PHIL WALLACE
ood afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Mansfield Town. Well, where to begin. The strong performances at MK Dons and at home to Cambridge on Tuesday night have set the tone for what we need to do going forwards, following a very tough run of results in the league. As an owner, since you cannot change the players mid-window, you have to make the difficult decision as to whether you believe the management can deliver wins. The inquest into why the run of defeats happened in the first place is for another time. First Team Coach Mark Sampson gave us his notice on Friday, which was accepted, and we moved Ronnie Henry up on Monday to fill that gap temporarily. What Ronnie lacks in coaching experience, he makes up for with a winning mentality and I believe we are stronger as a group for that. Alex and I have had a series of conversations and we both know how football works. It is beyond debate that our league results are unacceptable to all of us, and the manner of the last four league defeats made it clear something was very wrong. I think the performances on Saturday and Tuesday showed that there is a new spirit in the camp, and the players know they need to do more - much more - to deliver winning football for the fans. When your back is against the wall in any industry, you need warriors in your camp. Mental as much as physical. I think we saw that stronger mentality over the last two performances, but especially on Tuesday night. There was a change in the way we played, in the way we tackled and in the aggressive way we attacked their goal. It was only 1-0 but it was convincing. These lads obviously know they have let the management
www.stevenagefc.com
down over the past few months – and I suspect the management know they have let the players down. So, we go into today’s game, followed by an FA Cup replay and another home league game with a different, stronger mentality and a clearer picture of what is needed to get wins. This group of players are highly talented, and we should not be at this end of the table. Not only do we have a job to do against Mansfield, but we have a job to do in every successive league game to climb the table. In situations like this, there are only two choices. Support the lads and management vocally and urge them on to win or turn against them. I believe we have turned a corner, that we have learnt a lesson and that we are about to see a team that will excite and entertain you in a winning way. Let’s get behind them, give them a chance and get The Lamex rocking again! Enjoy the game.

HARVEY COSTIN A warm welcome this afternoon goes to our Boro mascot for the game with Mansfield, nine-year-old Harvey Costin. Harvey lives in Wheathampstead and is a pupil at St Helens School in the town. He’s obviously a busy chap as he lists football, singing, swimming and gaming among his hobbies. His favourite player is Bukayo Saka and we hope Harvey and his family have a great time with us today and provide the good luck needed for a vital three points.

tevenage cemented their spot in mid-table with their second consecutive win as they put three past Mansfield. And it was Chris Whelpdale who had the best of the day with a twogoal haul, the first coming after just three minutes when he went through one-on-one after a neat pass from Tom Pett.

The game was almost out of reach just two minutes later when Boro doubled their advantage, this time it was Charlie Lee who stroked the ball home after a Chris Beardsley pass. The Stags did fight back with Lambe and Rhead coming close but Boro held firm and sealed the win with seven minutes left, Whelpdale grabbing his second of the game. DARREN ISTED

BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 13 NOVEMBER Going back through the archives, it hasn’t been often that Boro’ have turned out on 13 November. In total, we’ve only played five times on this date in history. But the good news is that our record up until now is (almost) flawless. So, you can only hope that the weight of history plays into the hands of Revs and the boys against Mansfield Town today. The highlight is undoubtedly the sixgoal shellacking we handed out to poor Wivenhoe Town on 13 November 1993. It was impossible for that Boro’ team to net six times in one game and Martin Gittings not to be involved. And that’s just one case in point from a season in which Gitts scored 40 times; three of them coming on this date against the Dragons. Unlike last week, Boro’ secured their passage through to FA Cup Round Two on this date in 2004. Not that we had it all that easy, however. Unlike last week (again), our hosts sat below us in the pyramid; Billericay Town our destination. We had Ritchie Hanlon to thank for the decisive goal, but had to do it a man light after Jason Goodliffe was sent off. Boro’ made it five league matches without defeat on this date in 1982; Delvin Stevens and Ronnie Lear on target in our two-goal home win at the expense of Holbeach United. Little did we know at the time that it was the last
16
time until the New Year (15 January 1983) that we’d claim three United Counties League Premier Division points. (BoroGuide is still missing two names from the teamsheet that day – can you help fill in the blanks?) The only blemish, if you can call it that, came in our most recent outing on this day; a 2010 League Two match at home to Shrewsbury Town. Chris Holroyd added another goal to his impressive haul while with us on loan to give us the lead; capping a dominant first-half display. But a lacklustre second half let the Shrews back in to earn a share of the spoils. 1982 Stevenage Borough 2-0 Holbeach United, United Counties League Premier Division (Stevens, Lear) 1984 Stevenage Borough 4-2 Boreham Wood, Hitachi Cup R2 (Beech, Armsby 2, Tyler) 1993 Stevenage Borough 6-0 Wivenhoe Town, Diadora League Premier Division (Gittings 3, Graham, Debnam, OG) 2004 Billericay Town 0-1 Stevenage Borough, FA Cup R1 (Hanlon) 2010 Stevenage 1-1 Shrewsbury Town, npower League Two (Holroyd)
YOU AGAIN? MANSFIELD TOWN Our struggles in recent seasons have given our opponents the chance to improve their head-to-head record
Stevenage FC v Mansfield Town
against us. Mansfield Town are no different; Boro’ failing to score against the Stags in each of our last three encounters going back to the start of the 2019-20 season. But you can even argue that our woes against the Nottinghamshire side are nothing new; covering our entire time together in the Football League now stretching back eight successive seasons. Here’s the context. The first four of our 17 meetings to date with the Stags came in the Blue Square Premier. We won three – scoring three times in each of them. And we carried that form forward to September 2014 when we played them for the first time in League Two; Boro’ winning 3-0 at the Lamex. For some reason, however, that’s where the tables started to turn. We’ve only won three of our past 13 fixtures. And it’s the key reason why we’ve now lost more than we’ve won against them. After that September 2014 win, we lost three on the bounce – before a 2-1 win at Field Mill in October 2016
www.stevenagefc.com
put a halt to that dismal run. Not that it sparked a revival of our fortunes. We then went four meetings without a win; a 1-1 draw at home in April 2018 the only ‘highlight’ in that run (and the first time in 12 encounters that the spoils were shared!). It took another 2-1 win at Field Mill in the latter stages of the 2018-9 campaign to stop the Stags having it all their own way. But we’ve again reverted to type; currently three without a win – though that includes two goalless draws. So, it’s not a total wipeout. The concern is that, however, it took us three and then four games to temporarily break the Stags’ hold on us. Can we nip it in the bud after three again here – or are we now going to have to wait until five? We’ll know one way or the other this afternoon.

ACADEMY
G
ood Afternoon all, Good luck to the staff and players in today’s fixture with Mansfield. Fingers crossed we can continue from Tuesday’s victory and earn some valuable points. Come on Boro! There have been some changes within the academy and there will be further changes to the staffing structure. As our Academy Manager Robbie O’Keefe stated in his last programme notes, I have taken up the position of Academy Operations Manager. This is a slightly different role to practical U18’s Lead Coach that I previously held. I have had such a good 4 and half years leading the U18’s. I have seen many players come and go, progress into the first team or earn careers at other clubs or even in different industries. I have been proud of the work that went on in that phase. I enjoyed it even more having Ronnie Henry with me every day for the last 2 years. What a character and the boys have benefited hugely from it. Naturally, I will continue to support all
our players in the best way possible, but I now look forward to working closer with Robbie on the running of the academy and Alex Tunbridge our CEO. This week we have had 3 practical interviews for the U18’s lead Coach and an appointment will hopefully be made in the coming days. Recently, we played Brantham Athletic in the FA Youth Cup R1 and came away with a 4-2 victory and will now host Sutton United in the next round. Your support would be greatly appreciated. Goals from Max Bustamante and Finlay Johnson’s hat trick on the night saw us continue our journey to round 2. We then faced a tough Northampton Town side and goals from Jaden Oguawazor, Teddy Stevenson and Theo Alexandrou saw us come away with a good 3-1 victory. We were then invited to play Arsenal FC U17 and narrowly lost 4-3 in a tight contest, and despite being 3-1 down showed the resilience we look for to keep going. This is further evidence of the progression we as an academy have made over recent years to be able to compete with Premier League opposition.

WOMEN Jodie Bellinger Forward
Jodie, you recently signed for Stevenage FCW how have you settled in so far? Yeah, really well – the girls and coaches have been so lovely and welcoming, so I can’t really ask for any more than that. It’s always nerve wracking going to a new team. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I’m 21, I started off at Luton Town and then went to Enfield. I’ve always played an attacking role – either on the wing or as a striker. I’ve had ACL surgery if you want to know that! It’s always interesting!
How would you describe yourself as a player? I’ve always had an attacking mindset – I’ve wanted to score goals and just get up forward. I’ve never seen myself as a defender, not at 5ft2 either!!
You’re already familiar with some of the squad here at Stevenage – was that a deciding factor in you coming here? Yeah, 100%. I’m actually quite shy believe it or not! Going into a new team I found it so scary but knowing people there made it so much easier.
With the Vitality Women’s FA Cup first round proper taking place this weekend, how important is a good cup run for the team? It’s massive! I think it will give us such a confidence boost to everyone and ups the moral for the team. What are your thoughts on facing Herts Vipers in the cup on Sunday? It’s always nice getting a local team – we’ll be playing at our home ground and training ground so it’s definitely an advantage – it should be good. What are your ambitions for the rest of the season? Score a lot of goals! I took a break from football and just trying to find the love for it again. So far, it’s made me love it again.

expected to get his feet under the table with his first full season at the One Call Stadium, the Stags have been dogged by injuries to key players and like Boro unable to turn draws into wins. Form has ominously looked to be turning of late however and after a 2-0 win at home to Tranmere (amazingly their first success in any competition since August 14) Mansfield followed that up last week with a 1-0 triumph at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light in the FA Cup.
DID YOU KNOW?
• Mansfield’s One Call Stadium is the oldest ground in the Football League to host football, dating back to 1861, although there are suggestions the sport was played there in 1850 • Mansfield were the first team to win a penalty shoot-out at the old Wembley Stadium when their 1987 Freight-Rover Trophy final with Bristol City ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time • The Stags have spent just one season in the second tier of the Football League, and although they finished bottom they did draw both home and away against promoted Tottenham Hotspur
Stevenage FC v Mansfield Town
THE BOSS The Stags announced Nigel Clough as their new manager in November 2020. He joined after spells in charge of Derby County, Sheffield United and Burton Albion. As a player, he made over 300 league appearances for Nottingham Forest, becoming the second highest scorer in Forest’s history, before moving to Liverpool in 1993. He also spent time with Manchester City and Burton Albion as a player, in a career that saw him make 14 caps for England. His managerial career started with non-league Burton Albion in 1998. Burton were on course to earn promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history in the 2008/09 season, as he led them to the top of the Conference table, which included a run of 11 straight victories along the way. He moved to Championship outfit Derby County in 2009, leaving a table-topping Burton side who would eventually go on to secure their Football League status in that season. In 2011/12, he led the Rams to their best start to a season in 106 years, as they began their campaign with four victories from four. He joined Sheffield United in 2013, and despite the Blades sitting in the relegation zone when he took charge, they ended the campaign seventh in League One. Clough returned to Burton Albion in 2015, guiding the Brewers to the Championship for the first time in their history.
ONE TO WATCH The Stags fought off competition to sign forward Rhys Oates in July 2021. Oates, who can play up front or out wide, fired in 18 goals last season as Hartlepool won promotion to Sky Bet League Two. Starting his career as a youngster at Barnsley, the 26-year-old moved permanently away from Barnsley in 2015, signing for Hartlepool United. He made over 100 appearances for the Pools over three seasons, before signing for Morecambe in 2018. Oates joined the Stags on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Hartlepool and hit the winner in their 1-0 FA Cup upset win at Sunderland last Saturday.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS MANSFIELD On behalf of the SA, I should like to welcome the players, the officials, and most of all the supporters of The Stags to The Lamex this afternoon. I’m looking forward to seeing Nigel Clough and his side again – a good game virtually guaranteed.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY - TO BROADHALL WAY A tad belated perhaps, but the ground we love and known as The Lamex has recently turned 60 years old. Stevenage Town’s 1st XI played their very first competitive game on our now hallowed turf on Saturday August 26th 1961. Back then, it was actually known as the Monkswood Ground and Stevenage beat Ware in the Delphian League 3-1, with our goals coming from Dave Allison and his name-sake Len Allison. The first competitive game at the new ground actually occurred a week previously on August 19th when Stevenage Town Reserves took on Edmonton Reserves in a league fixture. Although Stevenage won this game 3-1, the occasion was marred by an injury to our Tony McCullagh. He was carried off in the 2nd half with a badly gashed knee, requiring five stitches in hospital. The new playing surface was littered with fragments of flint! Irrespective, Tony goes down in history as being the very first player to score on this most sacred ground. If anyone attended either of these games, then I’d love to hear from you. Contact me at Lloyd@sfcsa.co.uk
50-50 TICKETS My personal, grateful thanks to all the

members of the SA committee who have stepped into the breech to run the 50/50 raffle, since the departure of Jenny and the temporary absence of Jackie. It’s been something of a learning curve for all concerned, but we’re up and running – and having fun along the way! The photo today depicts a youthful and energetic ticket seller hard at work at one of our recent games (also known to his close friends as Geoff Gibbs).
INTER-CITY BORO Our next sojourn sees us sampling the delights of Rochdale on Tuesday November 23rd and Tranmere on the following Saturday (27th). For Rochdale it’s a 3:00pm departure time and for Tranmere it’s a 9:00am departure. Cost for each bus is £35 for members and £40 for non-members. Get thee there with Boro the Bear.
SA AGM Many thanks to those hardy souls who ventured out into a cold, October night to attend the Supporters’ Association AGM recently. Held for the first time in the ultramodern “76” lounge, our guest speakers (Alex Tunbridge, Joe Goode and Steve Green) did us proud with their helpful, informative and sometimes humorous anecdotes of the current situation of club affairs - from their perspective. I think I speak for us all when I say it was a most enjoyable evening. LLOYD BRISCOE Chair - Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
