ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Leyton Orient. Our opponents today sit just above us in the table having won 2, drawn 2 and lost 3 of their 7 games. They had an excellent win at Tranmere on Tuesday night, but lost at home to Grimsby last Saturday whilst we narrowly lost 1-0 to both FGR and Newport. So the stage is set for an exciting game. I always look forward to a game against Orient, especially when the game is at Stevenage. It was the club I watched as a boy growing up in Walthamstow and I have fond memories of waiting at their training ground at the end of my street during school holidays as a young kid, to get autographs from the likes of Sid Bishop, Stan Charlton, Eddie Bailey, Cyril Lea and Mark Lazarus. Long time ago. Wow. At Stevenage we don’t enjoy the same history but over the 20 years I’ve been here I would like to think we’ve created a stadium and team for future generations to watch – and perhaps there’s a young lad in Stevenage that might one day look back on the players today with the same admiration I had, or sneak into our training ground for autographs! We’ve had lots going on off the field, trying to make ends meet, yet still have no solution to the ‘bail out’ that the Premier League were mandated to provide to the EFL as part of Project Restart. From a cash flow point of view we’re OK at the moment but only because we’ve drawn down most of the EFL basic award and solidarity money for the year. Quite what happens in a few months time when that money runs out is the key question. Taking further loans won’t solve football’s problems – all that’s doing is kicking the can down the road. Playing without crowds

www.stevenagefc.com

and income, whilst paying our players and operating costs in full, can only go on for so long….. The lost income each week has gone to money heaven – it’s not something we’ll get back later, so loans won’t solve the issue. The Project Big Picture proposal would have meant a significant change in the way football as an industry operates. It provided for EFL L1 /2 clubs to be sustainable, able to make a profit so that they can reinvest that profit back into facilities and make football more affordable for fans. I sincerely hope we see PBP2 shortly and that it’s a package that is both endorsed by the Premier League and provides for clubs in Leagues 1 and 2 to be sustainable. Back to the game – we’re essentially still a new team so it’s a chance for us to start making winning a habit, to reward our players and management for the hard work they’ve put it to get to this point. We have some great players here and I’m looking forward to the game!

his was a key season in Boro’s history and almost exactly 25 years ago today this dominant performance was to be Boro’s fourth win in a row. The run was to see them notch six straight victories on the bounce. This win put Boro up to eighth

place as they surged up the table and the charge to the title began. Cloughie would have been pleased that the goals were shared around with Webster, Barrowcliff, Browne and Hayles all netting in front of what was a disappointing crowd of 1,903 DARREN ISTED

FOUNDATION As we approach the end of the first half term of the Foundation’s calender and head into Soccer Camps at The Academy next week, we always take these mini breaks in our “normal” routine to reflect and plan for what is to come. It’s been a challenging first few months for everyone at the Foundation as we’ve reactivated some of our activity and been reengaging with local schools. To date we’re back up to around 50% of our activity with 20 community based and X school based sessions taking place each week. Working with 13 primary schools each week has been fantastic to not only interact with the pupils and get them active but also to support the teaching staff that have done an incredible job since the pandemic began. The team have had to adapt to a new way of working with our Covid protocols and remote working for office based staff becoming integral to ensure that everyone stays safe during this period. Credit to all the staff who have applied themselves superbly and have done everything they can to keep us engaging with our local community. Amongst all of this we’ve continue to look at how the Foundation can adapt and provide positive opportunities for our community and in the near future we’ll be beginning public consultation for a new strategy for the charity to take us through until 2024. This is an exciting piece of work and something that we are all really looking forward to getting started on. In the short term we’ve been fortunate to be in a position to offer opportunities for people to join the team and I’m delighted to announce that Leah Casali and Jamie Mincher will be joining our team in the next couple of weeks. Both join us in brand new roles supporting our Community & Health work, spearheaded

www.stevenagefc.com

by Lorna Wormald and Hannah Marsh. Leah joins us as Community & Health Admin Support whilst Jamie will take up the Community Sport & Health Apprenticeship. Both roles will allow for us to grow our offer in this area with sessions such as Walking Football, Kicks, Active Tots, Intro to Exercise and Get Set to Go all benefitting from their involvement. In the next couple of weeks, we will be adding again with two more brand new positions. A NCS Admin Support will join the team to provide day to day support to Ryan Jackett and Dani Toyn in our NCS team. We’ll also be appointing an Employability & Skills Officer at the Foundation to develop our “Training Ground” offer, providing traineeship programmes alongside health & wellbeing support to those in our community with gaining employment and overcoming some of the challenges that unemployment brings. This programme has recently been backed by The Follett Trust who have very generously donated £2,000 towards getting this project started and, as always, we thank them for their ongoing support of our work. The coming winter months will be tough for a lot of our community and we are working hard to make sure we can be there for you all, as we were during the initial lockdown. Please keep an eye out on our social media channels or website for more information. Come On You Boro JOE GOUDE - Stevenage FC Foundation Chief Executive

ACADEMY

t has been a really hectic few weeks within the Academy. Lots of games, lots of training sessions, lots of last minute changes due to weather and COVID issues (externally) and throughout it all the support and understanding of our parents and players has been outstanding and underlines how dedicated to football life our Stevenage families are. We certainly don’t underestimate the commitment our parents make in getting their sons to training and all the staff really appreciate the efforts they are making. To drive, in some cases, 90 minutes 4 times a week, to get to a game or training, to have to sit outside in the car and wait for their boy to finish their activity some 2 hours later, to then drive back home, is an arduous task and I would like to thank them for their fantastic efforts. In order to try and fill the gaps we have taken the steps to try and film every game the boys play plus training sessions and have created a private youtube channel for parents to be able to watch their son play, albeit not live!

www.stevenagefc.com

To help support this initiative we have been really inventive around how we can deliver and have recruited several outstanding analysts who pour their heart and soul into creating highlighted match footage and individual clips. This week saw our first analysis session with our U9’s as part of their development where they had their game clipped to reflect the actions they had been working on throughout the week, which really helps cement learning. On the analysis side we broke further ground this week by agreeing a partnership with Playermaker, technology that records passes made whether they are forward / backwards, right foot/left foot contacts, sprints made, acceleration and deaccelerations and distance covered in a game. All of these stats will help guide our scholars towards their full potential and underlines the commitment the Club have in their Academy. Enjoy the game! ROBBIE O’KEEFE – Academy Manager

WELCOME

The season began very well for Orient with a win on the opening day at Oldham followed up by a league draw at Mansfield. But their form has taken something of a downward turn since their EFL Cup clash with Spurs was called off due to a number of coronavirus cases in the Orient camp which led to the Premier League outfit being given a bye into the next round. Orient had reached the third round after

CLUB MATTERS Leyton Orient appear to be finding their feet back in the EFL set-up after they lost their place and their 112-year tenure in the league with relegation back in 2017. Last season, in their first campaign back, they finished in 17th place on the Points Per Game (PPG) method. This campaign has once again proved to be mixed for the Os as they currently sit in 15th place, three points ahead of Boro.

two strong performances which saw them win their first round game at Forest Green 2-1 and then emerge with a 3-2 success at home to Plymouth. Since the outbreak, Orient have lost 2-0 at home to Cheltenham, earned a point at Barrow and lost to Walsall (2-1) and Grimsby (3-2). Ominously for Boro however they come into this game on the back of a 1-0 win at Tranmere on Tuesday evening, front man Danny Johnson grabbing the winner.

THE BOSS Ross Embleton is the head coach at Leyton Orient, having been appointed in the role on a 12-month contract back in January. The 38-year-old has been involved with the London side for the past four years, and has twice taken over as interim head coach, the second time following the tragic death of Justin Edinburgh in June 2019. Embleton has also worked in a footballing capacity at Spurs, Norwich, Swindon and Bournemouth.

WATCH OUT FOR Danny Johnson is a front man in a rich vein of form at the moment, he certainly knows the way to goal with 8 strikes in all competitions this season. The 27-year-old claimed the winner on Tuesday at Tranmere and has also scored in the league against Walsall, Barrow, Mansfield and Oldham. He joined Orient from Dundee this year where he scored five times in 19 games. Boro fans may also remember him for a four game loan spell when with Cardiff back in 2015.

TODAY’S OPPOSITION I really enjoy it when Stevenage play Leyton Orient. The football apart, it’s a chance for me to catch up with Tony Roome my counterpart at the Leyton Orient Supporters Club and a very good friend to boot. Sadly, we won’t be able to meet up again on this occasion, so I’ll just say “hi” through the medium of the ethernet.

DIGITAL MEMBERSHIP CARD All SA members should now be taking delivery of the new season’s digital membership card. Crisp, clean and with ‘state-of-the-art’ graphics, this card really illustrates how far and professional the SA has come of late. Use it to make purchases via “My Account” with the club shop, and to obtain really great discounts with a number of participating retailers.

DES GALLAGHER I had a really interesting conversation with Des Gallagher the other week regarding the number of appearances he made with the club. Des cites Wikipedia as saying that Chris Day had achieved 361 games in goal for Stevenage whilst Des having attained 358. Des hotly contests this and informs me that his total appearances for the Boro came in at 387, just four games behind the other Boro legend of that time, Martin Gittings on 391. Always one for a challenge, the notion of proving Des right has both myself and Boroguide’s Pete Hayman searching

through our respective archives, hoping to find the ‘missing’ 29 games to prove Des right. If anyone else is able to shed light on this valuable statistic then I would love to hear from them.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION A petition to get fans back into football grounds in line with other sectors of the economy has secured Parliamentary debate after reaching almost 200,000 signatures. The issue was at the centre of a Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee hearing last week and will return to Parliament on Monday 9th November. We await the outcome with keen interest. LLOYD BRISCOE SA Chairman
