ood afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Lincoln City FC, along with both sets of supporters for today’s match at The Lamex Stadium. There has been lots happening off the field to coincide with the great work by Steve, his staff and the team who are in a great run of form. In the build-up to Christmas and over the festive period, we have some exciting games against local opposition to look forward to with the visit of Peterborough United (Tuesday 28/11), Exeter City (16/12), Northampton Town (Boxing Day) and Cambridge United (29/12) in the league. Following our thrilling 4-3 First Round victory over Tranmere Rovers, we now face Port Vale at The Lamex Stadium in the FA Cup Second Round on December 2nd. We all remember last season’s fantastic cup run so it would be great to see as many supporters as possible at these matches cheering the team on. All matches are available to buy now at www.borotickets.co.uk. With Christmas coming up, please check out www.stevenagefcshop.com and Club Shop as we have re-stocked on Replica Kit, Training Wear, launched a new retro shirt from 1991/92 and added some further leisurewear and Christmas items.
Earlier in the year, we launched the Junior Boro Membership for our younger fans, and we are pleased to confirm we have scheduled the Christmas Party for Thursday 7th December, at Gravity Stevenage - our Junior Boro partner. All members get free access to the party, including the opportunity to meet First Team players and Boro Bear. There is still plenty of time to sign up as a member and enjoy the chance to visit Gravity, receiving all the benefits of being part of Junior Boro. From a commercial perspective, the launch of the Boro Business Club has been a success, with over 50 attendees at the last meeting. If you are interested in networking, then please do get in touch. Match Sponsorships and Hospitality are filling up, and we now have limited space on all the matches leading up to the end of the year. If interested, please contact our Head of Commercial, David Hoskins at davidh@ stevenagefc.com. Finally, with it being an International Break, it puts the club domestic football focus on Leagues One and Two, which is great for the competition and gives us a platform to showcase Stevenage Football Club. Hope you enjoy the game and thank you for your support.

e have two mascots today as Boro do battle with Lincoln and we wish them both an amazing afternoon with us. First up it’s a big Boro hi to Taylor Packer. Taylor, 12, attends Marriotts School and lives in Stevenage. His favourite player is Carl Piergianni and supporting Boro home and away is his main hobby. Also here today is Samuel France, 10. Samuel lives in Welwyn GC and attends Oaklands School. Skipper Piergianni is also his favourite player and he lists a number of hobbies including football, rugby, swimming, karate, netball and tennis. We are sure both will have a top time with us and bring the good luck needed for another three points.

tevenage were lingering around the lower parts of the League 1 table when they welcomed play-off hopeful Rotherham United. A bright start for Steve Evans’ Rotherham was rewarded as Kieran Agard had a close-range header well-stopped by Chris Day, but the save only took the ball into the path of Ben Pringle who slammed the ball into the net. Rotherham continued to test Day, so much so he was injured and replaced by Steve Arnold at half-time. The sub keeper was swiftly called into action in the second half as a dangerous corner meant that Arnold had to punch the ball away and then make a superb stop. him as Rotherham goal scorer, Pringle, floated into a free-kick which he failed to correctly position himself for, allowing Rotherham fullback, Claude Davis to outjump the ‘keeper and nod the ball in to double the lead. Five minutes after Rotherham’s second, they had a third as Michael O’Connor expertly controlled a high pass; the midfielder then struck the ball powerfully past a diving Arnold who ultimately couldn’t prevent O’Connor’s sublime strike which sealed Rotherham’s first win in over a month. Stevenage boss, Graham Westley expressed his disappointment in the result by stating how he felt it was a ‘dreadful performance’ with not much to say that he ‘was pleased with’. BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 18 NOVEMBER
With a record of just one victory from seven previous outings on this date in history, a strong case (perhaps) for us to get today’s clash moved at late notice? Stimmo had Adam Miller to thank for separating us from Greys Athletic on 18 No-vember 2006; our then-gaffer getting one over on his former employers at Broadhall Way. Apart from that, today is a largely forgettable date in the diary; beginning with a two-goal Herts Charity Cup defeat at Boreham Wood in 1995. More up to date was a 1-0 League Two loss at Mansfield Town six years ago. And in-between all that is little else to celebrate – unless a 1-1 draw at Aveley in 1989 resonates with you? Even the great Boro’ side that went on to win the 1995-6 GM Vauxhall Conference title were fallible that season. Dave Venables scored what proved to be a mere consolation on 18 November 1995 as Southport returned home with three points; a 3-1 scoreline that was replicated 13 years later when Histon took advantage of Lawrie Wilson’s red card.
IT’S LINCOLN CITY AGAIN…
Us and the Imps? It’s been a while; nearly four years having passed since Ilias Chair inspired a dramatic comeback to earn us a point at Sincil Bank. In doing so, it ended a run of three successive defeats at their expense. But that was a run that only started when after they returned from their Conference National purgatory. Our only other past league encounters had come in the season they were relegated back to non-league; Boro’ doing a league double in 2010-1. Oh, there was also that 1998 FA Cup Round Two clash at their place. But we don’t need to mention that.
1985 Stevenage Borough 0-2 Boreham Wood, Herts Charity Cup 1989 Aveley 1-1 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division Two North (McComb) 1995 Stevenage Borough 1-3 Southport, GM Vauxhall Conference (Venables) 2000 Scarborough 2-2 Stevenage Borough, Nationwide Conference (Kirby, Hay) 2006 Stevenage Borough 1-0 Grays Athletic, Conference National (Miller) 2008 Stevenage Borough 1-3 Histon, Blue Square Premier (Morison; Wilson s/o) 2017 Mansfield Town 1-0 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two
BORO’ AT THIS STAGE…
Gameweek 18 Boro’ continue to grind out the points – and a return of 29 from a possible 51 is our joint-14th best effort since 1980; level with 1989-90 and 1999-00. Those two campaigns technically outperform this one on Goal Difference (1989-90) and Goals Scored (1999-00). But, equally, we’re on a different level nowadays. In contrast with other League One campaigns, it’s all bunching up now. The lead that 2012-3 held over this campaign has dwindled to a mere three points. The 2011-2 season, meanwhile, is just three points behind where we’re at now. Best campaigns at this stage? Well, the 19934 Diadora League Premier Division season still sets the standard (44 pts from a possible 51), with the 1990-1 Vauxhall Football League Division Two North campaign the only other where we were over 40 points (42). Conversely, the 2019-20 and 2020-1 seasons lagged well behind at this point (13 points!). It is again worth pointing out that 1980-1 would’ve seen us on 41 points if it were three points for a win back then.

MAGIC MOMENT
npower League Two – Saturday 19 March 2011
2 STEVENAGE FC 1
LINCOLN CITY
Boro’ only have two wins from seven previous meetings with the Imps – and both during the 2011-2 campaign. A 1-0 win at Sincil Bank in September 2010 was our first away league win in the Football League. That’s by the by and it was mid-March when they travelled to our place for the first time. And, by that point, Boro’ were shaping up for a punt at the playoff places. With that in mind, three points against the Imps was a crucial step towards that ambition. We had to do it the tough way though; Scott Laird handling inside the area on 33 minutes and Ashley Grimes converting the spot kick. It wasn’t a lead that lasted long, mind. Lawrie Wilson was the unlikely hero to level things up on 37 minutes, before doubling his tally with a super duper effort on the hour mark to give us a onegoal advantage that we’d go on to preserve.
ON BOTH SIDES…
To play today?: In our camp, both Roberts and Harry Anderson used to be on the books at Lincoln. Anderson was with the Imps, first on loan and then permanently between 2017 and 2021. Meanwhile, Roberts spent a short time on loan at today’s guests in 2019. On the other side, Tyler Walker had a productive loan here during the 2016-7 campaign. He’s now in his second spell at Sincil Bank, signing permanently this summer after a loan spell in the 2019-20 season. Best of the Rest: Quite a few players can count Boro’ and Lincoln among their former clubs. Michael Bostwick, Anthony Elding, John Nutter, Tom Pett, and Craig Reid are some of the notable ones. There’s also Paul Farman, Luke Foster, Tony Battersby, and Leo Fortune-West to keep you occupied even more. And both sides on show today have the honour of being among the 15,471 that Jefferson Louis played for at one time or another during his lengthy, nomadic career.

ACADEMY G ood Afternoon and welcome to the Lamex Stadium and more academy notes. Firstly, as always the very best of luck to the gaffer and the team for this afternoon fixture v Lincoln City. From an academy perspective it has been an excellent week. Two more senior debuts on Tuesday night v Crystal Palace. David Hicks who has been with the club since U10’s followed in his father footsteps and made his EFL debut following impressive performances in the U18’s and then on work experience at Potters Bar Town FC. Our link with Potters Bar Town has been nothing but positive, Makise Evans enjoyed a spell as a 16 year old last season before becoming the clubs youngster debutant and Theo Alexandrou earned his professional contract following a spell there. We are grateful to the club for giving young players an opportunity at Step 3 football. Tuesday night also saw Max Woodford (15 years old, 6 months, 9 days) enter the frame as he came on for Taye Ashby-Hammond. Max also broke Makise record of becoming the youngster debutant to play for the football club. We are thrilled with what we saw on Tuesday and the win made it better. As an academy we are proud of all players, we are thankful to have a Chairman, Manager and senior staff who are willing to give young players opportunities. The players have earnt their opportunities, worked hard, stayed humble and
recent consistent performance have given the first team the trust to give them a chance. Tuesday nights are the moment we as academy staff work incredible hard for, seeing the faces on the family members and the players themselves. A moment they don’t forget. Coaches often take credit for the development players and although have play a huge part the key consistent figure in their life’s are family members. Parent have travelled the country, seen them at the lowest and picked up them, give them unconditional support and I am thankful for their support. Congratulation to Max, David, the staff, and the family. But this is one appearance, they now have to work harder to get the 2nd, 3rd, 4th appearances etc In other news, we also have the FA Youth Cup R2 to look forward to next week as we travel to AFC Wimbledon to compete is a difficult cup tie. Ronnie, Nick and the staff will be best preparing the players to hopefully get through. Kick off is 19:00 on Thursday 23rd November at Plough Lane also known as the Cherry Red Record Stadium. As always please show some support and keep an eye out on our social media platforms: X - @StevenageYouth Instagram - @stevenagefcacademy Come on boro! JORDEN GIBSON ACADEMY MANAGER

player and Barking wanted to catch Boro’ out. Kelsey Millen saw her opportunity fly wide of the goal before Ray needed to pull out a rare stop at her own end. From fifty minutes onwards – Stevenage dominated the game. Barking suffered being carved open time and again, with the Boro’ side passing their opponents into oblivion. Passes do not make prizes however. Millen had further opportunities off target, while Mathilda Fidler had beaten the offside trap, only for her heavy first touch to spurn the chance. Appeals were turned down for what appeared to be a stonewall penalty on Lilia Dempsey as she was hauled down in the box whilst winning the footrace to the ball, but the referee said no. Rebecca Edge headed wide from a corner, whilst Gooderham saw her best effort of the half fly straight at Hand.
S
tevenage FCW were the victims of the ultimate smash and grab as ten-player Barking netted a late winner at The County Ground this weekend. The hat trick hero of the reverse fixture – Laura Bunton – was the only person to score this time around, in a fixture that had seen twenty-one goals in the last three outings. Barking started the strongest with Bunton trying to find her range as her first effort from distance nearly caught out Celine Ray who was saved by the outside of the post. Her second effrt flew wide of the mark before Boro’ began to assert their influence on the game. Amy Gooderham, Hannah Nebbitt and Amy Makewell – on her one hundredth appearance for the club – all saw efforts saved well by Serena Hand, with the centurion also seeing a free kick and a further effort pass the goal on it’s way to the crowd. Gooderham and Makewell combined well as the half drew to a close with efforts that looked destined for the net, but the real drama came in the last minute of the half. Lindsay Sibbons, who had received a caution for her protestations at a coming together, saw a further yellow following a needless challenge that resulted in her dismissal from the field of play. Boro’ needed to take advantage of the extra
Boro pressed onwards, but it was a breakaway that cost them dearly. With three minutes remaining, Bunton got clear in the Boro’ half and ran away from Emily Schofield. With Boro’ careful not to give anything away, Bunton made it to the byline and back in; her shot was goalwards, but Ray sent the ball straight back into her path for an easy finish. Stevenage rallied again and saw a free kick saved, Makewell shoot wide when she seemed odds on to score and Fidler with an effort in the final minute that was saved in mid-air by Hand. It was not meant to be for Boro’ as the whistle blew and Barking celebrated a huge three points. “It was one of those games,” the Boro’ manager Dave Perry told us afterwards. “We see it so often that the ten players are galvanised by the perceived injustice of the sending off. We created chances, their ‘keeper was their player of the match! She is a good goalkeeper, but we should have made more of the chances we had.”

STEVENAGE FC SUPPORTS SAMARITANS’ REAL PEOPLE REAL STORIES CAMPAIGN
Samaritans knows there is still a stigma around men seeking help when they’re finding life tough. Their campaign Real People Real Stories reminds men that when life is tough, Samaritans is there to listen. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50, with men aged 20-59 being those most at risk. A survey by Samaritans found that two in five (41%) men in England, Scotland and Wales age 20-59 do not seek support when they need to, because they prefer to solve their problems themselves. Based on this, Samaritans approached men who had been through tough times to ask them to share their stories. These men are brothers, friends, sons, and fathers. They were open about their struggles, and each one gave Samaritans some handwritten words to sum up their story. Samaritans has taken these words, and the stories behind them, to create a campaign that draws on this human connection. These are real men, sharing their stories to encourage others to seek help by contacting Samaritans. Stevenage FC is proud to support this campaign as part of our commitment to take the mental wellbeing of our supporters, players, and staff seriously. We’re delighted to be able to mark International Men’s Day by raising awareness for this campaign and
hope that everyone connected with the club will take a moment to share the powerful stories and contact Samaritans’ national helpline on 116 123 if they need someone to listen. REMINISCENCE THERAPY
On Thursday 9th November, in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire, the Foundation hosted a Festival of Social Science event titled “Reminiscence therapy: how football can help unlock lost memories for people living with dementia”. Attendees joined the Foundation team in the Benington Suite at the Lamex Stadium with tea, coffee, cake and a wonderful view over the pitch. The event was well attended with a mixture of service providers (Hertswise, Alzheimer’s Society, Music24, Hertfordshire County Council, Stevenage Borough Council, Hospice of St Francis, The Red Shed and others), and members of the public (including a carer and person living with dementia). Attendees were also joined by Mayor of Stevenage, Councillor Myla Arceno and her Consort John Arceno, who are both great supporters of health and wellbeing and dementia care. The event was a mixture of speakers including Hannah Marsh (Head of Health & Wellbeing, Stevenage FC Foundation); Danny Buckley (Senior Lecturer, University of Hertfordshire); Dr. Elspeth Mathie (Assistant Director, Centre for Public Health and Community Care, CRIPACC,
University of Hertfordshire, NIHR ARC East of England) and Charlotte Bird (Active Ageing Officer, Herts Sports & Physical Activity Partnership). Danny Buckley presented on research into the benefits of reminiscence therapy for people affected by dementia and led onto promoting our Boro Bygones Reminiscence programme which will be re-launching in January 2024. One attendee confirmed “how much goes on in Stevenage”, but attendees agreed it is difficult to access after a dementia diagnosis. As part of the University of Hertfordshire research, they have worked with Stevenage Borough Council to produce a physical activities booklet which can be accessed here. The event continues an on-going collaboration between the University of Hertfordshire and local partners, ensuring research includes people with lived experience, organisations who already have on-going relationships with those who need support, the NHS and the local authority. Working together we can enable research to meet the needs and priorities of local communities. For more information on Boro Bygones, which will re-launch on Thursday 18th January 2024, please contact community@stevenagefcf.com

“Fan engagement has never been stronger at Lincoln City” – so says Tony Smith who is the chair of the club’s supporters’ board. Since 2018 the Supporters Board has given the fans of Lincoln a voice on key non-football matters and is extensively used to shape the director’s decision making. Tony’s board comprises Andy Helgesen, Charlie Beeston, Chris Laming, Jackie Atkins, Jon Clack, Jonathan Battersby, Marcus Burton, Roy Thompson, Samantha Kendall and Toby Freestone. I hope you all enjoy your visit to Stevenage this afternoon.

Phil Ireton
Season 1923-24 saw Stevenage Athletic FC affiliating to the North Herts FA and joining the North Herts League. They were a busy club because they also entered the North Herts Benevolent Shield, the Herts Junior Cup, the Letchworth Hospital Cup, the Hitchin Hospital Cup, the Greg Cup and the Letchworth & District League. Their home ground was in Sish Lane (what we now call the King George V Playing Fields), likely the same location that Stevenage Borough played on some 54 years later in 1977. One of the leading lights in Stevenage Athletic was a young man by the name of Philip Ireton. 18 year old Philip was one of the principal organisers of the club, and would often venture out on his bicycle and go visit all the team members during the week in order to ensure their attendance at a game on the following Saturday. Philip went on to become a local politician of some note (CBE, DL, JP), eventually earning the distinction of becoming a Freeman of the Town. They even named a street after him – Ireton Court – which is situated next to the Marquis of Lorne in the High Street. LLOYD BRISCOE Chair - Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association
