eflecting on the past couple of weeks on the road, there are two topics to discuss. One is the process i.e. the training and how we are working to become a cohesive, competitive team. The other thing is how that turns into results on a Saturday. We were disappointed with the result at Port Vale, and we were very close to getting a deserved positive result at Leyton Orient. We have not necessarily had the result, but I certainly see the process, the work and the clarity in training that I know produces results. We will continue with that. Every opponent is difficult, every opponent has their strengths. We believe by working hard as a team and having real connection on the pitch, that we have an opportunity to be competitive in every single game that we play. We are looking forward to the game against Newport. We are confident in the effect our work on the training ground presented against Leyton Orient in a good performance, and we are looking to repeat that and more on Saturday. We need continuity in all areas including performance and selection, but life is not that easy. We need everybody in the squad. We need more than eleven players, but they still need to produce the continuity of performance as a team. I am demanding from my players that no matter who gets picked, they can produce the same level of performance as a team – like we had last weekend. In terms of players returning from injury, Ben Coker is very close to being back available for selection, and Jake Reeves
is not too far behind him. I do not want to tempt fate as you can never predict a setback, but the pair are close to full recovery. We had a fantastic support at Leyton Orient and in the home games at The Lamex we have had a fantastic energy over the last couple of months. We need to connect with the supporters and them with us, it is a two-way street. The players’ performance generates that kind of energy, and the energy helps the players perform. We are looking forward to being at home and experiencing that support once again.

ood afternoon and welcome to the players and officials of Newport County. The last-minute equaliser at Leyton Orient saw them salvage a point and us drop two points. It is always tough to take in the last few minutes, but the positives were that we were in control for most of the game and, I thought, coasting to a win. It is always better to be glass half full and I believe that game was another step towards winning ways and so I am really looking forward to the home games on Saturday and Tuesday. It would be a very good time to win and start a climb up the form table to achieve our objective of finishing in the top half of the ‘last 23 game’ table. It has been some while since I have been in the UK, and I miss the live games. I watch all our games streamed live but there is nothing that compares to being there, so bring it on! On my return to the UK on Monday the first job was to appoint a new CEO from the short list of two and I am delighted that Dominic Jordan has accepted that position, starting on 28th March. It is always exciting when a new person comes in to lead a team and I am looking forward to helping him where I can. No doubt
www.stevenagefc.com
Dominic will make himself known to many of you and I know he cannot wait to get started. Alex Tunbridge will work his last day with us on Friday 18th but will represent us at the game on Saturday 19th March. As many of you will know, Alex is joining Cambridge United. This is the second time that Alex has worked for us having left to work in the US and then, strangely enough, as CEO at our opponents today Newport County. He steered us through the pandemic making sure that the everincreasing EFL rules and regulations were followed to the letter and being there to manage the community efforts that were so widely acclaimed. He has always been a Boro fan and I hope that will continue. I would like to place on record my thanks for his diligence, hard work and loyalty and wish him well in his new chosen career. Back to the game, we are still missing Ben Coker and Jake Reeves but as a Club we know we are in a fight and the lads are ready to show what they can achieve. Let them know you are behind them and let us move onwards and upwards!

ust over seven years ago Boro had a golden opportunity to bolster their play-off chances as they faced fellow promotion candidates, Newport County, at the Lamex Stadium. The hunger for promotion pushed on Boro as they broke the deadlock within 31 minutes via Charlie Lee’s header; making it his 8th of the season and pushing Newport onto the backfoot. Bira Dembele presented Storey with a golden chance early in the second half, however goalkeeper Chris Day was there to spare his blushes. And in the 67th minute Dembele more than redeemed himself as he continued Stevenage’s trend of headed goals as the Frenchman

doubled the home side’s lead. County did make use of their 10 efforts on goal as Adam Chapman volleyed his attempt into the bottom corner late on, suggesting the contest was not over just yet. The three points became destined for Stevenage when former Wycombe midfielder, Chris Zebroski, received a sending off in the dying moments of the match following a second yellow card, ending the enjoyable contest for all 2,941 fans in attendance. In a game that was tightly contested, with the possession stats only falling in favour to Newport by 51%, Stevenage were more than happy with the result. BORO
HISTORY ON THIS DAY: 19 FEBRUARY As we come to the middle part of March, do we start to consider this to be the start of the business end of season? If so, our 6-2 win at Slough Town on this date in 1996 sent a clear message to our rivals (ahem, Woking) that we had the GM Vauxhall Conference title in our sights regardless of how much of the race we had left to run. Indeed, that crushing win against the Rebels came three days after Boro’ had won 5-2 at Stalybridge Celtic. Goals were not in short supply back then. Fast forward 15 years to 2011 and a title wasn’t in grasp, but an unlikely tilt at the npower League Two playoffs started to emerge. The loss of Scott Laird to a second yellow card didn’t prevent Boro’ coming back from Wycombe Wanderers with a 1-0 win (John Mousinho). Lo and behold, two months later and our remarkable rise kept on going. All in all, 12 March is a productive date in Boro’ history; 10 games yielding five wins and two draws since our first game on this date in 1983 - that being a narrow away win at the expense of Buckingham Town thanks to Wes Atwell. Somehow, we now seem to have fallen into a pattern where we turn up to play on this date every three years (starting in 2013 with defeat to AFC
16
Bournemouth). Wycombe gained their revenge on us in 2016 with a 1-0 win at Adams Park, before Alex Revell and Ilias Chair stopped the rot in our 2-0 home win against Swindon Town three years ago. Two defeats, two wins; that’s how that pattern should go – right? 1983 Buckingham Town 0-1 Stevenage Borough, United Counties League Premier Division (Atwell) 1985 Stevenage Borough 3-4 Stansted, Courage Floodlit League (Armsby 2, Lowe) 1988 Woking 1-1 Stevenage Borough, Vauxhall Opel League Division One (Cumberbatch) 1994 Marlow 0-0 Stevenage Borough, Diadora League Premier Division 1996 Slough Town 2-6 Stevenage Borough, GM Vauxhall Conference (Hayles, Browne 2, Venables, Barrowcliff, Webster) 2001 Stevenage Borough 2-1 Hereford United, Nationwide Conference (Hay, Armstrong) 2011 Wycombe Wanderers 0-1 Stevenage, npower League Two (Mousinho) 2013 Stevenage 0-1 AFC Bournemouth, npower League One 2016 Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 Stevenage, Sky Bet League Two 2019 Stevenage 2-0 Swindon Town, Sky Bet League Two (Revell, Chair)

YOU AGAIN? NEWPORT COUNTY A two-goal loss at Rodney Parade in December 2014 got things off to a bad start with Newport County. But Boro’ then started to take control of the head-to-head fortunes; unbeaten in seven matches, of which five were victories. Yet, the good fortune started to elude us and we’re now looking back on a run of one win in six match-ups. Woe betide us our recent form against the Exiles. Part of our naff goal difference this season owes much to a five-goal drubbing dished out in south Wales at the end of October. Boro’ got the Halloween scares in a day early, although the wider picture shows that we’ve failed to score in three successive matches against the Welsh side now. Our declining fortunes have coincided with the rise of Newport’s, so perhaps it’s no surprise they’ve started to give
www.stevenagefc.com
us a tough time. The last time they visited was October 2020 and it ended up being the first time they’d ever won here at the Lamex. Lots of mini-records like that have fallen by the wayside in recent times, but we can always rebuild. And it hasn’t always been one-way traffic. While a win today would be our first in more than three years, it would put us on seven victories overall, compared to their four. It’s also worth remembering that this is a fixture that isn’t afraid of a late, last-gasp turn of events. So, what does this one have in store? Disappointment, drama, or delight?

WOMEN Stef Paci Midfielder
Stef, finally, a very warm welcome to Stevenage FCW how does it feel to have signed? Thank you! I’m buzzing to finally put pen to paper, it’s been a long time coming. I think I first came over here about a year ago now, it feels great to finally be here and get going. For ‘Boro fans who might not know much about you, can you tell us a little bit about yourself? My name’s Stef Paci, I’m 24, I’ve played for a couple of clubs recently; so this season I started off at London Bees in the tier above, previously I was at Hashtag United where I came over from Crystal Palace. I’m a centre midfielder and I’m looking forward to it. How would you describe yourself as a footballer? I’d probably say I’m hardworking and technical being my main assets. I work hard on and off the pitch and I try to be as positive as I can be. I’ve faced many hurdles in my football journey so far and I bring that with me everywhere I go. I like to be technical on the ball, try to create going forward from a deep lying midfielder.
RESULTS: Stevenage 3-0 Kent Football United Cambridge United P-P Stevenage London Seaward 1-0 Stevenage Norwich City 1-2 Stevenage Stevenage 1-2 Harlow Town
www.stevenagefc.com
You’ve been training with us the last couple of weeks and you played in a pre-season friendly game back in the summer, so why now? I think now is the right time for me, I’ve spoken to Fadi who I’ve known and was around the club last year. Getting to know the girls and knowing what we’ve got in this squad, I’m ready to work hard with the rest of the team and get some points on the board. I think there’s a mutual feeling around the club so I’m ready right now to get going. What was it about Stevenage FCW that made you want to sign? I think it was just the club – as soon as I came back the second time round, I knew that the ability in the squad doesn’t really reflect the results they’ve had so far and they’ve come a long way since the start of the season. It’s clear to see that this is a project that Fadi’s trying to do here and I decided now is the right time. What do you feel you can bring to this team? Just a hardworking player and positivity. I want to do my best to contribute to the rest of the season, get some points on the board and stay in this league – that’s the aim.

FOUNDATION/KS1 WINNER – MILLIE’S STORY – BORO BEAR’S BIG DAY OUT Boro Bear wakes up early and has some yummy Coco Pops and wonders what to do today. He looks out of the window and can see that it’s snowing. He can’t wait to go outside and build a snowman. Boro Bear puts on his wellies, coat and hat and heads to the woods and gathers some sticks for the snowman’s arms. He rolls three huge snowballs for the snowman’s bottom, middle and head. He gives the snowman his hat, pushes in the sticks to his sides and decides to put some lovely make-up on him too. Boro Bear is tired after making the snowman, so he heads home to have some nice soup to keep him warm.
DYLAN’S STORY – BORO BEAR’S BIG DAY OUT Boro Bear woke up on a lovely Saturday morning and went downstairs to watch TV. He sat on the sofa and started to watch the news. The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, was about to make an announcement. “Everybody”, began Boris Johnson. “I have some good news. Lockdown is over!” “Yeah!”, cried Boro Bear, jumping up and down excitedly.

where they will be congratulated on the pitch. They have also won a goody bag full of Stevenage FC merchandise, including a signed Stevenage FC shirt and a certificate! Their stories can be read here:
He puts the television on and watches Stevenage playing football, his favourite! He has had a very busy day so it’s not long before Boro Bear falls asleep.
He decided that he wanted to celebrate by doing something fun – like having a big day out. Boro Bear made a list of fun things he could do; then, he thought of going on holiday somewhere nice. “I know!”, said Boro Bear. “I’m going to go on holiday to Portugal!” Boro Bear packed all his things and then he took a taxi to the airport. The flight from London to Portugal took two hours. Finally, he was there. Boro Bear wandered around, wondering what to do.
Stevenage FC v Newport County AFC
Then he remembered that he’d packed his football in his suitcase! He got out his football and started kicking the ball around. After about ten minutes of kicking the ball around, he noticed that a man in a football kit was heading his way! And he looked awfully familiar… Then, as soon as the man stepped out of the shadows, Boro Bear instantly recognised him. It was his favourite football player ever – Cristiano Ronaldo! “Hey there!”, said Ronaldo. “You like football, don’t you?” “Yes, I love football!”, cried Boro Bear. Ronaldo stopped for a second. He recognised Boro Bear. “Hey! I know you! You’re Boro Bear, the mascot for Stevenage! I love you!”, Ronaldo replied. “That’s right! It’s me” Ronaldo looked at Boro Bear. “Do you need someone to play with?”, he asked. Boro Bear knew what Ronaldo meant. He wanted to play football with him! This was Boro Bear’s dream come true! He jumped into the air and shouted “Yes!” So, he and Ronaldo spent three whole hours playing football in the town square. Ronaldo even taught Boro Bear a few tricks! Boro Bear was so happy! After a while, Boro Bear said that he was tired and said he needed a drink. He opened his suitcase and took out a can of Coke. Just as Boro Bear was about to take a sip of cola, Ronaldo yanked the can out of his hands and said “No Coke! Drink water”. He gave Boro Bear a bottle of water instead. A few minutes later, Boro Bear and Ronaldo walked around the town square and talked together. Then Ronaldo said, “Boro Bear, come. I have something to show you”. Boro Bear didn’t know what Ronaldo wanted to show him.
“My friend, there is a match coming up. Would you like to play with us?” Boro Bear answered excitedly, “Yes, of course!” Boro Bear and Ronaldo walked to the stadium. In the changing room, he looked in his suitcase for his football kit he’d brought along with him. He put it on, and soon, they were on the pitch, playing football together. They passed the ball to each other, scored loads of goals and in the end, they won! Boro Bear was so happy that he decided to then ask Ronaldo something. “Ronaldo?”, asked Boro Bear. “Would you like to come with me back to England to the Stevenage Lamex Stadium?” Ronaldo thought about it for a moment before replying, “Sure!” It took two hours to fly back to England, but they were at the Stevenage Lamex Stadium in no time! Boro Bear ran onto the pitch to be the mascot for the match. And when Ronaldo scored, he ran to Boro Bear and they both jumped into the air in celebration and shouted “Siii” and they won the match. Again! This really was Boro Bear’s big day out!
“RONALDO?”, ASKED BORO BEAR. “WOULD YOU LIKE TO COME WITH ME BACK TO ENGLAND TO THE STEVENAGE LAMEX STADIUM?”

ROGER GOCHIN
I
THANK YOU ROGER!
n 2013, Roger Gochin joined the Stevenage FC Foundation Board of Trustees after previous involvement in numerous local charities and organisations. In 2014, he was made Chair of Trustees and has supported the Foundation in this position until today. Roger has taken the decision to step down as Chair of Trustees at the end of the month but will remain on the Board to continue his support for both the Foundation and Club. With a background deeply rooted in the local community, Roger took over as Principal of North Hertfordshire College in a restructuring of Further Education in Hertfordshire in 1991, having worked for the County Council Education Department before that. Roger led the college for 15 years and oversaw the progressing of the College as well as the redevelopment of both the Stevenage and Letchworth campuses and in 2003 welcomed The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh to open the new Stevenage campus adjacent to Asda in the town. In 2005, he retired as Principal but has continued to support the town with his involvement in numerous good causes including the Garden House Hospice, Herts Independent Living Service (HILS), Stevenage Leisure Limited, Sported and Stevenage Community Trust, to name but a few. Roger’s involvement with Stevenage FC started in 1986 when he attended his first match at Broadhall Way, before purchasing his first season ticket in 1991, which he has held ever since. As part of his role at North Herts College he worked with the Club to develop the EFCO (now EDP) programme that would go on to produce Club legend, George Boyd amongst others, and acted as an Education Adviser to the Football Conference Youth League. Former Head of Foundation and Club Life

Vice President, Bob Makin said “Roger has been a magnificent Chairman of the Foundation Board of Trustees. His astute, inspirational, committed and determined leadership has seen the Foundation through a period of signification operational and social changes. Many a Foundation employee have a great deal to thank Roger for”. Stevenage FC CEO and former Head of Foundation, Alex Tunbridge said “I was privileged enough to work for the Foundation when Roger joined as Chair of Trustees, his wealth of experience, diligence and integrity have enabled the charity to substantially develop its governance, paving the way for great levels of expansion and engagement in recent years. Roger’s contribution has already been enjoyed by thousands of local people, with a legacy of thousands more in the future”. Foundation CEO, Joe Goude added “Roger’s stewardship as Chair during the last 8 years has been incredible and has been vital to the whole team. His continued support and guidance has developed and empowered so many, giving us all the confidence to contribute to the growth and development of the Foundation. Our existing strategy is a tribute to his vision of what football can do for its whole community”.

Since then the South Wales side really have upped a gear, losing just twice in their last 11 games, both those defeats coming on the bounce against fellow promotion hopefuls Northampton and Forest Green. Boro will of course looking to avenge our last outing to Rodney Parade in October which ended in a thumping 5-0 loss for the visitors.
DID YOU KNOW? •N ewport earned their nickname of the Exiles because following their reformation in 1989 the were forced to play in England in the Hellenic League. • John Aldridge was a Newport player though he didn’t appear in one of their finest hours, European Cup Winners’ Cup quarter final against Carl Zeiss Jena of East Germany which was lost 3-2 on aggregate. • The 1982-83 season saw Newport record their highest post-war league finish of fourth place in the third tier.

After working with the Welsh Football Trust and Cardiff City, he was appointed manager of his hometown club Newport County in October with the side in 13th place in the league after 13 games.

SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION
LATEST NEWS
WELCOME It’s great to see our friends again from Newport. I’d like to afford a special welcome to the Exec of the Newport Supporters’ Club, comprising Bob and Susan Herrin (chair and secretary respectively) and to John Hill (vice chair). I won’t mention all fourteen committee members by name, but bid them all welcome nevertheless.
JOHN CARROLL For over twenty years, John has been a much valued committee member responsible for getting the Boro faithful to away games. From my perspective, his handling has been faultless, flawless and a component of the SA’s activities that has been trouble-free. I’m saddened that John has elected to “call it a day” from running the buses, but after twenty or so years I wish him well in his, er, retirement from the job. John, you’ve been amazing, and on behalf of all the fans who have benefited by your good services, I thank you.
MEMORY LANE Now then, this a scene which (I suspect) will only be remembered by a select few - of a certain age! It was taken on a Monday in November 1967 and published in the Evening Post
www.stevenagefc.com
newspaper. Believe it or not, Stevenage Town played a game on this pitch the following Saturday! It was against Guildford in the Southern Premier League. Over 1,200 turned up to watch the game in which Stevenage succumbed 1-2. I remember the match well. The ploughed field in the photograph had been rolled to perfection and the bold white lines stood out against the brown flattened soil. Not a blade of grass was to be seen and, remarkably, Guildford played in a white strip. It wasn’t white at 4:45pm that day!
PETER SHADBOLT We were saddened to learn of the passing of Peter Shadbolt last week. Peter played for Stevenage Borough from August 1984, debuting against Pirton. A no-nonsense defender, “Shadsy” went on to play on 77 occasions, concluding his time at Broadhall Way in October 1987. Peter’s footballing career saw him also play with Hertford, St Margaretsbury and Aylesbury United. Born in Hertford, Peter was just 68 years old. Our thoughts and prayers are with Peter’s family at this time. LLOYD BRISCOE Chair - Stevenage FC Supporters’ Association
