THE CHAIRMAN

PHIL WALLACE

W

elcome to The Lamex today and a warm welcome to the players, management, officials and supporters of MK Dons. This FA Cup replay should be an exciting affair. We played well in the last game at Stadium MK and were unlucky not to win the tie. But we now get another bite and, although MK will no doubt be favourites again, the FA Cup is all about magic and upsets. Players feel that too, they know what is on the line. Yeovil away will be tough for either side but the Third Round is within touching distance of that round and, with it, a chance to create unforgettable memories that last forever. So, no motivation will be required this evening and a cracking cup tie should be in prospect. By now most will know that, sadly, we parted company with Alex Revell and Dean Wilkins on Sunday. I say sadly because we have all worked towards a vision of how we wanted our Club to be, but it has not worked out for us. Rarely do you meet a person like Revs, and it was a pleasure and privilege to work with him. We all know football is a savage business and we all know how it works, but that does not make it any easier when people lose their jobs, especially when it is not from a lack of effort or dedication. But something has not been right as seven points from the last twelve games proves, so we got to the point where a change of approach and people was essential. There is no ideal time to make this decision and nobody outside the circle knows what is going on within it. Football careers can change in a heartbeat – balls hit the post and go in instead of coming out, confidence is restored, and long winning runs come into play. I cannot count how

www.stevenagefc.com

many times I have seen that in my 30 years owning football clubs. So, now we are at a crossroad. The next step is crucial for us, and we need experience in the management team we employ next. We have the squad that Revs and Dean wanted, a technically gifted squad but with perhaps some aspects missing, otherwise past results would have been better. The dressing room is solid and packed full of good characters and great professionals. Something for a new gaffer to build upon between now and the end of December. The January window will provide the opportunity to strengthen, and we are able to provide funds for that. Academy Manager Robbie O’Keefe will take the game for us today and my thanks to him for stepping in at such short notice. This game is crucial for both clubs so let’s hear you today. Get behind the lads and let’s see if we can get a place in the Second Round. Enjoy the match!

et’s go back almost 20 years to an FA Cup clash with some parallels to today. We are once again in First round action and again Boro are at home, in this instance it’s not a reply but at the first time of asking against Dr Martens Premier League side Hastings United. Boro went into the game in relegation trouble, under Wayne Turner they

hadn’t won since August and the cup brought some relief thanks to this win. It was a goal from Richard Howell on five minutes which proved the difference, the Boro man heading home after a Jude Stirling cross. Hastings did push Boro hard but the home side held firm - almost doubling their lead when Michael Blackwood hit the woodwork late on. DARREN ISTED

BORO

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 16 NOVEMBER Now, there’s one game played on this date in history that sticks out like a sore thumb here; Boro’ travelling to MK Dons on 16 November 2010 for an FA Cup R1 replay. A stoppage time Darius Charles equaliser took the tie into extra time - a pivotal moment, given Boro’ went onto win 7-6 on penalties that evening. Are we going to see a little bit of history repeating here – even if the venues are in reverse? That sense of deja vu shouldn’t stop us from looking at Boro’s other endeavours on this date, however. And it’s broadly good news, with Boro’ at least undefeated in six out of the eight previous outings on 16 November. It’s also perhaps no surprise that we’ve been on FA Cup R1 duty on this date. After all, it is that time of the year. Boro’ can take heart from the fact that we’ve never lost an FA Cup R1 tie so far. Our 1996 home clash versus Hayes was not quite the result we were looking for; Neil Catlin and Barry Hayles scoring in a 2-2 draw that sent us down to Church Road for a replay. But Richard Howell’s goal did take us past Hastings United on this date in 2002. Away from the FA Cup, our first two outings on this day were in the Eastern Floodlit League. The first (in 1981) was also one of many cup clashes we’ve had Saffron Walden Town (20!) – but didn’t go in our favour, despite Peter Gittings’

14

two goals. We made amends a year later with a win up the road at Royston Town, to be fair. That defeat to Saffron Walden Town is actually one of the two bookends to our record on this date in history so far. The most recent time we’ve been called into action on 16 November, well, saw us fail to turn up. Rotherham United had no real troubles in returning home with the three points in 2013; the Millers easing to a three-goal victory. Can Boro’ add yet another positive FA Cup result to this date in history? 1981 Stevenage Borough 2-3 Saffron Walden Town, Eastern Floodlit League (P Gittings 2) 1982 Royston Town 2-3 Stevenage Borough, Eastern Floodlit League (Lear 2, Cox)* 1991 Stevenage Borough 2-0 Barking, Diadora League Division One (M Gittings, Bowgett) 1994 Dagenham & Redbridge 0-1 Stevenage Borough, GM Vauxhall Conference (Dillon) 1996 Stevenage Borough 2-2 Hayes, FA Cup R1 (Catlin, Hayles) 2002 Stevenage Borough 1-0 Hastings United, FA Cup R1 (Howell) 2010 MK Dons 1-1 Stevenage, FA Cup R1 (Charles; Stevenage win 7-6 on penalties) 2013 Stevenage 0-3 Rotherham United, Sky Bet League One

(*BoroGuide would very much like to hear from anyone who can help us complete our missing line-up for that game)

YOU AGAIN? MK DONS As our look back on this day has shown, us against MK Dons in an FA Cup Round One replay is nothing new on this day in history. And the original tie at stadium:MK that brought us here tonight fell exactly 11 years since we first met them. It’s a funny old game, innit? Since 6 November 2011, we’ve gone on to accumulate 15 previous meetings against the Dons – including our 2-2 draw a week-and-a-half ago. We have five victories to our name so far, while the Dons have clocked up seven. And it’s fair to say we’ve had some memorable encounters along the way – for better and for worse. After that FA Cup meeting during the 2010-1 campaign, Boro’ met the Dons on equal terms the following season as we went up to League One. The Dons got the better of us at their place early on in the campaign, but we claimed our own victory in January 2012 as Mark Roberts signed off his temporary spell as gaffer with an entertaining 4-2 midweek win. Boro’ hit the road first again the following season; Lucas Akins sealing a 1-0 win at stadium:MK. But that’s when things started going in their favour. We were swept aside 2-0 at the Lamex late on in the season, while our next visit to theirs (September 2013) saw us collapse to a 4-1 defeat. It’s the biggest win either of us have managed in our encounters.

www.stevenagefc.com

Our home Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Round Two win less than two weeks later didn’t quite make amends for that. And we’d happily swap it for the events of our home league match in March 2014. As Boro’ slid towards relegation, we got ourselves into a two-goal lead against the Dons; eyeing the win that’d give us a real lift in our battle for survival. But we imploded; conceding three goals in the last 10 minutes to lose 3-2. What could have been a shot in the arm for our hopes of staying in League One became a huge nail in the coffin. We’ve only met twice more in the league since 2014; 2018-9 a season in which the Dons came down from the division above. Boro’ won 3-2 at home and drew 1-1 away to take four points off them that term. But they would be the team who went up that season as we finished agonisingly short of the playoff places. Apart from that, the Football League Trophy (with its various sponsors) has accounted for a fair few competitive meetings between the two sides. Checkatrade, Leasing. com, or Papa John’s – we’ve had no success in any of the past three. Our October 2017 tie was as good as it got; a 0-0 draw that ended with the Dons winning on penalties. Let’s hope that, if it comes to it tonight, it’s the outcome of 2010 that gets repeated.

A

busy week for the Club ahead with not only the First Team’s FA Cup replay, but also tomorrow sees our U18 side take on Sutton United in the Second Round of the FA Youth Cup. The FA Youth Cup always has that bit of magic just like the FA Cup and our young scholars and staff always look forward to these games. As we say to them regularly, you cannot build your season around these games but similarly we cannot ignore the fact they mean so much. Having travelled to East Anglia in the previous round to take on Brantham, the evening started with all the hallmarks of a cup shock. Driving rain, a difficult pitch, floodlight failure combined with an early goal against set the time for the evening - or so you would think. Barely ten minutes later we were down to ten men following the dismissal of Alex Aitken in goal. 15-year-old Elyh Harrison came on and immediately made an impression with a

magnificent save from the resulting free kick. All credit to our young players who under the constant guidance of Ronnie Henry and Jimmy Martin dominated the ball and showed great patience in their build up play. We went into the break 2-1 up courtesy of goals from Max Bustamante and Finlay Johnson, before Fin went on to complete his hat trick as we ran out comfortable 4-2 winners. At no point in the game did we look nervous or not in control and it was testament to the players that the opposition were continually down with cramp in the latter stages of the game, as despite being down to ten we enjoyed the vast majority of possession. So, on to Sutton the game will be a real test as they are enjoying their first season in the EFL U18 games programme and our boys will need to be at their absolute best to progress to the Third Round and possible Premier League opposition. WOMEN Shianne Swarres Midfielder

Shi, you’ve recently signed for Stevenage FCW, how have you settled in so far? Really well, I’m a pretty shy person so moving to a new club is quite daunting! The girls, coaching staff and everyone have been really welcoming, so that’s been really helpful. What was it about Stevenage that made you want to sign? I think Fadi [First Team Manager] played an important role in it. I was quite happy where I was at Bedford and didn’t really think about moving teams to a higher level but after speaking to Fadi, I kind of knew I had to take that next step. Having him as manager at Bedford, I learnt a lot so having him here has made it a bit easier. It’s nice to have a face I knew as well.

I do like to pass the ball and I do like a good shot too.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself? I’m 24, I was born in Zimbabwe and moved to Ireland when I was 4. I started playing football when I was 10 with a boys team; I played for various clubs around Ireland. I got the chance to play in the Irish Women’s National League but then moved to England.

How pleasing is it to settle in so quickly after putting in some player of the match performances in recent weeks? It’s nice to know that I’ve put in some good performances. I think a lot of credit goes to the players and coaches for helping me settle just that little but quickly. They’ve been great and really welcomed me; making me feel part of the team.

How would you describe yourself as a footballer? It’s a tough one – I don’t like talking about myself! I find it quite hard to be fair! I think I’m quite strong on the ball,

What are your own personal goals for the rest of the season? I’ve got 2 goals in 2, so hoping to keep those goals coming in and hopefully improve as a player too.

But the Bucks side have seen some mixed spells of form this campaign, and it was one which began with a 5-0 thumping at the hands of Championship side Bournemouth in the EFL Cup.

Two wins and two draws in their first five league games saw MK get off to a steady start before three successive wins in September, including victories over Wycombe, Gillingham and Portsmouth, propelled them up the table. MK had a poor October with three defeats and just one league win seeing them lose ground, but after Boro held them in the Cup, they handed out a 4-1 thumping to Cambridge last weekend.

• Club captain Dean Lewington holds the current record for the most career league appearances by any EFL player at one club. Having started as a Wimbledon player in 2003, he has surpassed 800 appearances all told and even held the role of interim manager at Stadium MK • Former Boro man Richard Pacquette scored the Dons first League Trophy goal when he netted against Brentford in 2004

THE BOSS Liam Manning was appointed in August 2021, becoming MK Dons’ first ever Head Coach. Manning, who played for Ipswich Town and Icelandic side Selfoss during his playing career, began coaching in 2006 with the Tractor Boys where he progressed from head coach of the Under-13s to the club’s Lead Youth Development Coach. In December 2015, he joined West Ham United, initially as their assistant Academy manager before serving as Head of Coaching and, later, taking charge of their Under-23s. In April 2019, Manning joined the City Football Group and was named Director of Coaching for the New York City Academy although he was quickly promoted to Academy Director. During his short time in the US, Manning led NYCFC to a second consecutive U.S. Soccer Development Academy Under-19 National Championship.

ONE TO WATCH Ok, perhaps this is one we should have watched! Max Watters grabbed the 76th minute equaliser against Boro and after missing the start of the campaign through injury the Cardiff loanee has made an impact at Stadium MK. He has scored at least one in each of his last four games and grabbed a brace against Cambridge on Saturday. The striker enjoyed a stunning 2020/21 campaign, scoring 16 goals in just 19 appearances for Crawley Town and earning a move to South Wales.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS WELCOME On behalf of the Stevenage Supporters’ Association, I bid welcome to the Milton Keynes Dons officials, players - and most of all to their supporters who have made the journey to Stevenage this evening.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY As we do every year, the SA laid a wreath on behalf of its members at the War Memorial in the High Street on Sunday. In particular, we remember Owen Abbiss, Herbert Day and Harry Ward, former players of Stevenage Town FC who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the world wars.

DID YOU KNOW? That the stadium we know and love as The Lamex is 60 years old? But, I’ll bet that you didn’t know that back in 1961, it was only ever meant to be a temporary stadium, which may account for the poor, stone-riddled state of the pitch and its ineffective drainage at the time. The owners (Stevenage Development Corporation) had plans to build a “proper” stadium just to the south of what was then known as the ‘Water Pollution” research site on Monkswood Way. We would recognise that site today as the Roaring Meg Retail Park.

SA AWAY DAY Tuesday November 23rd, and we’re off to Rochdale, departing The Lamex at 3:00pm. Then on Saturday November 27th, Tranmere Rovers will be our hosts and departure time for this bus is 09:00am. Costs for each trip is £35 for SA members and £40 for non-members.

You can either CLICK HERE to book online or phone John Carroll on 01438 814285 between 6 and 9pm.

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION (FSA) The FSA’s AGM this year will be held on November 19th. On this occasion, it’s an on-line event commencing at 6:30pm. For further information, details CLICK HERE
