would like to extend a warm welcome to Jim, his backroom staff, players and everyone connected to Morecambe Football Club. Off the back of two away games in the space of four days, we are delighted to be back at home today. Against Port Vale we deserved to win the game and after conceding early the team showed great character to equalise then grow into the game, dominating the last 30 minutes where a combination of great goalkeeping and lack of a clinical edge cost us bringing three points back home. At Swindon we set up to be compact making sure we were setting up pressing situations at the right moments, looking to use our pace on the counter-attack. We allowed Swindon two big chances in the game and they punished us by taking one of them. We had four key chances ourselves and were not accurate enough to execute. We have to be better in this area, it is as simple as that. In that final moment we need to be accurate. We are getting in good areas with good players in good positions but we need to take advantage of these moments. Defensively we look strong and we look organised, but we have to show that same courage in attack to create and finish our chances. Today we are at home and our mindset has to be to attack the game, get on the front foot, be positive and really go for the game. Last time at the Lamex we picked up the win we all needed. Today we need to recreate the feeling we all had that Saturday. The emotion and intensity we can create, the connection between the players and the fans is Stevenage FC v Morecambe FC

what will make the difference today. As a club we all have a role to play today to give the players everything they need to get the result we need. That is a choice and I know we will all make that choice to really get behind the team. You, our supporters, have been brilliant home and away this season and I can’t underestimate how much that means to everyone. We all know today is an important match and in these moments, it is the strength of the collective that makes the difference. Let’s have a right go today and attack this challenge together. Thank you for your support. www.stevenagefc.com | 5

warm welcome to the directors, officials, players and supporters of Morecambe FC. I hope you enjoy your stay with us and have a safe journey home. Another good performance, albeit with a killer last minute goal to deny us the point we deserved, from the game at Swindon last Thursday after a close draw at Port Vale last Saturday, has seen us take four points from the last three games and start to move up the last six game form table. I think the team spirit and will to win is there for all to see and sooner or later our luck will change. Balls will hit the back of the net instead of going just wide and that will probably coincide with us playing a more decisive style of winning football. We have players coming back from long term injuries now and it’s starting to make a difference. Today is a crucial game for both sides and I hope and expect it to be a tense, exciting encounter which we relish. Personally I love these games where the importance of winning is Stevenage FC v Morecambe FC

crucial to both teams. I can’t wait for the action to begin. I can’t wait to see what our lads are made of when nothing short of full-on commitment to give that little bit more is demanded. The eagerly awaited draw for the FA Cup was made in the week and you’ll all know that we’ve been handed one of the hardest ties of the round. However the FA Cup is all about shocks and I suspect Posh will not be looking forward to playing us, especially now they can see how much we’re improving. Moving on to the new North Stand, you can no doubt all see that the stand and concourse areas underneath are finished, but our safety group can’t allow the public to use the stand until it’s signed off by building control. This is frustrating after we’ve worked so hard but we’ll just have to wait and let due process prevail. Hopefully we’ll get the green light soon. Back to the game - this is an important one. Let’s make sure we’re as one and support the lads to deliver the three points we want. Enjoy the game. www.stevenagefc.com | 7

as it really 25 years ago that Boro welcomed Welling (well it’s better than paying a visit to the ’San Siro’) as their debut season in the Conference looked to be unravelling fast? After a 3-0 thumping of Stafford away on the opening day, Boro failed to win another game in their next five and this was to be another defeat as the poor run continued. Despite fielding such legends as Efe Sodje, Mark Smith, Richard Nugent and Dave Venables, there was to be more disappointment for the crowd of 1,821 as the home side slumped yet again. Even the introduction of Martin Gittings from the bench couldn’t help Boro to the win, it really was one of those days.

ON THIS DAY Saturday October 26, 2002 Grays 1 Stevenage 2 It’s fitting that we have the FA Cup on our minds as our game on this day takes us to 2002 and a visit to the always tricky Grays. This FA Cup 4th qualifying round tie came in a season which had started poorly for Boro, and although it looked to be picking up with a recent 5-1 thumping of Woking, this win was a rare bright spot in a season which was to see managerial change. Back to this match though and it was goals from Robin Trott and Kirk Jackson which proved to be enough in front of a crowd of 520 - and it secured a place in the first round against Hastings United. ACADEMY WELCOME TO TODAY’S GAME AGAINST MORECAMBE FC. On behalf of all the staff, players and supporters at the Academy we want to wish Mark, Alex and the team all the best of luck for the game – our young players will again be watching closely from the stands hoping for a positive performance and well-earned three points. It seems a long time since we gathered at the Lamex to celebrate our Academy Day with around 150 players from across the performance pathway enjoying a thrilling first half display and great result against Grimsby! Those occasions really help to tie our young players into the fabric of the club and your support on the day would no doubt strengthen that bond! (Pictured are the U12 Academy team) The youth team in attendance today will be hoping for some support of their own on November 5 – we will face the winners of Woodford Town v Brentwood Town in the FA Youth Cup first round.

Our young players naturally get excited about opportunities to sample a little bit of the real thing, especially at The Lamex. So playing under lights, in front of a few hundred spectators means they will work hard to be in the hat for future rounds where they (just like our senior side) will dream of a big club in round three! The youth team step into a busy period of games in fairly good form. They are fit, two of our players have started senior club loans at Aylesbury United and Biggleswade FC and the youth team has put in a run of four wins in the last five games. We don’t disguise that results are important here at Stevenage FC, but we always try to ensure that striving to achieve results is never at the detriment of a good performance. This is what we will be aiming to showcase on November 5 and we hope to see a few of you at the game (kick off 7pm). Back to this afternoon, enjoy the game, we’ll be right there to cheer the boys to a big three points!

WOMEN IPSWICH TOWN FC WOMEN 2 STEVENAGE WOMEN 3 WNL PLATE COMPETITION On Sunday we had the long trip away to Ipswich for the WNL Plate competition. Ipswich have only lost one game this season in all competitions so they were in a good run of form. Both teams started out tentatively, Ipswich had the better of the first 20 minutes with the majority of possession. But we were causing them some problems with our pace in the final third and we were rewarded with the first goal to go 1-0 up, Louise Godden with her second strike of the season.

Ipswich continued to dominate possession however and 10 minutes before half time they grabbed 2 goals in quick succession which on the balance of play they probably deserved. We needed to really turn it around in the second half and the players stepped up and did exactly what was asked of them. We equalised through new signing Tamsyn Sibanda, a sweet strike with her left foot brought us level. With minutes left on the clock, Stevenage Women were awarded a free kick about 20 yards out. Erin Pope stepped up and placed the ball into the bottom right hand corner to clinch the game. Stevenage FC v Morecambe FC

SUPPORTERS ASSOCIATION

LATEST NEWS WELCOME It gives me great pleasure to welcome the fans and supporters of Morecambe to the Lamex this afternoon. Stevenage has a long and valued relationship with the Shrimpers fans, and I remember with affection the FA Trophy semi-final games in 2002. An away League match at Christie Park on March 30th followed by the two FA Trophy games meant that we played each other on three consecutive Saturdays. I distinctly recall the majority of our respective supporters being on first name terms with each other by the end of April!

recently been published and proves to be a very worthwhile read for fans and supporters of all clubs. It includes chapters on the progress of the FSA’s governance work, standing campaign, ticket prices and televisions’ impact on match-going supporters. Highly recommended. CLICK HERE to Download it for free.

BORO BUS We have recently had to contend with the problem of our regular bus operator going out of business. This has caused our organiser, John Carroll, some considerable anxiety, especially sourcing a suitable and appropriate alternative provider within our targeted budget. Happily, John has been able to find another company, but regrettably some prices may be amended. So, our away fixture at Scunthorpe next Saturday sees the bus leaving Stevenage at 9.30am. The cost is £20 for adult members (£25 for non-members). Concessions apply. For further information and to book your place on the bus, please contact John on (01438) 814285 – after 6:00pm. The SA reserve the right to adjust fares on the day, subject to the number of fans travelling. Please arrive at The Lamex 30 mins prior to departure.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY As this is the last home programme before Remembrance Sunday, I’d like to inform that the SA will be remembering Herbert Day, Harry Ward and Owen Abbiss – all Stevenage footballers who lost their lives during the world war conflicts. Join us if you can, at the War Memorial in the High Street on Sunday Nov. 10th from 10:30am.

fourth tier for the past 13 seasons. Since that time, they have only finished in the top ten once as they finished fourth and in the play-off spots in 200910 but were beaten 7-2 on aggregate in the semi-final against Dagenham & Redbridge. The Shrimps have not been able to replicate that highest finish in the club’s history almost 10 years ago and were almost relegated in 2016/17 after escaping the dreaded drop by goal difference, sending Barnet down.

LATEST FORM…

THE BASICS… Morecambe are no strangers to teams in Sky Bet League Two. Indeed after Sammy McIlroy led the Club to promotion via the 2007 Conference play-off final after defeating Exeter City 2-1 at Wembley - they have stayed in the

Stuck in another relegation battle this season, the fans are still waiting for their first win at The Globe Arena and are in 23rd place having not witnessed a victory in nine games at the venue in all competitions, picking up three draws. In their last away game, Morecambe were on hand to put a major dent in Colchester’s promotion hopes, after coming away from the JobServe Community Stadium with all three points when Cole Stockton scored the

only goal of the match with a 66th minute strike. They were unable to carry on the form a few days later when they lost 2-0 at home against Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday evening.

THE GAFFER… Jim Bentley has been associated with Morecambe for almost 20 years, having joined the Club in 2002, racking up almost 300 games. The former defender was appointed PlayerManager in 2011, but soon turned his attention to the managerial side and has not played a game since his appointment.

STAR MAN…

KEVIN ELLISON

The star man on show would have been Lewis Alessandra but the striker was sent off after picking up two yellows cards against Forest Green. Kevin Ellison will however be one to watch and has battled with Stevenage on many occasions, having scored in his last two meetings against The Boro. The 40-year-old joined the Club in 2011 and has been a prolific goalscorer at The Globe Arena; he is approaching his century of goals for The Shrimps. Ellison started his career at Southport in 1996, which has expanded over 20 years and has turned out for clubs such as Altrincham, Stockport County, Chester City, Hull, Rotherham United and Bradford City – scoring over 100 goals. by Taylor Catton Stevenage FC v Morecambe FC
