CHIEF EXECUTIVE

ALEX TUNBRIDGE

G

ood evening and welcome to tonight’s Carabao Cup First Round tie against Luton Town and a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters who have made the short journey from Bedfordshire. Saturday finally saw the long awaited return of supporters to The Lamex Stadium and what proved to be a highly enjoyable day both on and off the pitch. Whilst the first half was very much a half where neither team wanted to make an early season mistake, in the second half we showed an initial insight into what this team is about and ground out a win against a Barrow side who will be tough opposition this season. Tonight is a reminder that football at this level comes thick and fast and the team behind the scenes have been working exceptionally hard since Saturday to be ready again for this evening’s game. The opening day of the season is often a challenge from an operational perspective which this season has been heightened due to the long delay in supporters returning. The world has moved on in

www.stevenagefc.com

the past 18 months and businesses are having to adapt, we are no different and have recognised the need to increase contactless payment points throughout the stadium. From our next fixture against Port Vale we will be introducing a new App based ordering system at all of our food kiosks and bars, as well as contactless payment points. Additionally, we will also be increasing contactless payment points in all of the Club’s bars and retail areas. Saturday also saw the use of the new 76 Lounge in the North Stand for matchday hospitality, with the start of 2019/20 Season Ticket Holders enjoying their Gesture of Goodwill Hospitality Packages. This will be an area which we will be seeking to develop over the course of the season, as we strive to make the new stand one of the best venues in the town. Back to this evening and the tie speaks for itself, it has been a while since we have faced each other and I am sure like all previous encounters it will be a passionate affair. Enjoy the game.

oro managed just two wins from their first eight of the 2016-17 season, though to be fair a 1-0 League Cup success at Ipswich and this 2-1 win at home to the Hatters did help to paper over any cracks. And it was a thrilling last gasp strike which settled this one in front of a bumper early season crowd of 3,517. Chances fell to both sides before Luton went ahead on 14 minutes, Cameron McGeehan netting with a shot from

the right flank which took a massive deflection. In a frantic second half Boro got back on terms when Wolves loanee Connor Hunte headed home a Godden cross on the hour mark. That was to lead to a remarkable 30 minutes plus added time in which both sides could have taken the win, Boro scoring the decisive winner deep into injury time when a Tom Pett break led to a slick pass for Matt Godden to slide home a dramatic clincher. BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 10 AUGUST For most teams, the first few results of a new season can tell you a lot about the direction in which things are going. We always felt this rule didn’t really apply to Boro’, though. We won six out of six at the start of the 199900 Conference season – but ended up falling a fair way short of top spot. Meanwhile, we made a sluggish start to the 2009-10 campaign and ended up winning the Blue Square Premier title. But it turns out that it’s a rule that does sometimes apply to us – based on previous results from this date in history. A curtain-raiser to our first Conference defence, Boro’ stepped out on 10 August 1996 in the Herts Charity Cup Final and secured the first of what we hoped would be many pieces of silverware that year. In the end, however, that’d be the only trophy as our title hopes faded late on and Woking ended our FA Trophy ambitions at the semi-final stage. Fast forward onto 2013 and Boro’ were looking to build on a semi-famous cupset against Ipswich Town as we rocked up at Swindon’s County Ground. A first-half strike for the hosts proved enough to see off our challenge that day, and left us with two league defeats from two. We went onto be relegated from League One that season. How about 2019 then? Actually, don’t answer that one. We all know how dreadfully the 2019-20 campaign went (in more ways than one). But we had an early premonition of what was to come in the form of another one-goal defeat early on in the season; Exeter City winning 1-0 at the Lamex thanks to Nicky Law’s last-minute goal on this day. While we’re happy enough not to read too much into what today’s result

16

means for the rest of the season, it’s about time we caught a break on this date in history. It’s been quarter of a century since we last won on it, after all… 1996 Stevenage Borough 4-2 St Albans City, Herts Charity Cup Final (Hayles 2, Sodje, Ugbah) 2013 Swindon Town 1-0 Stevenage, Sky Bet League One 2019 Stevenage 0-1 Exeter City, Sky Bet League Two

2019 | Kick-Off: 3.00p

YOU AGAIN? LUTON TOWN… We can only imagine that Luton Town thought that, finally, they had seen the back of us. For many years, Boro’ were almost a constant reminder of how far the Hatters had fallen from their halcyon days of being a top flight team. After two skirmishes in the LDV Trophy during the early 2000s, our near-enough

Stevenage FC v Barrow AFC

neighbours plunged into the Conference in 2009 and struggled to rise back up to where they had come from. Of course, that’s no longer the case now; the Hatters currently in the Championship and well above us in the grander scheme of things. But it wasn’t easy and – as our head-to-head record shows – we certainly played our role in making them work for it. From 12 previous matches, we’ve won four and lost six. When you think that both of those LDV Trophy encounters from back in the day went in their favour, we’ve had as much joy as them when we were equals. It’s a strange head-to-head record in some respects. Neither side have particularly owned matters on their own patch. For us, we’ve won one out of five at the Lamex in league encounters. Our last date together at the Lamex ended in an incredible 1-1 draw; James Collins scoring from the spot on 85 minutes for them, before Danny Newton equalised just three minutes later. And it actually now means we’re unbeaten in three at home to the Hatters. Before that, Matt Godden’s 96th-minute goal completed our comeback and secured a 2-1 home League Two win back

www.stevenagefc.com

in August 2016. Meanwhile, our November 2015 home encounter finished goalless. It’s lucky and unlucky in equal measure that we’re at home today. It means we can’t talk about our memorable win at Kenilworth Road in September 2009. But it also means we won’t have to dwell on our 7-1 hammering there – our last trip to their place in October 2017. Today, our first meeting with the Hatters for more than three years has the potential to be an intriguing match. Boro’ have the chance to spruce up the home record against them. For our guests, meanwhile, it’s a return to a venue that hasn’t exactly been an unhappy hunting ground over the years. It’s also the first time since 2003 that we don’t come together as equals. That’s just how it is now. But this is a cup tie. Anything can happen. So, let’s see what does…

ACADEMY

G

ood evening, What a result on Saturday and what a way to start our season. Unfortunately, our first league game against AFC Wimbledon at the weekend was postponed due to a water logged pitch. It is certainly something I don’t think I’ve ever known on the opening day of the season! I am always asked about the various roles within the academy so I thought I would give our Lead Academy Analyst, Steve Barker, the opportunity to explain in further detail what he is doing for our apprentices.

STEVE BARKER “My role entails overseeing and managing the performance analysis department within the academy, from U9-U18s. “On a day-to-day basis it entails making sure all U18s sessions get recorded and players are wearing their GPS pods. This allows us to gather objective data to grade against position-specific KPIs and to provide feedback to individuals based on their performance. This is an important aspect of performance for the apprentices as they can identify and work towards specific targets in order to develop their game. The same is done for match days. “We try to provide 2 analysis sessions per week (dependent on the schedule) for the apprentices, which cover pre-, post- and opposition analysis, in order to give the boys as much preparation as possible heading into games on the weekend. “Analysis for the schoolboys (U9-U16s) is currently on the start of a journey. We recently acquired HUDL, which allows all individuals to review and clip

20

their individual performances from games. “This season we have formed a partnership with Bedfordshire University and have taken on 3 interns whose role and responsibility will be to manage and deliver analysis sessions to all age groups within the academy”. Many thanks to Steve for sharing his role with us, good luck tonight against our arch rivals Luton Town FC. Enjoy the game! Come on Boro!! JORDEN GIBSON – Professional Development Phase Lead Coach

ONE TO WATCH Former Millwall and Wycombe midfielder Fred Onyedinma set up two and scored one in Saturday’s 3-0 romp at home to Peterborough.

The 24-year-old Nigerian started his professional career at Millwall in 2014 after graduating from the youth academy, where he remained until 2019, bagging 12 goals and assisting 15 in 151 appearances. He signed for Luton in late May 2021 for an undisclosed fee. Onyedinma spent two spells on loan at Wycombe, first in League Two as a teenager and then in League One during 2018-19, before signing for them permanently in the summer of 2019. After helping them secure promotion from League One in his first campaign, he finished with five goals and four assists in 46 appearances in the Chairboys’ season in the Championship, before leaving Adams Park to join the Hatters and remain in the second tier following Wycombe’s relegation.

DID YOU KNOW?

THE BOSS Welshman Nathan Jones returned to Kenilworth Road for a second spell as manager on his 47th birthday in late May 2020, as the Hatters started training again following the suspension of the EFL season due to the Coronavirus pandemic. He was initially appointed in January 2016 as John Still’s successor, but left for Stoke City in January 2019 having led the club from the lower reaches of League Two to the automatic promotion places in League One. A former coach and assistantmanager at Brighton & Hove Albion, Charlton Athletic and Yeovil Town, he was a player at Kenilworth Road in 1995 but left without making an appearance. His first full season in the Hatters hot-seat ended with a fourthplaced finish and qualification for the League Two play-offs but the following year he masterminded the club’s promotion to League One. Having parted company with the Potters in November 2019, Jones returned to Kenilworth Road after 16 months away as replacement for Graeme Jones, with the squad starting training in preparation for the final nine games of the Championship season following the easing of the Covid-19 lockdown. With four wins and four draws from those matches, Jones oversaw The Great Escape to maintain the club’s second tier status.

•F ull-back Amari’i Bell recently became the 57th Luton Town player to represent his country in a full international match. He played in the Gold Cup for Jamaica - the 18th country to be represented by a Hatter. • Luton were the first non-League team to beat Premier League opposition when they defeated Norwich City 1-0 at Carrow Road in the FA Cup 4th Round in 2013. • When comedian Eric Morecambe moved to Harpenden, his son asked to be taken to a football match. Eric tossed a coin to decide whether they would go to Luton or Watford. The rest is history. • Current well-known Hatters fans include former England cricket captain Sir Alastair Cook, who farms in Bedfordshire, singer Cerys Matthews, founding member of Welsh band Catatonia, and Swedish funnyman Olaf Falafel, who won the Best Joke Award at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe. • Ex-Hatters goalkeeper Ron Baynham, who won three caps for his country in the 1950s, celebrated his 92nd birthday in June and is the oldest surviving England international footballer. • Joe Payne’s 10 goals in a 12-0 Luton Town victory against Bristol Rovers in 1936 remains a Football League record that is unlikely to ever be beaten. Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
