PHIL WALLACE

ood afternoon and welcome to the players, and officials of Newport County. I watched our narrow defeat at FGR on Saturday and, once again, we lost to an avoidable goal. Of course, if you don’t score you’re always likely to lose the game, but collectively after 6 league games we are still a work in progress and we have yet to find the most effective combination. Opinions on starting line ups are mostly formed by management in training throughout the week, but there’s a huge difference between scoring goals for fun on a training ground and scoring when it really matters - on matchday. That’s what I mean by a work in progress and it’s only after a dozen or so matches with a brand new squad (let’s not forget only 3 players from last season started on Saturday) that a management team starts to bed down a starting eleven and formation they can trust. But we are making progress and I’m optimistic for this season. It’s so strange playing games in empty stadiums at the moment and there seems no end in sight as to when fans will be allowed back in stadiums. We all thought that progress was being made, but we’re now back to square one. At least we’re playing games and able to watch the action live on iFollow, which is better than not paying at all. Hopefully normal service, albeit with limited numbers, will resume in a few months time. Last week Project Big Picture captured all the headlines and there was much in that document I really liked. It would have meant that, for the first time, clubs at our level would have a realistic chance of making a profit every year and be able to invest in facilities to improve the game and to make football more affordable. I think that’s one of

www.stevenagefc.com

the points that gets overlooked - making football more affordable. Businesses that are making money will always look to invest back into their income providers and reinvesting profits to reduce admission prices is just one of the options open to profitable clubs. I believe the PBP was a good first pass but it obviously needs work as if it doesn’t come with the blessing of all PL clubs, then it’s never going to work. There are concerns and items on which clarity is sought; PPV and the impact on a shared broadcasting income, for example. One thing I would never personally vote for is introducing B teams into the EFL. I think fans across the nation have shown they don’t want this and, although I really like the cup competition as it is so we can blood young players, I would never vote to have B teams in the EFL. Back to the game and this is the first of 2 home games in succession, so I hope you enjoy the matches and we can add a decent amount of points to our season; 6 would be nice!

AITCHISON & OTEH JOIN BEFORE TRANSFER DEADLINE Alex Revell added extra fire-power to the Stevenage squad leading up to the Transfer Deadline, as Jack Aitchison and Aramide Oteh both joined on-loan.

Aitchison arrived from Barnsley two weeks ago and has started in both games since signing. “I am delighted to get it over the line,” Aitchison said upon arrival. “It has been a chaotic 24 hours but I am just happy to be here now. I hope to come in, help the team, score some goals and help get us as high up the table as possible.” Aramide signed for the Club on Deadline Day and said, “It feels great. I am glad to be here and I’m ready to go. The club have been interested in me for a while and the

gaffer played a big part in my decision. We had an immediate connection and you always want to feel wanted, so I can’t wait to get playing to show what I can do.”

LIST WINS GCIS PLAYER OF THE MONTH Elliott List has been named the winner of the September Player of the Month Award, sponsored by GCIS (UK) Ltd. List fought off competition from Jamie Cumming, Luther James-Wildin and Elliot Osborne to be crowned the September winner, after recording one goal and two assists from September’s three Sky Bet League Two fixtures. “It is nice to win the Player of the Month award,” List said. “I would like to thank everyone that voted for me and hopefully there will be many more to come. It is a good start so hopefully myself and the team can keep going.” The Award is sponsored by Stevenage based GCIS (UK) Ltd Information Solutions.

ong before the cup glory ties against Newcastle and Spurs and Trophy finals at Wembley, Boro created their first knockout folklore with an appearance in the FA Vase quarterfinal no less. And the road to that battle in Southall

started almost exactly 35 years ago to the day with a narrow win at home to Flackwell Heath. Riding high in the Isthmian League Division Two North, Boro made heavy weather of progressing but they did so thanks to a brace from Doug Pirie and one from Phil Driver. DARREN ISTED

tevenage FC Women made their exit on penalties in the FA Cup in Sunday after a close fought clash with Royston Town FC Women. Stevenage went behind three times in the first half to trail 3-2 at the break, but they pulled it back to 3-3 after the interval and took the game to penalties, only to miss out 5-3 from the spot. Commenting on the campaign so far, boss Mark Dicker said: “The start of the season has been a pretty tough one in terms of results. “Looking at the table and it’s not good reading seeing us where we are, but apart from one week, we have been improving week by week which is pleasing. “We’ve got a relatively new and younger squad from last season so when we have players who are the ages of 16 and 17-years-old that start cementing their place in the starting 11 it’s great to see regardless of the result. We’ve also been hit hard already in the injury department

www.stevenagefc.com

which hasn’t been ideal to get some consistency in the team, but it’s opened even more chances for the Development Team to come and gain some minutes and experience. But a huge boost for the whole club is to get 1st team Captain Chloe Lupo-Gunn getting minutes since her ACL injury. She gives everyone a lift with her attitude and demands, so we’re hoping she can continue on the recovery path and play a huge part for us leading up to Xmas. “As always we’re extremely grateful for everyone’s continued support.” MARK DICKER - First Team Manager

then went on a run of three straight wins. They put two goals past both Barrow and Bolton Wanderers with 2-1 and 2-0 wins respectively while a penalty from Matty Dolan just two minutes from time was enough to complete their fightback against Mansfield in a 2-1 win. An uncharacteristic 5-0 home defeat to Norwich in the EFL Trophy was not ideal and they lost again with a 2-1 defeat at Cambridge, Scott Twine adding a second half consolation strike.

CLUB MATTERS Newport have enjoyed a good start to the current campaign, indeed at one point they actually sat at the summit of League Two. But their uneaten start to season was finally halted by fellow high-fliers Cambridge United just over a week ago before they got back to winning ways against Tranmere on Saturday. After a 1-1 draw against Scunthorpe United on the opening day, the Exiles

24

Stevenage FC v Newport County

Along with their impressive league form the Exiles have also enjoyed a good run in the EFL Cup where they put out Championship sides Swansea City and Watford, before taking Premier League Newcastle United all the way to a penalty shoot-out before making their exit.

THE BOSS MICHAEL FLYNN Manager Michael Flynn is Newport through and through and his relationship with the club goes back to his time there as a teenager in the Academy. After a rich pro career he came back in 2012, and he made a remarkable impact with an influential part in their return to the Football League with their win over Wrexham at Wembley. Although after retiring he did return as a player for Newport, it’s his work from the dugout which has won many plaudits. After being first team coach under Graha Westley he took over from the former Boro boss in 2017 an has enjoyed an amazing spell. Firstly he guided the Exiles to a remarkable escape from relegation

before setting them up a play-off contenders and cup legends as well with high-rifle battles against Spurs, Leicester and Manchester City.

WATCH OUT FOR Tristan Abrahams is a 21-yearold striker who clearly knows the way to goal. He has twice grabbed a brace this season, in the league win over Bolton and the EFL Cup success over Swansea. He also netted against Premier League Newcastle in the EFL Cup reverse. He began his career with Leyton Orient before moving on to Norwich and further loan spells. Michael Flynn looks to be getting the best out of this London-born front man who signed on a two-year deal with the Exiles in July 2019.

CONGRATULATIONS To the club chairman, Phil Wallace, on being awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s honours list last week. I remember the day when Phil joined the club. Many of us thought that we were destined to go under, like our predecessor clubs Stevenage Town and Stevenage Athletic before. Then (we were told) the chairman of Borehamwood had registered an interest in salvaging what could well have been a doomed club. At considerable personal expense, Phil Wallace paid off the previous owner and invested in a venture where few dare to tread. Thank goodness he did. The town of Stevenage has a Football League club and a stadium to be proud of – and it’s all down to one man. Well deserved Phil. Congratulations.

scores each club on three specific points: Dialogue, Governance and Transparency. Out of all the 92 clubs, I was pleasantly surprised to note that four League Two clubs feature on the top ten. The Index cites Exeter City and AFC Wimbledon as joint 1st, whilst sitting at no.92 is Swindon Town. I was pleased to note that Stevenage achieved a better score that five Premier League clubs and eight Championship clubs – but there’s always room for improvement! You can read the index by clicking on the image below. LLOYD BRISCOE SA Chairman

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY A few weeks off yet, but the Supporters’ Association will, once again, be sponsoring a wreath for Remembrance Sunday. There will be no public ceremony as such this year, due to Covid, but the British Legion will, on this occasion, lay the wreath on our behalf.

FAN ENGAGEMENT INDEX Prompted by a brief conversation I had some time ago with my counter-part from Crawley Supporters’ Club (my old friend Mark Ogbourne), I ventured to take note of the latest edition of the Fans Engagement Index. An independently-produced document, the index endeavours to monitor the relationship between all the clubs and their supporters in the top four tiers of English football. Effectively it
