THE CHAIRMAN

PHIL WALLACE

G

ood afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Leyton Orient. I think I have always said that whenever we play Orient, I am compromised because this was my boyhood team. Their recent changes off the pitch, introducing US investors, is a great move and I always enjoy talking with Nigel (Travis). However, my past was pushed aside by my total commitment to Stevenage long ago, so that is firmly in place and clear. I am desperate for us to win and continue to work hard to get us on winning ways. I was not happy at all after the loss at Northampton. Silly, basic errors gave goals away and I think Northampton were as surprised as us at our nervousness and the way we gifted all three of their goals. That has to stop, and it has to stop now. I am sure there will be changes for the game, not just in personnel but in tenacity, desire, confidence and commitment. I want to see the attractive football we saw at the start of the season but tempered with safety first and resolute defending at the back. I do not want

www.stevenagefc.com

to see kamikaze football at the back or people falling over when they should be strong and decisive. Sometimes, there comes a moment where you put the past behind you and that moment is now. We have an honest management group and honest players. They are hand-picked by Revs and Dean and are very talented, but they need to regain confidence in themselves and go for it. The trepidation shown recently has to be banished and replaced by grit and determination. We are 13 games in – a few wins now makes a huge difference in the look of the league table. We are one point a game for those 13 games and we are better than that, so it is time to show it. Off the pitch we are in really good shape. All the stadium work is complete, our finances are strong and improvements to the training ground continues. Let’s hear you in support of the lads. Enjoy the game!

e go back in time some eight years for this Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash, and for good reason as it featured a breathless win in a five-goal thriller for the hosts. 10-man Boro reached the area semi-final of this competition with this win, achieved by twice taking two goal leads against the side who were top of League 1 at the time. And amazingly all the meaningful action came in the first half as Francois Zoko put Boro ahead on just two minutes, converting a Luke Freeman cross. The lead was then doubled on 10 minutes when Lucas Akins

netted, but Orient showed spirit and reduced arrears just three minutes later. Remarkably it was 3-1 to Boro on just 15 minutes when they converted a penalty, Morais scoring after Freeman’s volley was handled. The visitors were thrown a lifeline when Roarie Deacon was sent off just before the break and Orient pulled one back on the stroke of half-time to make it 3-2 at the interval. Orient started the second period on top but Boro put in a defensive masterclass and with some shrewd GW changes the hosts earned a well deserved victory. BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 23 OCTOBER We reckon you can take two things from Boro’s record on this date. The first? With just one exception, it’s been a kind day to us. And the second? If we’re having a good October, you could probably back us to get the three points without too much doubt. How much this pattern of history will weigh on the current Boro’ squad is yours to debate. But surely you’ll take some comfort in the knowledge that we usually get something from our efforts on this date. We’ll start with the exception, however. Nuneaton Borough came to Broadhall Way on 23 October 1993 for the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. At that time, we’d never made to the First Round Proper. To be honest, we’d actually never got as far as the Fourth Qualifying Round either. So, it was uncharted territory for us. A home tie against Southern League Premier Division opposition in the form of Nuneaton Borough seemed like a golden opportunity to go one step further. But we couldn’t take it. It remains, to date, our only blemish on 23 October. Our 1-0 win at home to Hornchurch in 1989 kept up an unbeaten record in the month of October that year, while a 4-1 home win against Welling United in 1995 took our goal count to 12 in four games for October of that year. And it’s no shock that Carl Alford scored twice in our 3-3 draw at Northwich Victo-ria in 1999 – there was no way we were scoring three without Carlo being on the scoresheet at some point. On 23 October 2004, Boro’ recorded a 3-1 victory at Morecambe; a third league win

16

in a row and – given we pipped the Shrimps to the playoffs – potentially crucial. We just didn’t know it at the time. Funnily enough, our next assignment on this date after that was Morecambe away – this time in League Two. Alas, we couldn’t repeat the trick of six years before and had to settle for a dour goalless draw. Port Vale at home in 2018 went the same way on this date, sandwiching a 2-1 home victory over Portsmouth in 2012; Filipe Morais with a brace as we posted what was our fifth win from the nine games we’ve now played on this date. What does the 10th hold? 1984 Stevenage Borough 2-0 Tring Town, Herts Senior Cup R1 (R Marshall, Lowe) 1989 Stevenage Borough 1-0 Hornchurch, Vauxhall Opel League Division 2 North (Richardson) 1993 Stevenage Borough 1-2 Nuneaton Borough, FA Cup R4Q (Debnam) 1995 Stevenage Borough 4-1 Welling United, GM Vauxhall Conference (Webster, Barrowcliff, Browne, Hayles) 1999 Northwich Victoria 3-3 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Alford 2, Trott) 2004 Morecambe 1-3 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Goodliffe, Hocking, Brady) 2010 Morecambe 0-0 Stevenage, npower League Two 2012 Stevenage 2-1 Portsmouth, npower League One (Morais 2) 2018 Stevenage 0-0 Port Vale, Sky Bet League Two

Stevenage FC v Exeter City

YOU AGAIN? LEYTON ORIENT Exeter, Northampton, and now Leyton Orient; if ever there was a trio of club against whom Boro’ haven’t fared as well as we’d like over the years, there you are. Our form against the Os is certainly far away from what we’d call desirable – four wins from 17 meetings to date, with the East London club getting the better of us on nine occasions. So, in a way, both of us are chasing minor milestones today. Even a draw would count as one too, with four of them so far. It all started so well for us, didn’t it? A memorable FA Cup Round Two win in December 1996. Sadly, that appears to be an exception to the general rule. It took 15 years before we’d meet them again, due mainly to the fact we had to climb a whole two divisions to run into them. Not that the reunion was too memorable; a goalless draw at their place on 19 No-vember 2011 didn’t exactly whet the appetite. Less so did the 1-0 home defeat in our first match of January 2012. It seemed that all wasn’t lost as Lucas Akins earned us a 1-0 win at Brisbane Road in August 2012. But two successive home defeats (again by that 1-0 scoreline) kept turning the tide in their favour. Not even our Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Quarter Final success in November 2013 could pull things back in our favour. We failed to win any of the following five (including a Checkatrade Trophy group game in August 2016). February 2017 delivered our biggest and, to date, most recent win against them. At that point in time, the Os were on the way down into the National League. Four separate men were on target that day as our thumping 4-1 victory at the Lamex edged them nearer towards the trapdoor.

www.stevenagefc.com

Back the Os came in 2019 and, with the greatest of respects to them, we wish they hadn’t. In the two seasons they’ve now been back in League Two, Boro’ have failed to score against them in 360 minutes of football. At home, we’ve lost 0-3 (February 2020) and 0-2 (October 2020) respectively. Either side of those dismal defeats, we’ve had a pair of goalless draws at theirs. Better than nothing, but nowhere near what we’d ideally like to see. So, if we’re to start bringing that balance of power back in our favour, we need to do something today we’ve not done since early 2017. Because you can’t win games without scoring goals…

ACADEMY

G

ood afternoon all. Not too much going on for the U18s recently as they have had a two week break from the games programme. At schoolboy level we have had plenty of challenging games and have seen some really impressive individual performances Looking back our U17 squad, consisting of mainly U16s with a few U17s and U15s have put in two excellent performances in the London Cup v Crystal Palace (2-0 winners) and Millwall (1-0 defeat). On both occasions we were much younger than our opponents and it was really fulfilling to see how quickly our young players are developing. Off the pitch there have been plenty of changes as we see the departure of some key personnel. We are prone to the ‘bigger’ clubs looking at the excellent work we do within the Academy and identifying staff that can improve their set up, in much the same way they watch our players. Over the past few weeks Jamal Campbell Ryce has departed to join Peterborough as their U18/23 Coach. Jamma brought real game mindset not only to the Foundation Phase but also the U18 group who he regularly came into contact with. In his short time with us he really

20

impressed with his handling of young players whilst ensuring players got the message regarding standards and aspirations. Also departing is Ben Hicham who has been responsible for many of the current scholar group development as the Head Coach of our U15 /16 squads. Ben has worked tirelessly over many years here at the club and will be greatly missed. His coaching style, the way he focuses on the individual to become the best version of themselves and how he brought new ideas to the table cannot be overstated and we wish him every success in his new role at Portsmouth. Finally, in a restructure Jorden Gibson will vacate his role as Lead U18 coach at the end of the month and take on the role of Academy Operations Manager where he will work alongside myself to ensure the Academy remains fully compliant within the EFL and Premier League guidelines in relation to Safe to Operate, Standards and Compliance. Lots of changes but similarly lots of opportunities for staff to push themselves forward and develop in much the same way our players do! ROBBIE O’KEEFE – Academy Manager

WOMEN Lauren Bannister defender

Lauren, congratulations on your first start for the senior team against Cambridge United, how did it feel? It was really nice to get the call to say that I would be playing for the First Team and not the U23s; I was really grateful to find out that I would be starting. It was a really good opportunity to play for the First Team. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your progression to the First Team? I’m currently a university student at Wembley. I moved to London about two months ago when I came from my previous club which I was at for a long period of time. I then came to training at Stevenage, did pre-season here and then signed to play for the under 23s. What challenges have you encountered so far? I think because playing a lot with the under 23s and with a lot of new players coming in and going; us all bonding and playing together – understanding how we each play. I think that’s got better as this season with the performances we’ve got on the pitch. How have you found the step up playing senior women’s football for Stevenage? I think it’s really nice because all of the girls are really welcoming and easy to get along with; when the environment is like that it’s really nice. I think physically, the RESULTS: Harlow Town 0-2 Stevenage FCW Stevenage FCW 0-2 Cambridge United Stevenage FCW 4-0 Garston Ladies [County Cup]

www.stevenagefc.com

pace of the game is a lot quicker and a lot different to the under 23s but overall it’s been really good. What are your ambitions for the remainder of the season? To get more game time and keep playing. To get some more wins because I feel at the start of the season we were just getting used to playing with each other and I think we now know each other it’s just about progressing and getting more wins on the board. What advice would you give to young girls who are looking to progress within women’s football? I think it’s all about trusting yourself and trusting your own ability but also listening to coaches and other members of staff who work around you as I think that’s the only way you can improve. It has been a strong start to the season for Orient who have kept pace around the play-off places. After a 1-1 opening day draw at Salford and a loss on penalties to QPR in the League Cup, the O’s lost just one in their next nine games. A 2-0 league reverse at home to Harrogate was

the only blot on the landscape as they also saw wins against Exeter, Bradford, Oldham and Bristol Rovers. They have also made strong EFL Trophy progress with wins over Crawley and Southampton U-21.

Stevenage FC v Leyton Orient

THE BOSS Kenny Jackett put pen to paper on a one-year rolling contract to become the club’s First Team Manager in May 2021. A promotion winner with three clubs, Jackett’s managerial career began at Watford in 1996, a club he had made over 330 appearances for in his career. Promotions followed at his next three clubs, guiding Swansea City up from League Two in 2004/05, before then taking Millwall up to the Championship via Wembley in 2009/10. In his next role, Jackett steered Wolves to a League One title, setting a divisional record of 103 points, and picking up the Manager of the Year award in the process. A short spell at Rotherham United was followed by four years at Portsmouth, where Jackett picked up the Football League Trophy for the second time in his career, departing with a win rate of over 50%.

ONE TO WATCH Harry Smith joined Leyton Orient in July 2021 for an undisclosed fee from Northampton Town, signing a two-year deal. The striker started his career in non-league before making the move to Millwall in 2016 as a 21-year-old. Soon came a loan spell at Swindon Town, where Smith played alongside current O’s Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux. Harry made a permanent switch to Macclesfield Town ahead of the 18/19 season and made 39 league appearances – notching nine goals. In the summer of 2019, he made the switch to Northampton Town and enjoyed a play-off final win in his first campaign, earning promotion to League One.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS LEYTON ORIENT This afternoon we welcome our good friends from Brisbane Road. Considered to be something of a “local derby”, I do enjoy the banter between Stevenage and Orient’s fans, which has always been convivial. I have no reason to doubt it won’t be the same again this afternoon. Welcome also to Tony Roome who is Orient’s delegate to the Football Supporters’ Association, as well as being a good, personal friend of mine.

TOWN’S GOT TALENT Paul Fry, who went to school and grew up in Stevenage, initially worked as a journalist at the Stevenage Gazette. Inspired by the iconic wall in the Leisure Centre which depicts the sportspeople who put Stevenage on the map, Paul has written a book which profiles dozens of individuals, as well as charting its growth through sporting achievements. The book is more than just Lewis Hamilton, with stories of people overcoming adversity and fulfilling their potential brought into focus. Stevenage Football Club features heavily in the book, with its formation in 1976 up to present day charted by Jim Briscoe, Neil Trebble, James Dilnutt, Phil Wallace, Paul Fairclough, Ronnie Henry, Mark Roberts and Luke Norris. The book is available from the Club Shop at a cost of just £20.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY A reminder that Remembrance Sunday this year is on November 14th and that a wreath will be laid at the War Memorial in the High Street on behalf of the members of the SA. Please join us at 11:00am for the ceremony, if you can.

FAN IN FOCUS This week, I’m delighted to present long-time Boro fan, Lee Cole. Lee was the lucky winner of our very first 50/50 draw back at The Lamex since February 15th 2020, when the outbreak of the Covid pandemic decimated the rest of the season. Lee is seen in the attached photo with his winning ticket, alongside SA committee member Andrew Mugridge. Hearty congratulations to Lee - and to the return of the 50/50 initiative.

INTER-CITY BORO Our next away-day sees the Boro travelling to Newport County on October 30th. Departing the Lamex at 10:00am, the cost is just £30 for members and £35 for nonmembers (concessions apply). Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
