With Boro gunning for the play-offs and Mansfield looking at an automatic spot, this thriller lived up to its star billing when the Stags overturned a half-time deficit to claim all three points. Boro certainly put in a shift in the first period. They enjoyed the better of the exchanges and went in at the break with a richly deserved lead when Danny Newton netted two minutes into added time. It was his fourth of the season as he tucked
home from close range. But in the second half it was Mansfield who came alive, Stoke loanee Ryan Sweeney pulling them level on 55 minutes while Tyler Walker then ran the show. He grabbed their second of the game on 77 minutes with a sweet strike which put David Flitcroft’s team ahead.
And the 22-year-old, on loan from Nottingham Forest, went on the seal the win four minutes from the end, securing what was his ninth goal of the season an his second to make it 3-1.

We were very saddened to hear of the passing of Jeff Smith in November.
Jeff first started following Boro in the early 80s taking his son Matthew to games when the club was in the United Counties League. He was a regular supporter both home and away and was there for the FA Cup games in 1998 against
Newcastle, the FA Trophy finals and of course promotion to the league. In later years Jeff started to take his grandson Toby to games too. He was delighted to be presented with a signed shirt at the game against Carlisle in August which was the last game sadly he was able to attend. He was a truly devoted supporter who will be truly missed by everyone at the club. Our deepest sympathy to all of Jeff’s family.
ON THIS DAY: 10 DECEMBER
As the holiday season draws ever closer, today’s is a date in history in which Boro’ have often tended to show signs of early festive cheer. In nine outings on 10 December over the years, we’ve come away with at least something to show for our efforts on six occasions (three wins and three draws).
Of course, that does also mean we’ve three defeats to our name on this date –including our Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area semi-final exit in 2013. But this depends on whether you’d count that as a draw based on the score at full time; a penalty shootout leading to our exit and Swindon Town’s path into the area final. There’s no dispute about the outcome of our most recent appearance on 10 December, however. Blackpool arrived at the Lamex today in 2016 and returned home with three points and a clean sheet. It’s the only time we’ve failed to win on home turf on this date; Long Buckby (1983) and Forest Green Rovers (2005) duly dispatched previously. And we can only assume that Graham Westley liked what he saw when we visited Preston North End on 10 December 2011. Just over one month later, GW departed for Deepdale to become their new manager.
IT’S MANSFIELD TOWN AGAIN…
For a good while in the story of us and the Stags, draws just weren’t a thing between us. Either we’d win or they would – ‘nough said. Up until our first-

ever draw in 2018, the honours were pretty even too; Boro’ winning five and Mansfield with six. But things haven’t quite gone so well for us in recent years. We’ve only added one more win to our tally, while our guests today have taken their win count into double figures. Oh, and we’ve drawn twice more too.
MAGIC MOMENT:
Blue Square Premier – 07 October 2008
ON BOTH SIDES…
Now, here we have a topsy-turvy tussle that was more than worthy of the TV cameras in attendance at the Lamex for a first-ever meeting between us and them. Setanta had picked us out for live coverage and they were rewarded with five goals, late drama, and a red card.
The first half, to be fair, wasn’t the most electric and it only really came to life in stoppage time; Mitchell Cole earning a penalty that was duly converted by Steve Morison. TV replays did suggest, however, it was a slightly dubious call in our favour. There were no complaints from us –but there were from Stags boss Billy McEwan, who was sent to the stands. It all came to life in the second half; the Stags scoring twice in a three-minute spell just before the hour mark to stake a claim for the points. Cole had other ideas; setting off on a superb run that ended with a shot from the edge of the area that found the back of the net. With 10 minutes left on the clock, Michael Bostwick was the lucky recipient of a goalkeeping error; the ball dropped at his feet from Daryl McMahon’s free kick. Boro’ were back in front and soon had a man advantage when Maxime Chanot collected his second yellow card of the match. The Stags missed a golden chance to level it in stoppage time too!
Is it a surprise that Jefferson Louis’ name features on the list of those players to have turned out for both Boro’ and the Stags? After all, it’s not like there are many teams he hasn’t played for. Daley Thompson’s name is also here; coming to Boro’ after a brief spell at Mansfield back in 1994. So, two names you maybe didn’t expect to be mentioned here? There are, however, plenty of others we can namedrop here – many of whom you probably are familiar with. In Boro’s current line-up, Jamie Reid and Danny Rose could maybe tell you a thing or two about life at Field Mill. As, indeed, can gaffer Steve Evans. And we hope all three are primed to get one over their former club here today!
Lucas Akins, Chris Beardsley, Joel Byrom, Michael Brough, Craig Dobson, Lee Howarth, Peter Vincenti, and Tyler Walker all feature on the list too. We’ll also give a nod to Aaron O’Connor, who scored for the Stags against us in October 2008 – before signing for Boro’ in early 2016.
By boroguide.co.ukACADEMY
Good afternoon everyone, What a day for football and hopefully three wins for the Boro faithful. We have Sutton United this morning looking to continue our fine form in the EFL Youth Alliance, then we will all support the Gaffer and his team looking to continue in theirs. Then, of course, England tonight where I’m sure both sets of supporters will hope for the right result. I am pretty confident if we get 3 win then there will be some sore heads within the crowd tomorrow!
Ronnie Henry has done an extremely good job since taking over the reigns as the Interim PDP Lead. Training has been sharp and the players have been able to get a real sense of realism to senior football. Our league form has drastically picked up and we are starting to rise in the table. Ronnie and the team will continue to work hard to ensure over the Christmas period our players remain fit and ready for a 2023 return.
The second half of the season has many exciting twists and turns, we have the Herts Senior Cup competition in early January against Hitchin Town FC which is a competition we cherish and want to progress in, this will be a tough test against an in form Hitchin. The team will continue to aim for a Merit League 1
position and there will be some important decisions to make on our players, which is never an easy time for anyone.
This weekend Tom Farr (Foundation Lead) and Paul Dale (YDP Lead) have arranged some good fixtures as we entertain Arsenal and Colchester. This is something we always aim for when we have no EFL fixture for the 9-15’s. The opportunity to play a higher category club is always a test and one we welcome.
Good luck all and lets hope for a really enjoyable day!
Come on Boro!

STEVENAGE FCW 2 WROXHAM 0O’Brien, Webster (c), Neal, Farmer, Nebbitt, Price, Southby, Shephard, Millen, Makewell, Bellinger
Subs: Swarres, Greenwood, Bodily, Uwaifo, Schofield
Goals: Makewell, Millen Yellow Card: Uwaifo
Goals from Amy Makewell and Kelsey Millen ensured all three points for Stevenage in a comfortable league outing on Sunday. The result meant that Boro kept pace with AFC Sudbury and Needham Market in the chase for league Despite the dominance of Stevenage, chances were at a premium. Going forward, everything came down the right hand side with captain Lucy Webster and Player of the Match Millen at the heart of it. Makewell, who was playing in her 80th match for Stevenage, had the best of the early chances, both of which missed the target. Millen also had a great oneon-one battle with Cyan Fullbrook in the Wroxham goal, which the ‘keeper won this time.
When the first goal finally came, it was from a superb cross by Hannah Nebbitt out on the left. The ball fell kindly for Makewell who got enough contact with the ball to poke it across the line and give Boro the advantage they deserved. Stevenage switched things around at
half time, introducing Susan Uwaifo and Shianne Swarres, the latter of whom was returning from a two-month layoff. Uwaifo thought she had scored the second goal of the game when she was fouled on the edge of the box, only to regain her footing and slide the ball home. The referee however, had other ideas and had already blown his whistle, leaving Becky Shephard to test Fullbrook from the resulting free kick. She did, but the goalkeeper kept it out. Just before the hour, Millen received the ball on the right and lofted a superb effort over Fullbrook’s head, but also the bar. It took fourteen minutes for Millen to perfect it. A marauding run by Emily Schofield put Boro in a strong attacking position. Her ball to Uwaifo was perfect, who in turn held the ball well before sending Millen free on the right. She entered the box and repeated her earlier trick, only this time, the net bulged. The remaining minutes saw Makewell return to the pitch and come close to extending the lead further. Swarres saw an audacious lob in the top corner agonisingly kept out as Fullbrook pushed it against the post and cleared. The crowd even saw the ball surf the crossbar, but there was no third goal. Uwaifo did find herself booked, as did Boro manager Fadi Mazloum, for reasons best known to the referee. It leaves Borough with two massive home league ties before Christmas. Next week, they face fellow title chasers Needham Market, before an even bigger test in Luton Town.

FORM GUIDE
It’s a warm welcome to Mansfield Town this afternoon as the Notts based side come to us in seventh place in the league table. But such a lofty position, the last play-of
spot and two points clear of eight placed Salford, masks a season of real contrasts which has led to some frustration among fans at the One Call Stadium.
Recent form is a case in point, Mansfield winning two of their last three in the league but also falling to a thumping 3-0 reverse at Harrogate.
In between that they narrowly went out of the FA Cup at Sheffield Wednesday and squandered a lead at Goodison Park to exit the EFL Trophy at the hands of Everton U21. With just three league draws from 20 starts so far this campaign, the Stags clearly don’t tie too many matches, they have only won twice in succession on two occasions and haven’t lost two in a row yet so expect a positive outcome today.
LAST 5 SEASONS
MEET THE BOSS:
The Stags announced Nigel Clough as their new manager in November 2020. As a player, he made over 300 league appearances for Nottingham Forest, becoming the second highest scorer in Forest’s history, before moving to Liverpool in 1993.
He also spent time with Manchester City and Burton Albion as a player, in a career that saw him make 14 caps for England.
His managerial career started with nonleague Burton Albion in 1998 where they were crowned champions of the Northern Premier League in his fourth term at the helm.
He moved to Championship outfit Derby County in 2009 and in 2011/12, he led the Rams to their best start to a season in 106 years. He joined Sheffield United in 2013
and they became the first third-tier side to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup since 2001, a run which included victories over Premier League outfits Aston Villa and Fulham. This success led to Clough being named as the FA Cup Manager of the Year. He returned to Burton Albion in 2015, guiding the Brewers to the Championship for the first time in their history.
ONE TO WATCH:
Versatile performer, Lucas Akins, joined the Stags in the January transfer window in 2022. The Grenadian, who played under manager Nigel Clough at Burton Albion, penned a two-and-a-half-year deal at One Call Stadium. He rose through the ranks at hometown club Huddersfield Town before enjoying a brief loan spell at Northwich Victoria.
Stints followed in Scotland with Partick Thistle and Hamilton Academical before Tranmere Rovers captured his signature in 2010. His impressive displays at Prenton Park attracted the interest of Boro, who paid a fee for the 6’1” player in 2012. Akins made his move to Burton in 2014 and went on to play a significant role in the Brewers’ rise up the football pyramid, from League One to the Championship.

Well done you guys.

The details for our away travel to Wimbledon on Saturday December 17th can also be found on our website. It’s an 11:30am departure from The Lamex and costs just £20 for members. LEYTON ORIENT – AWAY
What a cracker of a game this is likely to be. A veritable “six pointer”. Who would miss this one? It’s on Tuesday December 27th and it’s a lunch-time kickoff (12:30pm). So, it’s a SHARP 9:30am
As is tradition, the SA once again provided both resource and (wrapped) presents for the youngsters who were resident in the children’s ward at the Lister Hospital earlier this week. The tradition for the SA to undertake this wholly satisfying and fulfilling activity stems back longer than I can remember. My grateful thanks to the principal organisers – Jacky Berners and Claire Hickey – without whose perseverance, this event simply wouldn’t take place. A big thank you to ‘Boro Bear’ and to the members of Steve Evans squad who took time out to help deliver the gifts to the children.
AND FINALLY…
I should like to take this opportunity to wish all of our supporters, SA members and their families a peaceful and joyous Christmas. It’s been a really great season so far, so I won’t put the mockers on it to pre-empt what might be to come, except to say “more of the same please, Steve”.
We now have three away games (Portsmouth, Wimbledon and Leyton Orient) before our “Battle of the New Towns” derby with Crawley on December 30th. Let’s really get behind our team and have a sensational Christmas and New Year.
