VOTE FOR YOUR GCIS PLAYER OF THE MONTH Stevenage supporters can now vote for their GCIS (UK) Ltd Player of the Month Award for January 2021. The month saw Stevenage pick up eight points, the Club’s best monthly total this season with wins over Scunthorpe and Grimsby, in addition to draws against Tranmere and Colchester. Stevenage also performed valiantly despite defeat against the Championship’s Swansea City in the Emirates FA Cup Third Round. Our shortlist for the January Player of the Month is as follows: Terence Vancooten: Nominated for the second straight month, Vancooten has continued his impressive form at the heart of defence, which has seen him be ranked 17th out of all League Two players in the WhoScored statistical player ratings.
www.stevenagefc.com
Luther James-Wildin: His second nomination this season, James-Wildin has been a consistent performer down the right hand side of the team, culminating in his stand-out assist for Matty Stevens’ late winner at Grimsby. Charlie Carter: Alongside Vancooten, Carter is also nominated for the second straight month after showing his versatility, energy and quality, highlighted with his two-goal haul in the win against Scunthorpe. Elliott List: Winner of the September Player of the Month, List has been back to his best in January, scoring twice, away at Exeter City and Grimsby. To cast your vote for the GCIS Player of the Month, click here and remember, the vote closes on Monday 8th February at 3pm.

Despite peppering the Exeter goal during the first half of Tuesday’s game, it was Exeter that took the lead and eventually took home the points in a 1-0 win for the away side as Boro failed to find a way through a resilient Grecians defence.

ad times. Bad times indeed. For some the direct link to the past couple of seasons goes back five years to 2015-2016 season. Exactly five years ago today Darren Sarll took over as caretaker after the sacking of Teddy Sheringham with Boro flirting dangerously just eight points away from the relegation places. The Teddy experiment had ended but

as he confirmed afterwards, there was to be no fairytale for Sarll as a Matt Harrold goal just a minute from the break clinched all three points. This came after Jones had already saved Boro following a Pat Hoban effort. Tom Pett and Jon Ashton both came close to a leveller but it was not to be and Boro stretched their win less run to nine games in front of a crowd of 2,639. DARREN ISTED

HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 06 FEBRUARY It’s happening again! Just a few days ago on 2 February, we played Exeter City for the second time on the same date in history – albeit 13 years apart. This time, it’s Morecambe’s turn; Boro’ up against the Shrimps for the second time on 6 February – 14 years apart. And we’ll take a little bit of history repeating itself if it’s on offer too. In our FA Trophy Third Round replay back in 2008, we came out on top 3-0 against our friends in the North. It did take extra time, however. Sadly, that was more the exception than the norm on this particular date. Shaun Marshall bagged the winner in 1993 as we beat Chesham United for the second time in a week. Usually, however, this is a bad day in front of goal for us. With those two wins, we’ve played seven games in total on this date. In each of the other five, we’ve failed to score a single goal. The only time that didn’t cost us was an FA Trophy Fourth Round tie at high-flying Cheltenham Town back in 1999; a goalless draw bringing us back to Broadhall Way for a replay we’d ultimately lose on penalties. Even in our Blue Square Premier title-winning campaign, 6 February wasn’t a date that would be kind to us. Tamworth defeated us by a single goal at the Lamb Ground; helped by red cards for Ronnie Henry and Darren Murphy. That’s the same scoreline that allowed both Potton United (1982) and Crawley Town (2016) to leave Broadhall Way with all three points too. They may have been two very different eras, but the outcome was the same. The only other match we’ve played on this date was in 1988. Boro’ lost 2-0 at Leatherhead in what would be our
14
third of seven straight league defeats; a run in which we only scored once. And you thought things were bad right now…? 1982 Stevenage Borough 0-1 Potton United, United Counties League Premier Division 1988 Leatherhead 2-0 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division One 1993 Stevenage Borough 1-0 Chesham United, Diadora League Premier Division 1999 Cheltenham Town 0-0 Stevenage Borough, FA Trophy Round Four 2007 Stevenage Borough 3-0 Morecambe, FA Trophy Round Three 2010 Tamworth 1-0 Stevenage Borough, Blue Square Premier 2016 Stevenage 0-1 Crawley Town, Sky Bet League Two
YOU AGAIN?: MORECAMBE How long have you got? The bottom line is that our guests this afternoon have long since overtaken Woking as the side we’ve played most times in our history. The current count is 42 and the Cards
Stevenage FC v Morecambe FC
won’t be closing the gap any time soon. Looking at the league table, however, the Shrimps could be hitting the pause button on that record if they can gain promotion. But it’s not something for us to fret about now. Based on our current headto-head record, we still hold the balance of power between the two; winning 20 and drawing 13 of our previous encounters. For the first of those, we’d have to go back nearly quarter of a century where both our 1995-6 league games were crammed into the month of April. It didn’t start all that well, with Boro’ losing 1-0 at Christie Park. But our record soon improved over the following years. It’s impossible to go through our entire history with our guests without maybe claiming some column inches back from the chairman’s words. So, we’ll have to be selective with our memories. So, let’s go with our FA Trophy Semi Final duel to start with; John Hamsher’s late penalty giving us a first leg lead that we brought back to Broadhall Way and built on as Sam McMahon and DJ Campbell’s
www.stevenagefc.com
goals secured our place in the FA Trophy final. Or how about the 2006-7 season when both league fixtures ended 3-3? Moro’ announced his arrival with a hattrick in the first of those away from home. On the subject of hat-tricks, there was also Chris Whelpdale’s trio in a 4-3 home win against the Shrimps in 2015. It’s a fixture that hasn’t been short of drama over the years. While matters on the pitch haven’t been quite as eventful in recent times, there were still some notable moments. We come into this off the back of a six-game unbeaten run against Morecambe. It includes a January 2018 draw at the Globe, where Ronnie Henry set our club appearance record and was almost upstaged by Fraser Franks’ late spectacular equaliser. And there’s January 2019’s win at their place where Luke Wilkinson scored the winner in the 94th minute. If there’s to be yet another dramatic chapter in our story with the Shrimps, let’s hope its the Boro’ who’ll be writing it…

FOUNDATION CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH WEEK 2021 - EXPRESS YOURSELF This week we are talking about Children’s Mental Health, as from 1-7 February 2021 schools, youth groups, organisations and individuals across the UK will take part in Children’s Mental Health Week. This year’s theme is Express Yourself. Expressing yourself is about finding ways to share feelings, thoughts, or ideas, through creativity. This could be through art, music, writing and poetry, dance and drama, photography and film, and doing activities that make you feel good. It’s important to remember that being able to express yourself is not about being the best at something or putting on a performance for others. It is about finding a way to show who you are, and how you see the world, that can help
www.stevenagefc.com
you feel good about yourself. Here at the Foundation, we have a whole range of weekly virtual activities that children and young people can get involved with to help express themselves and feel good, including KS1 and KS2 Schools Quizzes, Community Kitchen cooking sessions and an Under 18’s FIFA Tournament. All the above sessions are free of charge and we welcome new participants to join in each week, with our fun and friendly Foundation staff leading the way. We encourage everyone, children, young people and adults to explore the different ways we can express ourselves and the creative ways that we can share our feelings, our thoughts and our ideas. Keep an eye out on our social media pages for a weekly timetable of activities, or send us an email at community@stevenagefc.com for more details!

WOMEN
Kristal Clarke Winger
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? I am 21, studying International Business at Brunel University. I am a Tottenham fan (and Stevenage obvs). I am big on family time, which is fortunate being locked down with them! WHAT CLUBS HAVE YOU PREVIOUSLY PLAYED FOR? I played for QPR for the majority of my footballing career. I was there for roughly 7 years. The very first team I played for was St Albans City when I was 10. WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL? I am very sociable so if we weren’t in a pandemic, I would normally be seeing my friends. I love shopping and the pandemic has made me worse for it! The postman and every delivery driver and I are on first name basis haha. HOW DO YOU FIND JUGGLING FOOTBALL, TRAINING AND YOUR DAY JOB? I am currently in my final year at university so as you can imagine, it is quite stressful but it is important to find a balance and have that break from uni allowing me to relieve any stress through football. CAN YOU TELL ME WHO YOUR FOOTBALLING IDOL OR ROLE MODEL WAS WHILST GROWING UP AND WHY? I’m not sure why, because I despise Chelsea but my idol growing up was Didier Drogba. He was an unreal player, passionate and I remember when I was
22
Stevenage FC v Morecambe FC
younger used to copy his celebration when I scored. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE FEMALE FOOTBALLER AND WHY? Alex Scott – She is a quality player and changed women’s football, bringing more attention to the game. I like the fact that after retiring from football, she branched out her career into broadcasting, becoming well-respected in her field and one of the best pundits. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHT OR ACHIEVEMENT THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? I was most proud of playing for Hertfordshire County. It was a pivotal moment as it was at this point, I gained confidence in my ability realising I could compete at a high level. IT HAS BEEN A STOP START SEASON SO FAR AND AFTER LAST SEASON BEING DECLARED NULL VOID. HOW DO YOU FEEL THE SEASON HAS GONE FOR YOU PERSONALLY? Joining a new environment, I was excited but nervous. However, everyone has made me feel nothing but welcome. I feel privileged that I have the opportunity to play for Stevenage and once we return, I am sure we will come back stronger than ever. HOW HAVE YOU BEEN KEEPING FIT AND ACTIVE DURING LOCKDOWN? I try to run 5k a day at least 3 days a week. My PT Laura also keeps me in shape giving me tough sessions to complete weekly and our Zoom training sessions every Tuesday and Thursday prepare us for return.
www.stevenagefc.com
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR MATCHES AND WHAT DOES YOUR PRE-MATCH ROUTINE LOOK LIKE? Before a game, I listen to my pre-match album and always make sure I eat a good breakfast. DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE-MATCH SUPERSTITIONS? I do! (I don’t know if I can say this lol) and it’s really silly but my sports bra and under shorts HAVE to match in colour and brand. DO YOU HAVE A GO TO CELEBRATION FOR WHEN YOU SCORE? The iconic Dele Alli celebration. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FOOTBALL TRICK OR SKILL MOVE TO PULL OUT? Nothing is sweeter than a nutmeg. AS WE’RE CURRENTLY IN LOCKDOWN, WHAT TV SERIES ARE YOU CURRENTLY, OR HAVE BEEN, BINGE WATCHING? Netflix has become my best friend this lockdown. I recently binge watched White Gold and I am currently watching How to Get Away with Murder. WHO MAKES YOUR ULTIMATE DREAM TEAM XI [OF FEMALE FOOTBALLERS]? Oh, tough one! Ok. This is a mixture of retired and current players. Hope Solo, Alex Scott, Steph Houghton, Leah Williamson, Lucy Bronze, Jill Scott, Rachel Yankey, Fara Williams, Marta, Alex Morgan, Ellen White.

ACADEMY
ood Afternoon. As always, best of luck to Alex and his staff in this afternoon’s fixture v Morecambe. We were due to play Birmingham City U23s on Thursday but unfortunately the game was postponed and re-arranged. Our next development game is this Saturday where we will have an U17s side face MK Dons in league action and an U19’s squad will go and play Charlton Athletic. Two different but challenging fixtures. We will then travel to face Brentford B on Sunday 14th February 19:00 kick off. I have not broken the news to my girlfriend yet, but football/work come first! On Thursday evening, we offered a further 3 apprenticeships to academy players including to two U15s who have both impressed within the last 18 months. Darnell Bailey and Eliott Champness from the U15s and Theo Alexandrou from our U16 taking the total to 7 new intakes for 2021/22 season. This week has also seen our academy audited from Barnados for our safeguarding. The excellent work that our safeguarding officer Amy Ganderton and Welfare officer Deanne Goring has produced over recent years has put the academy players and staff in a safe, enjoyable and development environment.
www.stevenagefc.com
One key message to come out of the conversations was that our culture and relationship between players and staff were open, safe and supportive. This is something we as an academy pride ourselves in and will continue to develop this even further. During this latest lockdown, the schoolboys (U9-15’s), in line with the schools have not been able to attend training or play games, however our lead phase coaches Jimmy Martin and Jamal Campbell-Ryce have overseen a virtual learning programme. Some of the age group coaches have taken it upon themselves to engage with their young players, getting to know them, challenging them, keeping them active and providing opportunities to engage with one another during this difficult time. Not only have the players been engaged, our Head of Coaching, Ieuan Lewis also delivered a CPD virtual workshop for all part-time and full-time staff on challenging players in different ways. The ideas and openness to try different things was really encouraging and we look forward to welcoming back all staff in due course. Come on boro! CLUB MATTERS Founded in 1920, Morecambe FC played their football in the Lancashire Combination, but despite growing in strength in the Northern Premier League,
an FA Trophy success in 1974 was all they had to show until they entered the Conference in 1995-96, the year which Boro won it for the first time. It took a 2-1 play-off win over Exeter in 2007 (ironically the same year Boro won the FA Trophy) to promote Morecambe to the Football League and since that time they have stayed in the fourth tier, their best finish was fourth in 2010 when they suffered a play-off semi-final defeat. Having played at their Christie Park base since their early days, Morecambe played their last game there in 2010 before moving to the Mazuma Stadium. Morecambe sit in the play-off places

just after the half way stage of this season, a vast improvement on the last campaign. Following a mixed start to the season with three wins, three defeats and two draws, an excellent December saw them win five games out of six played and really push for the upper reaches. Recent form has been a little more mixed once again but the Shrimps are clearly picking up enough points to keep them in the hunt, ominously winning 2-0 at Exeter at the end of January.
THE BOSS Derek Adams is the man at the helm at Morecambe having joined the club in 2019. His playing career saw him appear for Aberdeen, Motherwell and Livingston before ending at Ross County where he then began his managerial stint in 2007. In charge there for seven years in two spells, Adams went on to take over at Plymouth on a four year spell before his move to the Mazuma Stadium.
WATCH OUT FOR Sam Lavelle, son of former Morecambe favourite Ben Lavelle signed for the Shrimps prior to the 2017/18 season. Formally on the books of Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers, the centre half has represented Scotland at youth level. With 25 appearances this season he has scored one goal, making a career total of 114 appearances for the Shrimps.

THE GREAT SAVE You may recall me recently commenting about an organisation called The Great Save, which is intent upon preserving our football heritage. The initiative is supported by the fans’ groups of Cambridge United, Exeter City, Wycombe Wanderers, Maidstone, Watford, Cardiff, Ipswich, Hereford, Plymouth, Watford, Bournemouth, Hearts, Huddersfield, Portsmouth, Wimbledon, Reading and, of course Stevenage SA. Roger Titford, a good friend of mine, is a curator of The Great Save and is canvassing opinion for codifying the significance of football memorabilia. Assuming three grades - by importance and value - the upper tier comprises such things as players contracts, old club passes, documented accounts, minute books, trophies/medals, scrap-books, homemade flags & banners, recorded oral histories, press photographs etc. The middle tier would consist of handbooks, celebratory brochures, clubspecific books, dinner menus, school/ university projects, cigarette cards, coins and stickers etc. The lower tier (least valuable) would be general football magazines/ newspaper cuttings/books, match-day programmes (post 1960), pennants, badges, scarves, shirts and mugs etc. This is a new initiative which is highly
