young forward not been upended.
As the minutes ticked past, penalties seemed inevitable, until Wroxham earned a corner. With seconds remaining, Fuller rose highest to nod home and break Boro’ hearts. Makewell did see a final opportunity crash off the bar following a free kick, but the ball was cleared and the whistle was blown.
Boro’ players dropped to their knees. The girls had given everything they had and come up just short. A second final was not to be, but it would be difficult not to be impressed with the effort and endeavour on display.

Meet the boss
Following his retirement from playing after a career spanning almost 700 appearances, Wellens became a first team coach at Oldham, and less than three months later, was placed in caretaker charge of the team. After impressing in his temporary role, Wellens was given a two year contract in October 2017.
Wellens moved on to Swindon Town, where he was confirmed as Head Coach in November of 2018.
In his first season at the County Ground, he guided the Robins to a 13th place finish. The following season, Wellens was able to regalvanise the Robins, guiding them back to League One.
The Wiltshire club won the title early due to the Covid-19 pandemic curtailing the season, with PPG the deciding factor.
After nine games of the 2020/21 League One campaign, Wellens left Swindon for Salford City. During his tenure, he oversaw EFL trophy success, as Salford overcame Portsmouth, managed by former O’s boss Kenny Jackett’s Portsmouth on penalties, after a goalless 120 minutes at Wembley Stadium. However a poor run of league

results saw Wellens leave the Peninsula Stadium after just over four months in charge. Following his spell at the Ammies, Wellens returned to another of his former clubs in the shape of Doncaster Rovers, in May of 2021. Donny were in a precarious position upon Wellens’ arrival, with several key players suffering long term injuries.
Wellens was though, replaced as Doncaster manager in December of 2021, with the club struggling towards the bottom of the SkyBet League One table.

LATEST NEWS
Orient’s mascot is a Wyvern, and they call him “Theo”. Not a lot of people know that.
I absolutely love it when we play the “O’s” and meeting up with their fantastic supporters. I have nothing but respect for Leyton Orient’s fans, it’s like welcoming family back to The Lamex here in Stevenage.
David Dodd is the chairman of the Leyton Orient Supporters Club, and an article he drafted in a blog (Leyton Laureate) recently resonated with me. David was talking about the accelerated change in the demographic of the Brisbane Road area and went on to say: “I think the club has got to engage as much as they can with the local community. A lot of our support is outside of the E10 postcode, and even our membership is broadly from further out in Essex”.
Same here David. Less than 50% of the Stevenage SA’s members live in the SG1 and SG2 postcodes, but we do celebrate the amount of support we get from towns like Hitchin, Letchworth, Baldock, Royston, Welwyn GC, Hertford and many other towns and villages in between.
So, a huge welcome to David and all of his committee this afternoon.
HUGH PRATT
Hugh was one of those rare, exceptional players who played for Stevenage Town, Stevenage Athletic and Stevenage Borough. He was a graduate of Cambridge University and played his first Southern League game for Stevenage against Nuneaton Borough on Aug 13th 1966. He quickly established himself within George Curtis’s promotion-winning side which included Johnny Brooks, Robin Chandler, Ray Freeman, Ray Peacock and Dickie England. If fact, when Port Vale came to Broadhall Way in 1967, it was Hugh’s job to mark Sir Stanley Matthews (!)
When Stevenage Town disbanded in 1968, Hugh went to Hitchin, joining the hugely successful Canaries side which finished 2nd in the Isthmian and winners of the London Senior Cup. Hugh returned to Stevenage under Bill Coldwell’s management, and went on to win the Stevenage
Athletic “Player of the Year” award in 1975.
After Athletic’s demise, Hugh played for Letchworth before returning to a fledgling Stevenage Borough, joining us in the Wallspan Combination on the infamous King George V’s “roped-off pitch”. In recent years, Hugh had been suffering from dementia and subsequently moved from the locality to Northampton to be closer to his family. The club and I were deeply saddened to learn of Hugh’s passing on February 24th. Hugh leaves his wife, Jen, two sons (David and Robert) and their families.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Hugh’s family at this time.
INTERCITY BORO
On Saturday March 23rd, Brunton Park beckons as we go to Carlisle United. It’s a five hour and 275 mile haul up to Cumbria – hence the 08:00am departure from The Lamex.
At a cost of just £35 a head for each SA member, can we count on your support in joining us on this trip? You can either book on-line via the SA’s website here or you can contact John Carroll on 01438 814285 (after 6.00pm).
